Gant by Michael Bastian Fall 2013 Menswear Collection

Posted on January 31, 2013

It’s WELL past boy o’clock around these parts. Let’s get caught up.

Michael Bastian went large in terms of inspiration this time, turning toward the iconic imagery of legendary American illustrator Norman Rockwell, whose aesthetic can be found in the preppy, red-cheeked New England winter styles and American classics on display here. There’s a deliberate “everyday” feel to the looks, as if a whole bunch of VERY styled guys suddenly posed in their errand-running outfits at the same time. It’s all approachable fashion; easy to wear and easy to understand. Classic guy clothes with just a bit of a twist.

Is it the photos, the pants, or does that model have extremely short legs?

    • PastryGoddess

      I’m thinking its the pants..hopefully

    • In_Stitches

I think it’s a combo of the camera angle, the cut and the fact that he has substantial thighs/knees.

    •  I’m going to have to call them fans of the loose sock schoolgirls of Japan…

    • demidaemon

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Then I realized that these pants are sitting really low on their hips. Like teenager level low. It’s very strange and really distorts how you view the clothes.

    • H3ff

I think he looks like a sausage in most of the clothes. It’s pretty distracting, actually.

      • anotherkate

Agreed. He looks closer to normal in some of the dress pants (and he’s probably beyond normal, and in fact genetically superior like all models), but between the low rise, the giant boots, and the camera angle, he suddenly has cankles.

        • fursa_saida

I think the boots are a huge issue. I also think something about the cut of the pants is making him look like he has child-bearing hips (for a guy), and I can’t really focus on anything else.

      • Sara LaBatt

Agree!  Is it all the same guy?  I hate hate hate the way they chose to fit the pants, the sausage legs are really distracting me, and the tops have so many layers he looks like when Joey put all of Chandler’s shirts on.

  • I’ll take one of everything for my boyf, please.

  • homofascist

A bit too ‘blue blood’ for me, but some of the individual pieces are great.  I hate hate HATE the unlaced leather boots (not sure the point?), but I would shank a bitch for those two tone oxfords…

    • So with you on the hate for the unlaced boots thing. Plus they unfortunately turn the model’s legs into pillars with little shape.

    • portlandmermaid

Yep, the tucked in pants make for squatty legs. Plus, I really dislike unlaced shoes. They look pretentious and make me want to kick someone. With my laced up shoes.

      • homofascist

It is the equivalent to me of a popped collar…

        • Which you may have noticed this shoot is rife with.

      • Louise Bryan

Well, the photos look like a guy tripping….and they will be if they don’t lace up their boots!!!

    • decormaven

My distaste for the unlaced boots is matched by the belts with the extra-long length. Is this a not-so-subtle phallic reference or am I just not getting the “street” influence?

  • alyce1213

I love it, except for the outside cargo pockets — I’ve always hated them.
I must remark on what an absolutely adorable model this is, and perfectly suite for this spread. He’s not very typical, edgy, or angular looking.  He seems to be slightly rounder (?) than the usual thin, overly muscular type models, who seem unapproachable.
Really, really sweet face, like a regular guy, only better.

    • Lori

I join you in being unable to get behind those cargo pants. The pocket placement is even worse than normal cargo pants, and that’s saying something.

    • In_Stitches

He looks like Max from Happy Endings (if you get that somewhat obscure tv reference)

      • alyce1213

I don’t watch H.E., so I googled.  You’re so right, very much alike.

      • Celandine1

Not that obscure, ABC has been using it quite a bit to fill in schedule gaps as well as it’s normal time slot. My love for it was solidified during the episode when Penny accidentally start dating a hipster. Always appreciate it when my dislike of all things hipster is validated.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

          LOVED that episode!

      • RebeccaKW

I thought the same thing.  Not in every shot, but there were quite a few that I had to look at again to make sure.

    • Cautia

The whole thing actually reminds me a little of Darren Criss (whose character Blaine actually wears a lot of Gant on Glee).

  • schadenfreudelicious

does Gant want men to buy these pants?.. cause that model is not selling me, especially the cream colored ones…

  • charlotte

Classic rich hipster chic, but I like most of the pieces individually.

    • Kristin McNamara

Funny you say “rich hipster” because I was thinking this line was screaming “Darren Criss”. Both pretty on point, if I do say so!

      • Kristin McNamara

…though upon further reflection, I may have been swayed into thinking that because of the kinda-resemblance to DC that this model bears, plus the Dalton-like wood paneling on the walls in all the photos!

      • gabbilevy

        Darren Criss, or Daniel Grayson.

      • MilaXX

Nate Burkus dresses like this as well. Especially that distressed leather bomber

  • hughman

If I saw a guy dressed like this IRL, I’d be like “girl, take it down a notch. you’re not on Gossip Girl”. (Not the clothes, per se, but the styling.)

  • Michelle Cunningham

The model isn’t working for me but O M G the BELTS!!  Love them.  My fave pieces actually.

    • LOVE that one with the interesting hook closure!

    • Me too! After noticing the one with the hook, I started paying attention to the belts first and the rest of it after. By and large pretty great.

Hate the open boots, though. I’ve a co-worker who wears his boots like that every day and the heel of the boot hits the floor before the rest of his foot does. Drives me up the wall. Like a little kid scrapping his boots across the ground instead of picking his feet up.

      • Aurumgirl

All I know is the “tough” gals at my Catholic high school wore construction boots in exactly this way.  Along with droopy grey knee-hi’s, layered under droopy grey construction socks, with their (hiked up) kilts.  They sure thought they looked cool, too.

  • PastryGoddess

I’ll take one of each please…

  • Zippypie

Cute hipster wear but TIE your frakking shoes!!!

  • Sorry, none of this feels fresh, inspiring or new in any way whatever. Will the line sell like crazy? Of course it will cause its so very, very safe, and secure looking. But honestly now there is barely a piece there that isn’t already in the closet of most decently dressed men.

    • embers618

I agree. I think if you look in the closets of my husband and a few of his friends, you could recreate every look in this photo shoot, but with more flattering pants and boots that have “functional” shoelaces. Of course, when they wear these pieces, they style them differently so they don’t look like huge douchebags.

  • iCouture

Why does he have “moose knuckle” in a lot of the pants??  Weird.

    • filmcricket

I cannot get that old Robin Williams line out of my head: “These pants are so tight you can tell what religion I am.”

  • Annabelle Archer

I’m just uncomfortable by how tight all the pants are and I keep thinking of Steve Carell in Crazy Sexy Love where he’s talking about how many layers he has on and how hot it is, how it feels like he’s going skiing.  I like my men a little more rugged.

  • Trisha26

Anytime I see guys in this many layers I think of Steve Carell in Crazy Stupid Love wearing all the layers of clothing – t-shirt, shirt, sweater, jacket – saying how hot he is! That’s the reality of this styling. Between all these layers, the cargo pants or the too-tight slacks – it’s a wonder any of them can breathe let alone move! I’ll take the guy 8 up from the bottom in jeans, shirt and sweater.

    • Annabelle Archer

Wow. I think you and I must have been typing nearly the exact same comment at the exact same time.  Jinx!! : )

    • I just think of Joey on “Friends” wearing all of Chandler’s clothes as revenge for Chandler wearing a pair of his pants without underwear on and saying, “Could I BE wearing more of your clothes?”

  • I hate tight skinny pants. and I not only because I can’t wear them. They make thin guys look oddly chubby in the weirdest places. Not in a good way.

  • Nicholas

    AKA the Darren Criss Collection.

    • Cautia

Oh my god, I’m so glad there are several other people who are thinking the same thing I was thinking.

  • kimmeister

Mostly fine, but I have to shout NO at wearing two button-up shirts both tucked in at the same time, skinny cargo pants, and the unlaced boots that others have already mentioned.

    • It’s styling. We’re confused as to why the kittens all collectively seem to have forgotten what that is. Granted, it’s all overstyled, but this is a fashion presentation, akin to a runway show. No one is dressed practically.

      •  I was reading through the comments myself thinking my everyone seems crabby about this. The guys are hot. The clothes, for the most part (except for a few of those sweaters) all strike my fancy. I wouldnt see these guys on the street and immediately think douche, I’d think they actually put in the time to look presentable. But I’m from down South were most guys wear camo, t-shirts and backwards hats. This is style and it is swoon-worthy in my eyes.

      • kimmeister

Yes, but styling can make or break one’s impression of a collection.  Plus, the skinny cargo pants I mentioned are not a styling choice.

  • ojosazules

If I let my laces drag around like that I’d end up planted in some mud or pitching head first over a precipice. But I’m not a cute city boy. Still, it just doesn’t look at all styling to me. I love those wing tips or oxfords or whatever you call them.

    • Deb_Lynn

If you were a cute city boy, you’d pitch head first over the sidewalk into oncoming traffic. (ETA, not you specifically! Just people in general who wear unlaced footwear)

  • formerlyAnon

    What’s not to like?

Well, I’m not in love with the cut of some of the pants – but perhaps this is due to the muscular development of the model?

I can say that the cargo pants are not to my liking. Legs taper too much inwards and the pockets look too big in proportion to the rest of the leg.

I’m not sure what is making all the models look like eunuchs with wide hips, but definitely not flattering male silhouettes here.  Maybe it’s because of all the layers ending up in the waist region?  Overall nothing new here.

  • Frank_821

The clothes are overall nice. some pieces are quite excellent. but the styling is horrid! It verrs into obnoxious douchiness

  • Chris T

Looks like Revenge started the trend of the double popped collar. No thanks!

  • MilaXX

Love it. In some shots the model reminds me of Ronny from Make me a Supermodel, and in others Nate Burkus.
Love the plaid suit even though the way it’s being shown is very Joey wearing all of Chandler’s clothes.

    • ashtangajunkie

I agree – could he BE wearing any more clothes?

  • These looks are so overstyled I just… can’t. I just want to straighten all the collars and lace the boots.

  • Stubenville

    Whoops – comment withdrawn.

  • Belle239

If my husband came out of the bedroom looking like this, I’d send him back to change clothes.  Ugh.  Not one thing I liked about any of them.  Messy and unflattering!

  • I’m into the styling.  The sunglasses are giving the whole thing a douchey feel.

  • I love almost everything–and I love how the pieces were paired.

  • Lily-Rygh

Well.  I guess we all know who dresses right, don’t we?

    (Not that I’m complaining…)

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Dude kind of looks like Paul Rudd with even better hair.  Good dreams for me tonight!

  • Le_Sigh

Boy o’ clock – may it always be that time 🙂

  • umeboshi

i love these looks, but wish the model was taller / had longer legs. the dude is hot, but his short legs are distracting to me and i feel they don’t do the pants justice.

  • WhiteOprah

The stylist for this shoot must really be into layers- a shirt and tie with a sweater on top and then a blazer on top of that?

The clothes are nice, but nothing I haven’t seen thousands of times before.

ITS the same exact thing he has done for Gant for the last 4 season……..come on………..just go back and look..

  • Some of the sweaters are nice, but I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that an accompanying cologne would smell of vinegar and water, if you catch my drift. Looks like a fraternity styled this.

  • I loathe layered collared shirts a la Nolan on Revenge, especially when the bottom shirt is obviously a button up and the top one is a polo and the collar is turned up. It just screams douchebag.

  • Son, TAKE YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR DAMN POCKETS. Impossible to tell for sure what the fit of those pants is like when you’re stretching them like that!

    • MissAmynae

THANK YOU!!  i was scrolling to make sure I wasn’t the only one!

  • TheLaurenJean

God, I want to smack every single one with a popped collar. Otherwise, they are very cute.

  • carolie_king

I love almost all the pieces here, and I know they’re modeling, but I just can’t with the 16 layers on guys.  Real guys are sweaty.  They can’t wear a t-shirt and button-down and sweater and tie and blazer (and hat and gloves and scarf).

  • It is nice to see a dude model with some meat on his legs! The super-skinny-waif-hipster-boy has got to go.

  • model reminds me of darren criss.

  • Derek_anny

Low rise jeans.  Just no.  Low rise slacks.  You’re a moron.  That said, bring the model back in the summer when he’ll be wearing shorts.  Thank you.

  • why does it all just say douche to me?

  • Yuck. stumpy and pudgy-looking. He looks like an over-stuffed bag o’ dough.

  • I would love to buy (almost) this whole collection for my boyfriend. And maybe even that plaid suit for myself, if I could get it tailored correctly.

  • Esz

OMG I just died of Douche Overload

  • sleepycat

question: What most attracts preppy boys and where do I buy it so I can bread crumb it to my house and into my bedroom?

  • Melvis Velour

Being from New England and gone to prep school (with a minor stint in reform school for daring to show up in mismatched plaids), all I can say is….um..yeah…sure, you’d find us with these looks.  Though, there are a few items I would kill for like that loop hooked belt and one of the green polo with the reg/orange bands in the middle.  The rest…git outta heyah

Some great peices that even a guy my age can wear well and not look foolish.  However, even in a catalog shoot boots unlaced and floppy with pants tucked in look stupid.  Seriously stupid…..

  • Kathy_Marlow

I think that belt with the hook needs to come and live at my house..with me..not the other (male) half

  • Diego!

I love these clothes!!! And I love the fact the model is not skinny and has a body similar to mine 😀 I loved everything here! Bring everything on!

  • I love that Bastian still designs clothes that he wants to wear. The marriage of Ivy and Prep styles with a outdoorsy sensibility makes me want to be a fella, real bad.

  • B_C_J

I’ll take one of everything. It’s classic stuff that will take you far if you style it properly.

  • Joseph Gagliano

Taller/hotter model please.  What is this, The Hobbit?

  • guest2visits

There are some nice pieces here (yes; including clothes); but I think smacks in the head are needed for these prepy hooligans
for what they’re doing to the fancy threads!  Stop tucking into unlaced boots! Stop popping the collar on gorgeous wool suits!
Stop… being such snooty incarnations of indulgent wealth!!   Actually, this was a fun little parade of attractive menswear.

  • It’s nice to see a model w/o a strongly defined jawline.  I don’t know who this lad is getting behind the scenes but these shots look very amateur for me.  As far as the clothes, nothing really remarkable here.  They’re wearable and All-American, I guess, but that’s about it.

  • UNF.

  • mmc2315

Those are some very low rise and very tight pants.  Oh dear.

  • This is the first menswear collection I’ve ever seen in which I really felt that my husband could wear the majority of those looks. Now if only I had the bank account to make that happen.

  • oohsparkley!

What’s wrong with me?  I kept staring at the crotches! One after the other. (I’m saying I thought the fit was strange. But I couldn’t figure out exactly why in most cases. A couple seems too baggy/too loose in that area. And some of them seemed to be dress pants made out of stretchy sweatshirt material. ???)

    • boweryboy

That the new vogue right now:  dress trousers made out of sweatpant material.

  • Beth G

Um.  Yum… and LOVE that the model(s) aren’t tiny waif-like men who look like a stiff-breeze would bowl them over.

  • Dear lord, please let the age of the fetishization of skinny boys come to an end. Even this boy (who is shorter than the average model – judge where his hip falls in relation to the door knob) is building out of the thighs. If the jackets are this short on him, imagine if he were a 42 or 44L? And that’s three or more layers of thick fabric you’re seeing there. Who is that skinny and were is it that cold?

  • ccm800

    Love every singe thing!

  • boweryboy

Bland clothes on a bland model.

This kind of “fashion” I don’t get.  I can go to Eddie Bauer and American Eagle and get the same looks at a fraction of the cost.  Although, I would never dress like this.
