Cover Girl: Drew Barrymore for Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on January 31, 2013

Miss Drew’s been away from the spotlight in order to gestate a human, but she’s back, looking fresh and (no doubt due to Photoshop) well-rested in her new role of mommy.

Drew Barrymore covers the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Daniel Jackson.

“When my daughter was born, I thought to myself, ‘How do I go past infinity with my efforts and care?’ I asked my mother-in-law questions. I psycho-stalked all of the nurses with so many questions. I asked every single question. I’m a real stay-at-home mom. I’m really hands-on. Everything else became secondary.”

“For a solid six weeks, I was hiding like the Unabomber. Because I live my life in the public eye, and I didn’t want that for her [daughter] Unless I move into a bunker underground, I don’t have a choice in this matter. It was something that took me weeks to cope with.”

“How do I go past infinity with my efforts and care?” Haven’t we all asked that question, in perhaps a slightly less space-cadet manner, using words that flow more naturally into each other? We look forward to more Drew-osophy, like “Why are people so full of not-nice when they could have purposefulness and bliss times a thousand?” and “When will my baby live in a world so totally beyond a big bowl of love and peace?”

Aw, we joke because we love Miss Drew. She looks cute here – and she can add herself to the long list of ladystars who lined up to wear one of the checked dresses from the LV spring line.

God I love those checked prints!! So why do ladystars make such a giant deal about parenthood? Self-absorbed much? Yes my children are lovely and life changing but I didn’t redefine LOVE or PURPOSE just because they arrived…. geezzzz

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

Yeah, I want to give her a pass because she’s cute and been through a lot, but I think what she means by “hands on” is that she was almost completely unhinged because she didn’t know what she was doing as a new mom. And we’ve all been through that. And it doesn’t take so many words to say that.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

That’s the thing – she’s been through a lot, her mother did not, apparently, do the greatest job on her so she wants to be the best mother she can and doesn’t know how. Pretty sweet, I think.

If she can keep this photoshopper around she can be cast as Julianne Moore’s daughter in something.

          • MRC210

Yes about her mother — interesting that she mentions asking her MIL for advice but not her mom.

            • Monica Valbuena

That’s PROBABLY because she had an absent mother that encouraged her to do cocaine at age 12… http://www.trutv.com/dumb_as_a_blog/gallery/dumbest-parents-of-celebrities.html?curPhoto=2

            • alyce1213

She’s had a spotty relationship with Jaid, her mother, who’s a bit of a mess.  I read that when Drew got married, she spoke to her mother about attending her wedding and ‘they’ decided it would be best if she didn’t.  Sad, but true.  Well, maybe she’s got a great MIL.

      • Funkykatt

I redefined love with a newborn as willing to stay up night after night glued to sofa in dire need of another shower and caring less about me and much more about them.

        • libraangel

I agree, but I still wonder if Drew has a nanny? Bet so.

          • PeaceBang

            Yea, she does.

      • Airkisses

I don’t have children, but I think it’s part of the cultural narrative for women (still). I think for celebrities, especially, it gets emphasized as they are in the public eye. Can anybody remember any fatherhood interviews?

        • MilaXX

I remember exacrly one; Collin Farrel & that was in response to what made him clean up his bad boy image.

        • susan6

           Elton John?

        • AnaRoW

They happen but not nearly as often.  Most recently it was Hugh Grant.  I’ve also seen Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fatherhood interviews.

      • Sobaika

I agree, but I think if they said anything less readers wouldn’t be kind either. Apparently in Hollywood you are either Gaia, Mother of the Earth itself or Heartless Beast Woman.

      • Kimmu

Didn’t you get the memo that women today when they have a child are required to give up all independent thought or personal agency and become nothing more than 1.) the Baby Incubator for 9-10 months and then 2.) Selfless Care Giver Who is Less Than a Person (Compared to The Father and The Child)?

        • VictoriaDiNardo

There was an article in the NY Times today about a former lawyer who became a jewelry designer, now has a company making bracelets from turned-in guns to benefit charity.  Headline: Connecticut Mother Makes Bangles from Recycled Guns.
          Gggrrrr……

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Then you’re lucky because some people have no concept of life or love before they have children.  And having a child IS a big deal.  It’s an enormous responsibility and if you’ve never really been around children, having your own can be very daunting.  Some women (not just celebrities) spend their lives focused on themselves and nothing else.  It’s all about them til they pop out a kid and then they realize the focal point of their universe no longer revolves around what makes them happy, but what is good for their child.  Plus, she has the baggage of having had a shitty mother, I’m sure she’s terrified of fucking up her kid and wants to spare her whatever unhappiness she experienced growing up.

As for the general hilarity of her wording, I’d like to think this is a result of pregnancy brain and not her inability to formulate intelligible sentences.

        • Airkisses

           You are brilliant.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

Love LV dresses, but this is going to get boring any time soon, also, everybody knows her neck is not like that, who are they trying to cheat?

    • BuffaloBarbara

I love Drew-osophy.  She’s a space cadet, but totally fun.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Kate Hudson hosted SNL a few years back when Will Ferrell was still on the show.  They did a spoof of The Actors Studio with Ferrell as James Lipton and Kate Hudson as Drew Barrymore — HYSTERICAL!!!

    • Sobaika

If I were rich and famous, you better believe I’d have those checkered skirts in every color.

      • lovelyivy

I am not too proud to admit that ever since I saw the pictures I’ve had one eye out when I go shopping for something similar to this look that is compatible with my clothes budget. So far, no dice.

      • tereliz

It’s the checkered pointy-toed flats I’m lusting after.

        • tinyredlocks

OMG! Me, too! I’d give someone a beatdown for those shoes.

      • Alyssa

I would to! If only I were rich…

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

If you have trouble recognizing the celebrity in the picture without looking at her (or his) name, that’s a Photoshop fail.

      • Glammie

Yep.  That’s not Drew’s jaw and, I love her, but she does not have a swan-like neck.  They’ve actually kind of distorted the shape of her face.

        • Kthrow

Looks like Katie Holmes at quick glance

        • jack mackenna

I’m glad I’m not the only one who was thinking “what’s up with her neck??”

      • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

Oh, Photoshop? Is that what happened to Anne Hathaway on that awful Vogue cover?  where she looked like a stroke victim?

    • shnaggi

Always exuberant she looks and sounds happy and 6 weeks after the arrival of the blessed chosen one. Drew sounds like any first timer…she needs other yummy mummy’s who are equally interested in her revelations….probably more suitable for Good Housekeeping.

      • libraangel

I might have been a yummy mummy when my son was born, but not an airy-fairy space cadet! (like Drew)

        • shnaggi

You say space cadet like it’s a bad thing – she is playful with exaggeration and will probably be the kind of mother that will nurture using creative dance expression and then free spirit her little human into adulthood with the same sense of humor she has used in this article…..“When will my baby live in a world so totally beyond a big bowl of love and peace?” C’mon now you know she’s messing with us right? Ps She knows we know she’s been Photo shopped too – crazy huh.

    • Spicytomato1

I find Drew charming and quirkily appealing but she looks a bit too polished here to be believed. Even the dress seems to be chosen to complement the typography and design of the cover more than anything else.

It would have been nice to see a full body shot to get a better sense of the real Drew.

    • mjude

i have always loved her.  love thoses louis v checkered dresses.

    • MoHub

Those Louis Vuitton checkerboards are getting a lot of mileage.

And Drew looks so much better when she eschews the opaque dark red lipstick.

    • MilaXX

She’s also back in the public eye shilling her cosmectic line. I’ll admit, I want to try her mascara.

      • MoHub

Yep. Saw her on Ellen. She was wearing a dark red lipstick with visible lipliner and very soft eye makeup. Every time she talked, I had visions of the opening titles of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

        • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Coincidentally, Science Fiction Double Feature could probably describe the photoshop job on this cover.

    • msdamselfly

Why do I not like her?

      • Alyssa

I don’t either…she’s always been on my irrational hate list.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

When I have to look twice to realize which highly recognizable actress I’m looking at, you know they’ve overdone the photoshop.

    • decormaven

Holy sculpted cheekbones! Childbirth must be the new facial. Seriously, I am happy for her, and it’s great to see another glimpse of the LV line.

      • alyce1213

        Photoshop is the new facial.

    • Kathy_Marlow

Every time I see her, I think to myself that the Barrymore’s were blessed with superior bone structure.  Amazing faces.

    • lexilexi

Call me out-of-touch, but I just don’t see the beauty in walking around with a huge checkerboard on your body.  I am surprised so many stars do!

    • Candigirl1968

I’d love to see Paltrow’s Goop insufferable posts as reinterpreted in Drewspeak.

Side note – does Drew’s neck look oddly photo-shopped to anyone else?

    • TropiCarla

Hmm … I’ve been a first time mother for roughly a month less than she has and I am not spouting such nonsense. People ask me ALL THE TIME how I’m doing. I have 2 standard replies:
      1. “I’d rather not say.”
      2. “I’m having a little trouble sticking the dismount.”

Maybe I need to call Drew and ask for some advice … or at least some support staff on loan.

      • http://twitter.com/clearlygifted Amy

Oh, the early weeks are SO much harder than I was ever led to believe, and I promised myself that I would remember how hard it was in order to be more supportive/sympathetic to new moms, because all I heard from other people during that time was variations of, “Isn’t it wonderful? Aren’t you just so happy?”

Sure I was, but I mostly remember being terrified all the time. I felt like I had no business having this tiny creature entrusted to me and was certain that something bad would happen, and without going into too much boring detail, the sleeplessness, feeding problems, and hormones did not help.

Anyway, I’m just writing this to say that, even though I don’t know precisely what you’re going through, I’m willing to bet that it’s perfectly normal, and it WILL get better.

Also, if you plan on having any more, the second baby is way less terrifying.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/3DRRZR36XZSTQSLON4LXERKRHA Stephanie

Agreed.  The first two weeks are absolutely brutal.  People are all, “Just sleep when the baby sleeps.”  If you do that you will never eat, poop or shower.

To stay on topic:  Love the dress.  Love her.  Hate photoshop.

      • libraangel

Exactly: she probably has two, or three nannies!

      • julnyes

Well this is the way Drew talks about everything

She is a bit Hippy-dippy to begin with so her motherhood speak is par for the course.

    • Kirsten Kirsten

Love the caption “Get great hair + perfect skin”
      … Yeah, with photoshop.
      Also, her neck is ridiculous.

      • j_anson

        Yes, this.

    • VeryClaire

I thought it was Katie Holmes. They’ve airbrushed the hell out of her!

    • libraangel

Photoshopped? I guess so, because she doesn’t even have any lines near her nose, and even cute 16 year old girls have these. And her hip-speak is beyond bizarre!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

That’s not even her chin! But what the hey, those LV dresses are at least getting the attention they deserve!

    • lamamu

I’m sick of lady stars defining themselves by the state of their vaginas. Is it 1954?

      ….Anyway, she looks great. Sigh.

    • Zippypie

Both the LV checkerboard dresses (which are fun but not THAT great) and Photoshop need to be retired.

      Drew makes me laugh.

    • Call me Bee

Very pretty in checks.  Yeah–I remember spouting platitudes about motherhood and shit…only while pregnant.  Once that little alien came into our lives, I was all, “When in the heck does school start?”  I jest, but there really was some of that.  I’m happy to say my girls grew up to be fairly well-adjusted contributing members of human society in spite of our mistakes as new parents.

I still chuckle when I hear new moms talking about “infinity of caring…”

      • PaulaBerman

I’m kind of betting that she has domestic help. Babies’ craziness is past infinity when you are the only one who is waking up with them in the middle of the night.

    • Belle239

I always thought she’d be a ton of fun to have as a friend.  She just makes me smile.  Would have enjoyed the cover if it had actually looked like the Drew I was expecting to see!

Those pointy-toed checked shoes look like they could kill somebody with that point.

    • Eileen Mannion

Her neck has been that slender NEVER!

    • unbornfawn

      Too photoshopped.

    • Anniebet

She may have gestated a human, as TLo says, but by golly, she doesn’t look quite human herself in that photo. Somewhere along the way she’s lost the essence of what made her so fresh and quirky.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love Drew! She looks pretty, but I wish that we could actually see the dress.

    • xmixiex

      she looks beauuuutiful

      • libraangel

Of course: so would we if we were airbrushed and photoshopped!

    • Claudia Fernandes

It seems that we will shout «of course» whenever we see a star in Louis Vuitton…Drew Barrymore looks gourgeous

      • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

I, too, love the LV line but am amazed at how much I’m seeing it.  **of course** indeed!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

LV hit the jackpot with that line. She looks fantastic.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Seems she had plenty of time in her own head in the bunker with no one else to speak english to.

    • guest2visits

I do like these dresses; but I prefer the softer toned checks.   Drew looks great on this cover in the b/w.

    • Jenna621

Her neck looks ridiculously thin…that picture was Photoshopped to death.

    • ccm800

Whooo! Someone is fresh from Spa Adobe!
