IN or OUT: Amanda Seyfried in Bottega Veneta

Posted on January 09, 2013

Miss Amanda’s serving up face. Unfortunately, that’s about all she’s serving up here.

Ouch. That was a little harsh. But look:

Amanda Seyfried attends the 2013 National Board of Review Awards Gala in a Bottega Venet dress accessorized with Norman Silverman earrings and Alexandre Birman sandals.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Jac

We’re sorry – and we try not to be so dismissive – but that is not a very attractive dress. It’s virtually impossible for it not to look a little sloppy. Even the model looks sloppy on the runway. Plus, the colors are downright ugly and definitely not within Amanda’s wheelhouse. She looks sallow. And the shoes totally clash. But like we said, her face looks great, so there’s that.

To be honest, we weren’t planning on putting this one up to a vote, but our reaction to the look is so overwhelmingly negative that we’re wondering if it’s even possible for someone to mount a decent defense of it.

So there you go, kittens. That’s your assignment. Defend it.

Vote Now!

IN! And now I will tell you why.

OUT! No arguments here, T Lo.

The minions with opinions were not in love with Abigail Spencer’s virginal sister-wife dress, voting it OUT.

Out.  To quote, “no arguments here, T Lo.”

    • judybrowni

A dress that makes the pretty little Amanda look as though she has enormous floppy boobs? I think not.

  • Out. An ill fitting, drab mess of a dress.

    • StellaZafella

Kiltd, you’re better at analysis of fabric/construction than me: How is it that such an expensive garment can look so ill conceived and badly made? I’m not willing to blame Ms S’s fashion presentation skills for the look of this…just her gays for letting it out the door.

      • First of all, thanks for the compliments both real and implied. I’m flattered.
As to the dress itself, the problem apart from color seems to be that the snakeskin strips don’t have enough fluidity on their own to be a good balance to the chiffon of the main part of the dress. I get the idea well enough, that of constraining the freedom of the lighter fabric with a more structural element. In this case it just doesn’t really work. As we have all seen on PR, when an idea isn’t realized to its full potential it can look like an unhappy accident.
This is one of those times.

        • Maggie Muellner

I think Amanda doesn’t have a long enough torso for all those linear elements. As a result, she looks thick through the middle which I am sure she is not. The belt looks like it’s cinching in a sausage.

The skirt looked pretty good in movement down the runway on the model, but Amanda doesn’t look happy or confident standing there with her shoulders hunched a wee bit and standing still with her arms straight at her sides

  • Judy_S

OUT. It’s the dress. It is not a good dress.

  • ChiliP

Well, the studded strips on the dress remind me of the edible candy wallpaper in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so there’s that.

    But it’s still an out.

    • I wonder if the studs are just as edible?  Out for me as well.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  Looks like the Project Runway Hardware Store Challenge.

  • Out. The length is totally wrong and it’s just weirdly gladiator meets prom queen. Great hair though.

    • Yeah, I was thinking gladiator too.

    • kimmeister

Yes, she is serving up some perfectly lustrous hair.  The shoes are cute but not with that dress.  Out.

  • I like it. Not on her though. She is too short waisted and that is a dress that needs to be walked around in, not for standing in. So I guess Im saying Out.

    • suzq

I concur.  It doesn’t look bad on the model because the belt hits her at a more aesthetically pleasing place.  And the skirt is too long for poor Amanda.  So IN on the model and OUT on Amanda.

  • Sobaika

Out, but I don’t hate it as much as you seem to.

I like the dress itself but it’s the wrong color (WHAT is with fair-skinned blondes wearing beige??) and the wrong length. If it hit her around the knee and were in an oxblood or even a minty green, this would be a fun party dress. Also whoever put the pinky-red eyeshadow on her needs to be taken out back and shot.

  • I don’t like it when she uses a dark lipstick, and the dress is bad, so it’s an OUT for me.

  • unbornfawn

She’s WERQing it from the neck up. Props to whoever did her hair and make-up. When I saw the close-up I couldn’t figure out why this would be an IN or OUt and then I scrolled. Once I saw the stud strips, I cringed. You guys are right about this being a terrible color. It is an ugly dress and in spite of Amanda working the shit out of it, this is an OUT.

  • uprightcitizen

It’s ugly from a distance, but when you zoom in on it and see that the strips with the studs on them are actually snakeskin, it just gets uglier. And if the color weren’t unfortunate enough, it’s giving this tiny girl uniboob, and she’s way too short for it. Eva Mendes could maybe pull this off … with a leather jacket and a whole lot of attitude … but it’s really not worth the effort. Out.

  • GorgeousThings

No way I’m defending this. She looks like a tween borrowing her bohemian mom’s dress for the class dance.

  • Out. Bad color and looks messy. I bet it looked OK in person though…I have a feeling the photos are making it look worse that it really is.

  • With different colors I think it could have worked. A black or dark gray with copper or brown buttons on the dress would have solved the worst of the problems. The skirt looks like it moves nicely on the model, alas, the bodice is sack. A saggy boob sack. There’s just no way to fix it without beating the designer.

I give an IN to Amanda for looking fierce while testing Audrey Hepburn’s theory that a beautiful woman can be beautiful even in a paper bag. I give an OUT to the designer and smack across the head for letting this out of the work room.

    • ralish

Agree with all of this. I think the dress requires a flat-chested woman (and lots of edits, of course).

  • AuntJentie

  • FrayedMachine

Ugh. Who has been dressing her lately? I feel like she’s been one disappointment after another. I’d love the dress if it was in a different material, different length and different color. … So basically a different dress all together. Love the back, though. Really don’t care for the hair and that lipstick shade does nothing for her. … I can’t even say anything about the shoes.

  • Scarlet39

I like it on the model, but not on AS.  It makes her look droopy and the color is wrong (which I think they realized and tried to correct with that lipstick)

  • The dress is ugly, the length of it and the shoe pairing, makes it all the more so.  Her eyes should have been played up and the lips toned down. I am not a fan of that lip shade.

  • mozzer0906

OUT.  Plus the pleats in the bodice makes me wonder if she is flashing boob under there.  A sure sign it is too matchy matchy to your skin tone.

  • OUT

  • captrenault

Are those supposed to be snakeskin accents?

  • she looks sexy. IN

  • elleg929

Out. The dress is downright fugly

  • MissMariRose

OUT. The mid-calf length is so unattractive.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  It didn’t need a vote.

  • OUT – though I actually like the dress on the model, so perhaps Amanda’s problem has more to do with the styling, and/or the fact that it seems to make her look washed-out.

  • lexilexi

OUT.  But am surprised that the in close up of her face, she resembles Sharon Stone to me.   Maybe it’s the eyes.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

OUT.  That lip color deserved a better dress.

  • Annabelle Archer

OUT. That’s an ugly dress, full stop.

  • KSpence

    No. Out.

  • AlexisPayne

How does it manage to look so heavy? Hate the hem length, don’t care for the colors, don’t care for the shoes. Big ol’ OUT for me.

  • Those colors are so not right for her and the fit of the dress is making her look big, which she most definitely is not. I am guessing that you have to be pretty flat-chested for this to have a chance at flattering your figure. So, as must as I like Amanda, OUT.

  • OUT.  this dress was made of leftover scraps from the spartacus costume dept.  also the shoes were slapped together using gladiator sandals which fell apart during the battle.  i know the mulberry mouth is in but this looks like a sticker applied to  her lips.  just awful

  • trisker

OUT.  I don’t mind the dress, but it’s a TERRIBLE color for her.

  • ringthing

Baggy middle aged gladiator dress. OUT.

  • jw_ny

    Easy OUT

horrible dress…is it burlap?  😉  The cutouts at the waist send it way over the top into the out category.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN. Why does everyone hate this? I think the dress is not great, but not terrible. Her hair and makeup and face-serving alone make this an in.

  • msdamselfly

I think it looks great on the model– needs a fierce woman to pull it off

  • OUT, but it might work with a thicker, corset-like belt and a raised hem.

  • Jangle57

I saw a shot of her with Jessica Chastain on another site wearing this dress and my initial shot there was ‘yuck’.  This hasn’t changed that initial thought.  OUT  It looks like the dress Anthony Ryan designed for last week’s PR, at least the top does.

  • I hope I don’t offend anyone by saying this but the color just reminds me of vomit.  I actually recoiled when I did the scroll down the first time I saw this picture!

  • OUT but it would be an in on Fiona in Burn Notice.

  • Out.  She looks bad.  (Although I think it looks hot on the model.)

  • Lately I’ve consistently wondered why shorter starlettes don’t have someone telling them that the mid calf/almost to the ankles hem length doesn’t work. That being said, it would take too many changes to make this even a tiny in so it’s an OUT. For sure.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That is so, so not her dress. OUT.

  • TSkot

I like it better when it’s moving (a la the runway), but she still looks dynamite:  IN

  • VeryClaire

I don’t really disagree with your particular points, but I still think she looks good. I’d have to say IN but a different color would help her.

  • snarkykitten

that dress makes it look like her tits are down to her stomach

  • Judy_J

I rather like the runway version, but on Ms Seyfried, it just looks horribly wrong.

  • I’m not a hater! Although not terribly flattering, Amanda’s dress is pretty inoffensive. Her shoes are too “safe” a choice, though; she could’ve done something more exciting there.

  • Little_Olive

Its’ what Xena would wear if she was clinically depressed.

A tad better on the model bc it was shorter. But no.

  • Introspective

so she’s 5 inches too short for this dress at its present length. shes also not really the right skin tone for this outfit either. her paleness does not go well with the dress because although the fabric is darker than “nude” it is still light enough to do nothing for her, grommets and fixtures and all. its way OUT for me.

  • Monabel

No one could look good in that.

  • crash1212

OUT. I think this is the very definition of an OUT. This is a very unattractive dress. From the fabric, to the…strips???….to the length – it’s just awful – add to all of that the color and you have one hot mess. Can’t imagine why anybody would choose this schmatta. I hate the shoes, too. Pretty hair and makeup though.

  • Stubenville

    The length – gak!

  • Aly Light

I apparently stand alone on this, but I think the dress is FIERCE– or would totally be fierce if it were nipped in a tiny bit more at the waist. I think the gold tone works well for her, and the neckline is good for her figure. I like the unconventional lip color she went with. I like the slightly unconventional length, and the way the shoes play off the color of the button details. I stand alone, but from where I stand, Amanda is IN.

    • mhleta

Thank God! I was feeling like the red-headed step child again. I love this dress, too. Come over to my shanty and I’ll bust out the moonshine.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I actually wouldn’t mind the dress here if it were only in a different color. Her hair and makeup look good but the color of the dress ruins the whole effect. OUT.

  • Sorry, I can’t defend this. I’ve said it before, and I repeat myself now – Amanda is a tiny woman and most of these couture dresses swallow her up. Plus I agree on the color issues. OUT.

  • LuluBI

In defense: if it was 5 inches shorter and in a midnight blue, it could be an In.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OUT.  That is one butt ugly dress.  She sure is pretty, though.  Love the lip color.

  • LLuL

What dress? All I see is lipstick.

  • schadenfreudelicious

an extremely pretty girl wearing a completely unflattering dress, if the 6ft model can’t pull it off, tiny Amanda doesn’t stand a chance…

  • I can see it looking good in a maxi length on Iman. The model looks good in it. Her hair implys its supposed to look beachy but expensive. But it is definitely not a look for Amanda, and not a look for any other red carpet event but maybe the Cannes.

  • Scrolldown fug! Great hairrrrr.

  • Hell Yes, I Would!

I’m so confused by what’s happening here. OUT.

  • guest2visits

I kind of love this dress and the shoes, and she looks wonderful except it’s a touch too long for her.
I bet it’s one of those wispy, pale little frocks with lots of pretty detail that look a thousand times better in person.

  • butterflysunita

She looks beautiful, but that dress is pumpkin like.  And the lipstick is awful.

  • Out. It looks a little better on the model, a little cleaner and brighter, maybe due to the runway lighting. I just can’t get over how tatty the hem looks, especially on AS.

  • Hideous, but boy, does she have great hair!

  • jilly_d

That is a phenomenal lip color for her.  Unfortunately, everything below it sucks, so OUT.

  • On initial look, I thought it wasn’t so bad. Then I spent a few seconds really looking at it and no. It’s too long, the colour is bad and it’s giving her droopy boobs. The fact that the strips on the bodice don’t line up with the strips on the skirt is making me twitch and those shoes are just tragic.

So that’s an OUT from me.

  • OUT!!!

  • marilyn

    Out.  Beautiful girl, ugly dress

  • mhleta

IN! I love this dress ON HER. Very few people could make this work, but she is dazzling enough to elevate this to legit goddess-wear. I bet it looks incredible in motion, too. Having said that, I’m not usually a fan of shades too close to the skin tone, so I get what you’re griping about BUT a) she has gorgeous, luminous skin and her makeup is strong enough to keep her from disappearing b) The dress has a lot going on in the way of texture and interesting design, so that also offsets what would otherwise be a drab color choice. I don’t see how the shoes clash? They look like a metallic that’s fairly neutral, but complimenting the other metallic elements in the dress. Someone explain what I’m missing there? Thanks. (BTW, attention Zoey Deschanel: See the tights on the model? Do that with a pretty dress instead. Burn the opaque black ones unless you’re wearing a wool skirt or something wintry. )

  • Out.  She’s wearing an oddly colored dalek.

  • Does anyone else see a Dalek prom dress? Which might actually be an interesting concept, but not done like this… out.

  • Out. And berry lipstick? Really? With that orangy-nude? I wonder if this dress was a last minute replacement for the dress she meant to wear until her cat peed on it?

  • MitchellGilburne

    Xena couture

  • BeaDee

Why does she keep trying to do edgy dresses with princess hair? They just don’t work together. Let alone the color on her. Blech.

  • Kristy Evans

Out. I don’t HATE it, but I don’t really like it either. There’s no “there” there.

  • OUT. The lipstick is too dark for her, and the color really does her no favors.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. The color, the length, and the insipid way the skirt hangs.

  • OUT.  I can’t find a single redeeming quality.  Who keeps trying to put golden-haired sylphs into paper-bag colored schmattes, anyway?

  • decormaven

Not working, not in the least. OUT.

  • pugluv

That is a dress that looks better with movement…it is a mess with her just standing there..but even with movement it remains a meh dress

  • Out, as usual for Amanda

  • formerlyAnon

Also, “minions with opinions” is inspiring a strong urge to re-watch Danny Kaye in “The Court Jester.” (“The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle, the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.”)

I really need to find more favorite movies that weren’t made before I was born.

    (edited for wording, twice, confusedly)

  • I think that the model is showing the only way it can be pulled off: as some sort of bronzed goddess/ softer take on an amazon warrior thing. Her coloring and build don’t work with this. If Kerry Washington wore this, preferably swapping it out for that fluorescent flamenco frankendress, you’d find yourself liking it, I bet. You could even go lighter in skin tone, but it has to be someone who looks like they have gone into the sun.

  • Overall OUT. When I saw the pic from just below the shoulders up, I thought it looked great (and I’m fine with the colour and the bands of fabric, too). But that very odd blouson affect around the bust and the apron-tie waistband and overall length were a disappointment. But, oh, what a beautiful face that little girl has!

  • Sara__B

    Out. Enough said.

  • alyce1213

OUT, no argument.  (But I think she’s also serving up some great hair, which is not just “mermaid” but apparently flows down her back as well.)

  • nannypoo

I would never have imagined that leather with studs could look frumpy, but here it is.

  • Mary229

I just don’t understand that dark wine lipstick with the peachy/beige dress.  I’m completely confused by it.  I’m sitting here staring thinking…huh????

  • Out. Ugly color, bad length.

  • OUT, OUT, OUT.

  • She looks like a Dalek’s Oscar statuette.  Hair and make-up are fab, though.

  • Worst dalek dress, ever.

  • SorayaS

Out. It doesn’t fit and the colour is terrible on her. You know, I think she would be able to make more fashion choices if she went brunette- she looks washed out more often than not!

  • Trisha26

Out. Although I do like the dress, very art-deco-y, but in addition to color it’s too long for Amanda and that’s throwing everything off. Why are petite actresses/pop stars (curvy or not) given dresses/gowns tailored for 6 ft tall stick thin models? Love the model’s shoes (what we can see of them) and that she’s wearing hose!

  • Imasewsure

Not awful but out for me

  • aristida_girl

ha ha ha ha! I just looked up dalek, a frequently used word in the commentary on this dress, and a perfect descriptor… I like the dress on the model, but AS is not the right build for it, thus the illusion of a short waist is created with the addition of unfortunate slits near the waist instead of the goddess effect I assume the designer was going for, also, the length is compromised. Overall, I like the dress on the model, but not on AS, so, in for model, out for Amanda (also, poor shoe choice, she should have gone for either more sophisticated like a clean pump or more fierce, maybe a nice bootie?

    • MilaXX

Now all I see is a cosplay outfit.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Out. I hate when they give tiny actresses the clothes made for the gigantic models that are far too long for them.

  • RocknRollmom

Out.  Horrible color on her.  Well, actually the whole dress is horrible on her.  I like it on the model though.  Amanda should never ever wear that color again.  On the other hand, I think that is the prettiest I have ever seen her look.

  • Toto Maya

I would like to see the dress in green or some jewel tone, I think it would look pretty cool like that. But yeah. Why beige? I always ask that, why beige when you can wear any other color?

  • barbarienne

I want to like this dress. I always want to like dresses with studded leather strappy things. There’s a reason for my ‘nym, after all.

But the wrinkles, the fact that it’s too long and the wrong color for her…yeah, I can’t endorse this. OUT.

  • PrunellaV

It looks as if it were pulled straight off the model and put on her with no alterations. Once again, she’s too short for this dress as it is. OUT.

  • l_c_ann

for a slightly different reason.  Her bum is going to look so wierd after she’s sat on those circles and squares for while.

  • oh, no.  NO NO NO.  NO NO NO NO NO.

  • MilaXX

OUT. The face is great. In fact I wish her make up person would talk to Sarah Hyland’s since Amanda’s person seems able to switch up and know when to play up the lip & when to showcase those large eyes. The dress & shoes are a fail. The shoes by big too big on her and looking to heavy for the dress. The dress, in addition to looking a little sloppy,is too long for her. It’s not a great dress, but someone taller might be able to make it work. Perhaps one of the brown skinned gals like Zoe or Eva. There is also a bit of a disconnect between the makeup and the dress. They clash.

  • Nonnah

Out.  Strangely enough, this is a dress I could see Julianne Moore choosing.  It would probably still be out, but I think it would look better on her.

  • demidaemon

OUT. In addition to the points that TLo has made here, the length is doing her no favors. She needed to hem this, if possible. Or just not wear it. She really isn’t a girl who can wear things right off the rack/runway. Her height and frame demands more tailoring.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  In different colors (and I’m even thinking different types of fabrics) this might be an interesting dress.  But no.

  • no argument from me!

  • Ugh, no. That is not her dress. Or her lipstick.

  • Call me Bee

Hmmmmmm I like it.  It’s an odd color, but the studded trim and open back make it an interesting look.  And it’s the perfect length.  Any longer and it woud be dowdy.  Shorter, and it would be…IDK…silly.  (OK–running for cover now…)  IN!

  • MzzPants

OUT.  That color isn’t even from her planet.

  • ZnSD

    gorgeous girl, shitty dress. OUT

  • Elleachaudaucul

Out, but I like the idea of the dress. I’m sure it’s someone’s dress, just not hers. Also I think it needs a smoky eye, despite the runway styling.

    • Candigirl1968

Maybe JLo or Beyonce?  I feel like you need to be a little more fierce to pull it off.

  • RzYoung

Out, but her hair and face are amazing, maybe she should have just cut a little hole in the backdrop and stuck her head through it instead

  • Anniebet

Hair and face almost an IN, but lip color is too..purple?

But dang, that dress wants to sabotage you doesn’t it, dear? Lousy length, hangs weirdly, and oddest color. And above that studded waist – which creates girth, girl…girth (not a word one wants to pop into your public’s collective minds) those rows of studs marching outward from the neckline create even more girth.

I shall not deign to mention the footwear. No, I won’t.

Dunno, she’s kinda all “Spartacus meets Sunset Boulevard and gets mauled by the lion”.

  • OrigamiRose

    Oh.  My.  OUT.

  • Melvis Velour

I think it’s time to take the stylist who convinced her to go with this train wreck out to the coliseum and pull a Spartacus on them…with the BKs pulling a Vestal Virgins…anyone with me?

    Great face. Horrid dress.

  • Kriky

Eugh. Out. Her entire head looks great as always, at least. I’d kill for hair like hers.

  • RedRaven617

In. I think her hair and make up look spectacular. Her dress needs to be shortened a good six inches and she will look much better proportion. I like the dress with its interest use of nail head.

  • Louise Bryan

The skirt is too long, and the color belongs on a coat, not a dress.  OUT.

  • OUT!! Too long, wrong colour, ill fitting, terrible fabric, trim looks like something I would’ve done in Home Ec class – but her hair is pretty, and make up is pretty good, although the lip colour could be a skosh lighter – too fuschia/magenta for her complexion.

  • Do not get this dress. No one could look good in it. OUT.

  • Out. It washes her out, and makes the dark lip color look extremely out of place. Plus, it’s just an ugly dress.

  • But the lips are divoon!

  • Tashina Savage

I don’t think it’s that bad. It doesn’t hurt that she is so beautiful she could make a trash bag look good. I love the lip color.I’m going to go against the group and vote IN.

  • littlemac8

OUT, I agree her hair and makeup are flawless but the dress both in form and in color is a NO.  I liked the comment earlier this week vis à vis the Fannings that those girls should take a page from Amanda’s playbook with regard to hair color.
