Elle Fanning in Rochas

Posted on January 30, 2013

It’s an important part of every young girl’s life; a milestone one must pass on the way toward womanhood; a moment that will be shared and talked about for decades to come, with lessons learned which will be later imparted to other young women.

We’re talking, of course, about that period where you hadn’t quite figured out makeup and wore the GOOFIEST damn shoes.

Elle Fanning attends the Virtuosos Awards at the 28th Santa Barbara International Film Festival in Rochas.

It’s endearing, isn’t it?

To be fair, those boots are actually pretty fierce. It’s just that we’re not quite sold on pairing them with that pretty dress.

But whatever. That can be argued. What we can all agree on is that you’re not leaving this house, young lady, until you turn right around, head into that bathroom, and scrub half of that junk off your face.  Otherwise, you can forget the Freshman dance.

  • at least she’s not Shiny McShinerson again.
    She’ll figure it out eventually.

    • Sobaika

Exactly. I can maybe deal with sea green eyeshadow (what is that about??) if it comes hand-in-hand with some powder.

      • I agree, but seriously, what IS it about? It looks like she took a crayola to her face.

    • ChiliP

Yup. It’s funny, I recently wrote two posts back-to-back imploring Elle to consider the wonders of (minimal) makeup. This is what I get in return. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

I will say though, she has the most adorable smile, and she genuinely seems to have fun with her clothes. I find that much more endearing than baby starlets who rush to quickly towards low cuts and high hems.

      • Pinup Ghoul

Agreed. The dress is really, really suited to her! She just needs some help on the styling aspect. A bun or a very neat, low ponytail would have also been a big help here. She’s got the cutest face, she needs to wear her hair back now and then!

    • Alyssa

I’m just glad to see her with some color on her face, even if it’s not quite the right colors!

      • 3boysful

Exactly.  She had to wear something with the all-white.

  • this reminds me of that mad men episode where don takes sally to his awards night. thing.

    • charlotte

       Ha, great minds…

      • yours was definitely more eloquent though, haha
        i’ve only just woken up

  • Cute. How’d they talk her out of the vest?

  • Tamara Hogan

Love the dress, but GAH. Those ROOTS.

  • charlotte

    At least she’s not shiny…
This reminds me of that “You’re not wearing those boots and that makeup” Mad Men episode, just that Elle got to wear the boots.

  • at least she looks better than the serial killer/psychiatric nurse on the runway.

  • Actually the best I’ve ever seen her look.  Of course, she didn’t pick the boots on her own.  Meow.

  • gabbilevy

You do your thang, Miss Elle. She’ll make her mistakes now, but she’ll never be boring.
And… god… I can’t even imagine how awful it would have been if there were cameras and fashion journalists taking note of everything I wore when I was her age. :shudders:

    • meowing

Ah, but that’s what yearbooks are for…preserving the awfulness of my 60s/70s fashions!

  • Introspective

definitely that eye and lip are garish. dress feels easter/first communion (totally in elle’s wheelhouse). the boots are cool but dont go at all with the dress.

was it planned that after years of both fanning sisters appearing on RCs completely untouched by a stroke of anything resembling face paint that on the same day pics would be released with both of their faces way overdone??

I call conspiracy. a girly one, but a conspiracy nonetheless.

  • warnerave

it’s kinda nice but it’s probably more appropriate to wear it into her first communion 🙂

  • decormaven

If she was going to go for 2/3 of the runway look, I wish she had just gone the entire route. That vest would have helped bring the boots into the equation.

  • Snailstsichr

You usually see that smile on someone who just got their braces off. I think the mint eye shadow is cute.

    • MissAmynae

Seconded. She’s only 14, and should be having fun with makeup and clothes.

  • imspinningaround

The boots are serving Sonja Henne realness.  The dress is wearing her.  It’s a push.

    • filmcricket

Liked for the Henne reference, well done.

  • Kim Vo

I can’t hate on her. She’s endearing to me; she always looks like she just having a ball playing with clothes. And why not? She’s still young and getting offered amazing clothes.

  • ecallaw1977

Big improvement, but she still needs different shoes, to wash off the blue eye makeup, and to change her godAWFUL hair color.  I just can’t decide which is more imperative for her to change, the shoes or the hair.

  • Funkykatt

Granny lace-ups, circa 1972 and I rocked them beautifully at 12 years of age. Where is the kissing potion?

    • Imasewsure

I had the same boots (with flower cut outs) when I was 12 … wore them to the Queen Mary the first day…. blisters for days but I looked disco fabulous

    • mjude

      i actually had a suede pair 🙂

    • rajf

ack! I just had a taste/flavor and feel-of-the-rollerball on my lips flashback at the mention of kissing potion.

      • formerlyAnon

        synthetic/sticky, with that penetrating odor

        Sooooo fetching.

      • Funkykatt

        Cherry flavored, YUM

  • The shoes yell uppity sister wife to me.. 🙂

  • captrenault

Are you there, Revlon?  It’s me, Elle.

  • Judy_J

I do believe I wore that exact shade of eyeshadow when I was 14.  I bought it at Woolworth’s (Google that, young’uns!) and applied it in the girls’ bathroom at school, then washed it off before my mom picked me up in the afternoon.  Ah, yes….those were the days!

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Oh yes .. the makeup reminded me of me in the 8th grade (and that is NOT a good thing)!

    • we still have woolworths (woolies) in aus! haha

    • formerlyAnon

*I* favored the blue, not the green, for everyday wear. Green was for bigger occasions.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

The darker side of Marcia Brady.

  • l_c_ann

If she laces up those shoes each time she wears them, any guys will lose interest and wander away and play video games before she’s got one of the shoes off.

  • mjude

the look makes me happy.  the makeup will be better in time.  but i dig those crazy go go boots!

  • Dot

So, THIS is her first foray into the world of makeup on the RC? Oh dear. Also, the white boots vaguely (very vaguely, at that) remind me of Sally Draper’s go-go boots.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed on all points…. she’s so freaking cute though… you gotta love her in spite of the misses and near misses

  • Annabelle Archer

Oh, sweet girl. Bless her heart, she does love fugly shoes.

    • formerlyAnon

I cannot lie. I loved [the right] ugly shoes at her age and I love them still.

  • MissAmynae

I unreservedly love this.  She looks like she’s having so much fun, and her genuine laughing smile is the best accessory anyone could want.

The boots are awesome, and lend an edge to the dress- keeping it from being sickly-sweet. Makeup is just plain fun. If anything, I would change the blush (she doesn’t need any) and the lipstick- its a bit too dark. Otherwise- who wouldn’t want to rock this when they were 14??!!

  • kimmeister

She actually has the coloring to be able to pull off sea foam green eye shadow.  She just learns to apply it better.

  • All I can see is Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader boots.  Bless.

  • crash1212

If you go back and read the comments her sister said – this look make a whole lot of sense. Elle always looks like she’s having the best time it makes it hard for me to fault any of her young’n choices. You rock those white granny boots, sweetie!

    • meowing

I remember the white plastic go-go boots (and I wore ’em proudly), so her boots aren’t nearly as egregious!

  • MilaXX

She looks like a tribute to the late Sally Star. All she needs is a cowboy hat.

  • YoungSally

I want to touch that fabric….it looks like cotton cloque…maybe with a little silk

    • formerlyAnon

Yes. That dress would be totally unremarkable but for the fabric.

  • How many award red carpets have there been this week, TLo? This is number… 6? You must be getting tired. Hang in there!

  • kschwarting

It IS endearing, actually.  The makeup is clearly awful, but I’m sold on her exuberance.  And for whatever reason, the drum major boots aren’t bothering me.  Ah, youth.

  • parfumpoise

I love this. She is having fun with clothes and makeup, something that cannot be said about the 90% of Hollywood relying on mermaid dresses and the most basic of makeup. Every time I see her she’s having a ball on the red carpet, a breath of fresh air from the typical red carpet pictures I see. As a 17 year old, I would probably do the same thing, have fun and experiment with fashion.

  • Cute enough dress, though I hate the boots. And the blue eyeshadow? Absolutely not.

  • Stunning dress, great boots, just not together. She looks like the bit in The Pursuit Of Love where Fanny & Linda paint their faces with the watercolour box and sneak to Oxford for lunch.

  • This reminds me that I haven’t figured out makeup myself. I wish I had a makeup artist. : /

  • butterflysunita

I agree about the makeup, but she just looks so cute.

  • altalinda

Considering some of the things she’s put on her feet, those boots aren’t bad.

  • Alyssa

Elle seems to have a thing for choosing unique shoes…that said, I love those boots, just not with this dress.

  • GorgeousThings

Oh, but Daaaaaads, everyone is wearing neon eye shadow these days!!!!

  • Sara__B

I’d enjoy her youthful experimentation a whole lot more  if she’d just change that limp center-parted hair to something, ANYTHING, different.

  • meowing

Yeah, goofy makeup.  However, I do like the boots on her, and I wore waaaaaay goofier shoes at her age (and, honestly, well beyond her age).

  • Allison Woods

OMG aren’t those the thigh pockets that pretty much got Anthony Ryan the win on PRAS?

  • SewingSiren

So I tell my 16 year old daugter to come look at these boots, she comes up behind me and says ” I like those boots, they’re not goofy”.  I say “Who says they’re goofy?”   …………………Oh!

  • f_yeah_marie

Those shoes aren’t as bad as the weird blocky pair she wore sometime back (can’t remember the designer).

  • If the eyeshadow were a more neutral color, honestly, I think she’d look great.

  • marilyn

Those boots are white, and by definition, are NOT fierce.  They look like drum majorette boots from The Music Man.  She and her sister look more like Drew Barrymore every time I see them.  They also look a little like Brooke shields.  So, if either of those actresses need younger versions of themselves for flashbacks, or little sisters, the Fanning girls are ready.

  • girliecue

The Mary Poppins paper doll I had when I was 7 had those boots. I loved them! Keep on being your fashion-fearless self, Elle.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

The makeup is so fifteen, but I’d wear the shoes. Probably with a short black dress or above-the-knee skirt. This combo isn’t helping her proportions much.

As I always tell my 13-year-old-niece: yes, it’s a beautiful color. Wear it in a top or dress, jewelry, just not your eyelids.

  • formerlyAnon

So right about the makeup. But I’d advise ditching the dress and finding something better to wear with the shoes. Because I like them as much as I could possibly love arctic white shoes.

  • capybara_cafe

That’s definitely the best dress I’ve ever seen her in. I don’t mind the funky eyeshadow so much, since it beats the alternative, which seems to be “completely washed out”.

  • Oh the porcelain doll my grandmother bought me has the exact same shoes. That is so sweet.

  • nannypoo

I agree there’s too much makeup, but at least you can see her face for a change. And it’s less shiny than usual, too.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Awww, she’s cute.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I kinda dig the crazy eye shadow. Especially in the picture where she’s smiling–she just looks so pleased, and that’s half the battle when deciding what to wear.

  • Vainte

She looks like her sister in the last pic. Love the boots.

  • kaycem

…i’m failing to see what’s wrong with her makeup?

her skin looks its natural shade in addition to fresh and dewy (all good for a 15 year-old).  blush is good, although it might be enhanced by her natural tendency to flush; it still doesn’t add up to too much imo.  no contouring that i can see and the highlighting is subtle and not too alien-skin-glitter-y.  her lip color is a stain at best — one that is only a few shades darker than her natural lip color.  yes, she has on a brightly-colored shadow that, while perhaps unusual, is pretty / flattering and not out of place on a girl her age.  it’s solely on the lids and even blended with a nude in the crease to tone it down.  (not to mention that she’s wearing all white, so there needed to be color somewhere.)  no fake lashes, no overdone/over-plucked brows…  the only thing that even looks a little off is that she went for a red-based blush with a green shadow, but the effect isn’t highly offensive.

i’m clearly missing something since everyone agrees it’s terrible, but i just don’t know what.

    • boweryboy

She kind of looks like a circus clown, but at least her face isn’t all greasy and shiny like usual.

  • margaret meyers

Those boots need a saloon girl/lion tamer kind of dress.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The dress looks better on her than it does on the runway, but I am NOT behind those boots. HAAAAAATE.

  • Dress looks a bit large to me, esp in the bodice/waist. I don’t mind the makeup because she usually looks so pallid esp combined with her tendency to wear non-colors. Hate the boots but this is still a win.

  • quiltrx

    I love the dress.

And the boots are Mary Poppins fucking fierce!

  • zingit

I almost forgive her a little bit because those boots remind me of Sally Draper’s awesome white boots, which reminds me of how psyched Elle must have been to put them on. Youthful indiscretion.

  • boweryboy

Elle becomes more and more of a fashion victim train wreck with each and every post.

I would cut her some slack due to her age, but how is it possible that Kiernan Shipka who is around the same age gets it right every time she is on the runway?  I mean, they both have access to the same designers, hairdressers,  stylists, and make-up artists.

If Elle is dressing herself then she should hire a stylist to help her out.  If she’s paying someone she should fire them.

  • As the fug girls would say, this is definitely a scrolldown fug. I thought the dress looked cute, and then I scrolled down. Yikes.

  • ccm800

I’m in – all but the eyeshadow

  • MK03

If she had worn different shoes, this would have been a slam dunk. It’s kind of scary how fantastic that dress is on her. That is HER dress and no one else’s.

  • that eye make-up… girls in high school had *exactly* that eye make-up. being a clueless high-schooler myself, i always wondered if its supposed to look like that.

  • mhleta

I suspect she slathered on the makeup because the white washed her out so much. Better strategy would be to NOT WEAR WHITE if you’re pale and blonde. Return the suffragette boots to Mary Poppins and we’ll never discuss them again.

  • Elleachaudaucul

    Eh, she looks cute.

  • flower753

I like the dress on her, and I like the boots – but not on her. I think her makeup looks fine except for the green eyeshadow (but I don’t wear makeup at all so I’m no expert).

  • geans

    She’s so freakin’ cute.

  • xmixiex

yeah, but, it’s hardly her fault when that’s what was put on the runway… I mean I know, it’s still her choice, but Rochas stupidly put the two pieces together.

  • Anathema_Device

Except for the eyeshadow, I don’t mind the make up. She isn’t all shiny and wan for a change. I like that dress a lot, and because she’s young, I’ll allow her those boots with it. But just this once.

  • m0r0

I don’t mind the make-up if they left off that hideous grandma eye shadow. blech

  • miagain

    That dress deserves better…

  • BeaDee

The boots belong on someone much taller… they hit at a weird place on her and make her not-thick legs look, well, more like mine than they should. She needs to style things less like they are on the runway and her sister a bit more… maybe they should just listen to each other’s advice? Wait… nobody listens to their sister at that age.

  • AWW, she looks darling.

  • libraangel

Does Elle have a shoe thing or something? They are always weird, although to be fair, it’s the same look/match-up on the runway. Other than that, she’s a cute girl; don’t mind the make-up

  • guest2visits

Beautiful dress for her; but the boots are really best left on the RW. Although – they are better than just about anything she’s worn
on her feet for the past several posts.
The aqua eyeshadow brings me right back to those teen days when eyeshadow was as valuable as gold; often one compact or ‘tube’
was shared by friends since most were forbidden to wear it.   Ours was a shimmery China Blue.

  • Are those roots I see? All the pastel and white all the time is sooo boring. this girl needs a (new) stylist.
