WERQ: Lucy Liu in Roland Mouret

Posted on December 14, 2012

Miss Lucy is serving up FIERCE on a silver platter:

Lucy Liu attends the 32nd Annual Muse Awards for Vision and Achievement in a Roland Mouret dress paired with a cape coat and Dolce&Gabbana gloves.

“Yes, bitches. My cape coat is fabulous, isn’t it?”

“Oh, the bag, boots, and gloves? You’d like a picture of those as well? Of course you do.”

“Do you filthy little photographers want to see what I’ve got on underneath?”

“Suck it, hos. You can’t take my fabulousness.”

Roland Mouret ‘Maylie’ Crepe Dress

“I am SO FUCKING PLEASED with myself right now.”

As well you should be, Miss Lady! WERQ that shit!

I swear, she is not of this earth.

  • Sobaika

    Damn, Lucy.

    • She’s got a fantastic figure.  I’m mean I’m gay — gayer than thou, in fact — but I’m only human.

      • DeborahJozayt

Women are just majestic fucking creatures. We do that sometimes without even trying.

  • Sarah Dickerson

I don’t know.  Her attitude is certainly WERQ worthy, and that dress is pretty fabulous, but those boots look cheap and tacky to me and the color of that coat isn’t doing her any favors.

    • elirt

Agreed – the boots seem off to me – maybe it’s the shininess. If they were matte perhaps it wouldn’t look so plastick-y, thereby cheap.

      • maygoon

I think the boots are the wrong height for the hem line of that dress.  I’m imagining walking around in that and the hem constantly getting stuck in the stupid knee-flap.

        • I agree.  My first thought was that I just wanna take an inch or two off the height of those boots, and maybe a more natural leather finish.  Otherwise, fabulous look.  Or two fabulous looks.

        • momjamin

Oh please. She doesn’t “walk around.”

      • ankali

Maybe they’re also a bit too bulky? I think they’d work (actually, WERQ) if they were tighter around her calf. The rest of the ensemble makes me weep from its fabulosity, so it’s too bad she didn’t choose the right boot.

        • Sarah Dickerson

I agree.  The fit is weird, and I don’t think the shininess and texture go with the rest of her outfit.  Some boots that were fitted and matte would look divine.

        • H3ff

I don’t lovelovelove the boots with the coat, but they look FABULOUS with the simple white sheath. Talk about a stunning reveal.

    • I’m with you, the boots are not my taste, everything else looks pretty fabulous though.

    • totally agree.

    • FrayedMachine

Ditto. My issue is also the length of the dress versus the height of the boots. Kind of makes her look like a futuristic go-go dancer. A very gorgeous futuristic go-go dancer. But a go-go dancer none the less. I kind of hated it when she had the coat + gloves on. The coat was insanely cute but the gloves + boots completely killed it for me.

    • leilah

It’s the overworking of the leather with the crocodile embossing that creates the (unfortunate) extra shininess.  (Stuart Weitzman, $695)

  • nancylee61

One of the favorite ensembles I have seen on anyone in the past few years – period.

    • Mine, too!  Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, she takes off the coat and BAM indeed!

      • I kinda thought maybe she was gonna pull out a machine gun or at least a whip.  She is just fabulous.

  • lovelyivy

Love her, love the coat, love the dress, but the gloves AND bag AND boots feel like too much. Would be absolutely perfect if she had left one accessory at home.

    • l_c_ann

Problem is that the cape leaves her forearms exposed, so she needs the gloves.  Boots?  gotta cover her feet.  Bag?  everybody expects one.

If the cape coat were a different color, the black wouldn’t be such strong accents.

      •  I think this is a teeny bit off because of the sameness of the gloves and boots. (and for that matter, they both match her hair in black intensity)  I’d have used gloves that went just past the wrist.  And perhaps a different bag?  I’m not sure how–perhaps smaller, or with a subtle print, or maybe a different color?

Agreed that she has attitude and fashion fierceness in spades.  I’d love to have seen the strip tease that went along with taking off that coat.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She should be the guardian angel of the Bitter Kittens. Her and Cate Blanchett in that Givenchy gown.

    • Sobaika

Add Swinton and you have the trifecta.

      • DaringMiss

The Holy Trinity of Fierce Fashion!

    • julnyes

I would go with Mirren, Blanchett and Swinton for BK Patron Saints personally but Lucy Liu is fantastic.

      • H3ff

I love the great dame too, but Helen has been playing it veeery safe this past year. Membership in the Trifecta demands consistent displays of fierceness.

  • j_anson

Ha! I’m confident this exactly describes what she was thinking.

  • lehen

this is the perfect little winter getup.

  • Sarah Tyrchniewicz

LOL! I could picture this dialog exactly coming out of Ms. Liu’s mouth. She is awesome!

  • bittykitty

Tlo, I love you guys. Miss Lucy is looking spectacularly divine but your words are what bring it all to life for me. This made my morning

  • MarissaLG

I’m personally not a fan of the boots, but she really does look fierce.

  • Bowing down.

  • SewingSiren

She’s working it like she works on The Price is Right.

  • DTLAFamilies

Love the boots with the coat. Do not love the boots with the dress. Don’t you boys criticize MObama when she wears over-the-knee boots that touch her skirt hem?

  • Oooo barracuda!

  • Anne At Large

    As my grandmother would say:

    My Good Lord!

In the expletive-y way more so than the religious-y way.

  • Janet B

Lucy Liu, you are a gem.

  • Judy_J

    Yes, fierce as hell!

  • EEKstl

LOVE that dress, and nice juxtaposition with the more old-fashioned cape coat concept.

  • Holy shit. The gloves/boots/bag are a teeny bit matchy-cum-heavy, but still, DAMN. Such ferocity clearly drives me to profanity.

  • Jesus. She’s like a magical onion of fabulousness, just unwrap and uncover another ridiculously hot layer.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I will have to find a way to incorporate “onion of fabulousness” into my everyday vocab.

  • KatieKissinger

I love that she wore a coat!  I always find it odd to see starlets on the red carpet without a coat in the middle of winter- this is how it’s done!

  • stubbornthoughts

DAYUM. She looks better in that dress than the model! I have never wanted a cape coat more than right this second.

  • Qitkat

Roland Mouret makes the best solid color dresses.

And, Lucy Liu, you are my Swinton/Blanchett. Always classy and fierce.

  • twocee

    WERQ indeed.

  • Only related because it’s Ms. Liu, but her wardrobe on Elementary is to die for.

  • ChiliP

Miss Lucy! You fierce thing you! Love those boots with your white dress! Although I’m not completely sold on them with your cape-coat….but you’re still fabulous!

And I feel like this is a nice contrast to the dominatrix getup Anne Hathaway wore the other day. Anne had to overpose her face and body in a way that screamed “Look at me being DRAMATIC!” whereas Lucy just embodies that fierceness without getting all posey. She doesn’t have to resort to the same ridiculous levels of hands-on-hips, chin-arched-high, crazy-face look Anne was sporting. Just another reason why clothes have to be judged not only on their own merits, but the abilities of the wearer.

  • Monday1900

The first image is exactly what I think Helen Mirren should have worn in TLo’s last post about her (different color coat though).  Great look–especially love the gloves.

  • Carly Warnock

The boots are super tacky. Everything else is working like magic.

  • elleg929

Perfection from head to toe.  Wow.

  • Sara__B

She looks fabulous, and the gloves with that coat are sublime. Not quite a WERQ for me, though, because the color of the coat is too close to her skin color and almost invisible against all the black accessories.

  • Tatiana Luján

Not a werq from me. Boots that go higher than the dress make your legs look bad, either you are Lucy Liu or Michelle Obama. From the knees up, perfection.

  • warnerave

  • Love it. Every. single. stitch. And I totally love that she isn’t freezing her arse off for fashion.

  • Kristy Evans

I don’t like that the boots are taller than the hem of her skirt. It looks odd. But her attitude makes this. Next time I’m going out and I look really good, I’m going to repeat this in the mirror: “Suck it, hos. You can’t take my fabulousness.”

  • She looks great, and I heartily co-sign the WERQ, but my inner feminist just wonders: is making lady stars undress on the red carpet a thing now?  It’s not a big giant issue for me — she’s product-placed and so, like a NASCAR driver, she needs to show everything she’s wearing.  And it’s not like she’s doing a strip tease.  I understand all that, so I’m not rushing out to burn my bra or anything.  But I just wonder: are the boys being asked to take off clothing on the red carpet?

  • I really can’t sign off on a WERQ with those boots. I would have liked to see a sleek black or black patent, but the croc print is bugging.  I thought that fabulous coat WAS the dress and then BAM. She is a stunning woman.

  • TieDye64

    Insanely fabulous, top to bottom.

  • Judy_S

I love it all. She looks not only chic but festive. Delightful.

  • Imasewsure

I’m not really a coat person but I see the WERQness of it. That white dress and boots however…. BAM!! She is amazing…love her

  • Jackie4g

She ought to be pleased with herself. This lovely woman has cake walked into her forties. Bless her, she’s presented this outfit perfectly!

  • susan6

I don’t like any garment that is the color of old bras.  That coat would have been a WERQ if it were a different color.
Everything else about this look is awesome, though.

  • Le_Sigh

    Want those boots.

  • filmcricket

This is fantastic. I kind of wish the boots stopped at the knee instead of going over, but that’s a minor quibble. And this is just such a perfect combo of the kind of girly thing that she used to go in for quite often and the kind of FIERCENESS that IMO suits her much better.

  • marilyn

These colors (or lack thereof) don’t work with her skintone.  The boots don’t go with the white dress.  The boots say biker chick and the dresses  say Trisha Nixon. If the dresses had beenin better colors for her, it would have been great.   Her hair is kind of a mess too.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

I need those boots in my life.

  • BPlease

Freaking fantastic!  Dang, Lucy has fantastic taste.  Also – I love that she’s in a boot that’s more walkable/wearable than most of what we see on celebrities at big events.

I feel like she’s not aged in all her time as a well-known actress.  Genes?  Vats of moisturizer and SPF?  Good looking out.

  • I. Love. It. All.

  • She is gorgeous.

  • Indovina

I’m sorry, I just don’t know that I can sign off on “fierce” as a descriptor of that outfit.

The boots and gloves do not go, at all, with that cape-coat. While I can agree that the dress and boots might be “fierce”, the retro-inspired cape-coat with buttons that look like flowers is, but for the grace of God and the color beige, bordering on “I love ponies, and unicorns, and rainbows” territory. And yet, somehow matronly also.

Her outfit manages to be fierce, twee, and matronly all at once. I did not know the technology to produce that existed.

  • Oh dear god, the gloves! I’m swooning.

  • formerlyAnon

HOT DAMN. She should be buried in that beige coat.

  • Introspective

girl this IS your look. and its also mine. and its fucking fab. werq indeed

  • My God, I want that coat so hard. How did I not know cape-coats were a thing until just now?

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i want to see her in a staring / glaring / side eye contest with salma hayek.

  • TSkot

Boots OR gloves; one or the other, Sweetie.

  • neofashionista

    Absolutely Fabulous

  • Love her, love her show. Somebody’s having a moment!

  • Cynica

I WANT IT ALL.  I, a straight woman, gay-gasped when I saw this.

  • I don’t think the tan color really flatters her skin tone, but one cannot deny the fabulousness of the ensemble, or the fierceness of the wearer.

  • Fabulous from head to toe!

  • Killa!

  • Does this mean it’s okay sometimes to have the tops of your boots be covered by your dress hem?  Because I personally really want to hear that that’s the case.  Not that I’ve ever done such a thing.  *slinking away ashamedly*

  • minnye

Everything looks really well balanced (& totally fierce) with the coat on. She’s so stylish but doesn’t seem snooty about it, if that makes any sense. Love her poses.

  • MilaXX

BAM! Ms. Lucy shut it down!

  • shawnhunter

god this is all so ridiculously fabulous TOO MUCH FIERCE FOR THIS EARTH

  • par3182

The 32nd Annual Muse Awards for Vision and Achievement is almost as awkward as the 1st Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence (but nowhere near as funny)

  • Zippypie

I may not care for Ms. Lucy as an actress but man, this chick knows how to dress.  WERQ it!

  • bertkeeter

No likey boots! No likey gloves! Dress n coat nice!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Not in love with the boots, but I bow down in Lucy devotion to the perfection of the rest of the outfit.

  • DAY-UM! Perfection!! Well done!

  • alyce1213

That coat is just so, so fashionable. The features are perfect — capelet, no sleeves (requiring gloves!), buttons, pockets, skirt.  I just love it.

  • crash1212

WERQ indeed. That’s pure fabulousness – tip to toe.

  • justice3003

What the F. She takes off a jacket and overskirt?

  • glennethph

    Double WERQ!

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    Over-the-top fierceness! Love it.

  • pookiesmom

how is she so gorgeous. i can’t even.

  • nannypoo

She really knows how to present herself, doesn’t she? This is really a beautiful outfit.

That show she’s on this year is so bad I can’t believe they haven’t cancelled it, but I’m sure that’s not her fault.

  •  Can she do NO wrong!?!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Well done, Ms. Liu-I bow to your fierce fabulosity!

  • Alice Tram

    I d

  • boweryboy

The cape coat is hideous and the boots are very chunky, but I love everything else.

  • DeTrop

Daytime couture. Yeah!  (Missing Jackie O these days).  Very few dress nicely head to toe,  anymore for daytime.

  • littlemissstrange

God, TLo, I can’t take your hilariousness. Nor can I take her fabulousness. You guys should follow her around and narrate her life. I WILL PAY YOU FOR THIS THING.

  • spooki C

love the gloves, hate everything else but Lucy still looks good. she’s just one of those people that have a “glow” about them and never really look bad even when dressed poorly.

  • decormaven

Thank you, fashion gods, for a moment like this. Utter perfection.

  • librarygrrl64

I am not crazy about those *particular* boots, but she is totally WERQ worthy. 🙂

  • guest2visits

I can think of other boots that I like better, but combined with the coat, the gloves and all – these work fine.
She looks fantastic, with or without the coat.

  • ccm800

dayum. No gimmick. No Whoring. Just fierce. And that will always win.

  • AnnPopovic

Sherlock Holmes…get it? Do you get it? HEY! I’m in a new show — guess what it’s called!!!

But we’ll let it slide, right? ‘Cause it’s a REALLY good show and she’s adorable, in the show, in reality and yes, in that outfit.

  • marigi

I love you TLo, but it seems to me that your WERQs are for the most part praising very conservative looks. Even when the gown is super-sexy it’s always quite a simple ensemble, when you really look at it. Considering how you encourage more risky looks when commenting a red carpet or other, your WERQ posts are sometimes contradictory.
I find the color of this coat terrible, and the hemming cheap for a coat. The dress is ok, but could be a Banana Republic off the rack. She looks ok, but not great.

  • RzYoung

  • Jenny Bee

desert your own line of talent. Be what nature intended you for, and you
will succeed; be anything else, and you will be ten thousands times
    worse than nothing.

  • veronkimo

  • She’s a doll!! That’s why her boots are kind of cheap and shiny — this is a Barbie ensemble, y’all! That’s also why she’s so perfectly perfect you want to burst into applause.

  • Lucy Liu comes in 3 settings: competent lawyer, erotic assassin, and icy dominatrix.

  • momogus

Seriously? I don’t like anything about this look at all. The boots are too heavy. The gloves are too heavy. The coat is matronly. The dress is gorgeous, but the boots are completely distracting.

  • Fabulous and I want that cape coat!

  • I love Lucy Liu! Always fabulous!

  • bitterk

    Now that is a WERQ

  • carpediva

I love the unexpected juxtaposition of the dress under that coat. I also think the coat on its own is insanely fabulous, but the matchy gloves, boots, purse combo of the initial look makes her kind of look like a Scotland Yard super hero.

On an unrelated note? That model is just BEYOND gorgeous. Work it, (my dark-skinned) sister.

  • I saw the beige in the preview pic and wondered how anything in that color could possibly be a WERQ. But no, I completely agree. That shit if fierce!
