Fei Fei Sun for Vogue Italia

Posted on January 07, 2013

And now, darlings, your Pretty of the Day, a fairly straightforward, old-school set of pictures featuring the very first Asian model to grace the cover of Vogue Italia, Fei Fei Sun. Yes, she’s giving face like a pro, but she’s KILLIN’ IT on the hair front. It says that the hair is styled by “Guido,” because of course. Well, Guido, we tip our hats in your general direction, which we presume to be Italy. Masterful job.

Enjoy, kittens.

It’s a stunning editorial, but I couldn’t help but wish they’d left out the one with the cig — conjures up dragon lady stereotypes, especially in this context and with all these beautiful retro styles. It’s 2013, for the love of Guido.

    • Monabel

      Maybe. I saw the sixties-sophisticate.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i didn’t get a dragon lady vibe at all (i would have had she been sporting the awful talon nails we keep seeing).honestly, more old school 60′s Audrey feel.

      • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Well, that’s good. I think I just have such a negative view of cigs these days (ex-smoker and all), that I’m inclined to attach many bad things to them.

        • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Yeah, I definitely got an Audrey vibe from that photo, too. I loved it.

          • Monday1900

And Audrey was quite the smoker I hear.

        • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

I hate cigarettes with a passion but damn if that photo didn’t make me want to buy a pack, just to pose with.

      • http://twitter.com/chylde chylde

i got a bit of a Mrs Robinson feeling from that one.

    • Alisa Rivera

The cigarette pic has a Christine Keeler vibe to it.

    • joything

“For the love of Guido.” My new phrase.

    • j_anson

I think for full-on dragon lady you need one of those fancy cigarette holders.

    • Monica Valbuena

This comment is SO north-american-correct I don’t even understand it XD

  • nannypoo

My god what a gorgeous woman.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Attaboy, Guido! This is gorgeous – exactly what I want from Vogue Italia.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

      She is a goddess.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I can’t get over how gorgeous she is, she is giving both FACE and HANDS. And the hair is spectacular.

  • OrigamiRose

Why can’t American Vogue have pretty things like this in its page?

    • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Dollsaga

the same model was in US Vogue, Aug, 2011 issue. “Naughty Nice”, I think US vogue wanted to show her raw & natural beauty.

      • OrigamiRose

Ah, thank you.  I’ve stopped picking up Vogue habitually but I”ll see if I can hunt down those photos.  Many thanks for the tip!

  • StellaZafella

    Audrey Hepburn is smiling.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

its a total nod to Avedon, Hepburn and Givenchy.   I LOVE this.

      • VictoriaDiNardo

Especially Avendon’s photos of China Machado.

    • MoHub

       So is Jackie O.

guido would be guido paulo the amazing hair stylist

  • http://twitter.com/vintagesewing Vtg Fashion Library

These photos make me very, very happy.  They are just gorgeous.

  • understateddiva

Love the sculptural bobs, but hate the beehives.

    • Pennymac

Ha! I was going to say “Love the beehives, hate the sculptured bobs” LOL.

  • PastryGoddess

    Funny enough..Guido is British.

    Gurl is working it

  • Super_Red

love love love love love. This is freaking amazing. The picture with the cigarette is possibly my favorite (if it’s possible to choose a favorite) dripping with pure old school glamour.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

that is some seriously fabulous hur.

  • MilaXX

Vogue Italia often works my nerves, but props must be given  beacause Fei fei’s hair and makeup are on point & Fei fei herself giving face like her life depended on it.

  • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

The Siegelson cuff is freaking gorgeous (8th photo from top).

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    *faints*

    *recovers*

I will spend the rest of my days looking for my personal hair Guido.

(FWIW: I didn’t get dragon lady from the 4th picture, only heart failure.  swoon)

  • VicksieDo

    FABBBBulous!!!!

  • Nicholas

This makes me miss Eiko Ishioka. :(

  • Pants_are_a_must

FACE FACE FACE FACE FACE FACE

And the kind of styling that surely must have made Tom Ford weep because he will never be able to match it.

OH. MY. GOD. I. DIED.  fucking amazing, stunning, striking…that face!!! i am at a loss for words

  • Trisha26

    The Asian Sophia Loren. Love.

  • AlexisPayne

This was just the breath of fresh air my Monday needed. J’adore.

  • kimmeister

Her eyebrows and lips are amazing!!!

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Every single one – classic beauty and elegance. LOVE. IT.

  • Jennifer L.

*passes out to every starlet in Hollywood* Look girls, it is actually possible to use more than one facial expression! In the same editorial!

  • Imasewsure

Now that is a model…. amazing face, cool ass hair and you can actually see and covet the clothes… love it!! And I hate the beautiful cigarette posed picture just because I hate glamourizing smoking (but this is Italy so what are you gonna do????)

  • minnye

She is so beautiful it almost hurts to look at her. Magnificent, all of it.

  • guest2visits

Really beautiful. The long, lemony gown is amazing; instant 60s chic.

  • quiltrx

Wow, she’s absolutely gorgeous, and the hair is indeed magical.  I had to scroll back up to notice the clothes!  The cover outfit and the dress with the mesh neckline are my favorites.

  • wamalarkey

I love the retro so this works for me. I know, I’m outta date.

  • Alisa Rivera

I wish U.S. magazines would go back to using models on their covers. I know celebs sell–when I worked at a magazine we had to count the number of celebrity mentions in each issue and report it to the advertisers, that’s how important they are. But damn, no actress looks as amazing in an editorial as an honest to God knows what the fuck she’d doing model.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571205045 Kent Roby

That’s exactly what I’ve been saying.  I’ve really grown an aversion to seeing yet-another fashion mag cover with overexposed-celeb-of-the-moment, but I guess they appeal to the masses.  Well, to be fair, I do have a few exceptions, like the W spread on Marion Cotillard, or ANY photo of Tilda Swinton.

  • alyce1213

Exquisite, gets even better the more you look.
I’m getting a Chinese ‘Linda Evangelista’ power from her.

  • Pennymac

    Sigh. So amazing.

  • Jordan Brodley

I’m loving that they didn’t style her has an Asian stereotype, especially for the first Asian on the cover.

  • lulukittie

She is serving it up on a silver platter! Love that tall drink of lemonade gown with the pink lip. I could totally see Betty Draper in that.

  • margaret meyers

Everything the last few celebrity editorials have lacked:
    interesting clothes,
    great styling,
    exciting hair and make-up,
    celebrity making an effort.

  • girliecue

Wow wow, Fei Fei! Can’t get enough of her!!

  • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

    WERQ it, Fei Fei!

  • butterflysunita

She is stunning and really werqing those clothes.  First Vogue Italia photos I’ve seen here that I really liked.

  • librarygrrl64

I love how the hair is retro-ish but also a bit avant-garde and very…architectural, for lack of a better word.

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

Damn! I love mid-century styling!  Love the whole early 60′s vibe here! Love <3<3<3

  • Stubenville

Lovin all of it except picture five, the profile (the photo from the main TLo page.) Guido has done something odd to her hair which throws off the shape of her head and makes her look deformed.

But how nice to have plain backgrounds so we can actually appreciate the clothes!

    • Verascity

That’s my favorite one *because* of the weird shape!

  • Judy_J

Serving up old school glamour with a modern twist. Love it!

  • TLJezebel

The first Asian model to make the cover of “Vogue?”  That is reprehensible.

    • Addictedtowhitewater

Not that this makes it OK but she’s the first Asian to appear on the cover of Vogue Italia… She is stunning!

      • Lingus

The American Vogue has actually *never* had any Asians on their cover. We need to import Fei Fei here, and her little friend Guido too!

        • Addictedtowhitewater

Lingus- I had no idea regarding American Vogue. I haven’t purchased a copy of any Vogue in well over 10 years and am glad I haven’t been putting money into such a narrow minded organization! I agree, let’s get Fei Fei in front of Anna stat! If I were still a teenager Fei Fei’s photos would be all over my closet doors.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FBVC5LBEOWEHBYYCH3A2IZGZHI yahoo-FBVC5LBEOWEHBYYCH3A2IZGZHI

If this is true about American Vogue then shame on them.  Asians have been a very small minority in the U.S. up till now, and not widely celebrated for beauty, but the image is changing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

    dayum.

  • julnyes

She is modelling down to the tips of her fingers. Love this wholeheartedly.

  • Markatha

Love her. Love the hair.  Love it all.

  • pattycap11

    wow

  • PaulaBerman

SO BEAUTIFUL. I barely looked at the clothes because I was so mesmerized by that face.

  • Peeve

    Wow! Stunning woman and styling!

  • Le_Sigh

    GORGE.  More please!

  • Introspective

    FACE. snaps. gay gasps. lurv!

    werq fei fei. just werq.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

    Serving up Fei Fei Realness.

    • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

Channeling the spirit of Diane Vreeland.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

She’s good but….she’s no China Machado!

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I can’t  stop looking at the hair. That is some hair.  And the lady sporting it is stunning. But in some of those pictures, her head under this luxuriant mass of hair looks almost too heavy for the rest of her body.

  • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

    Korean Vogue: in your face!

  • Vanja

    Wow, very classy.

  • thecitysleeps

I love this so much.  Classy and beautiful and old school!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Samuel-Hawk/522821430 Samuel Hawk

Stunning.  This is what happens when they use a real model instead of an actress.

  • MoHub

The hair is amazing, but I also want that matador bolero.

  • shorty j

i just wanna share some love for the makeup, too. i’m mixed with a fair bit of asian, and everyone always (at least in my family) lectures you from childhood about how you can’t wear dark eye makeup or awesomely heavy eyeliner because it’ll make your eyes look ~even squintier and smaller~ and we can’t have that! she looks fierce as shit and i think it’s gorgeous the way it mirrors/exaggerates the natural shape of her eyes.

    • conniemd

Her eyes don’t look “squinty” at all, they look big and gorgeous. Stunning.

      • shorty j

that’s what i was getting at, albeit poorly – there’s this idea i heard a lot of as a kid (and an adult) that people with almond-y eyes should do everything possible to draw attention away from them, and that we sure can’t rock a cat eye or anything like it…and that idea can suck it, and these pictures are exhibit a.

        • naomiow

yup – and my mom used to say Asians – oops – Orientals (this was back in the 70′s) should never wear yellow because it makes our skin look more yellow….. but she grew up during WWII, so her thinking was a product of the times….

  • mjude

bing bing & now fei fei.  FAB

  • kikisayshi

    Killa

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

AMAZING!!!  I WANT TO FRAME THE COVER AND HANG IT ON MY WALL!!!

  • kathryn_dc

    Beautiful.

    Also?
I couldn’t help thinking: Cage Match: Fei Fei Sun v. Bing Bing Fan (Fan Bing Bing?)

  • Deb Oswald

Second to the last picture, can her arm seriously be that thin?  I am used to correcting HS kid’s figure drawings and that looks like an error!!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

Wow. I am going to watch In the Mood For Love tonight and paint my nails coral!

  • libraangel

Beautiful everthing, But I guess the early 1960′s style is coming back: shades of Jackie O. and Audrey.

  • anotherkate

As much as I would hate to actually get my hair “done” like this on the regular, I can’t help but feel nostalgic for times when stars would actually “do” their hair for the red carpet! (And by nostalgic I mean…something else, because I’m young enough that cocker spaniel hair and yoga ponytails are the sad norm when it comes to my actual memories.)

Seriously, starlets? HIRE GUIDO IMMEDIATELY! It’s awards season.

  • SassieCassy

    man she is pretty

  • BPlease

    Very China Machado, right?

    • boweryboy

      Absolutely!

  • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

It is Lovely! I think I would like to apply much of this into my own styling! it seems like a marvelous tutorial on understated but totally head-turning sophistication!

  • http://www.lifeinspice.com/ rose88

Wow!  Love this!!!  That’s old school glam and she’s serving Audrey Hepburn realness.

  • MissAmynae

Echoes of the unmatched Carmen Dell’Orifice.  I bow the fuck down.

  • boweryboy

I’m not getting a dragon lady vibe from this at all.

If anything, this entire editorial is a homage to China Machado/Richard Avedon photos, especially the first picture.  And that is spectacularly awesome in the best way.

    Also:  LOVE. THE. HAIR.

  • boweryboy

I’m a huge China Machado fan so here’s some Avedon pics as a reference point for those who have never heard of her.  She’s fabulous.

    China Machado

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh thank you for this men. How stunning.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    Magnificent!

  • Melvis Velour

I keep coming back to this posting and it finally dawned on me why.  Yesterday, I was talking to the Fabulicious Siobhan (a relatively new BK) and we were talking about how our very stylish mothers rocked looks like this back in the day and I just realized that the reason this looks so good is that it doesn’t appear derivative unlike other 60′s inspired photo spreads.  This is as fresh as what our Mom’s used to WERQ when the look was new.

BTW, that bolero jacket is like TOTALLY Sade in her prime and I know a number of women who will stomp any bitch who’s stupid enough to get in their way into puree to sink their claws into one.

  • ccm800

    bow down.
