Claire Danes in Atelier Versace

Posted on January 14, 2013

Claire wisely brought her own wind machine with her:

Claire Danes attends the 2013 Golden Globe Awards in an Atelier Versace gown.

And wouldn’t you, if you had had her killer head of hair?

We’re more than over the standard red gown, but we have to give the lady some props. She looked amazingly sexy in this getup. Especially when you consider she just dropped a baby like 15 minutes before arriving. The shape is gorgeously flattering, the color looks great on her, and she can really rock a face full of makeup. Nicely done.

  • i loved the look, but thought her girls might have used some more support.

    • mshesterp

Really?  She’s pretty small chested–I was thinking we small chested ladies didn’t really need much support–it’s one of the perks, so to speak.

      • FrayedMachine

I’d have to agree. There’s nothing wrong with having cleavage that also looks -natural- and not like they’re inflated with helium. this is one of those rare times where I don’t have any major complaint about the look.

      • call_me_schmeg

yeah, as a fellow SCL, support isn’t a huge issue. proper nip coverage is key. i think people are more accustomed to seeing SCL use undergarments to give an illusion of boobage where this isn’t any. so when someone like claire rocks a look that isn’t about that illusion, it throws everybody off. (this is coming from a chick who wears a padded bra nearly every day, so take it for what it’s worth.)

      • Yeah, I’m not getting what there is to complain about here, unless you’re offended that she’s not wearing a bra. It’s not like she even looks droopy.

        • Dagney

Agree agree!   I love this look.  She looks sexy as all get out, and it’s confident, WOMAN, hell yeah, sexy.

      • Karen Maslowski

She has what we used to refer to as an “athletic” build. It’s natural.

No one would have criticized the similarly built Katherine Hepburn for not wearing a garment with “support”.

        • Katherine Hepburn never had kids and never would have worn a gown without a bra if it didn’t have a built-in foundation.

    • Natalie Bryan

If my breastfeeding boobs looked that good, I wouldn’t be wearing a bra either! She joked with Seacrest that she was worried about leaking, though. 🙂

    • patticake1601

She is so small breasted that she doesn’t need a bra, they don’t even droop. I’d kill for her boobs!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I felt the eye makeup was a little heavy, but when you just squeezed out a human I’m inclined to let things like that slide.

    • 3boysful

I agree that the Bardot eye rims were not only heavy, but kinda awful.  But if that’s her only post-partum flaw, a big PASS from me.

  • MarinaCat

PERFECT dress for a post-baby event.    Not that she seems to need anything to hide behind.   She looks darn sexy, which is probably a look she wanted after wearing pregnancy schmatas.

  • whitebord material

  • Love the dress; the eye makeup is too much.

    • mshesterp

Yep, I thought the whole look was fab, but the raccoon eyes weren’t doing it for me.  Not too many women can pull that off, and I don’t think she’s one of them.

My only quibble outside of that–is she wearing red shoes?  I don’t understand red shoes with a red dress…I’m seeing it a lot, and they never match.  A metallic, please!

Other than that, she looks terrific.  And her husband is adorable.

  • Veronica Russek

Stunning. I can’t believe she gave birth such a short time ago!

    • Kristin McNamara

I know. What a bitch, right?

  • savicevic

Too much eye makeup, but she looks great.

  • lexilexi

Four wins in four nominations – phenomenal.  I think she looked amazing – “all things considered”.

  • Introspective

baby or not, bitch BROUGHT it. that is all.

  • Matchy shoes, but when you’ve got arm-candy like that, who cares about the other accessories?

  • Kristi Mitchell

I’m sorry but I thought her make up was atrocious last night!  It looked like someone had punched her in both her eyes.  Her dress was gorgeous, and she looks amazing for just having had a baby, but her make up artist should have been flogged.

  • alyce1213

This was, by far, my least favorite of the red dresses on the RC last night.  Totally generic halter top, unsupported loose boobs, very unflattering fit through the waist, and the color: too-bright red.  I didn’t care for her eye makeup either.

    • Valdri8

totally agree. it looks like she has her mother’s dress on.

  • lehen

meh.  i didn’t love this at all.  then again, i’m just not really a fan of a plunging halter. it just looks dated to me.

  • The dress doesn´t flatter her that well!!

  • E. D.

Like everything but the eye makeup – looks like she hired Jennifer Lawrence’s MA.

  • Fyolette

my top5! That’s how you render a classic red gown. There’s nothing particularly earth-shattering, but she looks comfortable, sexy, and she sure as hell knows it. Also, Hugh on her hand makes for a great accessory (sorry, Hugh.)

  • peacockprincess

Am I the only one that thought she looked too thin?

    •  She is probably on the leaner side since she is naturally thin and is now breastfeeding.  That’s also likely why she didn’t want anything binding, as that can decrease milk production.

  • MarissaLG

She looks really nice, but I don’t know- it’s a little too vampy for my taste. I always like when she keeps it classy and sweet.

  • She looks like one of the Olson twins with that eye makeup.

  • She was one of my favorites. Her dress wasn’t anything mind-blowing but she rocked the shit out of it.

  • Love the gown, well thought out and chic. The makeup looks a little cray.

  • UglyTalents

She looks gorgeous, and that husband looks fantastic on her!

  • Puck Thornton

Sexy bed hair, sexy dress. Hate the shoes and eye makeup.

  • jenno1013

Brilliant design for camouflaging a 4-week-postpartum poochy tummy.  Like how it shows off her waist/hips differential — I’m used to her appearing much more straight-up-and-down, but here she’s got a booty.

But I can’t with all that under-eye eyeliner.  I hate it on her, and on JLaw.  Too many memories of circa-1985 middle-school queen bees.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I read in an interview she did after the awards that she choose the Versace for it’s superior “camouflaging” and that there was “some serious Spanx going on under there” — I really like Claire Danes!

  • Violina23

Life is not fair that people can look so good so soon after giving birth. She looks amazing

  • OrigamiRose

I’m normally not a fan of the harsh eyeliner, mostly because too often it fails; but in this case, I really thought she worked it well in conjunction with everything else, especially that glorious bed head.

  • gabbilevy

That first photo is incredible. Keep on kicking ass, Miss Carrie.

  • MilaXX

I thought she looked great, but in some shots I liked the makeup and in others the smokey eye seemed a bit much.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I actually loved this dress – there was something about the fabric that gave the red a gorgeous depth.  The shape flatters her slightly unusual body shape.  I liked her eye makeup as well.  Her hair is surprising given how thin and stringy it is in Homeland (which I spent the weekend watching – Showtime was free!)

  • shelley514

She looked like Malibu Barbie Golden Globes edition!  Reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar (or was it Golden Globes) look from just 2 years ago.  So while I think she looks great, it’s very “been there, done that” and nothing new.  Also, during her interview with Ryan Seacrest, you could see a gap in the upper back area of the dress.  Maybe it was an intentional gap as they didn’t want the dress to be skin tight.  It was distracting though.

    • Lisa_Cop

I thought Seacrest was rude, asking if she had other dress options or only this one.

  • kimmeister

It’s a great dress, but I feel like the draping in the front just serves to emphasize how long waisted she is.  Maybe she loves that about herself, I don’t know, but as a fellow long-waisted gal I am always trying to de-emphasize it.

However, when I saw her go onstage my immediate reaction was, “Wow, she just had a baby and she looks amazing!”

  • Shannon 1

The sexy JBF hair must be pre-natal vitamins or extensions because her hair is always so thin and scraggly on Homeland.

    • Lisa_Cop

I think it’s extensions. Certain pieces of hair on the top of her head have dark roots while other pieces don’t.

  • Susan Sontag

I don’t think she *can* be unsupported.  There are just some physiological issues that go on that soon postpartum.  She has to have some coverage there just for the absorption issues.

    • Stephanie Flinchbaugh

She mentioned on E! that she was really hoping she didn’t leak over the course of the night.  So, nursing pads are a definite yes.

    • MRC210

I know — I was thinking “leakage”.  But she was wearing underpinnings; she said backstage that she was wearing “some serious Spanx” and that she was so strapped into the dress that she’d have to take it all off to go to the bathroom.    I love the color of the dress but the black eyeliner is too much.

  • Valdri8

Sorry, That shape makes her look far too long-waisted and saggy-boobed

  • GorgeousThings

And didn’t she just have a baby, like, two weeks ago?
Bitch. Good for her. Her husband is a cutie too.

  • Makeup: C-; Dress: A+

  • Janet B

Claire looks fabulous, she should always have a wind machine with her.

  • e jerry powell

Was Claire even there?  All I can see is Hugh Dancy.

  • I don’t agree with you guys about the makeup. Kind of looks like she has crazy eyes to me.

    • e jerry powell

Oh, no, darling.  You want to see crazy eyes? Look at Michelle Bachmann.  These aren’t even in the same league.

I concede that the eyeliner is a little much, but Bachmann wishes she had eyes that looked this sane.

  • Tatiana Luján

I’ve never found that shade of blonde flattering on her. I think her skin looked way prettier when she was brunette.

  • EEKstl

Agreed, she always does The Globes well.  I recall that hot pink Calvin Klein a few years ago that I thought was absolutely divine.

  • VeryClaire

She looks beautiful but to me she’s one of those people who looked so much better as a brunette. The blond is harsh and washes her out. A warm soft brown would look so good on her. (and less eye make up!)

  • Qitkat

Very lovely. I’d rather not see her going the route of SJP eyeliner though.

  • Zippypie

Love the dress and hair.  The only complaint are the raccoon eyes.  Do not like the fully lined eyes at all.  Too heavy.

  • peachy

it’s an ‘ick’ in my book. boring red dress. raccoon eyes. drag a brush through that hair every couple of days honey. matchymatchy red satin shoes. no jewels? glam that shit up, girl, it’s awards season! a poor man’s marykate olsen.

  • KatieKissinger

I can’t get over her hair- she looks fantastic!  I don’t think it’s an issue that she skipped the bra, she’s small on top so she doesn’t need a ton of support anyway.  Head to to toe fabulous!

  • ThaliaMenninger

She AND the adorable husband looked great.

  • poggi

She should also get extra credit for not holding the slit open or high-kicking her leg out of it.

  • CassandraMortmain

Very standard-issue dress but it looks fantastic on her.  The shoes are awful and the eye make-up is ridiculous.  In the next-to-last pic she’s giving some serious Carrie Mathison crazy-eye.

I’m so sorry she won – she was amazing in the first season of Homeland and totally deserved every award (as did Damien Lewis).  But Homeland was a trainwreck this season and her performance was really sub-par.  It was all full-on, eye-bugging crazy all the time.  There was no nuance at all to her performance.  I really hope she doesn’t win the Emmy but she probably will.

  • Her hair deserves its own reward.

  • She looks great, but I felt that the makeup was overdone. I only saw for her briefly when Homeland won, but she looked like she had two black eyes on stage. It’s better out in the natural light, but still a slight misstep in an otherwise lovely look.

  • Judy_J

I think she went a shade too smoky with the eye makeup, but otherwise, flawless.

  • meebs

    I hate this dress.

  • Noelle Haland

I like the dress and her hair, but those raccoon eyes are dreadful.

  • RocknRollmom

Both daughter and I immediately commented on how gorgeous she looked!  Best I think I have ever seen her.

  • Wasn’t as in love with her hair as you guys but yes, the dress was really amazing on her.

  • Call me Bee

Yeah–didn’t she have a baby, like, yesterday?  Totally envious of her shape, as I still have my baby weight and my youngest is now 33 years old…  Anyway–she looked great and so animated.  Love her.

    • janierainie

LOL!  I can so relate! I saw an interview and her baby is 1 month old. 1 MONTH!

  • I thought she looked a mess. She usually is very polished on the red carpet. The dress was just okay. Her hair looks a mess. Her makeup job looks like she just spent the last night crying her eyes out. She looks a bit dishovled in a very unflattering way IMO. Also, during her speech last night she sounded a tad sloshed. I mean, sure everyone was, but she didn’t hide it well at all. All around I was not impressed.

  • I thought the eyes were just a tad too raccoon-y.  And I do have a head of hair myownself but no wind machine to follow me around.  Just the real wind.

    •  She’s mastered the art of giving herself “smokey eye” just a tad under “crazy eye,” so we’ll be clear she’s promoting Homeland no matter what.

  • She looks amazing. Perfect dress, hair and make-up.

  • I think she looks great, but her eye makeup is a little too severe for me. Otherwise, pretty dress, and gorgeous color.

  • Trisha26

Don’t like the eyeliner – too much. Otherwise fine.

  • unbornfawn

    Hate the eye make-up.

  • librarygrrl64

She looks hot, and they’re both SMILING!!!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The dress is rather blase, but she’s in post-baby paradise and her happiness radiates out of her. Well done.

  • If I had her head of hair, I’d get my roots done.

Otherwise, am ok with the look, not sure how I feel about the eye makeup though.

  • How did she not get a WERQ for this? She looked killah!

  • ccm800

She looks like she just rolled out of her honeymoon  limo if ya know what  I mean. Smoking!

  • Her husband accessory goes great with her dress too.

  • sunnycalif

they couldn’t clear the stage for her photo?  Tacky.

  • girliecue

She looks fabulous from head to toe. Normally, her facial expressions scare me but here she looks beautiful and happy.

  • But is she allergic to jewelry?

  • Frank Lithium

  • Damien W

I think she can’t help the heavy eye makeup at this point — it covers the side effects (darkened lids) of that eyelash drug she takes and promotes.

The hair is killer. Very late 70s Goldie.

  • formerlyAnon

    This is amazing.

  • Melissa Brogan

I can only catch a glimpse of them, but I’m pretty sure I hate her shoes – and her eye makeup. Still, she looks pretty fantastic and that’s before I grade her on the curve of being postpartum.

  • Don Hackett

and the wind machine magically works only for her, the hair on everyone else stands shock still.

love the dress, not buying the 360 degree black eyeliner.  did anyone else notice how she turned into carrie for a minute there when she took the microphone.  crazy eyes and quirky shoulders!

  • Her hair isn’t quite the right color, somehow?
