Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Lucy Liu in Mary Katrantzou

Posted on January 30, 2013

As two people who love Miss Lucy’s fashion sense and love the work of Mary Katrantzou, we’re finding this moment to be very painful.

Oh, girl.

Lucy Liu makes an appearance on the ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ show in a Mary Katrantzou dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood heels.

Mary Katrantzou Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Luana Teifke

No, honey. No.

It’s just not right for you, nor is it right for sitting down on TV.

Besides, you’re more the fierce, sharp, fashionista type. This isn’t really your style at all, girl. It’s too much of a “LOOK AT ME” party dress, and you’re so much better than that. Ship this off to Lea Michele, have a piece of cake and a good cry, and get your ass in Dior, pronto; mkay?

I like it better in the sitting down shots but don’t think it does anything for her shape.

    • filmcricket

My thoughts exactly. I was surprised how modest it looked sitting down considering how short it is, but it looks way too big for her – and I don’t think that’s a sizing problem, I think it’s a design problem.

Too bad, because I adore the print and the colours look amazing on her.

    • kschwarting

Absolutely.  She’s got a killer figure, which this dress doesn’t show.

    • demidaemon

    • agreed. i like this when shes sitting. but the shape of the skirt is not her friend.

  • Sobaika

I don’t think this is that bad. It could even be Lucy Liu’s dress. It’s just not a sit down talk show kind of dress.

    • SassieCassy

yeah i think that actually IS her dress. who else could wear it?? just at a different place. like an afterparty and with different shoes. when she is sitting down it gives her the look of no boobs and a tummy.

      • I really like her in this dress. Cute!

    •  Maybe, but I can also see China Chow in it – although it might be one of the more conservative things in her closet!

  • charlotte

She could also save it for the next Hawaii vacation.

  • kschwarting

I’m going to respectfully disagree–while I think it looks all wonky in the standing-up shots, it works for me in the sitting-down ones.  The fact that she’s smiling and happy is selling it for me.

    • Vickiefantastico

I’m right there with you. It’s kind of terrible standing, but I actually quite like it sitting.

      • Thirded! I like it…but only when she’s sitting.

      • sweetestsith

Agreed. It looks so happy and delightful (as does she), and kind of makes me want it. Even though it looks silly every time she stands up. 😛

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It looks like she made a dress from the curtains at the local Jade Island restaurant.

    • MoHub

I was getting a Project Runway “Design Your Own Fabric” challenge vibe.

      • 3boysful

I don’t mind the fabric–I was getting a “took great fabric and made a draped and tucked unflattering Wilma dress that got me auf’d from PR”  kind of vibe.

  • Annabelle Archer

Lucy is one I just don’t expect such a major wrong from.  While I don’t love ALL (but nearly all) of her choices, rarely does she choose the wrong shape, the wrong color and silly fucking puddy shoes all in one attempt. It’s a trifecta of awful.  I need to lie down.

    • Alyssa

I too need to lie down. J’adore Lucy and Mary Katrantzou, so this is very painful for me. I’m going to make a cup of tea and try to recover by looking at Lucy’s Globes dress for awhile.

  • Rand Ortega

Ship this off to Lea Michelle, have a piece of cake and a good cry, and get your ass in Dior, pronto; mkay?
Now THAT’S my kind of advice!

Ordinarily, I love me some Katranzou, but this just looks like a sheet from a Hawaiian resort who’s known for their giant aquariums. The shape, the pattern, all flat out terrible.

  • Tatiana Luján

This dress looks like a beach towel.
Her face is beautiful and I love how subtle is her makeup.

    • cooperalden

Yes.  From the neck up…I’d marry her…who am I kidding?…would marry her if she dressed like Chloe Sevigny.

  • formerlyAnon

“you’re more the fierce, sharp, fashionista type”

    That’s my opinion.

In other news, even though he can be annoying, Fallon continues to draw farther and farther ahead in my personal “non-PBS late night talk show host” competition.

  • jw_ny

tacky coral reef shower curtain transformed into toga.

Lucy is way better than this….shame.

  • hmariec19

I don’t think it looks so bad sitting down, but it really does nothing for her shape standing up.  I do agree that this isn’t really her style though.

    • Kate4queen

that’s just what I was going to say 🙂

    • RebeccaKW

I agree.  My problem with it is the skirt, which looks like a wrap dress that has come untied.  When she sits down, that goes away.

  • I love this dress, but I actually think it makes her shorter and ..larger!doesn’t it? Maybe it’d suit better a taller girl?a model?

  • marilyn

I can appreciate that she is tired of winter and just wants some summer to come into her life.   The dress is all that, with a luau thrown in  the mix.  It might be right to wear to someone’s barbecue or outdoor party in the summer, but not now.  Also, those shoes are horrid.  She should have committed to a summery look with some kind of crazy ass sandals.

    • kimmeister

The platforms on those shoes are crazy!

  • SewingSiren

I understand and appreciate the criticisms. But for those very reasons I love it.  On her, standing, and sitting.

  • Maybe it’s because I just got home from my honeymoon in Mexico and am missing the tropical everything, but I love how colorful it is. The bottom is not good and it’s definitely not a sit down dress, but she looks pretty amazing.

  • BrooklynBomber

On the model, the styling takes Wilma a bit too literally.

    • Imasewsure

Yes this is Tropical Flintstones couture! ugh

  • BrooklynBomber

Also, this dress has done what I thought impossible: made Lucy Liu look chunky and clunky.

  • Stubenville

“I can throw up on something for you.” Saffron Monsoon

    • Introspective

      this comment ftw.

    • formerlyAnon

Sir, your command of the canon is impressive.

  • In_Stitches

That’s Boobs Legsly’s dress, to a T.  I don’t think it’s tragic on Lucy, it just doesn’t fit her (flawless) image.

  • SugarSnap108

I once saw a picture of my older brother wrapped in a beach towel circa late 1970s.  That was my first thought upon seeing this dress.

I usually love Lucy Liu’s fashion sense, so I’m a bit perplexed.  Eh, she’s still gorgeous.

  • No it’s too much of a 16 year olds dress. I love the print, but it needs to be completely redone in a more mature cut and she would have WERQed it.

  • Imasewsure

Maybe Leah at a pool party in Miami… first miss in recent memory for our gorgeous Lucy Liu… what an ugly ugly “dress”

    •  She’s definitely trying to tone down the ice queen thing she can do, going for much softer colors and patterns. But her Golden Globes dress was much more flattering.

  • kimmeister

I love that she appears to be having tons of fun.  Dress and shoes, no love there.

  • I feel like I should hate it (fish swimming in a coral reef! in January! cut like a 13-year-old’s party dress!), but I don’t. Is that wrong?

    • EEKstl

If it is then it’s my kind of wrong because I actually agree with you!

  • carolynmo

Thank God, you led with Cate the Great this morning because everything since has been a bit. . . Disturbing.

  • belfebe

Or ship it to Chloe Sevigny.  I can’t wait to see this one on her.

    •  No way to know which one we’d get, either!

    • Rand Ortega

       Meet Leilani…

  • Really? I like it.

  • minnye

Hmmm… I think she’s pulling it off. This may be an odd comment, but I like that she chose a dress that’s a year old as opposed to having to wear the newest thing. She’s clearly having a ball. I love the colors & the bell shaped skirt.

  • EEKstl

Don’t ban me forever, TLo, but I have to say, length aside (it IS too short for TV) that I…don’t mind it??? CLEARLY not LL at her best but…I can live with it.

  • MilaXX

Yeah, this is a swing and a miss. It almost works sitting down, but I’m mostly getting Hawaiian themed party from this. Killer shoes, though.

  • I would argue that the dress is not anyone’s dress.

    •  I like the pattern, but the silhouette is the worst!

  • I disagree. I actually like it sitting down more than standing- it’s colorful and pretty, and the right length to avoid having to tug at it all interview.

  • I like the sitting shots. She looks like she’s relaxed and having fun.

  • Super_Red

I don’t actually hate this. It’s not a great standing up dress on her, but i love the shots of her sitting. she looks so happy and relaxed and the dress is pretty. Not my favorite for her, but it’s cute.

  • I like the sitting shots a lot I think it looks better sitting down than standing.

  • ErmengardeGreen

It’s not hecka flattering, but I think she looks pretty good here.

  • pookiesmom

It looks a million times better sitting than standing, as many have pointed out, but that doesn’t change the when I first laid eyes on this, I did an audible “OH, NO” gasp.

  • It’s actually not that bad once she’s seated (though it’s a skosh too short), but it’s incredibly unflattering on her when she’s standing. And on the model too, for that matter.

  • She looks great, what the hell are you talkin about bitches???

  • decormaven

Hide those shoes, please hide those shoes. I do like the colors of the dress, but the skirt gives me eye twitch.

  • Trisha26

It looks like a PR unconventional materials challenge dress where a contestant used fabric – like from a garishly printed umbrella.

  • Nazzzy

    Nonsense! She looks great.

  • Angel Ratliff

I think she looks happy and fun.  And we’ve seen worse “sitting down dresses” on Lea Michele, so sending this to her would be a gift.

  • Judy_J

I saw beach vendors in Isla de Mujeres selling dresses that used this very print!

  • Lilithcat

At least she’s smiling.  The runway model looks like her dog just died.

  • warnerave

she looks great in it, it’s a fun dress, she’s entitled to it once in a while…

  • ballerinawithagun

I am over Mary Katrantzou’s prints, she needs a new schtick.

  • unbornfawn

This is a very editorial dress. It would look great in a fashion spread. It is fun. Don’t like the shoes or the earrings with it. Not great on her in this venue.

  • It looks much better when she sits down.  Hair and makeup very cute, though.

  • Airkisses

Lea Michele? I was thinking Kerry Washington…

  • subwaycars

    I want it.

I think she looks pretty great, even if the shape is a little off on her.

  • libraangel

I don’t what to say. I was in shock when I scrolled down past her pretty face. How? Why? Painful indeed. This time I can’t even find anything positive. The shoes don’t help.

  • Zippypie

She knew she was going to get a pie in the face, so she wore an ugly dress???  To me, this is continuing the out of sync “pretty girl” style from the Globes gown.  It just doesn’t work on her.  She needs fierce.

  • I thought the sitting pose was best.  But I think she’s not so fierce anymore…she’s not the Ally McBeal bitch, or the Assassin stuff.  I think this is her now.

  • ouch.

  • HM. I love it when she is sitting down.

  • guest2visits

Beautiful lady, pretty print; bad design. I can’t see this dress in it’s current condition on anyone.

  • nannypoo

How could this happen? She always gets it right, until this travesty.

  • It is the ‘paint the fabric’ challenge from PR come to life.

  • Carrieanno

She’s animated, drop dead gorgeous and next to her, the poor model looks even more awful.

  • snarkykitten

it looks like a PR unconventional materials challenge dress

  • OrigamiRose

Hate it standing up but love it sitting down.  Incredible difference in how it reads.

  • bertkeeter

I like it better on PR season?????

    • libraangel

      It’s an Anya creation.

  • Michelle Cunningham

Never mind the dress… what about the FEET? why has noone mentioned the feet?  They are hideously dirty-spray-tan brown.  Someone forgot to moisturize before they spray tanned

  • TSkot

Don’t love it walking out.  But she looks terrific sitting there.

  • olivelovetree

I like it in the last shot.

  • quiltrx

I really like the print–but the shape and stiffness are just really strange.  And those shoes are AWFUL.

  • pdquick

It’s not that bad when she’s sitting down.

  • Damien W

Skirt is too short & poofy. The whole thing looks like papier mache, actually it’s like someone took Alison’s S3 recycled materials dress, sawed off the pointy shoulder, and splattered paint on it. Also, she made the same mistake as Nicole in the green Erdem: not enough bling, and takes the wussy way out with nude/neutral shoes.

  • ccm800

    I’m all “WAIT it’s cuuuuu…yeah, no it ain’t, you’re right.”

  • Why is it not a sitting down dress?  I think she looks lovely!  (Standing up…not a huge fan…)

  • She’s wearing the coral reef background from the Petsmart fish accessories aisle! Once I realized that the little defense I had for this dress was gone.

  • BayTampaBay

It looks fine sitting down.  I do not think she looks that bad.  However, Great Dress it is not.

  • CT14

    She’s almost pulling it off!

  • Yea, no… Love the shoes though.

  • B_C_J

The dress overwhelms her figure when she is standing/walking. It is also very stiff looking. However it improves incredibly once she sits down.

  • spooki C

I can’t stand MK dresses and think just about everyone looks bad wearing them. They’re very artistic and beautiful but just don’t look right on a human.

  • maggiemaybe

That is no one’s dress. That is a “Finding Nemo” bath towel that has been fashioned into a toga by a 6 year old.

  • I hate those poofy dresses. they look good on about 1% of the population. Wait, I think I’ll change that to 0%.

  • It’s the wrong silhouette, too short as well, and the print is just too busy and colors disparate.
