Anne Hathaway in Saint Laurent

Posted on January 09, 2013

Yes, yes. We’re all sick of her. But we’re in the throes of award season, so her press juggernaut is only likely to increase in intensity. Besides, she keeps wearing things worthy of discussion and that’s so rarely true of our stars, darlings.

Dig, if you will, these pictures:

Anne Hathaway attends the 2013 National Board of Review Awards Gala in Saint Laurent. Sandals by Givenchy.

Saint Laurent Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Julia Nobis (ELITE)

Givenchy Spring 2012 Ankle-strap Sandal

Serving up “Prince & the Revolution at a funeral” realness. We really love this look. It’s cute, sexy fun, with great style. We think the tuxedo pants look a little baggy on her, but hey, maybe she was retaining water or something. Not every pant needs to be a skinny pant. We do wish she’d chosen a clutch with some color to it. All that black is a bit on the depressing side. Also, our feet are cold just looking at her in those shoes.

But still: super-cute and stylish. Love the hair.

  • She looks really good and comfortable. You can tell that she likes what she’s wearing, can’t you? Love the shoes, although I hear ya. Probably not the best choice for January, but still… Her hair is amaze! Brava Anne!

  • I hate those shoes. Every time I see them worn, all I can see is the toes hanging off the edge, getting absolutely manky from walking on pavement or the red carpet or whatever.

Now I have that damned song stuck in my head. What *does* it sound like when doves cry?

    • Kayceed

Coo coo boo hoo coo coo

    •  Animals strike curious poses…

      • random_poster

They feel the heat…the heat between me and you

        • barbarienne

And with those shoes, what if we just leave her standing alone in a world that’s so cold? Huh? What then?

          • cowper

             The world that’s so cold!

    • decormaven

Dig if you will, the picture…

      • Of you and I engaged in a kiss? Nothing makes my day like surfing over to TLo and finding a world of Prince jokes. I am complete, thank you. I’m going to bed now.

        • halleygee

          Total LOL moment!! Greatness TLo.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Agree about the shoes. I have a personal dislike for sandals that cut the toes off in a straight line like that.

    • Derek_anny

Being only slightly  young for the Prince craze, I don’t have too strong of a connection.  But now “When doves cry” is linked to Michael McQuilken’s shoulderblades.  Wanted to share, because it’s a lovely visual.

  • I love her dearly. and that Oscar is pretty much hers at this point, right? She’s working that publicity pole for all it’s worth.

    • Not if Gidget has anything to say about it. Lincoln is the kind of movie Hollywood likes to reward. And Sally Field is just magnificent in it.

  • Damn. Girl sure the hell knows how to wear clothes.

  • Whoa! Goth pixie right there. I actually like the shoes because I think they balance out the heaviness of the neck bow and lace cuffs.

    • Snailstsichr

Goth Pixie – yes! I can’t imagine her in  this with long hair. Her short hair is growing on me, even though I miss the long hair still. This is a great look and the hair is perfect for it.

    • formerlyAnon

I did think that as much as a solid black boot (for instance) would be more appropriate, it would have nudged things over into too much black. So I’d vote for a black boot with white accents of some kind.

  • Annabelle Archer

    Cute enough.
I too wish the pants fit better, but at least they aren’t the ridiculous dropped crotch look or anything.
    The shoes are tres sexy.
But most importantly, she is giving in person what she lacks in photos, a genuine smile and lack of pretension.

  • GorgeousThings

I’m sick to death of her, just as I was of Natalie Portman during the BlackSwanaganza. But I do love her hair. It’s a modern take on the Vidal Sassoon 5 point cut and looks fabulous on her. And while I get cold just looking at her toes, I am SO glad that thin soled shoes are back on the way in. Get rid of those damned horse hoofs that have been clomping around for the past few years!

    •  Agree agree agree agree agree!  Except I somehow never got sick of Natalie Portman.

      • Sobaika

        I find that astounding.

        •  So do I..   I can’t explain it.

        • GorgeousThings

I’ll give Anne one thing over Nat – in interviews, you don’t usually get the feeling that she thinks she’s smarter than everyone in the room. Portman used to come across as a pseudo-intellectual snob. At least AH comes across as a more normal person. So when the awards season is over, I’ll probably go back to liking her.

          • Nicholas

I don’t know about that with Portman; she constantly uses superfluous valley girl interjections such as “… like …”, which drives you crazy, if you notice it.

I think the problem is that there is always some kind of distance between her and the interviewer as opposed to Hathaway, who might just be the most bubbly woman in Hollywood, and just teeth-rottingly sweet.

Watch the interview with her on Charlie Rose—or anywhere else for that matter. I think it is really hard to dislike her, if you’ve watched an interview with her (where the interviewer isn’t a misogynist asshole).

          • GorgeousThings

“(where the interviewer isn’t a misogynist asshole).”

You mean like Matt Lauer on the Today Show? I wanted to smack him. But that’s par for the course. 😉

          • Nicholas

Lauer or people with an unhealthy interest in her training and dieting regimen.

That Lauer didn’t get any pushback for his interview just shows everything wrong with the industry. Same reason Chris Brown still has a career.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

We can argue over which one of us gets to smack Matt Lauer first!

          • formerlyAnon

Gloves, please ladies. Don’t want to touch that mouth.

          • Both women are amazing rappers though!

    • MissAnnieRN

The hair is Amazeballs.  I can see it turning into a really cute angled bob as time goes on.  It looks simply amazing on her.  Everytime I look at her though with those eyes and that smile – it’s like a better looking, more modern Liza staring back at me.  I don’t mean that in a bad way, but I almost want to see a Cabaret revival with her as Sally Bowles.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. This hair cut has changed my perception of her attractiveness completely. It is just So Much Better (in my opinion, of course) than any other hair style I’ve ever seen on her.

    • filmcricket

One thing one can say for Anne (vs. Natalie) is that at least her choices are usually interesting. Portman’s an exquisitely beautiful woman, but she pretty much wore prom dresses throughout that whole awards season. Part of that was due to being pregnant, if I’m not getting those timelines mixed up, but she was in an incredible style rut. While I don’t often like Anne’s outfits, she’s not boring.

      • Mary229

You are correct though that Natalie was pregnant.  She was several months along.  And she was BIG for being several months along at the Oscars.  I think it’s hard to compare a tall, slim woman like Anne trying to dress vs. a woman who was going through her first pregnancy.

    • Both women are amazing rappers though!

  • Vaniljekjeks

Love it, and the hair.  Wouldn’t pick those shoes but she looks great.

  • I think if the pants were hemmed just a little shorter they wouldn’t bag out like that. I was going with Austin Powers at a funeral myself! Loving her hair.

  • Love this look. I want every single piece. Except – wait – I’m a real person with a budget. One that doesn’t lend itself to Givenchy shoes – which I covet! Guess I will just have to pretend-shop!

  • She just LOOKS like she is having fun! That alone carries this look- delightful…

  • I don’t think these shoes work so well with pants.  The interesting part of the shoe is hidden and all I see is a strap and splayed toes. But she makes a pussy bow (if you can call that extravagant thing a pussy bow) look good..

  • Why is she the only Academy Award contender who seems to be pursuing her Oscar via fashion?  Why are there not dozens of posts on, say, Amy Adams or Jennifer Lawrence, both of whom are also Oscar contenders this year?

    • StellaZafella

I don’t see it as pursuing the award through fashion…she does have talent…and one of the biggest budget films of the year to pole dance. Perhaps Ms. Adams and Lawrence simply aren’t wearing such remark-able fashion?

      • Mary229

Again, I think it has less to do with the women themselves and everything to do with the KIND of events their movies made them attend.   Les Mis had premieres and press events all over the world.   Amy Adams has won a ton of awards already for The Master but many of them were given out without an event where she was supposed to show up and pose for a camera.   It has to do with the KIND of movie.

        • Mary229

And truly…I think the time when you are going to see Amy Adams front and center is not going to be right now.  It’s going to be in 2-3 months when publicity for Superman: Man of Steel is going to drop.  Same for Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games sequel.  You have to remember…Anne already did the Batman rounds earlier in the year.  Amy is still waiting for her huge blockbuster role to hit this summer.

    • MoHub

Because Hathaway pretty much has a lock on the award, and everyone else just fades into the background.

      • Mary229

I don’t think they fade into the background. I just think they were in different kinds of movies.  Amy Adams was magnificent in The Master. She’s going to get an Oscar one of these days.  But the movie itself was more of a festival circuit movie that wasn’t for wide audience appeal.  The film didn’t have as many events to show up at all over the world in different oufits.

    • Sobaika

She’s gotten the most buzz going into awards season, so a lot of the designers are flocking to her for that reason alone. Also some of the other contenders aren’t appearing at as many events – Jennifer Lawrence is currently filming the next Hunger Games movie, for example.

The other one doing the poledance is Jessica Chastain, and she doesn’t exactly have the fashion know-how (yet!) that Anne does.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

Ladypants! Love this and LOVE her hair.

  • In_Stitches

Wish she’d worn a white shirt like the model to add some contrast and definition, but it’s still a slam dunk.   I’d give it a werq, but I’m an Anne-lover, so that’s probably just my bias talking.  Also, when did her bangs grow out like crazy?

  • crash1212

I am not sick of her. Keep it coming. Love this look, but agree that a clutch with color would’ve been nice.

  • SublimatedRage

I love it — I think she should have gone for the hat too.  Not the hat shown with the model, but one of Christian Siriano’s fabulous floppy hats that he made in the PR finale his season….. that would be too awesome!

  • DeebaCee

I loved the outfit until I got to the shoes. The shoes nearly killed the entire thing for me

  • ralish

Ugh, you can have either 1) giant neck bow or 2) cuff ruffles, but I cannot give you both.

    • Sobaika

Agreed, this would have been a home run for me if it weren’t for the bow. Pushes it just a little bit into the ‘Too Much’ category.

      • ralish

Yeah, I think it’s a little bit too much “I’m an arteeest”

    • formerlyAnon

I’d agree for most people and settings. But the “red” carpet of even the most tame gala is the place for minor excess. And she’s definitely tall enough to carry both neck bow and ruffles.

I say this as someone who hates “pussy bows” on virtually all women’s wear.

  • I’m guessing that she’s doing a mock late-18th century male thing, and the shoes are too modern, feminine, and skimpy for the look. The pants are, also, too ill-fitting, too typical tuxedo for the look. If you’re going to go for something like this, then GO FOR IT wholeheartedly.

  • I love her hair so much.  I hope she keeps it short for a while.  It really suits her.

  • Kayceed

Love the New Romantic look, especially with the hair – she looks quite fetching.

  • Janet B

Wrong shoe, but the rest is fantastic.

How much longer until the Academy Awards?

    • kimmeister

      More than a month – they’re on Feb 24th.

  • Laylalola

I don’t know, she really almost could be at any business conference.

    • formerlyAnon

Your business conferences are MUCH more fabulous than mine.

  • Lordette Fauntleroy.

  • Judy_S

I love this! I would also like to see some color, maybe in the shirt area, but she looks splendid.

  • CPK1

love it minus the fit of the pants and the shoes (as usual agreeing with TLO) Love the shirt. SO MUCH.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The sandals-in-the-winter micro trend has got to STOP. What the hell is wrong with stylists.

Other than that, she’s cute, but all I can see is Noel Fielding.

  • m0r0

    Liza with a Z

    • StellaZafella

       Anne with an E

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Pretty, and you’re right about the unrelieved black needing a contrast. Those shoes are wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • Dot

Love her hair! I would have liked to see her break the black up a bit, but I still really like this look.

  • What you said about her making campaign for the Catwoman movie… now it’s making more sense to me.

  • Pennymac

I can’t really find any fault here. And her hair is adorable. But those shoes remind me of the phrase “toe cliffs”. We’ve gone from thick soled platform clodstompers to fanatically thin barely there sandals? Please, is the middle ground so bad, stylists????

  • it feels very Liza to me. I like that so much better- more short haired women should go for Liza (with a Z!) instead of Twiggy. I dig it though, even if the pants need to be a little more fitted.

  • filmcricket

The pants need to fit better, and I kind of wish she’d chosen another blouse. All that black, plus the big bow, is a lot on her shorter frame. It works on the model because she’s taller and is wearing a white blouse which breaks up the look better. Anne looks like she’s being swallowed.

Hair and makeup are fabulous, though, and I love the shoes.

  • SO CUTE, but why not a cool boot?

  • Give her a trombone and she could lead an all emo high school band!

  • I don’t like the shoes, but love the slight nod towards 18th century French menswear.

  • decormaven

Just the tiniest bit of color on the tips or toes would have been the capper for this look. I think it looks smashing. Despite the Anne-ui, she’s got some serious fashion connects.

  • mjude

    i love the look

  • jw_ny

I’m not sick of Anne!  She’s one of the only celebs out there that is interesting…fashion-wise. She’s been showing a lot of variety.  I really like this outfit, and I typically hate the big flouncy bows, and never was a fan of the artist formerly known as Prince either.

  • sk8tfan

Love this. Although my first thought was “wow, her feet must be freezing” and then I saw that my favorite pretend gay uncles had commented on that very thing. Which is why they are my favorite pretend gay uncles-nothing gets past them.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I’m okay with the fit of the pants … maybe Anne was planning on eating a triscuit or something while she was out. I’d love this more if she ditched the bow (and I have an irrational hatred of black finger/toe nail polish — actually, I think it is a rational hatred — it is just so ugly).

  • jonnyf8

Oh T-Lo!  We are NOT all sick of her.  We will only start to doubt her if she comes out with a GOOP equivalent.  And the Oscar is going to be hers because she elevated TWO films with diverse supporting performances.  And she looks super-cute too.  Would It have been OK if she’d carried the yellow McCartney clutch today or is that too bumblebee-esque?

  • elemspbee

Yup. super cute, chic, and stylish.

  • RebeccaKW

LOVE this.  Love love love.  I kind of wish for a different shoe, just for some color.  Not that I don’t love all black, but I think it would have been great to see a pop of color at her feet.  I also like the more neutral makeup with this look.

  • thecitysleeps

I very much love this.  Although as you said it needed some colour.  And I’d have gone with just a kick ass pair of closed stilettos.

  • Laura Toepfer

“Dig, if you will, these pictures.” hahahaha Thank you for reaching out to your Readers Of A Certain Age.

  • Scott Isaacs

“Dig, if you will, these pictures:”
Also: “Serving up “Prince & the Revolution at a funeral” realness.”

BAM. Like that, my day is made. Oh, and Anne looks pretty marv here too.

  • Cathy S

Love it! Not so much the shoes, which are great, but not for this outfit.

  • random_poster

Girls is serving it up. You go, Annie!

  • kimmeister

Didn’t she wear almost this exact look in a magazine photo spread recently?  Or was that Gwen Stefani?

ETA: It was Gwen in a post from December. It looked better on Gwen with the white shirt.

  • SewingSiren

Everything is good except the shoes, which are all wrong for the look.

  • I love it. This is perfect for her. She’s really figured out how to dress the hairstyle now, and I’m digging it.

  • That is just fantastic. You won’t get any arguement from me for putting up so many pics of Miss Anne. Like you said, at least her (and Ms. Washington) are having fun and wearing interesting things. I love it.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    hahahahaahPrincehahahahhaahha it’s true!!!!

    But she’s really stylish

  • I love everything about this look. Want.

  • Stop torturing us please.

  • jilly_d

Too. Much.  But above the neck does look extraordinary and I’m not sick of her….yet.

  • Thank you for mentioning cold feet.  That was my first thought, too.

  • Carla Paisley

pregnant. You heard it here first, Uncles T and Lo….

    • UglyTalents

Oh no. Please no. I mean, mazel tov and everything, but I can’t with Anne Hathaway’s “baby bump” (retch) for nine months.

  • snarkykitten

    I dig.

  • UglyTalents

I love this. But then, I was a goth teenager with a secret Prince obsession in the ’80s. And yes, her poor little (OscarTM-worthy) toes.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

    She looks really cute.

I have a question though: All this poledancing- is she the only one doing it?  I just saw The Impossible and if she and Naomi Watts are nominated in the same category, she definitely has competition (personally, I’d same Naomi killed it!).  Not to mention Sally Field in Lincoln.  I’m just wondering why Anne is all over the place, and while the other two are out and about, no one is out and about to the extreme that Anne is.

Just wondering what the thought is behind all this…

    • UglyTalents

Are the other ladies’ publicists just throwing in the towel already? And she’s the assumptive winner already, so she’s getting the most press attention…. Les Mis has quite a press juggernaut. I don’t think Fields cares; she’s not Awards-y, and she has hers already.

  • Super cute shoes, even if she looks cold wearing them. Realize she was going for a neutral face, but would have loved to have seen a bolder lip.

  • Bree The Vole

This gets WERQ from me, she looks fantastic. Also, I would dress like this all the time if I only had face/body/energy for it.

  • Mistie Holler

That’s my dream outfit. I’d feel incredible wearing that. Good work, Anne!

  • Lilak

I’m casting a WERQ vote, too.

Her hair is just right for the size and shape of her head (that enviable ballerina model that can also wear any hat on earth), the suit is perfect, as is her makeup, and she chose a lovely ‘mama bear’ shade of lipstick (< so many would've got that wrong).

  • She looks AMAZING!  Girl is werqing those lady-pants!!  And great to see her hair is still short – she really suits it! Thumbs up all around!

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t think I’ll get tired of her till she grows her hair out. (Possibly famous last words, right?).

Those shoes look wrong in January in the northern hemisphere, but otherwise I LOVE THIS. I prefer these style pants to the skin tight variety on virtually all persons of all genders in all situations, so that’s not a problem for me.

I’d call it darn close to a WERQ.

  • Kimbolina

I like the shoes on their own but not with this outfit.  They’re like… too minimalist for the outfit?  From the front view at least.  She’s so covered up that it just gives the illusion that she forgot to put on shoes and she’s walking around barefoot.  Love her hair though!

  • Winter_White

Please, darlings, enough of this ‘we’re sick of her’ stuff:  just let me enjoy for a little while longer the fact that my husband has finally stopped asking, “Who is Anne Hathaway, again?”   He’s figured it out at last, after years of having her name and face fail to stick together in his mind.  (I thought he had it after she was in Brokeback Mountain, but no.)  At least her recent publicity-overkill campaign began before I had to describe her to him as, “Mokiki’s wife.”)  😉

  • CatherineRhodes

I’m not sick of her, I adore her. She was very lively on Jon Stewart.

  • Although beautiful, those open-toed shoes are an odd choice for an outfit that covers every other inch of her. I love fitted blazers and Yves silk ties, so Anne is en pointe there (of course, that’s a very subjective thing to say). However, different-coloured pants would give this look some much-needed life!

  • guest2visits

She needed the model’s shoes. And the chic knot that Gwen Stefani used for the same blouse. But still pretty.

  • Whoa! I’m surprised that so much covered up dressing could look so fantastic, and it doesn’t  look pirate-y either.

  • MilaXX

I like, kinda Prince during the Purple Rain era.
Btw Michelle Williams was on Cougar Town w/ real life BFF last night. She looked really cute. Had her hair styled sort of like Miley Cyrus. She was so animated & fun. Would love to see that version of her on the RC

  • Lisa Dugan

Fabulous!  Love the all black look. Her hair and makeup look great.

  • Love it.  Love it all.

  • plinkiedoodle

Way past tired of this girl. Way past….

  • quiltrx

LOVE the outfit.  Skip the shoes.

  • Imasewsure

Love it all except for the shoes which seem to strappy for this awesome outfit…

  • silaria

I love this, and I love it on her.  I just wish she’d gone all the way and finished the look with a top hat.

  • She must have real good blood circulation. I am amazed that her toes are not ghastly white with a tint of purplish hue.

  • Lynn Landry

Don’t be hatin’ on her! I love that she has style and SHORT HAIR.

  • fursa_saida

Fact: Anne Hathaway pretty much always looks great in menswear-inspired clothes (check out stills from her turn as Viola in Shakespeare In The Park’s Twelfth Night sometime). Fact: This is like slightly Les-Mis-inspired androgyny. (Lace cuffs, waistcoat, cravat-like pussy bow.) Conclusion: I approve this message, but the nails are killing me.

  • xmixiex

this is FABULOUS and the way she’s growing her hair in is fierce.  there, a fabulous and a fierce in one sentence.

  • libraangel

Yes, Anne, we know you are in ‘Les Miz’: you don’t have to dress like a 19th century French aristocrat. And the shoes??!!! You are all covered up and then sandals? WRONG!

  • capybara_cafe

I don’t normally like what she turns up in, but I love this!
