Emmy Rossum in Catherine Deane on Jay Leno

Posted on January 23, 2013

We love this dress, but we wish she’d saved it for a red carpet. It’s more of a “standing up” kind of dress.

Emmy Rossum makes an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ in a Catherine Deane dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Catherine Deane ‘Neve’ Dress

Not that this looks bad sitting down; it just doesn’t look as interesting. Besides, much as we love that leather neckline, we think there’s a bit too much going on there to have a microphone clipped to it. It’s distracting. Still, the color is gorgeous on her and we love the shape of it. It really flatters. That’s a pretty hemline, which we suppose is one point in favor of wearing it sitting down.

VERY not crazy about the hair, but brace yourselves: we love the shoes. See? We don’t hate the silly putty shoe. We just hate when it’s constantly deployed with outfits that don’t call for it or on people who can’t work them well. Here, they work great.

OOOOOO THIS IS GORGEOUS! It helps that the lining doesn’t contrast much with her creamy skintone. I too wish she’d worn it to a ‘stand up’ venue.

I’m liking the classy bumpit hair too.

    • http://twitter.com/OperaSickness Opera Sickness

I think that people are, this might be too strong a word, but, *prejudiced* against bumpits. Like the disingenuous nature of the volume bothers them so much that they don’t really look at the hair. They just think ‘bumpit=tacky’ and that’s it.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I don’t dislike the bumpit here so much as the center part. Center part coupled with bumpit is hard for anyone to pull off.

        • fursa_saida

My issue is the whole thing looks a little too princessy to me. Added to the skirt, it’s too much. It would be great if she were in a Disney parody like “Enchanted,” but otherwise I would have much preferred a ponytail.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I dig the hair too, but I have a weakness for the whole big-haired 60s Priscilla Presley thing, so I’m likely biased.

      • quiltrx

It’s the center part in front of the bouf that I object to.  Full-on Priscilla would have been the bomb.

(otherwise she looks fabulous…I love her!)

  • Hell Yes, I Would!

You’re right. The hair. I can’t see past it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

It is unfortunately tragic, that hair.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        It’s Snookie hair!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

This is the one time when a silly putty shoe is an improvement over what the model is wearing.  Thank dog she didn’t go with those ugly hoofers in the model pic.

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

I really like the shoes as well and don’t dislike nude shoes as much as TLo but they are definitely overused.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=194100254 Mary Christa Jaramillo-Bolin

    That hair is awful.

  • SewingSiren

The dress is beautiful. I think I like everything , even the hair and shoes. But especially the dress. Just gorgeous.

  • xmixiex

I love that dress!  I need that dress!

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

Why are we doing bumpit hair again??

Also, I’d be curious to see a here-it-works, here-it-don’t layout of when you think the nude platform pump is good vs bad and why, if you’ve systematized your thoughts on the topic.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

Without presuming to know TLo’s thoughts, I would suggest that it is often a complaint that they are used as a cop-out, when another, more interesting shoe would have been a better choice. The idea of a nude shoe is to elongate the leg and act as a neutral, but often they get used when the stylist/wearer was too afraid to think of anything better.

  • Judy_J

I think it’s a great sitting and standing dress.  Brava!

  • stubbornthoughts

I LOVE her dress!!! I think she seems like such a lovely girl. I’d love to be friends and share clothes – which would be me raiding her closet and never giving back this dress.

  • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

Those shoes are Bland Stripper and I hate them. They don’t fit with the feminine vibe of the dress at all.

  • Imasewsure

I like the shoes, but I don’t love the dress except for the color… don’t hate it, but don’t love it either

  • charlotte

I can’t with the hair, but the dress is gorgeous. Hate the shoes, too, but at least she’s not sporting a unishoe like the model.

  • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

On first glance I thought her skirt was see-through with no lining and I was like WHOA there, naked bottom on tv. But cute. Standing up it doesn’t have that effect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

    What a stunning dress!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Her shoes are far more flattering than the odd ones on the model. She looks great. She’s brave because she often looks so pathetic on her show, but at least she knows she can turn this out when she wants.

  • another_laura

I lerve that dress and I don’t mind the hair, but I hate the shoes as a matter of principle, acknowledging that this particular shoe doesn’t seem to be a *true* Silly Putty (I can hardly believe that I have had this thought), but has a lot more brown tone.

I don’t like the shoes on the model, either.  With so much that is pretty and interesting in the dress, I can see why you’d want shoes that aren’t a distraction, but there has to be something better than this.

  • Jecca2244

the shoes on the model are straight up awful for that look. Love Emmy’s lip color.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I feel like this is what a bridesmaid dress should be, and not those cheap shiny satin things so many women have to wear. (And it works well in this context, too.) Lovely.

  • jw_ny

I’m not sure why the shoes “work great” here.   I don’t care for them…the color is just so blah.  I do like the pop of red on the heel tho.

Emmy’s dress is really pretty, but I really dislike her hair and lipstick color.  She’s always so lady-like, which is refreshing in this day and age…

  • m0r0

Hate the lipstick and hair. UGH.

  • kimmeister

The dress is very pretty, but I dislike the color of the lining.  The hair is terrible.  Meh on the shoes, I’d much rather have seen silver.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It really is a lovely dress — but if I think that why do I keep picturing it in a “Summer’s Eve” commercial?

    • AthenaJ

Running through a field of blooming flowers? ‘Ah, spring fresh!!’ Lol

I really do adore the dress though, and she looks gorgeous.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Not in love with the hair…the rest looks lovely.

  • MilaXX

My only quibble is the light underskirt. That always bugs me.

  • Alyssa Stanfield

I agree on all aspects! This may be one of the first times I have liked a silly putty shoe! Gorgeous dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

I hate the shoes and I think the beige lining of the dress is awful..

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

That beige lining is really strange — it looks like a visible slip.

  • EEKstl

It’s absolutely lovely and the shoes are a perfect choice for this look.  I hope others are paying attention.  Hair is strange.

  • Annabelle Archer

    I have nothing positive here.
I don’t really care for the dress. I feel like it’s more of the sheer and I’m so tired of the sheer.
The shoe works here because it matches the underlay of the dress, but other than that, I think it’s the same old cop out every nude shoe tends to be.  Why not a silver or a sexy black stiletto?
The bump-it hair is not helping and I don’t think that lip shade is her friend.

What I do love is that most of the comments seem to show that I am in a minority.  I wonder what y’all are getting that I’m not?

  • http://twitter.com/HeckYeahHeckNo KC

Do you guys watch Shameless? Its a pretty great show IMO. She’s GREAT in it. I’m really happy for her, because I think she was pigeon holed for a while as her character from Phantom of the Opera. Very virginal, innocent, girly, opera singer, etc….I think the show really lets her stretch herself and show range and more depth than she has been able to before. Heck, I was really used to seeing her very glamorous and sweet looking and then Shameless came around and it shocked me to see her like that. Now I’m used to her looking really grungy and a bit ghetto (but still gorgeous, urgh…so annoying, lol) and it shocks me to see her like this!

  • ThaliaMenninger

That hair is getting on my last nerve.

  • B_C_J

BEAUTIFUL DRESS!! Feminine and romantic and delicate – Ms. Rossum does it justice. It’s a perfect dress for her. The color, style and fit are exquisite.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I am so very sick of Louboutin stripper platform heels. I think the only reason I don’t completely despise them here is because the ugly nude color calls back to the beige lining of the dress, which I also strongly dislike. Meh.

  • decormaven

If I never see those shoes again, it will be too soon. What a pity, because this is quite the look otherwise.

  • SaoirseLee

Ooh, Catherine Deane, she’s an Irish designer. Her dresses are beautiful and I had my eye on a couple of them as wedding dresses. Got to try some on, but unfortunately they are not for the Chesty McBoobsleys among us, incredibly small in the top half.

Looks great on Emmy here, as would a burlap sack, I’d imagine.

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Love the dress, love the hair, I just can’t with the shoes though.  Cannot.  They’re shiny and flesh colored.  They look like they’re made of cheap dildo material.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Who are you & what have you done with Daddies?  Nope, I still hate the putty-colored pumps forever and ever more.

  • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

    Also, her shoes fit.  Yay!

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

She looks fantastic. I agree the shoes work here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

She’s adorbs and I love the dress!

  • DominoEstella

Sick to death of that shoe silhouette. I stopped wearing that shoe 3 years ago.

  • amaranth16

It’s a pretty dress, but I think the lace makes her overdressed for late night TV.  And I agree there is a time and a place for nude heels, but I just can’t with the hooves.  I will be so glad when that trend dies a painful death.

  • shnaggi

Bone to pick with designers -why put such a clumsy lining under a gossommer gather …all I can see is the clumped  nude nylon at the midsection-that’s why we all wish she was standing up.
Hair problem is the her bangs are too long for the style and doin’ a flop like a Spaniels ears…..needs to be pinned and sleek.
Shoes are in my opinion dated…surely we have moved on from this clumsy hoof

  • H2olovngrl

Whoa. I totally thought the same thing about the shoes. They just seem to go well with shade of blue.

  • TRSTL

Gorgeous dress and it looks fantastic on her, standing up.  I’m not crazy about the “creasing” or whatever the lining is doing under the sheer bidice when she sits down.  it gives the appearance of stomach roll which she most certainly doesn’t have.

Why does every curly haired actress straighten their hair? :( It makes me sad.

  • neofashionista

I think this is beautiful sitting or standing

  • librarygrrl64

Hate the hair and, yes, the shoes, but LOVE this dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=635647760 Jean Veldhoven Waitneight

I LOVE this dress!  Too bad it is a bit too pricey ~ $1100.  I hate her hair too, but she is gorgeous.

  • Claudia Hankin Balluff

The original color of the dress makes me swoon. I only like the color of her dress.
