Critics’ Choice Awards 2013 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on January 11, 2013

Awards season, darlings! If you’re not sick of all these people yet, just give it a day or two.

Let ‘er rip, celebs.

Amy Adams in Vionnet

Don’t love the hair and the skirt’s maybe a bit too complicated for its own good, but she looks pretty.

Bradley Cooper in Tom Ford

We have no idea why this guy has so much trouble getting his suits to fit properly. It’s a good look, but the jacket’s too tight and the pants are a skosh too long.

And of course, he should shave.

Chris Tucker

Why is everything so long on him? The jacket, the pants and the tie all look like they should be a couple inches shorter.

Clea Duvall in Tadashi Shoji

Enh. Seen it. Plenty of times.

Elle Fanning in Chanel

Emily Blunt in Miu Miu

Wow. We don’t like anything going on here. She looked so good the other day, but she seems to have aged about 20 years since then.

Eva Longoria in Monique Lhuillier

Pretty color, but there’s too much going on on the front of that dress.

Famke Janssen in John Galliano

 K-Mart curtains.

Gloria Ruben

 Simple, but flattering as hell.

Helen Hunt in Philip Armstrong

Gorgeous dress. You wouldn’t think we’d say that about a dress with lace inserts at the hip, but there you go.

Henry Cavill in Tom Ford

 Sigh. So pretty.

Ian Somerhalder in Dolce&Gabbana

That’s a really nice suit. Love the vest.

Jessica Chastain in Prada

Very pretty. Great color for her.

John Hawkes

We kind of love him for always looking so utterly disgusted by the whole spectacle.

John Krasinski

Looks good, but the jacket’s a bit snug.

Katie Aselton

Man, where are the disasters? It’s all “cute,” “pretty,” “gorgeous.” We can’t do our jobs if you guys all show up looking presentable, you know. Throw a couple of bitches a bone.

Leslie Mann in Honor

Ah. There we go. Thank you, Leslie Mann. You look very … flammable.

Matthew McConaughey in Dolce&Gabbana

If he’d hemmed the pants, this would have been just about perfect.

Melissa Leo

The heavy black hose, visible bra, and lack of a belt all combine to ruin a perfectly good dress.

Naomi Watts in Emilio Pucci

Nina Dobrev in Monique Lhuillier

Gorgeous, but more than a bit stiff.

Paul Wesley

Cute, if a little sloppy.

Sally Field

Oh, nicely done, Miss Sally. It just needs to come in a little bit more at the waist, but it’s a simple, striking dress. She can rock a red. A little showy jewelry wouldn’t have hurt either.

    Chanel’s making bedsheets now?

    • Jangle57

See now I thought bath towels….

      • l_c_ann

In a tasteful home, sheets and towels match, until real life intervenes.
In a very tasteful home, sheets and towels and dresses match, until Momma gets home and reclaims the linens.

      • It’s my Grandmother’s shower curtain, no joke.

      • Elle Fanning in Martha Stewart for KMart

      •  And I thought “bedspread.”

      • LambeeBaby

I thought ole yella hair was wearing a table cloth.

      • Northern_Light_27

         I thought giant dishtowels.

    • Violina23

THANK YOU! Hahahaha, when TLo wrote that she was ruining a pretty dress, I said to myself “Well, it’s a pretty bedsheet….” 😛

    • quiltrx

It’s actually my everyday china…Pfaltzgraff’s “Garden Party”.  Only difference is the china’s background is cream. It’s retired, but you can find it online.  Go look, I’ll wait.

    • loveisblind1

Looks like shower curtains to me! Seriously, the floral prints remind me of my grandmother’s shower curtains. Even the little square pattern on the trim look like straight up shower curtain!

  • mjude

i love when TLO does this kind of post.  as i sit at my desk at work i radomly will shout HA! over a brilliant comment.

  • Henry C came with his girlfriend Gina Carano! Definitely one couple you don’t want to mess with.

    • Sobaika

Holy crap. She needs to star as Wonder Woman.

      •  Holy crap, they’re dating? I…would not mind that leaked sex tape.

Fashion wise, what is up with Naomi Watts lately? Every picture of her I fan myself. She’s been looking sexay.

        • I really, really agree.

And yeah, Naomi Watts has been killing it, which is not usually the case with her.

        • it’s a very recent development. and yes, i’d be first in line to see that sex tape. as for Naomi Watts, could be part of her campaign to win best actress? considering she’s against Jlaw and Chastain, the so-called frontrunners

        • NinaBoo

I am sure someone put TLo’s posts (and our comments) in front of her.

        • LambeeBaby

          Pre-order please.

      • Mary229

She needs to learn how to act first as Wonder woman is about alot more than just punching people. In fact, she’s not about that at all. So yeah….please no. An actress who can act please. I’ve waited years for a serious Wonder Woman franchise and she isn’t it.

        • They should’ve made Wonder Woman with Lauren Graham ten years ago.  Idiots.

        • lovelyivy

We could have had a Joss Whedon Wonder Woman YEARS ago, but DC was too chicken and now it will never happen- or at least not until Marvel has had Joss making movies for a decade, and he’s tired of superheroes  and it won’t be any good.I am SO BITTER about this.

      • Apparently she made a cameo in “Man of Steel” as Wonder Woman. Somewhere in an alternate universe, my Underoos-wearing little girl self just sighed dreamily.

  • OrigamiRose

As soon as I scrolled to the picture of Cooper, I got excited.  Your reaction did not disappoint me 🙂

  • MilaXX

What a bunch of sad sacks. I like the middle bunch from Gloria Reuban to  Katie Aselton, with a side of Naomi Watts.  Everyone else needs to go home and try again.

  • I demand a re-evaluation of this: Nina Dobrev in Monique Lhuillier…it looks like old xmas candy wrappers. 😉

    • kimmeister

It very much made me think of the PR unconventional materials challenges, in the “muslin with crap glued to it” method.

      • Melvis Velour

        Bingo!  You just nailed it

  • “K-mart curtains” is right up there with “supercuts hair”

And what is wrong with Bradley Cooper? He needs a TEAM of gays. That jacket is so ill-fitting it hurts my eyes.

    • Nicholas

It’s a cry for help is what it is.

    • frederieke

I want to shave his head. I think a buzzcut would do him good.

  • ChiliP

WOW, Helen Hunt looks fabulous. I wish the side cutouts were a bit smaller, but they are still tastefully done- they don’t show side boob or side butt. That’s a win for me.

    • AnaRoW

She looks fabulous from the neck down. The hair is awful.

      • ankali

Her hair rarely looks great; it’s pretty fine and thin.

  • teensmom99

As to McConaughey, I give him a pass since I think he has a new baby so maybe he had no time to meet with a tailor.

    • OrigamiRose

I was also wondering if his drastic weight loss also could have played into the poor fit.  I mean, I know with his money there’s no reason to still not take care of that business; but maybe he was being pragmatic about not replacing his formal wear wardrobe for a temporary physical state.

      • ralish

That’s interesting; do these famous men own several kinds of formal wear, or are the tuxes on loan?

        • OrigamiRose

Hmmm hopefully the experts will chime in on that 🙂

Speaking strictly as an observer, I would think it would be less likely men would get (or seek) tux loaners, only because they can re-wear them without fear of being seen in the same thing twice.  Plus, McConaghey is kind of a hippy sort – think naked bongo playing in his back yard – who may not be inclined to get overly fussy about needing a new suit in his collection.  Not an excuse, mind you, just thinking that may be his frame of reference at work.

    • kimmeister

Did the new baby also send static electricity to his hair?

  • Karen Maslowski

Frankly, now I want to see Matthew McConaughey taking needle in hand.

  • kikisayshi

What was this post about again? All I saw was Henry Cavill. *swoon*

    • A. Men.

    • lovelyivy

He is the SOLE reason I will go see the Superman movie. Also the SOLE reason I saw The Immortals, which was dreadful (although it must be said- I came for Cavill and stayed for Luke Evans. Mercy).

  • I think Elle shopped at K-mart too, only she opted to purchase her curtains from the bath section.  I swear I had that dress in shower curtain form in my bathroom circa the early nineties.. uck.

  • Clea Duvall looks like she is wearing bike shorts underneath her dress.

    • kimmeister

I hate that style of ruched tiers that add rolls where they don’t actually exist.

      • ankali

I normally agree with you, but I think she looks absolutely gorgeous. Maybe because it’s just not the type of gown I’d expect Clea Duvall to wear — she’s getting a lot of mileage out of surprising me.

  • nannypoo

Jessica Chastain looks beautiful and she knows it. And I know it’s not nice to get all judgy about a very young celebrity, but Elle Fanning looks absolutely ridiculous, head to foot. Isn’t there someone who cares about her who can help her with this? Does she not have parents or handlers? Is she entirely on her own?

  • lrober03

I like that Melissa Leo’s boob tattoo is peeking out.

  • MissMariRose

Holy shit! What happened to Famke Janssen? I thought that was her grandmother.

  • dorothea_brooke

Sally Field looks good but so fragile. If they’d put jewelry on her she might have fallen over.

    • Kristin McNamara

It makes me smile though that she, being a woman of a certain age, is evidently comfortable enough in her own skin to show up to get her picture taken without any hose covering her legs. (Which she absolutely SHOULD feel comfortable enough to do.. all I’m saying is that most older women DON’T.) So that gives me a happy. And she does look great 🙂

  • UglyTalents

“You look very … flammable.” LOL!

  • minnye

Monique Lhuillier must have designed that purple dress as a prank. And Eva Longoria must have lost a bet. That’s one of the most unflattering shapes I’ve ever seen.

  • another_laura

What is it with the pink lace lately?  I think the stylists need an intervention.

  • Trisha26

The only gown/female look I like is Jessica Chastain – perfection. I’m all for edgy but Elle Fanning is wearing an appliquéd bath towel. Love John Hawkes – where is his nomination?

    • kimmeister

As sour as John’s facial expression is, his suit appears to fit him flawlessly!

    • Mary229

She is wearing a bath towel but i’m more likely to forgive her because she’s a kid.  She’ll learn for next time. 🙂

      • Northern_Light_27

I can forgive her a lot faster than I can the maker for slapping a Chanel label on a kitchen towel.

  • procrastinatrice

    Helen Hunt FTW.

  • Am I the only one getting a Georgia O’Keefe/vaginal/labia thing from Eva Longoria’s dress?

    • kimmeister

Absolutely not, that’s exactly what I saw!

    •  Ditto, I saw that as well.

  • Call me Bee

    A couple thoughts:
1st:  Femke Jensen!?   Gloria Ruben?!  Helen Hunt?!  Wow–haven’t seen these gals on the runway in forever!
2nd:  Apparently all the tailors in Hollywood have disappered.  I mean, how often can you tell the guys:  jacket is too tight, pants are too long.
3rd:  Emily Blunt looks good, as does Sally Field.

  • A pretty dress?  On Elle?  It looks like she was running for the phone right out of the shower & grabbed a bedspread or tablecloth from the laundry basket!  It’s HIDEOUS!

  • Annabelle Archer

Eva is serving up O’Keefe realness. And that’s not a good thing.

  • Is it just me or does Leslie Mann look like she’s wearing something from fat Betty Francis’ wardrobe?

  • annieanne

Sally needs a better bra and pantyhose.
A women reaches a certain age and bare legs just don’t cut it anymore. Sally has reached that age.

  • MsMajestyk

Whoa, Gloria Ruben has not aged.  Famke, what the hell with that Galliano?

    • ankali

I’ve been disliking recent collections from Dior, formerly my very favorite house. I thought maybe it was because Galliano was gone, but Famke Janssen has single-handedly disproven that theory.

  • Mary229

Amy Adams looked stunning but that’s not the best picture of her.  In other pictures, her skin and smile were so flawless it was breathtaking.  Helen Hunt looks amazing.  Naomi Watts is reminding me of how much I liked her.  Jessica Chastain is beautiful.  Henry Cavill is super handsome but I thought he looked kind of worn out at the awards.  Seen him look better.  Sally Field looks elegent and classic though I would have liked it if she wore a gown.

  • Imasewsure

Let’s call this whole reel, “Naomi Watts and the two incredibly pretty boys” and forget the rest…. Thank you Naomi, Henry and Ian… the rest go away – you either look awful or just eh

  • Henry Cavill is so hot, if he walked by my construction site, I’d grab my crotch and whistle.

  • lundibleu

Scrolling down, I reached Leslie Mann and read it as “Leslie Mann in Horror” … yeah, I think that summed it up nicely.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I want to know EXACTLY what Sally Field eats, what her exercise routine is, and what her skin care regimen is, because I can’t believe she looks like this in her mid 60s. Can I sign up for that, too?

    • Mary229

Yeah I agree. Sally is an inspiration.

  • Tatiana Luján

Fanning’s dress isn’t pretty, it’s a bedpread wrapped around her.

    Emily Bunt
is too blonde and her dress is too short.

    Famke Janssen’s dress
could be on the worst looks list this year.

    Jessica Chastain  looks gorgeous.

    I love Katie Aselton’s look.

    Melissa Leo’s dress looks
    too big for her.

  • butterflysunita

Sally Field, nicely done.  So much better than those two looks from the other day.

  • mznormann

Elle Fanning looks like she just got out of the shower and grabbed an extra-long bath towel…. Ugh.

  • MintaHallWriter

Leslie Mann…TLo, I have to differ with you. She doesn’t look flammable. She looks…chewable.  As in Duble Bubble Bubblegum chewable.

    Or maybe…Pepto Bismol.

  • Didn’t McConaughey used to have good hair?  And I’m sorry, bitches, but Amy Adams totally looks like she’s wearing Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

  • H3ff

All I can see with Sally Field’s look is Tammy Brown. Yikes.

It may be the total lack of a waist and her posture.

  • I see Henry Cavill is keeping the Superman hair. He’ll be tired of it by the time he’s done pimping Man of Steel.

  • LCTerrill

Eva’s wearing a purple vagina. Should probably get that looked at.

  • Frank Lithium

I’m impressed by how well everyone did overall, and Naomi Watts has struck gold twice in a row!

  • quiltrx

    A few scattered comments…

…I’m giving the win to Helen Hunt.  Classy looking (even with lace hip inserts!) and pretty.
…yes, we’ve seen that before, but never on Clea Duvall.  She looks pretty elegant.
…I love the pattern of Chris Tucker’s jacket–a shame about the rest.
…Eva Longoria’s dress looks like a huge bajingo.

And Henry Cavill…all I can do is sigh, you gorgeous thing!

  • myristica_fragrans

the front of eva’s dress looks like a vulva. how didn’t she notice that when she was looking in the mirror?

  • Leslie Mann needs so much help. So very much.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Gloria Ruben and Helen Hunt look great. John Hawkes was a delight as one of the sleazy pols in “Lincoln”. Whenever he was on screen I woke up.

  • Eva_baby

    There.  Fixed it for you.

    • pookiesmom

SO MUCH YES. I was like, “pretty dress? where?!”

  • PaulaBerman

McConaughey’s greasy headsuit is ruining that look, not the hem.

  • frannyprof

I don’t like Emily Blunt as a blonde; makes her look older & she’s so pretty as a brunette. Eva’s dress has a big ‘ol vagina on the front. Famke Janssen is tragic.

  • I saw these pics from US Weekly first and I am happy to say I almost guessed everything T&Lo were going to say.

  • LuisaNL

naomi watts and ian whatshisname for the win! who were the others again…? what a bunch of forgettable outfits!

  • Having seen Magic Mike, I now believe Matthew McConaughey should hit the red carpet in chaps.

  • Henry Cavill  *SWOON*

What is up with the Fanning obsession with Chanel? It so rarely works on either of them, washed out, precious and dull.  When Naomi Watts is in the mood and feels like it, she can knock it out of the park, can’t she?

  • SugarSnap108

Matthew McConaughey also needs to hem his hair.

  • alyce1213

What a crazy mixed bag, from the sublime to the ridiculous, overdone glitz to daytime.
My bests are the ladies in red: Helen Hunt, Jessica Chastain and Sally Field.
The very worst is Leslie Mann.  That dress makes my eyes hurt like her voice makes my ears hurt.

  • RocknRollmom

I think saying Famke’s mess comes from Kmart does a disservice to Kmart.  What a nightmare and itloks horrible on her.  And I think I found the first Tadashi dress I hate.  Whoever that Clea person is, that dress is awful.  I am not sure who would look good in having one’s torso bound in numerous places making rolls where none actually exist.  And I don’t want to know she has a sideways tattoo.  Looks cheap—both her and the gown.

  • John Krasinski just needs a “Long” in that jacket.  It looks tight because the button and the pockets are too high.

  • unbornfawn

Henry Cavill looks great. He gets props in my book for showing up with his hair combed and clean shaven! Very refreshing.

  • boweryboy

I wish I was a liar about this, but for Christmas my partner’s sister-in-law gave us an embroidered tablecloth similar to Elle’s dress.  It had the added bonus attraction of foot long fringe along the edge.  We’re mid-century modern kind of guys so it isn’t our taste at all.

Also, is it me or is Elle becoming more and more a fashion victim as the days go by?

    • alyce1213

It’s not you. Each red carpet appearance is worse than the one before. Poor girl.

  • nina’s skirt is so stiff it looks like it rings when she walks.

  • p.s.  also?  i think famke (poor famke) qualifies as an unmitigated fashion disaster in these pics.

  • rjeujune

I think Henry Cavill looks like a bit of a douche with curly hair. He’s much better-looking with close-cropped hair. As for Matthew McConaughey, I loathe, loathe, loathe that man. He looks… not clean, and I’m being kind.

  • JaneDC

I dunno about Naomi Watts’s dress.  It makes me want to go over and hike it up.

  • Pennymac

Meh. Move along; nothing to see here. No cracktastic awfulness or bowing down fabulosity. Color me disappointed!

  • Oh, sweet Johnny Hawkes. I’ll miss that face on Oscar night….

  • SRQkitten

Is Emily Blunt in the running for a Joan Crawford biopic? Cause she’s got that look going pretty fierce (although its aging her dreadfully as well as TLo noted).

Naomi Watts FTW ladies, Ian and Henry in a tie FTW guys.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Eva Longoria looks chubby and she of course is bone thin.  So the dress, it must be burnt.  That is all.

  • guest2visits

Yay for Sally Fields and Helen Hunt for both looking wonderful and finding something that works so well.
Actually lots of pretty and handsome in this post…

  • John Hawkes looks hot. His suit fits– take note, most other gentlemen!

  • librarygrrl64

I wish Amy Adams would go back to a more vibrant red hair color. I feel like the reddish blonde just washes her out, especially because she seems to favor pale colors and neutrals in her clothing choices. Or maybe it’s the makeup lately.

  • libraangel

I cannot believe how handsome Henry is – I don’t know what to do with myself!
    And others? Mostly horrendous.
