Dakota Fanning in Louis Vuitton

Posted on January 24, 2013

Okay, let’s start with the good parts before we get to the bitchin’ and the moanin’.

Dakota Fanning attends the ‘Very Good Girls’ premiere during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah in Louis Vuitton. Shoes By Azzedine Alaïa. Jewelry by Cartier.

Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Models: Janice Alida/Ruby Jean Wilson

Azzedine Alaïa Built-in Platform Shoe Boots

Shes wearing a color! And tights! And visible makeup! These are all good things. On the other hand, that top really doesn’t go with that skirt, to our way of thinking. It just doesn’t do much for her shape. We know it shows more style to interpret clothes away from their runway looks, but we would have clapped with glee had she worn the jacket and the striped tights with this look. Maybe a bit much for Sundance, but it’d be so nice to see her wear something that felt like a complete look, instead of random items paired together.

Still; baby steps. This is not bad.

Is that top good for anybody’s type?
My god, how good does she look with some lipstick on.

    • Judy_J

I also wish she’d gone with the striped tights.

    • hyperionic

      Love that lipstick on her.

    • Annabelle Archer

The first word that entered my head wasn’t “corpse-like”, so huhzah for that.  I don’t know if she was going for “cute” but that’s what she gets.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1447060898 Lori Wade Miller

I agree – she looks great, but the top doesn’t go.  Love her lipstick.

    • lehen

her feet kinda look like hooves in the straight on shot.

      • Annabelle Archer

I am so not a fan of the booties for that very reason. Everyone looks like they have deer feet.

    • teensmom99

If the skirt were a few inches longer, I’d like this.  It’s not a good red carpet look but for Sundance I think it works to throw a few pieces together.

    • MilaXX

I like this ! Roots are done, there is color on her face and even though it’s black, it’s not a color two shades darker than her own skin! This is a win. I agree the jacket would have been a better choice than that top she is wearing, but I don’t think she could pull off those tights.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

        looks navy to me :)

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I saw this picture last night and the first thing that came to mind is … “TLo must be sooo happy — she has on lipstick and a color!”

    • filmcricket

Oof, that skirt. I know it’s the most interesting piece in the outfit, but it is … not good. It’s too short and an unflattering shape, and yeah, just no. I also am sad that of all the 90s trends available, the one that had to make an immediate comeback was the belly shirt. Sigh.

From the neck up she looks amazing, though, and navy is a good colour for her.

      • Tatiana Luján

wich trend would you like to come back?

    • capybara_cafe

A color! It’s a Christmas miracle! She gets a gold star, even if the shoes and top are hideous.

    • ChiliP

She should give baby sis some makeup tips.  She still looks pretty and fresh, but much more camera-ready than the usual consumption look she sports (and I like the dramatic lips here). The Fanning sisters have such creamy complexions, so I don’t want to see either of them caked in makeup- just enough to even out their skin and make their beautiful eyes pop for pictures.

      • Alyssa

I agree, this level of makeup is perfect for her, and her sister should take notes! Her eyes pop, the lipstick looks great, the hair looks much more natural, and she’s in a color! Such improvement!

    • nannypoo

The lipstick is great. Now let’s try a little blusher. And trim those stringy ends. I agree that the top is wrong, and the skirt is too short if you’re not going to wear those fabulous striped tights with it. And after all that, I think for her this is a pretty good look for her.

    • VeryClaire

She needs to get back in touch with her natural hair color. This washed out look is not doing her any favors. She’s too young and cute!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

That’s the best makeup I’ve ever seen on her.  The shoes need to be ritually sacrificed, even if Alaia is, like, a totally important designer.

      • tereliz

ROFL, what did you score on the Clueless Quiz? I’m ashamed that I only got 16 right.

Totally agree about the makeup, that lip color is so pretty on her.

    • tired_mommy

Isn’t it really really cold in Park City Utah right now? I know she’s not outside, but the uncovered skin on the bellly seems odd in the winter.

      • Aly Light

Yeah, having been to Sundance, I’m frankly shocked that anyone would go around in an outfit like this. Usually the stars are bundled up in ridiculous coats and piled up with scarves.

        • luciaphile

It’s a balmy 37F right now. I like her makeup, but the rest of it is not good. And my god, girl. STAND UP STRAIGHT.

    • Beardslee

She looks great.  That blue is great for blondes.  However, I can’t help but think that since she is in Utah and it’s January, the jacket would have erased that whiff of fashion victim around this skimpy sleeveless look.

    • Tamara Hogan

I don’t care if it IS a ‘thing,’ those dark roots BUG ME RAW.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I actually don’t hate the top…except isn’t it snowing in Utah? I just want to put a big horse blanket around her shoulders.

    • Jecca2244

I wonder if Sundance is a stylist’s nightmare.

      • jw_ny

I’d have to think so because the majority of outfits I saw, in pics of people that attended, obviously did not hire stylists….and most were hipster/hobo or just batshit crazy.

    • Aly Light

A bit much for Sundance? She’s like, not wearing any clothes here. Do you know how cold it is at Sundance? I don’t care if it breaks the code of “only wear black”, the jacket and tights would at least provide some warmth!

      • Kayceed

I think it looks a bit random and only half-done.

    • Susan Sontag

I love everything about it.  The sleeveless sweater is cute and sort of casual chic.  Those striped tights are just silly, and the jacket is old ladyish.

    • EEKstl

Both pieces are great and I’m actually fine with them together.  Pet peeve, tho: Tights should be opaque and not sheer with this look (I know the lights are not helping, but still…).  Throws everything off.  Now the skirt seems too short, whereas with opaque tights it would have been a fine length.  Lipstick looks great.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_26F5YJPMIK5OMIMBUBYFZISM6A Howard

Looks like she raided someones else’s closet . Love the shoes but seems like she is still figuring out her personal style. I  don’t get much of anything about her style from how she put this outfit together.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

A saturated color and lipstick and I’m jumping up and down for joy. She looks cute.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        I agree.

    • jw_ny

I was browsing through pics that yahoo had posted of the Sundance, and most of the people attending were in sweaters and jackets…most were extremely casual too.  I look at Dakota and think she musta been freezing in that sleeveless top, and way more stylish than most there.  I agree tho, she could have had a lot more fun with this…especially those striped tights.

      • l_c_ann

The first thing I thought of was: Freezing!  The second was that the old timers at Sundance may have been snickering at her behind their parkas for bringing her NYC wardrobe by accident.

    • SewingSiren

She (or her stylist) left off all the good stuff. I love the striped bits and they’re all gone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

I also vote yes on the stripey tights.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

      Love it!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Those shoes are fierce, but thy get lost with the tights. And I don’t think finding the same exact color top to the skirt really shows much interpretation. I wish she’d picked a kicky little sweater to go with it – I’m sure she could have found a nautical striped sweater that hearkened to the runway look without being too literal about it.

    • sweetlilvoice

Overall, a good look for her. It’s nice to see some color on her face. I think the top is a bit too short, it looks shrunken. Things like that drive me crazy, I would be pulling on it all day. This is why I’m not in Hollywood.

    • altalinda

Sundance?  Isn’t it cold and snowy there?  (Sorry, no kids, so I’m redirecting those maternal instincts).

    • Carla_Charlton

This look would have been improved with wooly black tights and low-heeled boots, especially in a ski town.

    • Pants_are_a_must

That poor girl, posing in what is essentially a badly matched light autumn outfit in Sundance, a glorified ski resort.

Sometimes my black, shriveled Bitter Kitten heart does feel for them starlets.

    • schadenfreudelicious

kudos for the root touch-up but i still think she needs to change to a more flattering shade of blonde, also sleeveless and bare strip of belly in Sundance? this bundled up Canadian is shivering at the thought…

    • mmc2315

Whoa!  What a difference a little make up and lip color makes!

She could pull off the quirky runway look for sure.

    • kategs

Somehow a belly strip in winter Utah is a bit much.  BUT I quibble, I love the color and makeup.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

she looks cute in the whole “i’m a teen and i can totally get away with this” type of way.  and she totally knows it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

also look at how not shiney her face is!

        • kimmeister

          I marveled!

    • Janet B

Hahaha “Built-in platform shoe boots”. Shoe boots? Really, booties is fine, but these aren’t quite booties I guess.

    • Lilak

Aw c’mon, TLo … Sundance is all about random items!

Anyway, not sure the color scheme + dark hose and booties turn a slightly-midriff-baring sleeveless top and tiny skirt into Just the Thing for Utah in January, but … eh.  She shows too much improvement in other areas for me to make any fuss over the ensemble.
Bosworth’s look was a fail — this is not.

    • mhleta

They’re in Utah in January where they have these funny conditions called “Cold” and “Weather.” Have none of these people any sense? Robert Redford has given you an entire catalogue to choose suitable clothing from. Get with the program!

    • MikeW_Vegas

Why does the picture of the models here make me think of “The Shining”?

      • AnneElliot

Yes!!!  They’re like a cross between Tweedledee/Tweedledum and those creepy twins from The Shining, if that makes any sense.

I think it’s the horrible flocked wallpaper background.

    • kimmeister

Oh man, both of those LV jackets are amazing.  I wish she had gone with one of those rather than the skirt.

    • notterriblybitter

It’s a lot less fun without the stripes but it takes a brave (and very thin) woman to wear horizontally striped tights. The lipstick looks fantastic. I like the shoes off but not on, which doesn’t really make sense.

    • Imasewsure

Actually I don’t mind it at all but I wish she had thrown in some color. The tights would have been awesome but even a necklace or a few bangles, etc would have helped. I was going to applaud her for not wearing blocks on her feet but now I remember that’s her sister!!

    • Kimbolina

I’m just gonna say it.  I hate her hair.  I wish she would do something else with it.  The center part is awful and I hate how the front of her hair always hangs down in front of her face.  Like half open curtains.  It’s not as bad here as other times, but it seems like her hair is always encroaching on her face, just slowly closing in and then it just gives her face a weird, pointy shape.  A side part would look great, or at least just pushed out of her face/pulled back a bit.

    • SassieCassy

      OH LOOK A COLOR

      HOW PLEASANT

    • Drew Macaulay

Her face has never looked better, although her roots are giving her a sort of reverse-skunk effect.  On the plus side, I really like the color of those skunky roots.

    • http://www.facebook.com/D.D.D.Dino Dino Bonačić

      i get a 90′s feel. and i like it! ˆ.ˆ

    • julnyes

I am so happy with everything going on above the neck that I am just going to ignore the rest.

    • marilyn

This is how a teenager dresses when she picks her own clothes.  The skirt/shorts are kind of slutty, and the top is too short.  But, on the good side, she is starting to dress her age.  Maybe she will put away the little girl dresses for good.

    • girliecue

I like all of her choices. Overall she looks great, and even though the top wasn’t the best with the skirt, it is exactly the kind of mistake one should make while still young. That top is cute on it’s own and won’t be wearable and/or forgivable later in life. Lookin’ purty, Miss D!

    • lrhg

Love this for her. Yes it has some problems (starting with that top) but it looks youthful and fresh without being twee. Also, color! Makeup!

    • neofashionista

      Oh no! Is Zoey’s Black-Leg-Itis contagious….!
      Dear God I pray NOT!

    • snarkykitten

wow, she needs to keep that make-up artist, but that outfit is hiddy

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

From the neck up and the waist down, she looks terrific. I love a good sweater, but only when it fits and enhances the look. Great shoes!

    • tereliz

Where’s the parka that goes with this outfit? In the limo?

I love that she’s wearing a flattering lip color as well as a flattering clothing color, but the top is too boxy on top of a skirt that’s sort of, well, boxy. Too much of the same shape. Those booties are cute with sheer black tights though, and the skirt is fun.

Has she just grown boobs or is it the sweater and a push up bra? O_o

    • melanie0866

Tights should have been opaque with a skirt that short.  These are just black pantyhose.  Shoes are cute. Face is shiny.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

My heavens, she’s visible.  *applauds baby steps*

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

It’s not pastel. That’s about all I can say about this.

    • rkdgal

I don’t know if she’s actually changed her haircolor or not, but this shade is more flattering than I remember her hair being before.  She looks alive for once!

    • BrightsideSusan

Agree that as a young womanit would be nice to see her have more fun with her clothes!

    • Trisha26

I would be happy with no bare midriff – anything else would be a bonus.

    • librarygrrl64

I love that shade of lipstick on her! She can rock a dark pink.

    • guest2visits

This was all very pretty except the middle, where the top meets the skirt.
The gap and the bulkiness of the material at the waist makes the outfit feel cheap; for Louis Vuitton.
She did great with hair, make-up, and her tights and shoes.

    • Sara LaBatt

Hate that top but boy is navy a beautiful color on her!  A step in the right direction for sure.

    • momogus

She looks great – age-appropriate, but also edgy – though I’m glad she’s wearing dark hose so I can’t really see those shoes.

    • elemspbee

this is terrible. she looks thick all around. Top and skirt look as if they shrunk in the dryer but she had not choice but wear it. Black tights and booties look awful on her.
Looking at this makes me annoyed.

    • sleah in norcal

i guess everyone but me loves the cherry red lips.  i feel like the lone ranger, but to me they just look out of place on her.
