Anne Hathaway in Switzerland

Posted on January 03, 2013

Miss Annie, after having taken her diva act on tour throughout the world for the Les Miz poledance, took it to the streets of Switzerland, land of hot cocoa and cheese.

Cheese being the operative word here.

Anne Hathaway and her hubby Adam Shulman out and about in Gstaad, Switzerland. Anne is carrying a Stella McCartney bag.

Grace Embossed Faux Nappa Shoulder Bag

It’s … kinda? Cute? In that “blanket with sleeves” kind of way. But geez, the lady can’t even wear buffalo plaid without making it look a bit pretentious and attention-seeking.  We suppose we wouldn’t have any issue with this, except for that purse, which is so discordant with the rest of the look that it becomes really distracting.

He, on the other hand, is pretty delicious. No complaints there, Annie.

Maybe the bag is meant to stand out as a promotional job?  Does she need to do that??

    • VicksieDo

I love that coat to death!!

    • AuntieAnonny

I don’t think “need” factors into any of these “feature the bag” street shots. Designers are looking for people who are always getting their photos taken and have good vibes for this kind of propaganda, not someone who has a shit reputation and needs a gig.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Is it me or does he have a Ryan Gosling vibe going on?  I kind of love her coat.  It’s freezing in Manhattan today and I want to burrow in all that plaid.

    •  He surely does!  I almost asked myself if she was in Gstaad shooting a flick with RG.

    • kimmeister

I’m also getting James Van Der Beek in the first photo.

    • NC_Meg

I actually thought it was Ryan Gosling at first but then realized he probably wouldn’t be on vacation in Switzerland with Anne Hathaway.

      •  That’s what I thought. Kind of a slightly off-kilter copy of Ryan Gosling.

The coat she’s wearing would be great if you were at a football game. It’s just silly in Gstaad. And the bag, while nice enough, looks too small and too yellow with that get up.

      • glennethph

You know, Eva Mendes isn’t going to let that shit happen. lol

        • bitchybitchybitchy

No way-Eva would be ready to quietly cut someone to protect her Ryan.

    • kolokOlchik

I thought it was the Gosling upon first glance and then the second and the third.

  • TheLaurenJean

Over her. She’s becoming my new Kate Winslet. Except I still like Kate.

  • save_the_hobbit

Not really seeing the pretentious, but…the bag does indeed look like cheese. I’m hungry now.

  • Hayley Doyle

I thought it was Ryan Gosling at first! I think she looks good!

    • christinewithanx

They came to an event I was working last year and I did think it was Gosling at first. Really similar.

  • This is clearly a “I need to use this bag somehow, oh hell I’ll wear it to the pastry shop and back” moment.

  • MilaXX

Agreed, the bag kills what would otherrwise be  a cute, casual look.  Next time have them give you a less crazy colored bag to pimp.

    •  I doubt they get a color choice.  Bags and shoes probably just show up, unannounced.

      • MilaXX

your probably right. Shame though, causse with the rightoutfit, I’d be coveting that bag

  • jennsilentcrow

Absolutely no to the bag in this scenario. BIG No to the coat…maybe it’s just a blanket from the chalet bed? In another print or color I think I’d go for it.

  • Anathema_Device

She looks kind of Aspen or Park City here, which works in Switzerland. The bag is all wrong with it, though.

  • nannypoo

Is “faux nappa” a euphemism for “plastic”? For $1400 my nappa had better not be faux. In any case, it won’t be this ugly bag, but I would cut a bitch for that coat.

    •  Yup – Stella McCartney doesn’t use leather/animal fibres, so that is your finest pleather.

      • ampg

I especially love how the closure gaps awkwardly open, giving it that straight-from-TJ-Maxx look.

        • LOL! My sister had the most obnoxious yellow pleather TJ Maxx purse. Bought it with her employee discount back in the day.

    • another_laura

Seriously, what is a nappa, such that you can have faux nappa?

  • Annabelle Archer

Sometimes, when it’s really cold out, I’ll wrap up in a blanket and step outside for a puff, and that’s okay. But I am not a celebrity and no one is taking my picture.
That coat is tragic and that purse is fugly.

Also, the fact that her shoelaces match the coat thing
    is making me twitchy.

  • The bag’s a repeat from summer (sad that I know this), so I think it’s one she just likes and carries with everything, regardless of taste.

  • alyce1213

She almost always wears clothing with some degree of pretentiousness, but this is okay.  The bag shows that she’s really not so sure of herself.
He — no complaints?? How did you let it pass? His hair is really greasy and his coat is stained!

  • dress_up_doll

Actually lovin’ the buffalo check coat. It’s perfect for this chilly east coast winter day. The purse, umm…not feelin’ it.

    • lindsmh

I’m with you. I would totally rock that coat AND those shoes.

      • ampg

I’m too short for that coat, but I love it so much.  I still have the floor-length multicolored blanket coat I got when they were in style one winter in the early 90’s – I don’t wear it anymore but I can’t bear to part with it.

  • Kimbolina

The coat just looks too big.  And not in a deliberate way.  And I hate the fringe.  On a blanket, yes.  On a coat?  No way.

  • schadenfreudelicious

While her coat shouts Brokeback Mountain, her bag is all Devil Wears Prada, a little too drastic a combination for me, endorsement or not….

  • SewingSiren

She’s working that bag like Janice on the Price is Right. I do like the coat though.

  • Vickiefantastico

I’m so tired of her! I hate to be rude, but there it is. And that ugly blanket thing paired with that color purse is ridiculous.

  • Sobaika

Her jacket/snuggie looks absolutely comfy on a frigid day like today.

  • Once I was getting gas in LA and the woman at the opposite pump was wearing a Snuggie. I mean, I know it’s just pumping gas. But still, one couldn’t trade the Snuggie for, say, a sweatshirt? I wouldn’t leave the house in a Snuggie. Plus it seems like it would be difficult to drive in (might get tangled in the gearshift, say).

Her “coat” is like that gas station Snuggie.

    • kimmeister

I have difficulty just padding around the house in my Snuggie.  I end up having to turn the bottom half into a sort of sarong.  I can’t imagine leaving the house with it!

  • StellaZafella

She’s having a drag moment, bless her lil’ pole dancin’ heart, even if it is “street” drag. He’s just her VERY cute accessory.

You’re right about the bag…and I think it’s what makes the whole thing look like it’s trying too hard.

  • Judy_J

    I love her sunglasses.

  • crash1212

I love the blankie/coat – actually I love her whole outfit as well as her best accessory – that dishy husband! I must confess that I hate the purse…seems that Stella can’t even design a bag I like…why is she in fashion again?

  • She didn’t need any other accoutrement than her date. Should have just piled on all black wool, the better for him to shine on her arm.

  • filmcricket

Happy new year, Tom and Lorenzo!

I actually quite like the bag, but it is all wrong for the outfit. The coat, if it is indeed a proper coat, is to die for. I think, minus the bag, she looks cute. But does the coat actually have buttons/fasteners? Or is part of her arm clenching about keeping it closed?
I hope his hair is “just out of the shower” rather than “greasy” here.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Love Anne and like everything about this look (including the cute hubby accessory) apart from the purse.  Stella, I get that you are all vegan and pure and everything, but just say NO to fake leather.

  • oatmealpie

She must have seen Lincoln and been inspired by the presidential poncho.

  • siriuslover

I never put pretentious and Anne Hathaway together. Hmmm… Something to think about, I guess. I agree that uhm, coat is a bit of an eyesore. Love her purse, actually, and hubbie is A-OK.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Disagreeing with you fabulous gays for once. That coat is KILLA. The purse is cute and I like the contrast…with a coat that big you need something small that takes away some of the bulky look. His hair has way too much product in it.

  • formerlyAnon

I think she looks fabulous, with the glaring exception of the purse. If you have to have a purse that is discordantly formal for your attire, it should blend in as much as possible, e.g., be black.

The market for coats like that is precisely those who can have enough coats that one needn’t wear it daily and can save it for casual days. Love that her shoelaces match the red.

  • stubbornthoughts

I think she looks super comfy! I’m not sold on the fringe/outright blanket look, but she doesn’t look like she’s trying too hard as much as she’s just dressing to stay warm. The purse looks easy to carry and the perfect size for walking around.

Also, I love me some Annie Hathaway. 🙂

  • If Anne can’t think of anything else to do with that bag, I would gladly take it off her hands.

  • Bill Curtis

    That boy gives serious neck.

  • SneakyKitty

I dunno, I think the coat is cute and looks super comfy.  I like the bag too, but it does stick out an awful lot against the coat.  Whatever, I still love her.

  • tallgirl1204

I love the coat.  Please, please find out where it’s from.

  • It’s about 3 degrees Farenheit here in Boston, so that coat looks like a warm fluffy blanket. I love it. The purse does look a bit like cheddar, but I’m always confused as to why the thing that holds your car keys needs to coordinate with your skirt.

    • jmw1122

I’m in Boston too so I totally agree with this. That coat would’ve served me nicely when I was waiting for the train in the -10 degree Farenheit wind chill this morning. I wants it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Full backlash mode, I see. She’s cheesy and she tries too hard, but can’t fault a girl for selling a bag on pre-arranged paparazzi shots when all she wants is to snuggle in her horse blanket and hang out with a Goslingy husband.

    • Pennymac

Love the word “Goslingy” as an adjective! (And BTW-fits Mr Hathaway to a T)

  • Lilithcat

I love that coat.  But, of course, I live in Chicago, where it would be very useful.  Besides, I’m an outerwear addict.

  • Love the coat. Hate the bag. Why is everything Stella McCartney so….

  • l_c_ann

I wonder how many pieces of luggage she travels with, those two coats would fill two bags and put most of us over our pound allowances.

If it’s snow cold, why aren’t either of them wearing hats?  Or was this just for the photos?

  • Imasewsure

I don’t know… I’m seeing “pretentious and attention-seeking” here and also I think the coat is kind of ugly. She does look really cosy though… Love hubby’s coat for sure

  • Isadora Paiva

The coat doesn’t match the purse or the lack of gloves. At least her husband has his hands in his pockets, she just looks weird with hers naked.

  • Jecca2244

I bet she is staying at Valentino’s chalet. I am too jet lagged to comment on the clothes.

  • I feel like Ms Anne is in danger of slipping into a lot of people’s irrational hatred bucket. Poor Anne. I like her and I don’t mind the coat.

The bag is awful here though.

    • OrigamiRose

YES!  I’ve never understood the hatred she inspires in people, until the last month or so.  Now I’m board the hate train with them.

  • julnyes

I’m a fan of the coat, but the purse doesn’t go at all. I’m not getting the love for her hubby, but who cares – I didn’t marry him.

  • unbornfawn

Nice job showing off the Apple logo.

  • bluefish

  • Zippypie

Hate it all.  She looks like a Sundance catalog shoot.  And her hubby needs a hair wash – too much product.

  • That is one fugly bag, I don’t know how I feel about a throw being used as a coat, considering the setting, it’s ok I guess, but I love her sunglasses.

  • momogus

I love whatever that red blankety-coaty-capey thing is! I want one!

  • It’s Switzerland in January… GIRL, where are your GLOVES?  Poor frozen fingers.

  • BrooklynBomber

Seems like when someone gets famous the way she’s famous, almost anything they wear during their off time runs the risk of looking ironic or meta or or otherwise not quite genuine. Anyway, this is from Christopher Isherwood’s review of the movie. It’s pitch perfect, and it’s not so much a comment on her, I feel, as it is on American movies/movie stardom and the Oscars:

“Anne Hathaway, you go, girl! You can make room on the mantel for that Oscar right now: to play a saint and a whore at the same time is to up the ante on awards bait. Besides, they did their damnedest to make you look unpretty. Still, even as poor Fantine sang herself to death in that Parisian infirmary, I couldn’t banish the thought that you looked so ghoulishly ravishing that you could have leapt to your feet and walked an Alexander McQueen runway with minimal adjustment to the death-throes maquillage.”

  • bertkeeter

  • I want her shoes!

  • And maybe the scarf. She can keep the rest of the outfit, though…

  • pookiesmom

I think she looks comfy, warm, and relaxed, all of which are perfect for a vacay in the Alps. Also, she was easily the best thing in Les Mis (along with Eddie Redmayne), so she’s earned whatever air of pretention she may or may not be exuding. I love this look.

  • glennethph

OMG, give her the Oscar already!  Just so I don’t have to see her smug face in the next few months.

Or will that make her even smugger (if that’s physically possible)?

  • GorgeousThings

    Designer Slanket. How attractive.

  • I felt you were being a little harsh, but I realized – if it’s cold enough for a fancy slanket, why isn’t she even wearing gloves?  A bit much.

It’s entirely possible that I’m just bitter about being cold without the glamor of Switzerland.

  • guest2visits

Everything looks great except the bag; it doesn’t go and I think I even hate it.
I could never wear a coat as big and plaid as that, but she does it very well.
My cocoa is in a can by the frig. My prefered cheese is spicy and not at all Swiss.  Yay… I just saved a bundle in air fare.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The husband is tres cute, indeed-no wonder the woman has been burbling in all of her interviews.
In regard to the purse, perhaps we need a petition for a Stella McCartney-free zone?

  • elzatelzabelz

I just saw her in Les Miserables and she can be a diva anytime. Woman has earned it.

I love that coat!  Perfect for vacation in a cold, wintery climate with your new hubby.  And the bag? It’s a cyte bag, she’s on vacation so really? probably just grabbed a bag, flung it over the shoulder and went out.  It’s yellow, so what?  Anything in black or red woud have gotten the “too matchy” smack down.  I think she looks great, not getting “pretentious” at all.

    • TRSTL

Also, saw a pic this morning of Gwen Stefani in London pushing a stroller, wearing a large blanket coat in black and white with a chunky scarf ” boots.  Would love to get the T&Lo take on that.  She looked awesome to me……

  • Gag me with a mother effing spoon… I love the plain snuggie comment, thanks guys!

  • Being able to wear Buffalo Plaid and not actually look the size of a Buffalo is pretty amazing guys, give Annie a break!
