Downton Abbey at the SAG Awards

Posted on January 28, 2013

To get us past all the weeping over last night’s Downton Abbey episode, let’s all discuss the cast’s modern dress at the SAG Awards. The ladies have big hair and too much makeup on. It always looks that way when we see them out of costume.

Phyllis Logan, Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech, Amy Nuttall and Sophie McShera, winners of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for ‘Downton Abbey,’ poses in the press room during the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

D’aw. They look cute together. And pleased as punch to be there. Michelle Dockery’s dress is striking, but that’s a lot of side boob. Sophie McShera shouldn’t wear yellow. Phyllis Logan’s dress is a bit matronly, but it’s a beautiful color. But come on, that is some big ol’ hair she’s got going on. Amy Nuttall looks pretty, if a bit understated. Allen Leech is adorable.

I like Amy Nuttal’s dress the best.  It’s basic, but it’s pretty and she looks great.

  • Chickadeep

Cannot get past Lady Mary’s unseemly amount of sideboob. What would the Dowager Countess think?

    • What would Carson think???!!!

    • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

Cheeky British humour. Sideboob at the SAG awards.

  • tallgirl1204

So nice to see them looking their best, instead of their period/class/character not-so-best.  Also, looking perfectly happy and satisfied, rather than cancer-scared, bewildered, bereaved, sour or otherwise beat-up-by-life. Seeing the intelligence and good humor on Sophie’s and Amy’s faces alone tells me what good actresses they are.

    • Sobaika

At least in some of their cases, I don’t think this is their best. I get that Sophie McShera wants to look as Not Daisy as possible, but screaming yellow, colorful makeup, and that hair aren’t the way to do it.

  • Can I put in a bid for Branson?

  • lizlemonglasses

Wouldn’t you want big hair if you had to dress like Mrs. Hughes all the time? (I would.)

    • Little_Olive

Forget Mrs Hughes, at least her character has some oomph. If I played Daisy I’d come out dressed as a fuking clown.

  •  im so bad at placing their real names to their faces… ive only got dockery down from this gang. but now i know that ethel is nuttal is the flower falling one!! … which now knowing that seems really heavy-handedly symbolic, in a way. the same way that lord grantham is a dog’s butt.

  • Pennymac

I think I’m a little in love with Alan Leech.

    • Pennymac

Okay, okay. ALOT in love with Alan Leech.

    •  ill take one to go. with the period drivers uniform, please.

  • beebee10

I love them. Michelle looks gorgeous and Mr Leech is fabulous!
I wonder if they have any idea how big this show is here in the States.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Don’t they all look so much cuter in modern dress, all except for Allen Leech who looks cute in both era’s.  Took me a minute to figure out who Phylliss Logan plays.

  • I love the blue eyes and happy faces in the Logan/Leech photo.

  • Stubenville

I say! They’ve all done something jolly with their hair!

    • j_anson

      What ho!

    • Chickadeep

       This comment FTW.

    •  Sophie McShera’s is more Bride of Frankenstein goes to the gym than jolly…

    • grif wolf

Great line. I can’t stop laughing.

  • Allen Leech……… perfection….

  • crash1212

I love Lady Mary’s hair, but her mother would be scandalized by all the side-boob! They all look great…although, that yellow is SUCH a challenging color. I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t find Allen Leech cute in any era – I know, weird!

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you. I’ll take Thomas (diabolical ways and all) over Tom any day.

    • Imogen_Jericho

That’s okay. More Allen Leech for the rest of us.

  • Zippypie

Allen Leech has just done something jolly with his everything.  Yum.

The ladies look okay.  Michelle Dockery is looking a little too skinny.  Despite the big bouffant, Phyllis Logan looks great in that color and it’s nice to see her looking a little glam!

  • Amy needed some great earrings with color to make her look perfect.  Agree about Sophie & yellow–that is not her friend.  I love how Phyllis looks, even if it is a tad on the matronly side.  Allen’s bow tie = perfection.  Lady Mary, your grandmother is preparing her speech for you about how unseemly your display of sideboob was, and I guarantee the speech won’t be pretty.

  • wamalarkey

Mrs. Hughes! I love that you have to think for a minute to figure out who they are on the show, their transformation into character is pretty dramatic.

  • Have to say, that is one fugly statuette.  Wonder how long before the arms break off…

  • nannypoo

Tom seems to be over his grief and ready to move on. He should grab Ethel. She’s gorgeous.

  • Not that I would EVER tell you two how to do something, but you really need to include character names, not just real names, in these posts. Phyllis Logan looks as much like Mrs. Hughes as I do!

  • If you want to see Phyllis Logan in full “hot stuff” mode, get yourself some episodes of “Lovejoy”, the series in which she costarred with Ian McShane.  You won’t believe it’s our Mrs. Hughes.

  • I think Sophie McShera would look fine in her dress if it weren’t so damn shiny. She’s always reminded me of Peggy and that’s a very Peggy yellow.

    • In_Stitches

I agree; I think that yellow is doing lovely things for her skin tone.  The shininess and the fit, however, are not.

    • formerlyAnon

Her hair looks like she was the last one in the hairdresser’s chair and they ran out of time.

  • Tatiana Luján

    Michelle’s hair is just perfect.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Yes!  This.  I love her hair.

  • aprilgee

It’s making me uncomfortable that you can see Lady Mary’s hipbones through her dress. She doesn’t look unhealthily thin otherwise, but yikes!

  • MRC210

Lady Mary bobs her hair!   And Mrs. Hughes looks smashing.  Love them all except for Sophie’s dress.  Did she forget to take off the make-up artist’s smock after she had her face done?

  • WhiteOprah

OMG- Ethel could be my thinner sister.  I wonder if I could send in a pic and get a walk-on part.  😉

  • siriuslover

Thank you! I missed the SAG awards and wanted to see what they wore!

  • WhiteOprah

We’ve all heard of cleavage and side-boob, but I think we need to come up with a new term for what Lady Mary is sporting.

  • Damien W

    I’m yours, Allen.

  • Sorry, I’m still in shock, I have nothing to say.

  • My god, Michelle Dockery is a breathtaking woman. Perfect skin, gorgeous face altogether, just beautiful.

Daisy, take that dress off now and find something less…awful.

And Mrs. Hughes! Wow. Talk about hiding her light under a bushel basket on the show.

  • berkeleygirl

Forget the sideboob… I caught a clip last night and was stunned by Dockery’s beauty.  She really has a gorgeous face that doesn’t need much, especially with those near-black eyes against the ivory skin.

Leech, though, is the best of the bunch.  Clean and tailored, just adorable…

  • unbornfawn

Phyllis Logan reminds me just a little of Ethel Merman here. In a good way.

    • Pepperful

      Allen, you are the best.

    • Jepham

I can see that. She looks so different without her Mrs Hughes make-up but the minute she opened her mouth she was recognizable. The color of her dress is gorgeous and it’s fun to see her looking so glam.

  • MilaXX

    Mrs. Hughes ftw here.
Michelle had potential, but it’s a bit too much side boob for me.

  • LeBarron

I’m sorry, what?  There are other people in these pictures?  Because all I can see is how beautiful Allen Leech is.  If I were a Hollywood starlet, that’s exactly who I’d be chatting up.  He is all sorts of yummy Irish goodness.

  • imakeart

Since when does Lady Mary have ANY boobs??  I’m always struck by how totally flat she is in costume.

  • Super_Red

I don’t watch Downton Abbey (I know, I know) so I’m not sure who the people are, but holy crap I love that yellow dress. I’m not seeing why she shouldn’t wear it- I think she looks gorgeous, matched by the lovely lady in the black non-sideboob dress. The blue dress is lovely on the wearer, but goodness, I don’t think her hair could be higher.

  • CarolinLA

“Well, shut the French windows!” is my new favorite phrase.

  • CarolinLA

They were seriously underrepresented by the major players in the cast.  Sending Tom and the prostitute along with the two cooks just screams “pity”.  Was there another event last night that required the rest?

    • Corsetmaker

Phyllis Logan is a very well respected and established actress. One of the bigger names in the cast. Certainly on a par with Penelope Wilton, Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter for instance. Also I’d assume there’s a budget to send cast members to these things and it isn’t just around the corner after all.

    • Imogen_Jericho

Ahem, Mrs. Hughes is not a cook!

  • decormaven

What a revelation to see Phyllis Logan out of character. That’s a real testament to the power of good costuming, hair/makeup, and acting skills, because I would not have recognized her otherwise. I love these photos- they could have sent Pharoah to pick up the award and I would have been happy- I love this show that much.

  • thecitysleeps

Amy Nuttall’s dress is my favourite.  So pretty and classy.  I love Michelle and that is a lovely dress if it wasn’t for the side boob.  That’s just tacky.

Allen Leech is the cuuuuuutest. Love his bow tie.

  • miagain

Amy Nuttal is lovely… what a pretty woman.  And Mrs. Hughes looks grand… please let us all be kind!

  • Le_Sigh

‘Scuse me, I’mma go put Allen Leech in my pocket and take him home with me thanks!

  • twocee

Wait.  Mrs. Hughes together with Al Swearingen??  I must find this.

  • Judy_J

    Allen Leech IS adorable!

  • Dot

    I love Michelle Dockery’s hair.

  • msdamselfly

    Phyllis looks fantastic

  • Corsetmaker

I just stumbled across a great backstage pic from this of Michelle Dockery practically squeezing the life out of Phyllis Logan with the hugest Squeeeface grin:D

  • Corsetmaker

I used to love that, it ran for ages. It was being repeated here for a while but I’ve never seen my favourite episode again which featured the band the Hothouse Flowers.

  • Scott Hester-Johnson

If only there was a shot of Allen Leech from behind. That boy has a spectacular bubble butt which I would love to see in tuxedo pants…or not in tuxedo pants.

  • Like the side-boob (sexiest dress I’ve ever seen Michelle in), and Ethel cleans up real pretty! How tall is Michelle, anyway?

  • BrightsideSusan

Phyllis Logan’s dress would have been less matronly without the cuff on the sleeve.

  • glennethph

Yes, Allen Leech is adorable.  Even in “Rome” where he was a little chunky, he was adorable (also, a little naked too).
