Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet – Part 1

Posted on January 14, 2013

We’re cracking our knuckles and pushing up our sleeves, darlings, because we’ve got a metric shit-tonne of dresses to rip. Hit it, ladystars!

Adele in Burberry

It’s pretty, but kind of a stereotypical “big girl” dress. We realize she just had a baby and we wouldn’t suggest she wear something tight and short, but this is her standard go-to for the red carpet and we’d like to see her in something a little less “done.”

Amy Adams in Marchesa

Yawn. There really isn’t a thing about this dress that interests us.

Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney

Love this. It’s sassy and sharp. Perfect for her. She and Tina killed last night. We never laughed so much during an awards show.

Carla Gugino in Rami Al Ali

Emily Blunt in Michael Kors

We didn’t love this on her. It didn’t seem like that gold quite went with her coloring.

Helen Hunt in Dolce&Gabbana

Pretty, but colorless.

Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka

Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica.

Jennifer Garner in Vivienne Westwood

Standard. There was, as always, a lot of red on that red carpet, but we liked this shade a lot.

Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta

Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein

The color is beautiful on her but the bust is outrageously unflattering. And that’s total Star Trek: The Next Generation hair.

Julianna Margulies in Emilio Pucci

Striking color, but we didn’t love the material. Also, her ponytail was ridiculously huge.

Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen

Hate it. Hate the color and hate that it basically looks like a dress form with a fishtail skirt.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

Really disappointing. Don’t like the color, don’t like the matchy shoes, don’t like the limp hair, and REALLY don’t like sheer long skirts over minis.

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

Once again, we give her credit for trying, but there’s way too much going on with this dress. The Wonder Woman bodice is kind of interesting, but not particularly flattering to her. She looks all bunched up; like she’s afraid to move.

Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior

Beautiful color, but we hate the hem and HATE the matchy-but-not-quite shoes.

Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vauthier Couture

Rachel Weisz in Louis Vuitton

Ugh. No.

Salma Hayek in Gucci Première

She looks a little bit like a Hallmark Christmas ornament. Pretty, but stiff.

Sofia Vergara in Michael Cinco

It’s all right. We suppose we should give her props for not wearing a mermaid skirt, but it’s not like she took any risks here.

Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta

We love ourselves some Oscar, but this dress looks a mess. The pearls are sweet, but they don’t really feel like they go.

      Amy and Tina are perfection

      • captrenault

They should have been brought out more than once an hour.

        • Ass Kicking Adviser

Seriously. It was making me crazy. That show is so boring otherwise.

        • f_yeah_marie

I agree.   For once, I wanted the hosts to be prominent!

        • Katrin

Yes, especially with so many other try so (too) hard to be funny.

        • RebeccaKW

Agreed.  It almost wasn’t even hosting, they were so scarce.

      • Don Hackett

fucking hilarious, those two.  especially towards the end with all the shots of them “hob-nobbing” withe other guests at the tables.  glenn close and j-lo, of all people, added to the hilarity.  ove that the golden globes are so loose and hip with the humor.

    • call_me_schmeg

      lady mary KILLED it.

      • Mismarker

Much like she killed Pamuk with her lady parts! But seriously, she looks amazing.  Out of the three Grantham sisters, I think Michelle Dockery looks the best in modern dress.

        • Bridget Smith

I actually think she looks the worst (well, “worst” is a relative term, as she rarely looks actually bad) of the three in modern dress and the best in period dress. I think Laura Carmichael is the most improved in modern dress (guys, she’s SO PRETTY and they make her so frumpy on the show), and Jessica Brown Findlay looks the best in modern dress – when she succeeds, which is not a given. Michelle Dockery’s got an old-fashioned look that doesn’t shine as well in modern dress, to me.

But she’s absolutely gorgeous, and she’s such a good actress, and she looks so amazing here, and basically I just love her. How adorable was she while laughing at Aziz Ansari’s pot gag?

      • GorgeousThings

Funny, I thought it was a retread of Alexander McQueen. Pretty enough, but not spectacular.

        • call_me_schmeg

i totally get the mcqueen vibe, especially with the pronounced shoulders.

        • tereliz

I thought it was a McQueen at first, too. But not one I recognized from a recent collection, so I was confused. I knew TLo would be here to help me out, though! Thanks, y’all!

      • twocee

Oh yeah, Lady Mary for the win out of this bunch.

      • Maggie ♡

Definitely. I would have given Michelle her own page and a WERQ!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

That’s a personal best for Amy Poehler.  And maybe for Stella McCartney.

      • Alloy Jane

I know, I’m waiting for TLo to correct the name of the designer.

    • WendyD

Lena Dunham needed to be wearing more comfortable shoes. She was very obviously struggling to walk in them during the show. What’s the point of suffering for shoes if we can’t even see them?

I saw Helen Mirren from the side during a TV interview and that dress was FUGLY. It looks much different from a straight-on front view.

If Rachel Weisz continues to dress like that, I’m afraid we’re going to have to take Daniel Craig back.

      • Judy_S

Now I’m sad about the Mirren because she looks so wonderful in the photo above.
Looking at other remarks, maybe Dunham actually did have some kind of injury. With that dress, she could have kicked the shoes off. I think she looks great, though I understand that she really has no persona to go with a dress like that.

      • Katrin

re: shoes! Yes! Put on some flats if you can’t walk in heels. It’s not a crime, nobody will know it anyway, and it will make you look less ridiculous. She seemed to struggle enough with the dress. It’s a shame that girls like her are almost forced into the princess look when that’s obviously not their thing at all. I get that there’s a dress code or etiquette, but I’m sure one of the fancy designers could come up with something more fitting for her.

        • DeborahJozayt

She’d rock the Amy Poehler look with total ease.

        • patticake1601

She was on Letterman the other day and had the same trouble walking in heels. She does not know how to walk in heels and should stick to smaller heels until she masters them.

      • Jessi03

She’s an Obie.  She probably hasn’t worn heels in ages.  Walking around campus, I would be surprised if she routinely wore shoes at all.

      • Bridget Smith

You can tell she didn’t think she’d win because she didn’t wear shoes that she could walk to the stage in.

        • Jessica | Surely Sonsy

neither did the producers, given how far back they sat her…

      • Gayer Than Thou

Lena Dunham is not a gown girl, and the sooner she stops trying to be, the happier — and more chic — she’ll be.

      • julnyes

Yes I hated the Mirren dress when I initially saw it, but it is much better from the front.

      • Lisa_Cop

It was pathetic to see Lena literally hobbling getting up stairs and on the stage.

      • Joanne Abrams

I agree about Lena, she needed to wear shoes she could walk in, awkward!  Rachel Weisz, what was she thinking?  can we take Daniel Craig back now?

    • Paula Pertile

Lena Dunham – “She looks all bunched up; like she’s afraid to move.”
She did walk really stiff and weird, I wondered if she’d hurt her foot or something. Maybe it was just the dress.

      • Sobaika

It was her shoes, she took them off as soon as the show ended.

        • MilaXX

she needed to. That last trip to the stage was darn near a crip walk.

          • Introspective

ive never seen such a belabored walk since i was walking thru the maternity ward while in labor. she should have gone with some easy spirits or something.

      • luluransom

She said in her E interview that she had instructions from her stylist to ‘keep tugging the dress down and to the left, to align the center seam w/her cleavage’. Apparently her chest pulls to the right?? Anyhow, that doesn’t sound like a comfortable way to spend an evening on camera.

        • foodycatAlicia

Her stylist should be sacked for making her wear a dress that you need to keep tugging on!

        • twocee

Odd, and I was thinking she’s reached the point where she needs to HIRE a stylist.  Sad that a professional directed her to wear that hot mess of a dress.

      • Laylalola

She said something about the top being a corset –

      • heartbot

She tweeted about how much she hated her undergarments. Maybe that explains it? Although I don’t understand why, with a dress like that, you need something so involved it might kill you.

        • kaycem

          thank you!

i was just about to comment:  am i the only one seeing lena’s big ass corset? is that maybe why she walked funny?  you can see the boning and whatnot b/c the fabric of the dress is so thin.  not that there’s ANYTHING wrong with support garments, not at all, but when you’re not someone who wears them often but decide to don them for a special event…  god, it should be an olympic event.

          • heartbot

Dude, I feel like I deserve a medal just when I have to wear spanks. A full out corset with boning? I would be in a fetal position sobbing after a couple of hours. (Which is why lady stars get paid the big bucks, and I do not.)

            • cheekypinky

…Actually, if you get a proper, custom corset? It is HELLA more comfortable, less sweaty, and sausage making than Spanx.

I have two custom corsets, and they are the most comfortable and sexy undergarments I own.

      • Vera

I do love her hair, though.

    • theblondette

Helen Mirren blows them all out of the water! But Michelle Dockery looks great. A hard dress to pull off, that one, but she does it with aplomb. Agree about Emily Blunt’s dress – that shape is flattering on her but something about the colour looks her skin look vaguely dirty? A brighter gold might have worked better.

    • f_yeah_marie

Also, this is my first time noticing Jessica Alba’s clutch…yikes.

      • Jennifer McClory

Me too!  I yelled, “Why is she carrying the skin of a dead Fraggle?!?!”  Ugh.

        • the_archandroid

I was positive I would be waking up to  pictures of Elmo on the back of milk cartons.

        • cheekypinky

          That’s what I said!

    • Jaeda Laurez

Helen Mirren is a Bawse. I can only hope to achieve such greatness. It takes a lot to make Jessica Chastain’s boobs look sad, but that dress managed it. Juliana’s dress didn’t photograph well there, but on TV, it was really nice- the back is really sexy and pretty. I dug it. Jessica Alba’s dress matches her spray tan- no bueno.

I loved Amy Poehler. Her Divorce Cleavage was on full display throughout the night and I thought she looked great.

      • m0r0

How could Miss Chastain put that dress on and say, “Yeah, I look fabulous.” She managed to make herself look DUMPY. Ugh. What woman wants that?

        • heartbot

“This dress makes my breasts look like they belong to a 100-year-old mother of 20. I think I’ll go with this one!” WHAT?!

          • Introspective

really! i was so sad at the whole of jessica’s midsection. between the extra fabric at the boob and at the waist and hip she looked like a top waiting to be spun.

and her hair was a big old no.

            • kimmeister

The hair, how it pained!  I couldn’t tell if she was in dire need of touching up her roots or if the lighting just hit it in a way that made the part look lighter in color.

        • Ass Kicking Adviser

She needs new gays before Oscar night – STAT!

        • Vera

Someone needs to be fired for dressing her like that. Jessica is so lovely, how can it be so difficult?

      • teensmom99

divorce cleavage and an opportunity to mug with Clooney. You go girl!  You deserve it.

    • Heidi

Absolutely LOVED Michelle Dockery’s dress. One of, if not the, best-dressed ladies last night.

    •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I actually liked Jessica’s hair. With a very minimalistic dress (but in that same gorgeous color) she would have look striking.

      • teensmom99

Her hair bugged me.  It looked like you could see her roots . . .

        • Introspective

her roots were a huge problem –thin hairline, plus severe hairdo, plus over done color = a right mess under hdtv and harsh spot light.

    • greyhoundgirl

Lena Dunham could barely hobble in her shoes last night.  I very much wanted to see what they looked like!

    • mhleta

You put my two biggest objections, The Jessicas Alba and Chastain, right next to each other. Both of my strenuous objections to their dresses had to do with the bust. Alba desperately needed some cutlets in there to keep her boobs from looking like bent muffins, and Chastain needed some PSI in that dress, because the fabric at the bust looked positively deflated.

      • kimmeister

Yes, Alba’s bust looks ok here but onstage it looked a deflated, wrinkly mess.

    • Sobaika

I really (quelle suprise!) liked Zooey’s look. It looks a bit wrinkly, but it fits her retro style with a little extra oomph for an award show. I also (more suprise!) liked Sofia Vergara’s look. It’s standard and it’s black which doesn’t tend to photograph well, but I don’t think the fashion industry + her fabulous shape affords her many risk-taking options.

      • heartbot

I just wish there had been a little less of Zooey’s dress and a more defined waist line. Honestly, it was the lack of waist that made it look less retro to me and more just sloppy.

    • Dana WhatTheFrock

I thought that Jennifer Garner’s dress was just regular-pretty when I saw the red carpet photo. But when she walked on stage, it was so SPARKLY that I liked it a lot more. It’s a shame it doesn’t show through in the photos.

Bow down to Helen Mirren. She’s a babe.

      • Billie_Dawn

Agreed. I actually said “Wow!” when Jennifer Garner walked on stage, which was the first time I’d seen her that night. But if I’d seen the above photo first, I’d definitely have thought “Pretty. Standard. Pretty standard.” The sparkle makes the dress.

    • Jenna621

I’m so tired of Zooey wearing dressing that start halfway down her boobs.  I think they look terribly unflattering on her.  And I think that’s the best I’ve seen Jennifer Garner in some time.

      • Sobaika

Really though. Jennifer Garner has been really open about not being into fashion and has had many misses on the red carpet. I think it’s the best she’s looked in a really long time.

      • MoHub

I always fear there will be a wardrobe malfunction moment with Zooey. Why can’t she get a bodice that sits high enough?

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Jessica Chastain – I did a booble-take – looked like she had 4 (2 pert, 2 droopy).

      • Mismarker

^This.  That dress was giving her the boobs of a 90 year old.  Even my husband (who knows and cares little about fashion) was like, “WTF is she wearing??”

    • Lori Wade Miller

Love Amy’s outfit. And could poor Lena Dunham have looked any more uncomfortable?

    • suzie

I’m so glad you mentioned Jessica Chastain’s hair.  It was so weird.

    • Tadiana

I just want to give Lena a hug and help her find a better stylist.  If she even has one.

I loved Michelle Dockery’s and Emily Blunt’s dresses.

    • MK03

On the plus side, that’s the first time I’ve seen Zooey Deschanel and not wanted to smack the twee off of her.

    • Annabelle Archer

Amy and Tina knocked it out of the park in both fashion and funny.

      Amy – sewing room dummy.
Emily – well that’s not really HER coloring, is it? Maybe that why the dress wasn’t working?
Jessica Alba – Prom Hell with gawd awful lipstick too. And a Muppet purse, for shame!
Jessica Chastain – Top 5 worst of the night. An insult to breasts across the nation.
      Michelle Dockery – LOVE
Rachel W – someone else noted that it looked like a Stella McCartney. That’s not a compliment.
Zooey – found a snappy prom dress at the Goodwill and some pearls at Walmart. So thrifty.

    • Veronica Russek

I soooooo want Jennifer Garner’s jewelry!!!! Those earrings look like vintage perfection! The bracelets were fab too… Dress was good on her.

What is that furry thing Jessica Alba is carrying?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Diamond necklace was to die for, dress was meh. But then, I really hate mermaid silhouettes.

      • l_c_ann

Maybe Jessica Alba really likes the Tribbles episodes of Star Trek?

        • twocee

My first thought was “why did she kill a Tribble?”

    • foodycatAlicia

      Excellent deployment of lady pants.

    • SophiaPehawkins

Lena Dunham may look awful, but her “friend Zac Posen designed” that dress for her.

      • Hell Yes, I Would!

“We’re old friends. We go way back.”

      • heartbot

He is apparently not her friend.

        • Fyolette

I feel like it was a carefully constructed revenge for all her namedropping him

    • golden_valley

What is with designers of strapless gowns?  Are they on a budget so that by the time they get to the bust they have barely enough fabric to cover the nipples?  The dresses worn by Deschanel, by Alba, and by Garner all look like they are taped on just above the nipples while the flowing, billowy skirts are exerting super gravitational pull.

    • m0r0

The two Brits get best of the bunch awards. Some really nude tones out there with NO LIP COLOR. I’m tired of that trend. Smokey eyes but NO LIPS. Stupid fashion rule that needs to be broke. Helen Mirren knocks it out of the park as always. FANTASTIC.

    • Kimmu

I outright started cracking up when Alba was unable to pronounce Benedict Cumberbatch. Bendy dick come on my back!

Amy and Tina were both amazing, totally missed that suit though. Can’t believe it’s Stella McCartney.

      • julnyes

She struggled with every name – what was that about. I loved the amused look on Benedict’s face when she mangled his name.

    • Pants_are_a_must

QUEEN HELEN. That dress is so fabulous, and so fabulous on HER. Love the hair.

I would’ve given so much to have been able to sit with Adele throughout that night. The dress is serious, but she looked like she was having the best time.

      • Introspective

helen is everything. adele is a friend in my head. love them both.

      • Billie_Dawn

Adele had the best speech too. Not only was it short, but it wasn’t the usual, “Wow, gee, this is such an honor.” She was loud and brassy and “FUCK YEAH, THIS IS AMAZING! DANIEL CRAIG, HIGH-FIVE!” Love her.

      • kimmeister

        I particularly love Helen’s earrings!

    • EditKitten

I thought Lena Dunham’s was a personal best. Maybe a better color, but I thought she was beautiful without having to go too far out of her comfort zone. But yeah, should have given her flats. :)

And we loved Jessica Chastain’s everything. She owned the look from head to toe.

    • Anne

Michelle Dockery was my pick for best-dressed of the night.  I literally gasped.

    • Pants_are_a_must

I disagree about Lady Mary, by the way. A woman with shoulders as stiff as hers should NOT be wearing a dress that only enhances that.

      • WhiteOprah

Those exaggerated shoulders made her look incredibly tense- like she needed about 3 massages.

    • MoHub

      Queen Helen wins again!

    • Fyolette

My TOP5 for the night: Lucy Liu in Oscar De La Renta, Michelle Dockery in Alexander Vauthier Couture, Morena Baccarin in Valentino, Taulor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier(I can’t believe I’m saying this) and Claire Danes in Versace

      • Fyolette

oh, and Jessica Chastain’s dress+look was AWFUL. The color is lovely, but what’s with this shockingly unflattering shape and mother-of-all boobsags? and pretty much ANY hairdo would be better than this center-parted swept-back one. it barely looks good on anyone, and this was such a let down.Lena Dunham’s dress looks frumpy and very…Zac Posen.
Zooey’s ODLR dress is meh, truly meh. nothing of interest, and the color is nice, but expected. and that haistyle has to GO.
Rachel Weisz’s dress could be so much better if the thick material was underneat as a lining instead and all way down to the floor, and the sad waistbow was ditched. she’s still stunning beauty though
Love Juliana Marguelis’s dress too, though, but the hair’s too severe, and that fake hair in the ponytail is ridiculous

      • Lisa_Cop

        Lucy Liu wore Carolina Herrera.

    • Jecca2244

I didn’t like either of the Oscar de la Renta dresses which is odd. Were these throwaways that they dug out for them?

    • FrayedMachine

Oof. Adele looks like she’s either going to a funeral or to sing at an incredibly formal concert. I’d love to see her rock a bit of color. I think my favorite out of these is Poehler and Dockery. Damn, both of them look drop dead gorgeous.

      • MilaXX

She’s not a showy dresser, but if that dress had been in a jewel tone, it would have been so much better.

        • FrayedMachine

Oh, I definitely wouldn’t want to see her in something like what Garner’s wearing because that’s just not her style. But when I say color, I do just mean something that’s not black.

          • MilaXX

agreed which is why I said she could have gotten that dress in a jewel tone

    • Janet B

A rare misstep for Julianna Margulies.
Beautiful color on Lena Dunham.Someone who makes her living judging other clothing choices should take a good long look in the mirror.

    • Alison McAfee

I don’t I’ve ever disagreed with your picks so much before! really hated Carla Gugino’s look, but I thought Kerry Washington’s dress (aside from the weird length of the sheer) was very pretty and Lena Dunham looked fantastic, despite not being completely sold on the shoes.

    • Patricia Gillett

From this batch, Amy and Helen are the tops. Everyone else needs a sit down with their stylists.  Or new stylists.

    • filmcricket

Dockery and Garner FTW in this group. I actually really like Garner’s dress – the shape is standard but the fabric is gorgeous; it’s showing up a lot better in pictures than it did on TV last night. Plus she looks divine in red and she’s just generally cute.

Honourable mentions: Queen Helen, who’s only pulling off that dress because she’s Helen Mirren, and Salma, whose dress is pretty standard, but yay for finally getting something that fits her right everywhere. You wouldn’t think that’d be so hard when you marry into a couture house, but there you go.

      • MilaXX

When Garner was standing at the podium the fabric seemed to bunch and make her look like she had 2 layers of boobs. Loved the color, not the fit.

    • ralish

Of course, the Queen and Lady dominated this thing. Royalty.

      • l_c_ann

Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth II?

    • Mary229

I thought Amy Adams’ body looked incredible in that nude dress and it gave off a very vintage vibe.  Would have liked it better in a dark navy or something.   Rachel Weisz looked amazing from the neck up when she got out of the limo and then….oh no.  I was too confused was to why Jessica Alba was even there.  She hasn’t been a note worthy movie in forever.   Agree that Amy Poehler and Tiny were perfection.  Could have listened to them all night long.

      • littlemac8

Do you think they invite Alba because she’s beautiful ?

    • jw_ny

I wonder if Zoey has her black tights on underneath?  ;)

      Michelle Dockery…gorgeous indeed!

I think Emily Blunt looks amazing, but that shade of gold has no life to it.

Is it true that Adele is only 24? I can’t believe that…

    • Fyolette

oh, and Jessica Chastain’s dress+look was AWFUL.

      • Mary229

Ok….I can’t believe I’m going to do this but I’m going to defend Chastain here for a minute.  Let me be clear:  I hate the dress.  It gives her no support/not a good chocie etc.  But can we please stop with the whole “boob sag” thing?  A woman’s breasts having the natural sag isn’t a bad thing per se.  The dress itself stinks but breasts not being pushed up to one’s chin is not bad in theory.   Can these larger chested women just not win?

        • Fyolette

Oh, I was unclear I’m afraid, sorry. I have absolutely nothing against natural shape of women’s breasts, I’ve been talking about two symmetrical sags of fabric on the bodice that hang around her waist level and give the illusion that her breasts actually end up there
ETA:looking back at her photo, her actual breasts look very good

          • Mary229

I gotcha!!!  I totally agree about the draping.  I really didn’t like the dress at all.  Her breasts looked good though.  I like seeing natural breasts just allowed to sag a little bit.  It’s refreshing.

            • Fyolette

I’m trying to figure out where this waist potatosag phenomenon originated from, was it originally a designer choice or was it altered for her and the underlayer (the one that clings to the skin and, well, keeps the actual boobs in place) was fitted for her and the top layer was not?

        • l_c_ann

Problem with the dress (and I agree with Mary229 for her general comments) is that (I think) it gives her sags where her boobs aren’t.  Decorative sags need to go far, far away before they get melded with side cut outs.

          • Mary229

Yes, I see what she was talking about now.  The dress is…not good.  NOt debate there.

        • MilaXX

But the way that dress draped made it look like her boobs were sagging down to her waist, which was not the case. It was the illusion of giant, saggy boobs that made the dress bad.

    • Mary229

Agreed.  I know it’s considered fashionable to do the whole “look like you aren’t wearing make-up” thing.  I get it.  But as a fan of bright lipstick myself….I must object to that.  Many women just look better with a brigher lip.  Period.  End of story.

    • Kimbolina

I hadn’t seen any full length shots of Rachel Weisz until now.  On TV, from the waist up she looked good and I thought, ooh, that’s a nice dress.  And now that I’ve seen the full length…  Just… no.

      • Mary229

When she got out of the limo and I could only see her from the chest up I thought she was fabulous.  Then I saw the full length….

        • Jennifer McClory

I did the same thing.  Out of the limo: “Wow, they’re the best looking couple there.”
Two glasses of wine and half a show later: “Whoa, what the hell is going on with that dress?!  I amend my previous statement.  Girl, no!”

    • Miss_Led

That is a WERQ for Amy Poehler, she looks great AND comfortable! She and Tina rocked it!

    • pop_top

Maybe if I could find an awesome nude dress in my skintone I would appreciate them more,  but I fail to understand why on night where you want to stand out, you wear a dress that completely washes you out. At least Helen’s dress adds some interest with that material and detailing, but Amy would have looked great in a jewel tone.

      • Mary229

You know what makes me sad?  Amy Adams’ gave an interview recently where she said she feels self-conscious standing out.  I legit sometimes think that Adams is shy and doesn’t think she’s gorgeous.  And that just…is a shame.  She’s a beautiful woman and an incredible talent.  I wish someone would help her realize it so that she would feel more comfortable showing up and looking like the stunning woman she is on the red carpet.   She has beautiful skin and such a lovely figure. But sometimes Adams legit doesn’t seem to want to be noticed. She admits this outright. Yet, when she’s on SCREEN—she’s this goddess who transforms into any character possible and it totally convincing. Who she is on screen is in direct contrast to who she is on the red carpet.

    • Laylalola

Zooey is now driving me nuts — I saw her several times last night in that same pose and it just screams 13-year-old posing to me.

    • Eva_baby

I actually like Kerry Washington’s look.  I’d like it more if it had a full underslip, but other than that I think her silhouette was kind of refreshing: no bared shoulders no long train, now full skirt, no fishtail.

Also, i think Tina Fey’s hair deserves a WERQ all by itself!

      • f_yeah_marie

Tina looked stunning last night, but yes, especially the hair!

      • Sobaika

Agreed with Kerry Washington, she’s pulling it off. If it had a tad bit more then it wouldn’t be as polarizing – as you mention, an underslip, or maybe better hair or shoes.

    • OrigamiRose

I winced when I saw Rachel Weisz.  So beautiful but that dress, just… no.

    • bertkeeter

L’Wrenn Scotts dressw awas HIDEOUS on Tina F! Like bad Mad Men wardrobe dept!

    • Frank_821

I felt so bad for Adele. I agree why is she wearing such a matronly gown. If they had gotten rid of the sleeves or have the dress in a sapphire or emerald..a color to match her personality

speaking of such. Lena that is so NOT your dress. It’s an interesting design but she really lacks what it takes to pull it off

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

Hadn’t seen Amy in that little Stella suit – love it! Loved all three of her outfits last night. When they anounced her nomination and she was canoodling with Clooney, I lost it.

      • f_yeah_marie

That was such a great moment!

    • DinaSews

Michelle wins hands down.  And is she wearing cranberry colored shoes? I don’t know if it is because I have been paying more attention the last few years but most of the dresses are rather boring.

    • Coco Cornejo

I felt bad for Lena Dunham. She looked so uncomfortable. She walked across the stage like her feet hurt and she was afraid she was going to stumble.

Kudos to Salma Hayek for keeping those baby heads under wraps.

Adele has a certain charm, but I can’t help thinking that if she didn’t have that fabulous singing voice she’d be working in a fish & chips shop somewhere.

      • Melanie

I . . . don’t even know what to do with that Adele comment.  Yes, her singing voice is why we all know her, and if she didn’t have it, we wouldn’t know who she is.  I just don’t understand the point.  Talent is why we know any (ok, most) of these people.

        • Billie_Dawn

Yeah, it’s a bit like saying that if Albert Einstein hadn’t been a genius, he would have just been a regular patent clerk. Um, yes?

          • Coco Cornejo

I find Adele to be a genuine person. Her acceptance speech was of the “what you see is what you get” ilk. As for the F&C comment, I just meant that I could see running into her in the neighborhood shop and she would be that same kind of out there, jolly girl. I suspect that her working class background informs her fashion choices and perhaps that’s why she relies on what she’s “done” and has already worked well.

      • Dot

I’m sure any given performer would be in another line of work if their individual talent hadn’t made them famous.

    • f_yeah_marie

I literally groaned when I saw Jessica Chastain last night, as well as Morena Baccarin…two gorgeous ladies who can’t seem to dress properly on the RC.

    • Dot

Michelle Dockery’s dress looks as if it was made specifically for her. Gorgeous and nice to see her in something other than black for once.

    • thecitysleeps

Michelle Dockery was the best dressed girl hands down.

    • Puck Thornton

Love Amy Poelher in her lady tux. Hate the shoes, though. With quite a few ladies I thought I loved the dress, until I scrolled down (yes, that’s you Lena, Marion and Rachel). Michelle Dockery’s dress and hair are beautiful, but the shoulders make her look like she’s cold or uncomfortable.

      • mhleta

Ew, the capris are taking it solidly to pre-menopausal suburban housewife territory, and they’re making her legs look really sawed off. I’m kinda horrified. She looked great in her red dress, though, but I can’t get on board with this. No suh.

    • MilaXX

There really weren’t many surprises fashion wise last night. There were still way too many nude/blush colored dresses, still a bunch of sheer dresses,  the body con gals (Halle, JLo, Sofia, etc…. were in full force, and stylist & designers still have trouble dressing non model/sample size bodies. The only thing different this year was that boobs and the distortion or showcasing of them was in full force last night.
I give Lena some credit for trying, but you don’t hide or camouflage hips with yards of fabric. She also should have known better than to wear shoes she couldn’t walk in.
I also kinda like Kerry’s dress, but I wasn’t crazy about the hair.

      • Sobaika

What people call nude/blush tones I refer to as lint-colored. Maybe they look at prettier in person, but I doubt it. They always end up looking dingy.

        • MilaXX

           yep, dingy & bland

    • John Hodgins

“Pretty, but colorless.”  Enough about Helen Hunt, what about her dress?  *sorry, couldn’t resist*

    • Warrior89

      Salma was a total knockout.

I am so hating on every blah, flesh-toned dress.  Ugh.

And Rachel W. is totally on my list of women I’d go lesbian for, but she looks like she hit up a Forever 21 for that dress.

    • Bridget Smith

      Like, check this picture:

Michelle Dockery’s stunning, but she doesn’t look nearly as good there as she does on the show.

    • geans

Strapless dresses on Zooey always look way too low to me.

    • algaechick

Is it just me, or does Zooey Deschanel look like she’s tipping to the side like a mad teapot?

    • Le_Sigh

Michelle dockery was my fave RC look!  And then our beloved Queen Helen (but she always wins for me).

What was with all the bridesmaids shoes?  I usually don’t mind them if skillfully deployed, but holy crap my eye was twitching by the end of this post.

    • Susi R

I wonder if Zooey is wearing tights under her dress.

    • Bridget Smith

I would like to see Adele wear a color. It seems like she’s always wearing black. Even, say, a plum would look amazing on her and be something a little different.

      • Stubenville

A deep navy (see Field, Sally) or a dark wine red would work as well on her. too.

    • msdamselfly

WOw!  Did you guys get enough sleep?  Had your morning coffees yet?
I thought this year’s crop of dresses were more flattering, less slutty and altogether more attractive than any I can remember.

    • GorgeousThings

Those pearls of Zooey’s probably cost upwards of a quarter million dollars.

“Star Trek Next Generation hair”…. Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

    • Linda Harris

Kelly needs to get rid of the lavender hair and Amy needs more color

    • Judy_J

Question for Jessica Chastain:  Why in the world would you want to wear a dress that makes you look like your boobs have sagged down to your waist?

      • schadenfreudelicious

the first thing that came to my mind was “National Geographic boobs” , why indeed?

    • Donald C. Flad Jr

Kerry Washington’s dress looked better on TV than it does in this photo – Helen Mirren was perfect as always

    • warnerave

michele looks divine! i feel sorry for jessica chastain, can’t she afford a stylist??

    • Lynn Landry

      Jennifer Garner: twizzler

    • Imasewsure

Thank you Helen but most of the rest are yawn. I actually really like Zooey’s dress on her!! No visible tights and a total grown up look

    • Carrieanno

Couldn’t care less if Adele wears the same dress to every awards show.  She looked comfortable and she provided one of the most enjoyable moments of the entire night.  Love her.  She’s a class act.

    • lrober03

While I don’t fully love Jessica Chastain’s hair, I appreciate the effort to keep it away from the dress.  It looks cleaner than cocker spaniel hair

    • Vera

      Lady Mary wins round 1.

    • Ann Martina

I’m so sick of pale women in colorless dresses.

      • Mary229

I am too.  And yet—(silver lining) I am glad that the tanning crazy is over and that the women who are naturally pale are celebrating being pale now.  But yes, I’m sick of the pale dresses on them.

        • mhleta

Apparently Lea Michelle didn’t get the memo about the tanning craze being over. She’s the new poster child, apparently.

    • procrastinatrice

Michelle is truly gorgeous, and my favorite for sure. But I completely disagree about Amy Adams, who looks fantastic and is rocking that nude dress. She is a pretty woman, but  so rarely looks sophisticated…and she does this time! And it looks like she knows it.

    • Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

Zoe is goood!!!! and also Adele, and what the hell was Kelly Osbourne doing there!!!!

    • shelley514

Well T & LO are bitchy bitchy bitchy today.

    • Toby Wollin

It says something that the best dress of the lot is on Her Majesty, Queen Helen of Fantasticstan. Seriously. The rest of the lot ranges from “OMG – is that thing held together with staples” (Rachel) to “You need someone else to go shopping with you”. Seriously. I think Lena Dunham should have rung up Her Mirrenship and said, “Please take me shopping and show me what to do…”

    • Arjay Gallo

GOD I thought Amy Adams was naked.

    • Aidan B

I thought Zooey looked great, but she is totally overdoing the “putting my hands on my hips makes my arms look thinner!” schtick. Find a new pose, girl. You don’t need to be that worried about your arms.
Personal best for Amy Poehler, hands down.
And look at Lady Mary, rocking a modern look! Well done.

    • guest2visits

If Zooey was going to wear pearls at the neck, she should have left them off her wrist. Overwise pretty.
Sophia, Salma, Michelle and Marion; all pretty. Carla, Amy and Jennifer too.
      Really stunning; Julianna (one of her best, even with the see-thru skirt) and Jessica A.(love the feathered clutch), Helen M, Helen H;
(both found the right dresses again); and one of my favorites – Emily Blunt; thought it was beautiful on her.
Confusing: like why would Rachel choose this? Lena looked like she was being swallowed by this dress. Kerry looked sad, if the
lining followed the dress all the way down, maybe. Kelly’s mint clashes with her hair. Jessica C; such a great color for her and it was
completely messed up by the wonky bodice and hair.  And I can’t decide if Amy A’s looks retro, or just dated.

    • EverybodysStarling

Zooey, may I introduce you to a useful little helper called iron?

    • Sarah Caponigro

In response to your comment on Amy Adams…What dress?

    • UglyTalents

Rachel, I can’t! That dress is no. I loved what Amy Poehler wore all evening, and she and Tina were, I agree, great. I thought Jennifer Garner looked wonderful and really “grown up” last night, and Salma always makes my husband forget his name, so I guess she can wear just whatever she wants. I love Lena, but that dress was impossible. Didn’t it take her like 30 minutes to get to the stage? (Also, you go girl.)

    • VicksieDo

In this group, I thought Michelle Dockery, Salma Hayek, and Helen Mirren were the standouts. Jessica Chastain, poor thing, looks like she’s balding! WTH. All the above the ankle dresses were awful.  Jessica Alba looks great, especially the major necklace, but Lord, that woman is B L A N D.  No personality.

    • crash1212

I’m very impressed with the fit of the bodice of the Salma Hayek frock. No baby heads, no bulges at the side. It’s perfection – something not usually accomplished! Well done!

I thought Lena Dunham looked fab – personal best for her – and the fact that she couldn’t walk in her heels to save her life, made me love her even more.

As for Amy Poehler….perfect. She looked fab all evening – especially liked the dress she wore in the opener – this runway look is perfectly “her” – I may have to re-think the Stella hate after seeing this!

    • Stubenville

Always a tricky color, that orange-red.

    • Stubenville

Kelly Osbourne – just no on every level, right down to the Irish Spring soap bar clutch. And will you PLEASE get rid of that stupid hair? That color doesn’t make you look edgy, it makes you look like an over Botoxed grandma.

    • EEKstl

Helen Mirren for the Best Look of the Night, hands-down.  And it wasn’t only the gorgeous dress: It was that QHoFF confidence and sex-appeal.  Bow down, bitches!
I actually loved Emily Blunt’s dress but know what you mean about the color. She still rocked it, IMO.
      I thought Salma looked great.
Wasn’t in love with Michelle Dockery’s dress but she is wearing it well.

    • siriuslover

I thought Michelle Dockery had one of the most amazing looks of the evening. I love, love, LOVE that gown. Just gorgeous. And Jessica Chastain looked horrible. I liked the color, but the fit was horrible and I just couldn’t even deal with that whacked hair.

    • Claudia

      I really love Amy’s shoes

    • Zippypie

I would have loved Michelle Dockery’s dress if it didn’t have those damn shoulder pads!  Ugh!  Killed it for me.  Her hair and makeup look wonderful though.

Helen Mirren is my idol to bow down to in this bunch.  Just perfect.  She is fuckingfantastica.  I want to be her.

      Rachel Weisz – WTF?

and I saw one pic of Jessica Alba where she was holding that furry clutch of hers right over her crotch and you couldn’t see her hand, just fur.  I laughed out loud for about five minutes.

Oh, Amy Poehler’s shoes are fab.  I love her suit, just looks like there are some crotch issues.  She and Tina Fey were the best hosts ever!

    • MandyJane

I wonder if Zooey has black tights on under that dress! lol

    • Sara Munoz Munoz

      Wow, Helen Mirren. Just WOW.

    • CassandraMortmain

I didn’t watch, but hot damn, there’s some serious fug on that red carpet.  Michelle Dockery wins by a mile.  She looks gorgeous and perfect.  Pretty much everybody else ranges from meh to making my eyes bleed.  The worst:  Jessica Chastain’s bodice (seriously, wtf was that?) and Amy Poehler’s entire look.  I know she just got divorced (or separated) but the open-to-the-navel, droopy-boobs-exposing jacket, the capri pants and the red mani/pedi make her look like a tacky cougar.

    • KatieKissinger

Lady Mary killed it and Amy Poehler looked amazing!  I didn’t love her necklace, but the overall look was stunning and very “eat your heart out Arnett”.

    • tereliz

OMG, Susan from Hogfather (read: Michelle Dockery) looks amazeballs in that dress. Love the collar on that gilded bodice.

    • e jerry powell

At least Rachel Weisz had the ultimate accessory standing next to her for most of the night.  I hardly noticed the bottom half of that dress at all because of it.

    • Lily-Rygh

Is it a sign of the apocalypse when the best “dress” in a sea of Golden Globe gowns is a pant suit…and a Stella McCartney pant suit at that?  Amy looked fantastic in this, head to toe.  Of course, Queen Helen deserves honorable mention here, but I think Poehler takes it.

    • Call me Bee

Arrrgh.  Hems dragging on the ground.  Even Dame Helen.  I am so disappointed…
The only gal with a proper hem length was Miss Lena.  I liked this on her–she just needs to stand up straight.

    • bluefish

Michelle D FTW.  Zoey looks cute.

    • tereliz

I think Marion’s shoes are metallic gold and reflecting the dress. The fug girls have a good shot of the heel. Are those Dior, too?

    • Pamela

I could’ve used a metric shit-ton more of Amy & Tina!!  Balls-out hilarious!  And it became pretty obvious how sick of Ms. Hathaway we ALL are going to be by the time the Oscars are over.  (If we aren’t NOW, that is.)

    • tallgirl1204

I think Jennifer Garner deserves big props for effort and looking like she totally left the kids with the babysitter all day to get ready.

    • fabulous

Emily Blunt should have gone with a pinker shade of gold, i.e. rose gold, instead of greeny gold.
Jessica Chastain looked like she was balding with that hairdo.
I am off to try and do my hair like Queen Helen’s – she is just awesome.
Lena Dunham needs a style consult and to learn to pull her shoulders back.
Rachel Weisz, shame on you with that nasty skirt.  You need to do better, Mrs. Bond.

    • marlie

My favorites so far: Emily Blunt (I think it’s gorgeous, AND it looks good on her), Queen Helen, Jennifer Garner, and Michelle Dockery.

    • Eovaai

Loved Michelle Dockery’s dress. She looked so tall and elegant and gorgeous!

    • libraangel

Jennifer Garner’s dress looked so much more pretty on T.V. Thought I would hate Amy’s, but somehow it works. Notes to Sofia, Adele, and Zooey: You always dress the same way to awards shows = you always look the same!

    • slightlybitterkitten

I am defending Kerry Washington.  I think there’s something lovely and deco about it.

    • enchanted216

Really?  I really liked Zooey Deschanel in her Oscar de la Renta.  I think it is true to her style and stunning at the same time.

      • pookiesmom

I LOOOOOOOOVE Zoey’s dress. That color is freaking gorgeous on her, and it’s much more mature than she normally dresses.

    • MsMajestyk

Adele’s gown reminds me of a red carpet version of Mrs. Hughes’ dress.  So funereal.
Yes, Salma’s gown looks like Barbie’s, but at least she doesn’t have baby heads.
      Michelle Dockery, stunning.
      Helen QoFF, hell yeah.

    • bitterk

Sad red carpet showing with few exceptions (Amy, Helen).  Many of these starlets are in desperate need of a gay.  Adele and Lena, on the other hand, need a big black girl to teach them a thing or two about dressing.  You’d think these two were elephants the way they dress.  What are they?  A size 10?  Maybe a 12?  Geez Louise.  Girls, embrace and flaunt!   Especially Lena.  We’ve already seen you naked, the cat’s out of the bag.  Live it up dolls and put away the grandma dresses!   You’ll need them when you’re 70, not now!

    • PhillipWilde

Am I the only one who thinks Jennifer Garner’s dress looks like a Fruit Roll-Up?

      • libraangel

Maybe, but a very beautiful and yummy fruit roll-up!

    • Sau-Chih Feng

Michelle Dockery is killing it! Also, best lady pants suit everrrrr.

I think Emily’s dress looked better on TV.

    • How to Faint

Zoey looks like Lisa Simpson on prom night.

    • Fatima Siddique

      Michelle Dockery wins round 1

    • fursa_saida

I think Marion’s shoes might just be very, VERY reflective gold, and the carpet is turning them that jacked shade of orange. Still a mistake.

    • Don Hackett

jessica chastain and rachel weiss: worst dressed nominations.  rachel, we could have a winner…

      posted by sleah in norcal

    • quiltrx

I’m going to give Carla my win here…she looks gorgeous, and that’s a great, unusual dress. (I feel like I haven’t seen her in a while?)  Runner up to Ms. Dockery–I thought this was a really elegant look.

I’m SO disappointed in the scroll-down on Rachel…I saw it waist-up somewhere else and loved it!  The sheer skirt, ugh.
I couldn’t get over how colorless the majority were.  Like a beautiful gown in black, a beautiful gown with no color just kind of loses all its detail.

Speaking of detail, I would like to think Lena’s dress could be MY dress LOL.  I love the color and the seaming, and I have broad shoulders, which I think this gown requires in order to not look like you’re using your whole body to hold the dress up.

    • Pseudonymous Jones

Have to disagree on Emily Blunt — I thought she had one of the best looks of the night.  The color might not be the absolute best but she looks amazing!  Love the fit, accessories, hair, makeup and cutouts.

    • kathrineb

As usual Helen Mirren looks gorgeous.
Amy Poehler’s look was so fun. I don’t know about the shoes, but she is just all-round amazing!
I like Marion Cotillard’s dress (minus the hem and shoes)… but then I am biased because that orange is my favorite colour.
As a general comment I am getting sick of those pale ‘matches-the-skin tone-of-the-wearer’ dresses.
