Carly Rae Jepsen in Sachin + Babi

Posted on January 03, 2013

It’s like Carly Rae had two good options for stage outfits and couldn’t decide which one to wear.

Carly Rae Jepsen performs at the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2013” in Times Square in New York City in Sachin + Babi.

Sachin + Babi Spring 2013 Collection

The top with the little gloves? Very faux-rocker chick chic. The skirt? Sweeping and dramatic, with a little bit of glamour. Put them together? Thud. She doesn’t look awful or anything, but the pieces don’t seem to go together that well and the skirt comes up too high on her waist for her to be wearing what’s essentially a half-top. Proportionally, it looks odd.

But that really is a great skirt for stage wear.

  • Go with me on this…if she had a different hair color it would be MUCH better. Discuss

    • Sobaika

Different hair altogether. Hers is way too heavy for her face.

    • Allyson Wells

It’s hard to picture her with a different hair color, but I think the dark suits her. I don’t love the cut though… the bangs are a little much.

  • I like the skirt but t’s just not rock and roll.

    • To be fair, Carly doesn’t sing rock’n’roll.

  • BuckeyeLou

Carly said she was Freezing and she had long johns on under the skirt!

    •  That is exactly what I was thinking! She was originally going to wear a leather miniskirt and thought “fuck it, where are my thermals?”

      • MilaXX

Can’t say I blame her. This cold is no joke. I am currently wearing a coat that looks like I skinned fozzy bear and I give not one damn.

        • butterflysunita

I’ve been wearing a down coat that makes me look like a blimp and I’m still cold!

    • Sobaika

Really?? Haha! In that case I say ‘screw it’ and wear whatever allows you onstage in long johns.

    • Louise Bryan

So why have an exposed midriff.  It was bi… very cold on NYE.  Maybe she should’ve rocked that buffalo plaid coat of Anne Hathaway’s.

  • mmgk

And her backup dancers are dressed like Britney and Popeye, respectively.

    •  And probably FREEZING

  • Alessia M

oooo. That is a WEIRD part of your ribcage to show off. It makes her torso look really short and wide. Why would you draw attention to the widest part of your ribcage? If the top was a little longer and the skirt was a little lower, this would be much better.

  • Skirt looks amazing on the model, on CRJ, not so much, also, I think I prefer it in the orange.

  • EEKstl

That skirt is one half of a fabulous gown, but as it is…not so much.  Also prefer the orange to the red, or is it still orange and it’s just the lights?

  • laurenoodle

    Her bangs perturb me

  • Judy_J

Those bitter kittens of a certain age might agree with me when I say that in the third from the last photo, she looks just like Barbi Benton.

    • Mismarker

That is uncanny.  I spent many a Friday night as a child watching The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.  Barbi Benton was a frequent guest star on both!

  • Flatten that skirt out and I think you could play “Auld Lang Syne” on one of those old-fashioned music boxes.

  • MilaXX

Great skirt, if she’d lose the gloves, I’d give her a pass on the top.

    • kschwarting

Those gloves are pure Madonna circa 1985.

      • those gloves are also Madonna circa 2012. She has to disguise the only part of her that cannot be addressed by “refreshment” (to use TLo’s term) or “dental work” (to use Kathy Griffin’s term)…. 😉

  • bertkeeter

Let the black fingerless glove crazy die! Hope she sounds better than she looks!

  • teensmom99

Would love to see the skirt with a version of the  model’s sweater.

  • crash1212

Love that skirt. I’m gonna give her a pass on this as I don’t hate the top with the skirt, but the gloves are starting to make me a little annoyed. I love the eyes, but the BANGS are killin’ me. Guess it’s a 50/50 sort of deal for me.

  • Julie Parr

I think it would work if she were just taller.

  • E. D.

Lose the gloves and put the hair in a low ponytail and it would be a huge improvement.

  • At least her skirt isn’t see-through.

  • Lilithcat

    That skirt is fabulous.

  • Trisha26

I don’t mind the look as a whole, but the bare midriff? In New York on 1/31? When it’s 20 or whatever?

  • formerlyAnon

If she’d had some color above the waist – or even if her hair hadn’t blended into the top, woulda been better.

  • butterflysunita

I agree that it’s weird, but somehow it works.  Now those poor backup dancers on the other hand–wearing ugly outfits and also freezing!

  • Who?

    • jonnyf8

highlight her name, right-click, search with google — oh yeah, she has like the #1 song of the year and even though its annoying its easy enough to keep up with pop culture.  Sadly we haven’t heard the last of her.

  • SewingSiren

I didn’t notice the gloves, but the skirt is great.

  • quiltrx

    The skirt is magical.

  • crackineggs

I’m looking at these pictures and that DAMN SONG starts playing in my head.

  • ccm800

Because a midriff baring shirt in the middle of winter in the middle of NYC atnight is a prefect idea.

  • Allyson Wells

She looked miserably cold the entire night! If you’re going to be outside all night in January in NYC, you need a coat, or at the very least non-sheer sleeves!

That skirt is GORGEOUS!!  Hate the crop top though, if it came down a few more inches to meet the skirt, it would have been a much better overall look.  But that skirt is GORGEOUS!  *did I already say that?*

  • bluefish

    Hate that skirt.

  • snarkykitten

  • I love the colors on her; she looked festive, retaining some holiday spirit for New Years (and to talk to Ryan Seacrest, which can’t be easy!).

  • Hey! Sailors in town!

  • This girl needs a makeover stat.

  • sweetsadness

The model wears it superbly but, I suppose that’s her job.
