Eddie Redmayne in Tom Ford at Virtuoso Awards

Posted on January 30, 2013

Y’know, we think we’ve figured Eddie’s style problems out. He needs to stop trying to be James Bond, all suave and impeccable British tailoring …

Eddie Redmayne attends the 28th Santa Barbara International Film Festival Virtuoso Award Ceremony in Santa Barbara, California in Tom Ford.

… and instead just embrace his natural tendency to identify with Pee-Wee Herman.

No, really. This is pretty nerdy-looking, but we think he looks better in this than all those attempts at making Burberry work for him.

The shoes are awful, though. But then, they would be, wouldn’t they? Dork.

  • It looks a bit like a 1970s leisure suit…

  • OMG! That model is serving FACE! Oh, Eddie does look much cuter toned down.

    • I wish Eddie posed on the red carpet just like the model. Sassy!

      • formerlyAnon

I am convinced he couldn’t pull it off. He’d look like a 14-yr-old mugging for the amusement of his friends.

Not that I’d mind seeing what it’d look like.

    • The model just appeared in a flash of burning brimstone and is about to make you an offer for your soul.

    • sisterb67

All I can hear is Bebe singing “Face face, I need face, Beauty FACE!” 🙂

      And Redmayne is seriously adorkable.

    • Jennifer Coleman

First time with Eddie that the model’s pose is more goofy than his.

  • Aw, he looks cute and less dorky. Let’s all ignore his requisite mouth-breathing face though.

  • clatie

That pic with the model is HILARIOUS!!! I love to imagine the humph-y sound he would be making.

    • Frank_821

it surely is. I love it to no end. I almost expect a big sashy and a double snap

      • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

Just had to look at the Tom Ford collection with him. He  sissied that walk through the whole shoot. Fantastic! And he even has an odd name. Lucho (Jacob)

        • denas silberstein

oooh thank you for that suggestion! me gusta Lucho mucho.

    • margaret meyers

That model (and the cuffed pants) make that suit!

      • clatie

He is my new imaginary best friend.

  • ChiliP

That’s one dandy pose the model is striking in the Tom Ford shot.

    • Kate4queen

Is that the awesome David Gandy in that shot?

  • j_anson

He definitely looks less terrifying here than in the last few times he’s popped up.

  • Spreecord

There’s something about Eddie Redmayne’s face that bothers me. It’s like it all got pushed too far forward or something. Of course, that’s utterly irrelevant to both his singing (delightful) and his suit (adorable).

    • krelnick

It’s like he’s wearing someone else’s teeth.  Agree about the singing and throw in acting as well.

    • formerlyAnon

It’s that oddity which I like.

I still haven’t gotten over David Bowie getting his teeth fixed.

(As you all know since I seem forced to mention it at least once every couple of months.)

      • Beardslee

David Bowie got his teeth fixed???

        • formerlyAnon

Yup. I don’t know if it was all at once or incrementally, but it seems to have been sometime in the’90s (a decade in which most pop culture not aimed at those 8-and-under passed me by).

I think the standard-male-model ones he has now seriously ruin the sex appeal of his previous slightly snaggle toothed teeth (it’s not like they were all that awful, in reality.)

We all need dental work as we get older, and why not get the prettiest kind, especially if you hang out with Iman and other wealthy folks all the time. But I still mourn.

  • TAGinMO

That one waist-up shot (first photo after model pic) should be shown to every male star who considers putting his hands in his pockets on the red carpet, because our beautiful Eddie looks like a big-hipped lesbian with a new pantsuit.

    • Kristin McNamara

omg you’re so right, but put that into words so much more eloquently than I ever could’ve!
I still love me some Eddie though. mmmmmmmmmbaby!

    • denas silberstein

      dead on.

  • Annabelle Archer

He is usually grating my nerve with the quickness, but here, I am liking everything about the suit and I even like the shoes.

  • altalinda

Don’t Hollywood stylists find out beforehand what the backdrop is going to look like.  All of that blue, he just fades away….

But goddamn those hands in his pockets.

    • kimmeister

I nearly didn’t recognize him without his 80 degree lean.

    • Alyssa

Indeed! If only he had worn the tie like the model, I may have swooned. But still, standing straight & closing his mouth…major milestones!

    • lizajane1776

Maybe he thinks every outfit needs a lean, this time the model got there first.

  • prettybigkitty

The model is showing everyone how to give serious MAN FACE!   http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/lucho%20jacob

  • Smiling and not having his mouth hanging half open helps, too.

  • Anglow

I used to think he had strange hair and an ugly face. Then I saw him smile and heard him sing and oh, no, he is beautiful! Strange dresser, though.

  • marilyn

The shirt is what really kills it.  The checked shirt is making a hideous comeback, and it is best suited for square dances, cleaning the basement, and for 10 year old boys to wear.  The suit might be okay because it looks somewhat like denim, and after all, he is in Santa Barbara.  Come to think of it, there is no good way to wear this suit without it looking cheesy.  But those shoes, oh no.

He just needs to go home and start over.

  • Zippypie

Now if he would just ditch the douchey product-laden hair.  Relax, Eddie.  Embrace your Inner Dork.

  • formerlyAnon

I think he’s made for shabby downtown clothes, with maybe a tiny bit of a pseudo-Victorian edge.

Those shoes look ridiculous. And his face is much more attractive in motion than as captured in photos.

Still enjoy looking at him, though.

  • Can someone please sit him down in front of Google image search and show him how every. single. picture. is the same “open mouthed, over-worked hair combed onto the left side of his face” DURH look? And then point him to that picture above where he’s smiling. That smile is KILLER. He needs to work it more often.   /end bitter kitten rant

  • He needs to go weapons-grade FOP! like the model.

But if he could give that much fierceness in the first place, he wouldn’t be such a dork.

  • Imasewsure

Like the suit…. figured the shoes were being looked at from a weird angle but I guess they are officially ugly. Cute enough particularly with a variety of facial expressions for once

  • He looks a hundred times better when he smiles versus when he’s trying to serve FACE.

  • Jill Morino

But I love the pic of the model best of all. He’s all “HEEEEEYYYYYYY!!”

  • crash1212

Best part of this post? The model picture…WTF? Made me laugh. Eddie…don’t care.

  • nannypoo

I like this guy so I feel an obligation to defend him. So, um, it’s not so tiny that he can’t breathe. And his shoes aren’t as bad as they could be. And he looks less like Prince than the model does.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

*Laughing helplessly at the model’s pose*

  • The model photo cracks me up!

  • Monday1900

Best I’ve ever seen him look–but he can’t compete with that model!

  • Carrieanno

I so wish there’d been a warning posted before I scrolled down to that model’s photo.

  • Pennymac

I just can’t with him. He’s teetering on the edge of my irrational hate list, having tumbled off of my irrational I don’t give a damn list.

  • Don’t hate on Eddie! I lerve him.

  • uprightcitizen

OMG.The picture of the model is officially the gayest photo I’ve seen today … and this from a gay man with half his Facebook friends posting pretty damned gay pictures. As to the shoes, I kind of love/covet them. Always like a medium brown shoe with a heather blue or gray pant. And the fact that they’re hombre in color is super cool, IMHO. I think it’s the socks that’s throwing the look a bit. If it were summer and he’d done the barefoot in loafers thing with those shoes and that suit, this would be kind of perfect. Although I’m having trouble getting used to all of these “sans-a-belt” suits nowadays. Growing up in the 70s, that was a look for old men who put comfort before taste.

    • Corsetmaker

Not so much comfort before taste but that older men at that time often wore braces (suspenders) which is what that style of trouser were intended for. Sartorially more correct as the trousers hang properly instead of a man trying to hold his trousers up lopsidely with a belt whilst his belly makes a bid for freedom over the top 🙂

  • Nope, sorry. I am loving this. Perhaps it’s just a gut reaction to all those stupid, boring, suits we see on the red carpet but I have to give this young man major props. He tries. He takes risks. And I love him for it. I love the shoes and think he looks great.

  • bertkeeter

I like! It’s better than that blue ensemble at begining of article…

  • VicksieDo

    Name calling?  smh

  • Winter_White

I don’t think that ‘nerd’ or ‘dork’, or however one sees him in still photos, “works better for him.”  I think he’s an intelligent guy who’s uncomfortable with this aspect of fame, and therefore awkward.  You will say that he needs to get over that!  But that’s my take, because I so love his face when I watch his films.

    • lisep80

he is quite self conscious about his looks – in a recent TV interview here in London he apologised for the size of his lips and for big screen audiences being able to play dot to dot with his freckles! He’s adorable in interviews, charming with impeccable manners. After years of steady theatre and film work gathering praise and awards (Olivier, Tony) this sudden celeb scrutiny takes time to adjust to. He’s talented and cute. I can cope with the odd WTF fashion blip.

  • SRQkitten

Had a bit of a laugh at the idea of Eddie as James. Bond.

Yeah, maybe in about another twenty years or so. He can wear the clothes certainly but not the attitude. Which of course is the prerequisite for James. Bond.

  • Will he please use some damn Chapstick or something? His lips creep me the eff out. It’s distracting.

  • Shirt-love. Wish he’d gone for the tie as well.

  • PrunellaV

    Bewildered at his renown.

  • quiltrx

Adorable!  You channel your inner Pee Wee, Eddie!

  • When I hit the jackpot, I’m going out and getting this suit for my boyfriend.

  • ccm800

  • The model picture is from an old sewing pattern packet, yes? 1984?

  • mhleta

He looks good, but are these self belt pants? I like a belt on a man. The shoes look like they came from Journeys. Not good.

  • Cathy S

Oh, look, he’s standing upright (mostly) instead of tilting.  This might be the best he’s looked.

  • Kristy Evans

Adorable. He has such a quirky face, he should work the quirky fashion. Also that model photo made me laugh out loud. It just looks like he’s saying “Guuuurrllll”

  • MilaXX

This is a better effort for him. I like the shoes, just not with this suit.

  • alyce1213

I don’t know why, but I hate this suit.  He may be standing up straight but he still looks silly.  That hair.

  • traceyishere

Why wear something so inclined to look wrinkly on the red carpet? ANd the shoes are atrocious.

  • yethica

I have this sneaking suspicion that Eddie is a complete nerdy intellectual — too smart for his own good.

  • guest2visits

The model looks like he’s about to pull a rabbit out of a tall hat.  I like the suit for Eddie; the shoes work because of the unique
color and texture of the suit, imo.

  • I’m just pleased he’s finally standing up straight.

  • julnyes

AH HAH – Standing up straighter than ever and minimized wisps!

    still don’t like him.
