Emma Watson in Peter Pilotto

Posted on January 10, 2013

We are confused, darlings. Our minds are going off in many directions at once. This seems appropriate, given the subject matter.

Emma Watson attends People’s Choice Awards 2013 in a Peter Pilotto dress paired with Tabitha Simmons sandals.

Peter Pilotto Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Carolina Thaler

Tabitha Simmons Bailey Suede Sandals

On the one hand, we have dedicated our lives* to the idea that celebrities should take some risks with their fashion, especially since they so rarely pay for it. There’s nothing more boring to us than a bandage dress in a neutral color or a grey suit with a grey tie.

On the other hand, this dress is completely insane. You can see our dilemma.

It seems almost silly to subject this thing to normal fashion crit, but we have to say, ignoring the craziness of the design, we’re struck by how it pretty much makes her look like she has no breasts at all. Also: the shoes are just a little too on-point. We would have recommended – well, we would have recommended that she not wear the dress at all, but if she is going to wear the dress, then we would have recommended a more toned-down pair of shoes than these. As it is, there’s way too much strappiness going on.

Also: What the hell did Emma Watson win a People’s Choice Award for?

*Not really.

totally agree, why anyone wants to look like they have conjunctivitus is beyond me!

        • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

           Conjunctivitus is the new black.

      • Full on Hocus Pocus make-up. I couldn’t even get to the outfit.

    • Sobaika

Also she was probably there for Perks of Being a Wallflower or general goodwill leftover from the Harry Potter series.

      • Lisa Sangermano

Yep, she won for Actress in Perks

        • It was a teen movie from a book, my daughter dragged me to see it. She was very good in it. Good to see her break away from Harry Potter. The dress is odd, but she still looks kind of cute.

      • Sorry, I basically unknowingly stole your comment. It wasn’t showing when I wrote mine!

        • Sobaika

Happens a lot around here, great minds and all that.

    • Also – the hair.

      • RebeccaKW

The dress is loud and crazy.  The shoes are crazy.  The lipstick is loud.  And then…the hair. Sad and unrelated.  Like her hair person didn’t show up or was drunk or thought she was reading to kids in a library.

        • It looks like really bad 1996 hair and make-up, right? I was thinking of some pictures of my friends and me in middle school…

          • Verascity

I laughed when I got to this comment because I was EXACTLY thinking 1996 as I scrolled down. Well-spotted.

    • clatie

I just can’t with this designer. Clothes look like a 4 year old with ADHD who just pounded a sack of skittles made them.

      • And part of the kid’s method was puking up the Skittles onto the fabric.

        • NC_Meg

Yes, I read clatie’s comment as a six year old who pounded a sack of Skittles together to make them. Like they somehow formed Skittles into fabric.

      • The cray cray…it burns.

    • wisdomy

And to top off the crazy… girl, that’s NOT your lipstick.

      • Elaine Lang

This!   My god, the only thing saving that dress from the full force of my vitriol is that I look at the picture and all I can see are her damn lips.

    • There’s some kind of evil alien staring at me from her bosom.

    • Tatiana Luján

I preffer her on her old style rout.

    • I didn’t watch the awards, but I’m pretty sure she won it for Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is a great teenage coming-of-age movie. (she was good in the movie, but really she won it for being Hermione Granger.)

      • sherrietee

“Yay, Emma!  Congrats for making a movie that people saw OTHER than Harry Potter!”

    • teensmom99

The shoes are actually great–if only the designer hadn’t chosen to copy them to make the top of her dress. I think she should have begun with the shoes and found a different dress–perhaps a simple, one color shift.  & my vote is for the Perks of Being a Wallflower. She was great in a so so movie (though if you ask my daughter, the movie was a masterpiece and better than the book).

    • She won for her role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The top of her dress is evoking the parasite alien from Alien for me. Where did her breasts go???

      • DeborahJozayt

Emma offered them up as a sacrifice so the aliens would attack Noomi Rapace instead of her.

    • TallyLatch

I’m sorry, but the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this was “baby prostitute.”

    • cleverlady

Let’s get two wonderful gay uncles in a room with Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence.  Bet they’d both look divinely better very, very soon.  Poor dears.  They are both so young to be falling through the stylist cracks.  Someone help them… please.

    • DAA Management – AGREED about the hair.

    • nannypoo

Here, for sure, is a look with nothing going for it.

    • jw_ny

Top, skirt and shoes are all bold statement pieces…too much for the eyes to handle all together.  Pick 1 piece and choose simpler pieces to work with it, not compete with it.  Hate her lipstick too.

    • Angel Ratliff

I thought she looked quite pretty on stage. The dress is maybe better from a distance and not an up-close step-and-repeat?

    • MilaXX

weird look, but I like it and think she is young enough to pull it off.

    • DominoEstella

      Love the dress and shoes

    • ralish

I love her, but this is seriously hurting my eyes.

    • Judy_J

This is one of those designs that probably looked pretty good on paper, but did not translate well into reality.

    • Qitkat

TLo is right; this completely obliterates her boobage area. But I love the insanity of it, especially for a show as meaningless as the Peoples Choice Awards.

    • WittyCism

One would think all that skin bared would be somewhat alluring, but instead it’s giving me this flat-chested, really athletic Speedo vibe.  And makeup aged her, tsk!

      • zuzu

I wonder if the aging is deliberate, considering she was just mistaken by Customs at JFK as an unaccompanied minor.

    • MoHub

Can’t look at it any more or I will have a seizure.

    • trisker

I haven’t looked at all of his work, but everything I see on the RC by Peter Pilotto is crazy-looking.

      • Introspective

I was scrolling thru the comments, checking to see if someone said this before I said it myself.

Peter needs to be banned from all sewing machines, sketch boards and fabric stores. or at the very least blocked from the phones of all stylists. Cause his shit is FUG.

    • Oh, Hermione. This is not your dress, darling. I don’t think this is anybody’s dress.

      • demidaemon

I don’t think any of Pilotto’s dresses are anybodies’ dresss. I hope that makes sense.

    • SewingSiren

I think it works for the venue. Although I prefer the longer length, even for someone as young as her.

    • One instance when I really wish she wore (and could have pulled off) the runway version.

    • She should have kept the shoes and started over on the dress.

    • This is Kesha’s dress. Not Emma’s. Hence the problem.

    • Jecca2244

it is short. but wait, is that her real hair? It got long again.

    • Dhammadina

Yup dress is not good but congrats to Emma for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

    • I see 10 peekaboo holes in bodice, and another 10 in the front of shoes – WTF.  Hair is boring.  Chopping off the sort of amazing CRAY of the runway dress didn’t help.  Sigh.  Get this pretty girl some new gays!

    • She said — and I can’t remember the source — that she recently started using a stylist. I think that might be the problem.

    • Also, her makeup is too heavy, even under those harsh lights, it looks slathered on with a trowel.

    • TSkot

One saying leaps to mind whenever I see a Pilotto:  The Emperor has no clothes!

    • She’s struggling with growing out her hair, isn’t she? Stars, they are just like us. I really like her makeup, everything else is bad.

    • JauntyJohn

It looks like a lava lamp exploded on her.

    • I hate the dress. Aside from the fact that there’s WAY too much going on, it’s not flattering, the peplum is hiddy, and it’s too short. T’is a shame, because I do love Emma here.

Also, the award was probably for Perks of Being a Wallflower.

    • Annabelle Archer

Do we need another K-Stew?  I think the answer to that is no.

    • Tracy_Flick

I have yet to see a Peter Pilotto dress that isn’t ugly and unflattering. I think that perhaps he and Stella McCartney are actually running a long-term piece of performance art critiquing celebrity and fashion. Sort of an “Emperor has hiddy clothes” thing.

      • demidaemon

I heart this and totally agree.

    • mhleta

This has ComiCon written all over it. I really like the print of the skirt, especially the more lurid version on the model. It’s got a cool graffiti fantasy thing going on. That top, though, looks like an extra-terrestrial breast-plate thingy…some  blue alien with no nipples could rock that thing, but it’s really not good for human girls because, you know, where do you keep your nipples?

    • I… kinda hate her hair, to be honest. She seems to be styled to use another very different dress that didn’t work out at the very last minute.

    • Le_Sigh

What the fucking fuck am I looking at?  Its like a bad unconventional materials challenge dress from PR.

Sorry, this Precious Unborn Fawn had an extra dose of Bitchy Quibbles with her coffee this morning.

    • Ridiculous dress – she can carry it off because she’s young, but she’s squashed that ridiculous peplum down and is almost hiding it.

      Looks a bit like a skank’s daughter who’s been raiding mom’s closet.

    • filmcricket

The dress is horrific, but she is almost, ALMOST pulling it off. She is young, slender & fresh enough to get away with just about anything, & I like it better than the runway version, at least.

    • Jessica O’Connell

She won for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Agreed on your entire assessment. This is just batshit crazy. I also don’t like the lipstick color. But otherwise hair and makeup look ok at least?

    • Emily Giovanni

I hate dresses that demand that your eyes squint and/or scan to make sure there are no nipples showing.

    • In the close-up, the bodice is striking.  I think if she’d kept some length on the skirt (maybe not all of it, but long enough to keep the side slit) the entire look would be better.

    • Awful. The dress, the shoes, the hair and – for some reason (oddly, given what a train wreck the dress is), what bothers me most is the lipstick. Women with very thin lips do not flatter their mouths with dark and/or dramatic lipstick, no matter how current the look is. But the eye makeup is flattering, as is the line of the brows. With an ultra close-up of her eyes, this would be a fabulous look.

    • Y’know, I don’t mind the dress, but I may be blinded by how much I HATE her hair. I think she should chop it all off again. She looks so much older and more sophisticated with short hair. She looks about 13 here.

    • snarkykitten

now that is the Franken-Dress to end all Franken-Dresses

    • GorgeousThings

Peter Pilitto got stinking drunk blotto
Then sat down to make Emma’s dress.
      In a vodka fueled haze,
      He stitched many days
But all the girl got was this mess.

    • BrooklynBomber

    • Good God, the close-up photo terrifies! It’s the EXACT same make-up Joel Grey wore as the MC in “Cabaret.” That + the head tilt and I’ll be humming “Willkommen” all damned day. As for the dress, it looks like a Shrinky Dink gone terribly wrong.

    • procrastinatrice

LOVE IT! She is sellin’, I am buyin’. I think this was a fashion risk that actually worked.

      • procrastinatrice

P.S.: It’s a very difficult dress, but she has the bod for it, and I think she is pulling it off.

    • MK03

The cut of the top makes her look like a linebacker. Do you know how hard it is to make EMMA WATSON look beefy and broad-shouldered?!?!

    • l_c_ann

She got an award for being herself, regardless of what the label might say.

Peter P certainly is making a number of young women look awkward.

    • kimmeister

Every single thing about this look is terrible!  I think I just got eye cancer.

    • Lily-Rygh

Horrible dress, horrible hair, horrible lip color, horrible idea.  Hermione, isn’t there some sort of spell you can cast on your stylist?  This is just…horrible.

    • Super_Red

uhm… I like her hair and makeup. *cough*

That dress is… uhm… Yeah. Cra to the zy. Oh Emma. You can do so much better than this.

    • mjude

i am only giving her a pass because i think she is adorable & what the hell she is young.

    • she’d win an imgur choice award, the interwebz are obsessed with her.

    • Stubenville

      [Tim Gunn voice] “Clown clothes.”

    • KSpence

      I miss her pixie cut.

    • stubbornthoughts

Oh goodness. Emma, you are way more beautiful than this dress. Stick to sleek and chic, you rock that shit.

T Lo, she won for her portrayal of Sam in the delightful and heartbreaking high school film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower. See it, love it, talk about it.

    • suzq

The part I don’t understand is why she cut the skirt off but kept the peplum.

    • Monday1900

I literally said “Whoa!” when I scrolled down–that just might be the most hideous dress I’ve ever seen.  Who is this designer anyhow?  I’ve yet to see anything at all appealing from him.

    • jmorino08

I have already spent too much time staring at her chest, so I’m going to have to be OK with not knowing how whatever is or isn’t happening on her chest is or isn’t actually happening. I am anatomically vexed.

    • sweetlilvoice

I agree, I keep thinking about her poor smooshed chest. It looks uncomfortable but it’s nice to see her looking youthful. Great legs.

    • BeeBeauNYC

It makes her look so tall! I like the look.

    • I scrolled down and shrieked

    • Scarlet39

I’m surprised Kerry Washington didn’t get her hands on this one!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Burn in hell, Pilotto. I will say no more.

    • RocknRollmom

Wow, I am developing a visceral dislike to anything with this designer name on it.  Becoming my new “Stella”.  And while I appreciate the concerns TLo have regarding the shoes, I just can’t get over their awesomeness and my overwhelming desire to say “mine mine mine.”  However, I find the price tags usually associated with Tabitha Simmons to be just ridiculously stupid.  And this from someone who is not always known for her economic restraint when it comes to leather goods on her feet.

    • julnyes

This is all wrong, all so very wrong. She is lovely and this outfit and styling is a travesty.

    • marilyn

You missed her hair.  It is awful.  This is supposed to be a trendy look, and she has Hermoine hair. The color of the lipstick is too harsh.

    • My brain locked up.  How can she look so prim with that much skin showing?

    • I am just shocked that the shoes managed to be matchy matchy.

    • Anathema_Device

Peter Pilotto has really lost the plot with the most recent collection. In their previous collections, I lusted after several pieces. Most of the stuff I’ve seen recently is just plain fugly.

for this dress, I would have lost the peplum and kept the longer skirt.

    • Is that … an angry bull skull on her chest? It looks like Picasso drew her dress. She’s the people’s choice for most adorable, regardless.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Do you think he eats certain kinds of mushrooms before he starts designing something?

    • snarkalicious

This whole get-up just looks excruciatingly uncomfortable.  How on earth did she sit down?

    • Sad hair, obnoxious make up, ugly shoes.  I don’t mind that she looks debreasted, but I wish she had worn the longer version that the model is wearing.

    • HK4Seven

Kristin Stewart would have NAILED this look.

    • Her makeup is clashing.

    • librarygrrl64

So are ALL of his designs insane? Seems that way to me. Reminds of PR’s Josh, only with a higher budget and profile.

    • libraangel

Ah, poor Emma! She couldn’t decide on what top to wear to the awards show, so she cut holes in one, stitched them all up in pretty trimming and put one on top of another. And then! Good thing she had a sewing needle in her hand because she found that her skirt was all torn. She quickly gathered all the patchwork she could from Granny’s quilt – oh, and let’s add a leather peplum too! – and voila, a gown for the ball! er, for the phallic award!
p.s. How are these designers and stylists getting so much money for creating this shit?!

    • Another Pilotto Frankendress.  Ugh.  Probably for her most recent movie, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”.

    • I like edgy and it has the elements of such.  However, if I think the bodice looks like a kid cut out a black snowflake and the peplum looks like an exhaust fan, the mystery is gone.  I’m also perturbed that she is among the company of starlets who cut their hair super short and then can’t wait to grow it out.  Annie has shown us that you can grow out a pixie with style.  This just looks like crap.  Sorry, this look (from the waist up) is an OUT.  But I love the short skirt!

    • thecitysleeps

She won for Perks of being a Wallflower which I loved but in which I thought she was completely overshadowed by the two boys.  Anyways the fact that she looks completely flat chested in a concave sort of way is slightly freaking me out.  I like the skirt part though.

    • Is the model’s belt made of cupholders?

    • don’t get me wrong, i love peter, but is that a garbage bag gathered around her waist?  the dress would look more in proportion if she hadn’t shortened it so severely.  any minute the good china’s going to pop out and have a yard sale.

p.s.  her hair and makeup are atrocious!  maybe she wore the dress to detract.

    • barbarienne

I’m going to go with, “You only get to be young and foolish once,” and say that she’s allowed to make daring fashion choices that blow up spectacularly. And I’m not saying that just because all my teen years were during the 1980s.

    • sk8tfan

I love her to pieces but I couldn’t get beyond the hair. That’s the hair I have when I’ve gone one day too many without washing it and I’m too lazy for a hat and I dash out to the store in my sweats and the paparazzi happen to snap my photo. Ok, maybe not that last one, but the rest of it.

    • guest2visits

This would have been a cute dress for her except for the completely uncalled for peplum. And the little gaps/windows should have
been dotted with bright colors (like a butterfly) instead of nude tint.  It would still be crazy but it would look good too.

    • I’m almost sure that fed up with fashion magazines calling her a fashion icon, she’s just wearing the most hideous dresses thrown at her to see if the magazines will continue to praise her “avant-garde” style!

    • quiltrx

Lips are too bright/dark, eye shadow is infectionish.  Hair is boring and childish.

Somehow this dress is better in the long form.  And whatever interest there was at the waist seems to have been crushed out of the version Emma’s wearing.

    • I can’t believe her hair’s grown out so quickly.

    • bd73

not just no breasts. this dress also eliminates her hips.

    • Aurumgirl

      Ugly, ugly, ugly.

    • This looks like something Joshua would do.

    • Ugh.

    • neofashionista

she looks like she has clown makeup on
      but otherwise very cute

    • The bit on her chest makes me think of ladyparts.

      • libraangel

    • formerlyAnon

Just don’t appreciate the dress. If I *did* I can see why someone would like that. It does its weirdness well.

Shoes are a bit leg-stumpifying but she is maybe, just barely, pulling them off. Or maybe not quite.

    • madamemaigret

I’ve  never understood the fuss about Emma Watson. She looks 12. Full stop.
