Baby WERQ: Kiernan Shipka

Posted on January 25, 2013

This is perfection:

‘Mad Men’ star Kiernan Shipka attends the ELLE’s Women in Television Celebration in West Hollywood, California in a pink dress paired with Rupert Sanderson heels.

You WERQ that sophisticated princess shit, Sally Draper!

Once again, we must pay tribute to the Mad Men casting director, because the older she gets, the more she looks like a mashup of January Jones and Jon Hamm.

    • Sobaika

Cute! She looks very pretty and fashionable and also her age. Sometime’s that can be hard to manage.

      • JosephLamour

        LOL Fanning, Elle. Agreed though.

    • SRQkitten

I saw Ms. Sally in that outfit elsewhere on the web and thought “that HAS to be a WERQ!” This young ‘un could give styling tips to her older acting peers, she really seems to have a great eye for appropriate (no small thing!) dress for events that really WERQ!

    • gabbilevy

Kiernan Shipka, you’re doing it right.

    • f_yeah_marie

Whether she came by her taste in fashion naturally or learned a few lessons from the show’s stylist, I’m glad that there’s one young starlet who knows how to dress.

    • Kiltdntiltd

And bless her make up person a thousand fold for balancing the need for make up on a step and repeat, and the need for her to look like a fresh faced young woman, not a junior hooker.

      • ChiliP

She should lend her makeup person to Elle Fanning. Kiernan is walking proof that you can look young, fresh, and pretty, but still camera-ready. I don’t want to see any of these baby starlets slathered in makeup, and Kiernan’s people seem to have discovered that fine line between presentable and painted.

        • Dot

I think a lot of EF’s makeup woes stem from that yellow, bleached out color she seems to insist on dying her hair. Her hair and skintone always seem so monochromatic to me, which I think causes her to look so washed out.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I understand that EF is at an age when she’s experimenting with different looks, such as her hair color, but she could look so much better with a shade of blonde that complements her coloring.

      • Pennymac

And her stylist for putting her in an absolutely perfect, dressy, and appropriate dress. LOVE!

        • Kiltdntiltd

Because of her coloring, as well as her age, that pink is ideal for her.

      • Katie Wolf

Shipka is clearly hording a commodity in seemingly short supply: poise. For that, she gets full-WERQs from me, not baby-sized!
/Totally ok with the fact that my role model is 13-years-old.

        • Kiltdntiltd

It is indeed a rare and sometime thing, these days. There’s every reason to admire her for it.

        • pop_top

Cosign. She’s well spoken and always well styled – I only hope I’ll figure that out that myself sometime soon!

      • greyhoundgirl

And that they let her keep the wonderful eyebrows!

    • SewingSiren

Young Hollywood take notes. This is how it’s done.

    • Pudgy Possum

I’ve seen her elsewhere in other fashion blogs, and always reveled in what she’s wearing.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Absolutely delightful, but the shoes are way to high for 13, and thus look like hey came in a plastic set with a crown, a wand and some clip on earrings.

      • Susan Baldwin

I’m sort of with you here, but then again, at the Bat Mitzvahs and dances we’ve been chaperones for lately, the girls are wearing heels.  These seem well-fitted, comfortable (i.e. her toes are not shoved in there and they seem fairly easy to walk in), and not so showy that they are too mature.

        • 3boysful

Not only do they wear heels, but slits and plunging necklines!  Clearly, I’m old.

        • Airkisses

I LOVE that her shoes fit correctly. That should be basic, no? I’m constantly amazed at the starlets that have an extra inch of heel room or their toes overflowing off the shoe.

        • Jessica Goldstein

Agreed. In an ideal world, the heels would be lower. But at least they are delicate and pretty and not a pair of monstrous platforms. Plus, you can’t buy what doesn’t exist, and pretty low heels are hard to come by.

      • Kim Elmore

oh, i like the shoes (for me, at 49!)

        • A Shiny O’Connor

Oh I LOVE the shoes for myself, and other grown-ups but I do think a kitten or short block heel a la Valentino would have been more appropriate.

      • MilaXX

In a town where 5 -6 inch heels are the norm, these are fine. I’m also pretty sure
I was wearing 3 inch heels on dressy occasions at 13.

        • A Shiny O’Connor

          Now I feel old :(

        • fursa_saida

          I definitely was.

      • Carrieanno

It’s been a long time since my daughter was 13, but I have no issue with the age appropriateness of this shoe, given its style.  It’s a nice, sweet sandal.  Had she been sporting a studded-peep-toe-platform-toe-cleavage’d stiletto, I’d have thought “Honey, go put those back in your mom’s/older sister’s closet.”

        • A Shiny O’Connor

I agree that she could have been wearing klunkers with goldfish swimming around in the platform but when I look at the feet I see a grown-up. From the ankles up, I see a perfectly turned out 13-year-old starlet. That’s the only ‘off’ thing about the look for me.

          • Beardslee

Me too.  I like the design of the shoe very much for her but that heel is just too high for a kid her age.  I gather that, for Hollywood, that IS a low heel but it is still too much.
Oh to be a podiatrist in that town.  Those women are going to ruin their feet.  In a couple years, all we’ll see on the red carpet are Danskos.

            • A Shiny O’Connor

              THANK YOU.

      • ecallaw1977

I don’t think they’re too high for 13–I’m just so grateful they’re not platforms!!!

    • Kerrie McLaughlin

Gorgeous and age appropriate! What a refreshing change. Well done, Miss Shipka.

    • Janet B

      Her smile makes me smile

    • lehen

I love a baby werq.  she is so adorable and has such great style.

    • Heather Smith

      oh, to have those eyebrows……

      • Karen Maslowski

Couldn’t she play Emma Watson’s little sister? They have very similar facial features, including the eyebrows.

    • RebeccaKW

She looks so great.  Perfect for her age.  I wish more girls looked to this route than the Kim Kardashian route (or at least, that more parents steered their girls this way).  My friend has an 8 year old who’s favorite article of clothing is short booty shorts.  Seriously, they are almost as short as Chloe’s from yesterday’s post.

      • Carrieanno

Given what young girls are exposed to these days (e.g., the above mentioned “K” initialed person), I don’t envy parents the job of raising children now.  Young kids (especially girls) seem to be pushed to extremes to look like mini adults.  Sad.

        • RebeccaKW

Very true.  All of the clothes I see out seem way too old for the age group.  Crop tops and short skirts.

    • captrenault

It’s totally age- and gender-inappropriate for me to wish this, but I so want to be BFFs with Kiki and hang out at the mall.

      • ecallaw1977

Kiki is Kirsten Dunst.  You can’t start calling Kiernan that without causing mass confusion!

    • nannypoo

We must also pay tribute to her stylist and her parent(s). There is really something fabulous about a child star whose appearance and attitude are always impeccable.

    •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

      She’s so adorable I can’t believe it.

And the fact that a little girl knows the importance of a perfect styling (I really envy her hair, looks so soft) doesn’t speak well of the rest of the actresses double (or triple) her age that step on a red carpet with shitty hair, makeup and accesories.

    • gsk241

Whoever styles Miss Kiernan deserves some sort of award.  She always looks pretty, age appropriate, and stylish.

      • the_valkyrie

I think she has a lot of say on what she wears (she seems quite knowledgeable about clothes). I envy her closet…it’s wonderful

    • altermyego

There couldn’t be a more perfect color for her. Gorgeous!

    • Pants_are_a_must

More fashion savvy than 90’% of the starlets above her age group. WERQ.

    • Nicole Seligman

is it weird that i’m jealous a 13 year old’s eyebrows? yeah, it is.

definitely a bb werq, though. everything is so *right*

    • José Boscán

Really?… Eyebrows and hair are hideous…

      • mmc2315

See?  I saw her eyebrows and thought WOW!  LOVE them!

        Your mileage may vary!

      • ChiliP

Her hair looks sleek and polished, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with her eyebrows. They are full, but have a beautiful shape and are groomed. I honestly don’t like the look (or idea) of eyebrows being plucked into oblivion, especially when the eyebrows in question belong to a 13 year old young woman.

      • Magatha

Well, if you don’t like natural dark eyebrows, you’re not going to like her look, but what is hideous about her hair? It looks soft and shiny and pretty.

    • lulukittie

Lovely, flattering *and* age-appropriate? I think that’s the baby starlet triple crown! Would that I were so poised and well-groomed at 13…

    • CaTobes

      Love her brows.

    • PeaceBang

She’s a lovely young lady but those shoes are too MOB for the look.

      • DTLAFamilies

Yes, this. And the dress hits at an unflattering point on the calf. I do love the color on her and hair and makeup are perfect, but not sure I’d call this a WERQ.

        • kerryev

          ‘Unflattering’ on a kid? Hush.

          • DTLAFamilies

The kid is in the public eye, she walks red carpets regularly and her photo was posted here so people can  comment on her outfit. So I did.

            • kerryev

Using a standard meant for grown women. I stand by my ‘yuck.’

            • DTLAFamilies

No, not a standard meant for grown women, a standard for what’s fashionable, full stop. I didn’t body snark and my criticism was extremely mild, especially for this site. Are you also similarly pearl-clutching on posts about Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld, Will Smith’s children and the many other minors critiqued by TLo?

          • Dot

Exactly. I don’t even understand what that comment means. The dress hits her just below the knee — is the implication that her legs don’t look sexy enough or something? Kind of ridiculous.

            • DTLAFamilies

No, of course not. That’s not what I meant at all. Mid-calf looks awkward to my eye and I think another length, either longer or shorter, would look better. Nothing to do with sexiness FFS. And now I’m totally aggravated because people made presumptions and read something into my comment that was not there.

        • ecallaw1977

Couldn’t disagree more.  I think this one would go on my imaginary Top 10 TLo WERQ List.

    • Scarlet39

    • Elaine Lang

She looks so much like Emma Watson, it’s uncanny.    What a lovely dress — perfect for her, not too babyish, not too mature, just the right amount of elegance and innocence.    Hair and makeup are spot on as well.

    • Judy_J

The other baby starlets need to take a page from Kiernan’s book.  She looks absolutely perfect, right down to the tips of her perfectly pedicured toes.  And she truly does look like John Hamm and January Jones are her biological parents.  That was one bit of inispired casting.  On a side note, I was watching the telly the other day and saw a cereal commercial featuring Miss Shipka.  It was obviously done in her pre-Sally Draper days.  I was so surprised I don’t remember the product name!

    • mommyca

I love her! I will have her as a style-icon for my 7-year old… I wish I had the money for the outfits though ;-)

    • MilaXX

Once again applause goes to her parents for keeping her dressed age appropriate. She looks adorable.

    • tereliz

Love that dress on her, but even more I love how her head never seems overdone. Not too much makeup, the hair is casually cool, and of course, she’s got a hell of a smile. And those eyebrows! Definitely a baby WERQ!

    • Aidan B

Oh gosh I love her. And you’re right, she really does look frighteningly like her on-screen parents.

    • snarkykitten

      She has Ken Masters’ eyebrows

    • Alloy Jane

Aaaah, this is what children her age should look like dressed up.  Absolutely lovely and perfect.  Go Miss Sally!

    • KSpence

Very pretty! I just wish she hadn’t adopted the “I have to pee” stance.

      • alyce1213

Yeah, I hate that stance, but she does it so casually and elegantly, I barely noticed.

    • alyce1213

She is amazing, and from the top of her pretty head to her tastefully manicured little toes, she is perfection.
That dress is SO, SO gorgeous.  She deserves it and it deserves to be worn by her.
      WERQ squared.

    • BrooklynBomber

Beautiful. For my taste the look is a little too sophisticated for 13, but taken on its own merits, it’s pretty much perfect.

    • Cate Young

No one does a carpet like Shipka!

    • Alyssa

She always looks age-appropriate, and yet still dresses with a fashion-maturity that most adult celebrities don’t seem to possess. She is so cute and pretty, and I love her hair!

    • dsco3031

I agree with the casting director praise! Not only does she look like she could be their daughter, she sounds like January Jones and has her/Betty’s mannerisms down pat. She’s really a great actress, and I’m interested to see what else comes from her once the show is done.

    • throwaneyeonthis

The heels are appropriate for her dress and age.  The dress calls for heels and would look mis-matched and out of balance with a flat.

    • Gayer Than Thou

I totally co-sign the WERQ on this — age-appropriate without being twee, stylish without being precocious.  Make-up is perfect.

    • m0r0

Shocked to see you approve of a mid calf length dress. Highly unusual for you.

    • warnerave

she looks put together..hope she stays grounded and does not end up like lindsay lohan…

    • crash1212

I hope she never succumbs to any suggestion that she touch her eyebrows aggressively with tweezers. They are perfection – as is her hair. She’s making all the right choices right now. Very worthy of the WERQ.

    • marlie

Adorable! And she’s definitely not a child or a girl anymore… she’s definitely turning into a young lady!

    • EEKstl

She has never put a foot wrong on the RC.  Either she has baby gays or very stylish parents!

    • Dot

J’adore. She is perfection and she makes it look so effortless. Hope she never gives in to the trashy Hollywood starlet fashion victim look.

      • Lilak

        . . . nor to the over-calculated, over-polished fashionista look!

And you’re right: effortlessness (real or apparent) is what puts her natural good taste into WERQ territory every time.

    • Natasha Nyanin

She looks great! Time to start giving Baby Werqs to some full grown adults too: of course, that would be the mother of all shade!

    • kikisayshi

      What a doll.

    • BlondettaChick

Thirteen-year-old me is suddenly fiercely envious and has no idea why.

    • CallMeJane

I love and respect her parents.  Beautiful, age appropriate – maturing into quite a lovely young lady AND she looks like she’s having fun.

    • C Deal

      Simply Gorgeous!

    • sk8tfan

Perfection. Age appropriate but beautiful. And the Fanning girls need to steal her makeup artist.

    • random_poster

You don’t even need to qualify it as a Baby WERQ.  It a true WERQ.  The girl is a doll.

    • Sam Smith

adorbs.  and while I love her brows, I feel like they are a smidge too dark.

      • PaulaBerman

I noticed that too but felt inhibited from saying it.

    • MoHub

Will little girls ever wear little-girl shoes again? Those sandals make it look as if she’s playing dress-up.

      • lrhg

Eh, she’s 13 not 8. Go to any junior high dance and the girls will be wearing heels at least that high. (Heck, half of them will be in the Steve Madden platforms with a 6-inch heel).

        • MoHub

I’m not asking for black patent Mary Janes with anklets. I just think a nice, dressy ballet flat or something with a kitten heel would look less aging and clunky. I personally got my first heels when I was her age back in the Stone Age, and they were very simple oval-toe pumps with a 1.5-inch heel.

          • Therese Bohn

Actually, I think this is the first time we’ve seen Kiernan in a grown-up shoe.  Up to now she’s been in mostly little flats. You can review all her looks here — oh how she’s growing up into a fine young lady!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

What a little beauty!!!  Love her because she reminds me of my favorite niece.  :)

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I want to be Kiernan when I grow up. Except she’s less than half my age.

    • librarygrrl64

I feel like it’s a little too pale on her (but maybe that’s just in photos), and the heels are a bit high, but she’s probably a little older now than I am remembering.

    • Drew Macaulay

Both beautiful and adorable, at the same time.

    • guest2visits

So nice; perfect little dress. I love all the fabrics now that are being embellished with knots, or beads, or sequins, to give texture
and interest to the materials without taking them into ice skaters’ costume or show girl territory.

    • anotherkate

She looks fantastic. Like a “lovely young lady,” just as your grandmother would put it (and I mean that as a compliment–my grandma is pretty chic). I also LOVE that the description calls this “a pink dress.” It looks expensive and probably IS a designer, but there’s something refreshing about not having a name dropped in association with an actress who is still a little girl.

    • pattycap11

i don’t know who her stylist is, but hat’s off to him/her.  and hat’s off to kiernan too.  here is one young girl who always seems to make the perfect choice for the event, for her age, for herself.  this could be a difficult age, yet here she is again with a great dress that suits her well.  and a natural look that’s not rushing into middle age.  she comes off affectless, secure, happy and bright, a great combination in hollywoodland.

    • Isabel

TLo – love the title – Baby WERQ.

Keep up the great job with titles and nicknames

    • ScarlettHarlot

I want to adopt her as my little sister. That is all.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She nailed it – cannot WAIT for the new season!!

    • Elizabetta1022

I adore that little girl. She comes off as genuine and real, and is a great little actress, to boot.

    • Jeff Warhurst

Wow; she does look like January Jones/Jon Hamm!

    • decormaven

Glorious look! She is a beauty.

    • Pamela

I think she could play Emma Watson’s little sis.

    • KateWo

Wow, Mad Men got so lucky with her.  Amazing actress, and they can totally age her up with the timing of the show without being creepy.

    • kingderella

shipka WERQs it each and every time i see her on this blog. ironically, this may be the first time i dont love her look. its alright, but a little too princessy for my taste.

    • luluransom

      Lovely, just lovely.

    • Darva Sutra

    • Kim Brightman

So much better than those Fanning sisters!

    • hannabanana

I hope no one ever touches her brows. She’s exquisite.

    • Polka_Dotty

Noooo! She’s growing up too fast. In five years she’s gone from a little girl to a young lady. While I’ve been old forever.

    • CeeQ

Wow so stylish! Really can’t fault it. Love the shoes!

    • margaret meyers

Is she in middle school?  Bar/Bat Mitzvah time — she’ll be the chic-est kid on the dance floor hopping to Gangnum Style.

    • Kara Hallead

I love her eyebrows! So glad no one’s convinced her to pluck or dye them.

    • Trisha26

She looks very pretty yet still age-appropriately “cute” in a rather grown-up looking dress. Well done.

    • Andrea Grenadier

How adorable and elegant is that?! How odd and wonderful that she gets it right, and women who *should* know better, simply can’t.

    • quiltrx

Agreed.  I can’t find a thing wrong with it.  And she doesn’t look just ‘cute’ or ‘adorable’–she looks very pretty and confident.

    • Cecilia Lin

At first glance I really thought that was Emma Watson when she was around the time of Prisoner of Azkaban though to be honest Kiernan does dress better than Emma did…

    • Maev

Did January Jones and Jon Hamm have thing about fourteen years ago?  Because that’s the only way I can explain it (that said, I’ve been trying to figure for ages what it is that makes her resemble Hamm, because she clearly does, but I can see what precisely it is.  Something around the eyes maybe?)  She looks sweet as pie.

    • Molly

It’s uncanny how much she looks like Jon Hamm and January Jones. Also, she looks adorableee!

    • Dino Bonačić

      baby emma watson! :D

    • AutumnInNY

What a beautiful young lady she is. And yes Tlo perfect casting, she does look like the daughter of Don & Betty.

    • FourPointOhMyGracious

This is a really stupid question but I truly can’t tell (which is probably the point): does she have highlights or is she naturally two toned?

    • Bob Sponge

A young January Jones with John Hamm’s eyebrows. Tres chic!

    • littlemac8

A WERQ indeed!  She looks pretty and age appropriate which is apparently a very difficult thing to achieve!
