WERQ: Anne Hathaway in Givenchy Couture

Posted on December 06, 2012

Miss Annie may have disappointed us with her style choices during the pre-opening poledance, but once it was time to hit that premiere red carpet…

Anne Hathaway attends the world premiere of ‘Les Misérables’ in London in a Givenchy couture gown.

Givenchy Spring 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Kati Nescher (VIVA)

Givenchy Spring 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Kati Nescher (VIVA)

… BAM.

This continues her recent trend of wearing unusual dresses and gowns, but this one has such high impact and such a glam factor to it, that its oddness doesn’t even scan. Yeah, the sleeves are weird and heavy-looking, but it doesn’t matter. Bitch is a high-fashion Christmas Angel Diva and she’s here to let you all know her movie is opening and she expects applaud and awards for it. You WERQ that statement-making frock, girl.

I think the dress is hideous and the fabric looks cheap

      • Funkykatt

I agree. It reminds me of a bedspread my parents bought for me from Brueners back in the late 60s. I hated it then and I would feel the same way now.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000172512508 Emerald Storm

I was just thinking it looked like my mom’s old bedspread. I prefer the blue dress with the pom poms to this fabric abomination! The draping is pretty though.

          • DeborahJozayt

The draping looks beautiful in certain shots, like when she’s signing autographs. With her hands on hips, she’s   the AARP Flying Squirrel.

          • Alisa Rivera

I also prefer the blue dress. Gorgeous color, it draped beautifully and the pom poms didn’t offend me.

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Right!  Chenille!  I hadn’t thought about that in years.

        • judybrowni

          Hobnail bedspread bondage.

          Still, she’s gorgeous init.

      • DeborahJozayt

I thought I was alone in that regard. It’s like a Versace hospital gown.

      • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

She could carry home a week’s grocery shopping in those saggy sleeves.

      • Vickiefantastico

I’m so glad I’m not the only one. It’s rare when I run across a dress that I truly hate. You’re right, the fabric looks cheap like an old bedspread at my grandmother’s house. Also, I see that a lot of people love the draping, but I think it looks sloppy and overdone. I don’t know what you call that ridiculous circle that looks like a shower curtain ring, but it’s too heavy and looks a bit S& M for some reason, maybe due to where it sits on her neck. I also don’t like the weird dots running down the front of the dress or the fact that it’s back-less. In short, I can’t stand a single thing about the dress.

However, I will hand it to her – she’s got attitude to the max!

      • AnaRoW

I disagree. The fabric looks hideous and expensive.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TFDDXGYWAUZBM4M5MJIINUHWBA Martha

      So smooth and poured on.

    • http://www.facebook.com/JennaM.Olson Jenna Olson

I’m just pretending I don’t see the kitschy nails so I can agree completely.  Ignoring those, lady is working it.

      • lizlemonglasses

        and the little bracelets.

        • filmcricket

The bracelets are particularly egregious. But yeah, the manicure’s not good, either, it looks like she’s got silvery dirt under her nails.

      • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

Oh god, I hadn’t seen the nails. Now that’s all I can see.

      • ccinnc

… and trying to ignore the uni-boob.

    • Dhammadina

I LOVE “High Fashion Christmas Angel.”

    • lehen

the dress is fugly.  it’s her attitude that makes this werq-worthy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183939371 Carla Gonzalez Burkhard

I agree!  I really don’t like the dress at all- what is with the ruffle running right down her rump?  And the sleeves?  Looks like she caught a bunch of fabric up in a shower curtain ring at her neck and ran out the door.  But her attitude and hair and makeup are amazing, so I guess that’s what elevates this look.

        • Lori

That ass-crack ruffle is just odd I mean really, there should never be an occasion to type the words “ass-cracl” and “ruffle” together. That makes her attitude while wearing this dress pretty impressive. She knows that ruffle is back there and she’s still working it. I give her major points for that alone.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VA5XLSF3QRELSC3MUFSXLP4EIE rebecca

Exactly! I was all set to love it, because I tend to agree with TLo, but not this time. It reminds me of those white bedspreads from my childhood. She works it like nothing else, but that cannot hide the hideousness of this get-up.

    • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

I love when WREQ and WERQ collide and give us something like this.

      • Chickadeep

I think this may in fact be the most polarizing WERQ evah!

        • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

You want opinions. Not indifference.  I just hope that Tom and Lorenzo consider a best and controversial list of the year. This freakum dress might be a contender for the second list.

    • bluefish

Not a fan of the upper half of the dress.  She looks like a chicken cutlet gone awry — way too much going on.  Pretty from the back but confusing as hell from the front.  And the manicure?  No!  Like the haircut on her and that she had the good sense to not wear earrings.  It is an interesting fabric just wish it weren’t so complicated above the waist.  What it’s doing to her very pretty armpits is odd.

    • Chickadeep

      Holy crap. Full-on MOVIE. STAR.

      • christopherlally

        Holy Schmitd.

      • formerlyAnon

Exactly.  Of course it is too much as a gown for the holiday party. But for a Movie Star on the red carpet? Perfecto.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

I can’t STAND the shower curtain ring neckline. Stripper-wrestler couture.

The after-party Altuzarra was WAY better.

    • TRSTL

“Hello! I am a movie star with a slammin’ figure.”

    • http://twitter.com/Alyssa_T_Robot Alyssa T. Robot

over the shoulder pose for the win! get it gurl!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

DAMN the bitch nailed it! INNNNNNNN!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

I realize it her ATTITUDE that is carrying this outfit (not the sagging sail boat sheets/ropes profect feel)

    • http://twitter.com/iJenmac Jennifer McClory

I can’t imagine sitting down in it for a movie (her backside was probably covered with little red indentions by the end of the night), but she looks great.

      • LargeEventPlanner

Sitting down in that gown was the first thing I thought about. I bet poor Anne had a sore derrière at the end of the event.

    • charlotte

I’m sorry, but this dress is a WREQ to me. It looks like it is 100% polyester and I hate it with a passion.

      • Tatiana Luján

I, instead think the fabric looks awsome, like it had some silk in it. Maybe the way the pictures look changes depending on the computer

        • http://twitter.com/thimblethom Christianthomas

This dress probably doesn’t have anything but silk in it fabric-wise

      • Corsetmaker

Looks like silk satin to me, there’s a gleam you only get from silk. Plus it’s couture, so logic suggests polyester is… unlikely.  But then whenever there’s a silk satin dress on here someone will say it looks cheap :/ I think the fabric is stunning.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Um… she is working it, that’s true.  But, I don’t love this – the dress is cray cray and her posing – with the head flung back?  I’m not getting the werq vibe all the way.  With just these shots, it seems she doesn’t know quite what to do with her arms.  She’s a little stuck.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Hand/34501967 Laura Hand

      I hate it.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Boy it sure is a statement. I love the way it looks from the back. I simultaneously love and hate the fabric. She is definitely werqing it that is for sure.

    • GorgeousThings

The back is beautiful, but the front, unless she keeps her hands on her hips, is drab and shapeless.

    • Unkempt

It reminds me of Erte. But keeping your arms akimbo all night could be tiring.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Anne is working the hell out of that gown, but as much as I’d like to love it I don’t. The sleeves and the neckline are just bringing that dress down.

    • GorgeousThings

BTW, What is going on with the silver binky on the model?

      • StillGary

ha GT! – I thought pacifier too!

      • decormaven

Looks like a bejeweled bondage device, which gives me the creeps.

        • LLuL

Totally creepy. I wasn’t going to go there but I can’t help myself- My first thought was that her mouth looks like a bedazzled bunghole.

      • BrooklynBomber

        “silver binky” –haha!
I think I recall TLo showing this collection, and all the models had these. Google “Givenchy couture 2012″ and you’ll see pictures. They’re big nose rings. Very creepy-looking.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I prefer it from the back, even with the dorsal fin. The front is just over-designed to me, the spikes on the curtain ring are a step too far. On the other hand, why don’t the bridal collections ever produce anything this interesting?

    • lizlemonglasses

I still feel like she’s too young to look this Liza.

    • schadenfreudelicious

face, hair, body..amazing… dress..i just cant, it’s too overwrought, plus she has a butt crack ruffle…

    • http://twitter.com/maggie162 Maggie

A WERQ attitude, but a disaster dress.  Agreed with the cheap descriptors.  The arm thing is just bizarre and the ruffle-butt is a big honking NO.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

The dress is far more impressive from the back than from the front.   The most impressive thing about the front photos is her face, which is radiating megawatts of attitude–so many that her fierce visage is almost managing to make me not notice how freakin’ ugly the front of that dress really is.  Almost.

    • spooki C

Horrible. This is the kind of dress that only looks good if you stand still with your arms down. The heavy, droopy fabric makes it look like some ugly robe is falling off her.

    • mjude

      BAM indeed!

    • afabulous50

STUNNING…despite what some other bitter kittens posted…

    • StillGary

I wanted to like this — but it reminds me of clothes falling off the hanger — all that batwing material is distracting but her butt looks great!

    • Lisa Tyre

More Chenille than Channel if you ask me.

    • Introspective

I love the attitude. and the fit is to die. the sleeve stuff is wonky but she’s rocking it.

but I crave some earrings for this look. something understated for sure given all the jewelry in the dress, but a bare ear is a problem for a premiere, especially when she has short hair too…

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Jeebus Heironimous Kreyeste!  She has got full blown Movie Diva going on.

      • formerlyAnon

Exactly. I’d never have thought 5 years ago that that was going to be her metier, but apparently I must re-think.

      • http://twitter.com/anywhoo Leigh David

Totally, “Holy Blackgama!” What becomes a legend most!

    • TAGinMO

I’m stunned at the outpouring of hate for this dress in the previous comments. Sure, it’s unusual, high-degree-of-difficulty, and certainly not for everyone. And generally speaking, I’m sort of lukewarm when it comes to Anne Hathaway. But there’s no question that this is HER dress and she is WERQing it like it owes her 6 months’ back-rent.

In a way, it’s sort of a Swinton moment; a weird dress that would look ridiculous on most anyone else is striking on her due to sheer force of will and personality.I WOULD like to see her in an arms-down pose, though. While the arms-akimbo pose is obviously going to show off the dress to best effect, I like the model shots, too.

    • http://www.katidom.com/ Kati B

I wish she’d gone for a deeper red lippy. That dress looks heavy as crap. I imagine her taking it off and being all, “Phew! Thank god that thing is off!”

    • kelsita421

did anyone else watch the live stream of this red carpet while they were supposed to be working? poor girl kept tugging at those sleeves to keep them up… but once she got them placed just so, she sold it.  the ‘tude is definitely what makes it werq!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/57DSN5XCR5VONZ2JUMQ5M6EF54 Sabrina

yes, i was gonna say just that.  But I also have to say, she smiled the entire time.  I know they are very well paid, but they really have to be ON during that red carpet.  We bitches are ruthless, after all. They all did a pretty good job of giving the face the public demands.  I cannot WAIT for this film  :-)

    • B_C_J

The dress is a work of art and she looks like a work of art in it.  Of course, this is a dress made for exactly this sort of occasion – a world premiere. It’s not designed for comfort nor practicality.  Nonetheless she looks amazing.

    • RzYoung

I love this, she looks stunning (and cold! It was -3 in London last night..!) and I love that she’s keeping the short hair, I was convinced she would get extension or grow it straight out but she’s keeping it short. All good

    • formerlyAnon

WERQ for me. Especially from the back. And because her hair is already sleek and chic, I’m not sitting here whining about how she really should have gone for an updo.

    • miagain

      I dislike more than I like…

    • Jecca2244

i want to see this fabric up close. You can tell she loves it and feels great in it. and as a lady I know thats half the battle.

    • leslied11

Maybe, just maybe if she’d posed like the model did – I just can’t with the arms.  Also, her. Just can’t with her. #IrrationalDislike

    • jw_ny

It’s totally a WOW dress…at 1st appearance.  2nd look…kind of ugly, especially the ruffled back.  XD  She’s werq’in the shit out of it tho.  The real drama in it is the sleeves with hands on hips.  I imagine it’d get tiring walking/posing like that all evening.  ;)

    • Crystal

She’s been favoring those types of necklines lately. Maybe because of the short hair?

    • crackineggs

      Dress of one thousand nipples.

      • DeborahJozayt

        The dress is freezing,too!

    • http://twitter.com/TinRoofPress Tin Roof Press

ew – seriously? BAM for this?

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I would dig it 100% without all of the little pearls? beads? That’s plenty of dress without needing to add that much detail to the fabric.

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

This dress consumes her from the front and therefore I am not a fan; however, it is divine in the back.  If it had been more simple and clean in the front, I think it would have made her look less like a dowager duchess.  And what is with the “down my nose at you minions” posing?  That is not typical Anne and I am not feelin that.

    • Tatiana Luján

I want to sew the sleeves to the strap over the shouders. Looooove the fabric and the buttons on the front of the dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The lack of editing on this dress is sad. The huge sleeves (which had she had her arms down like the model may have acutally looked better), the butt crack ruffle, the rhinestones down the front and across the waist, the ring around the neck with…are those spikes?  Had they reigned it in some this dress would have been stunning. The only reason it is eeking in a WERQ is because Anne here is working the shit out of it. Kudos You Christmas Angel Diva.

    • Little_Olive

I am not crazy about the way they solved the chest, i.e., that ring thing. But damn if she can wear that dress -and probably she alone.

A bit of an earring also?

    • MarissaLG

I’m SHOCKED that they went with this. I’m sure they have been working on what dress she was going to wear to this premier for a long time, and she has her pick of every dress ever, and I jut can’t believe this was the best choice. Yes, she is shutting it down. Yes, her body looks amazing. Yes, she looks like a Movie Star. But.. this is such a weird dress and it’s so distracting. The dress is wearing her and I just don’t get why they went with this.

    • NCDFan

I’m betting that she practiced in front of a mirror until she found the ‘best’ pose in that dress. The model’s picture makes it look like the dress is falling off of her and does nothing for her figure. Anne is doing her best to take that droopy dress and make it shine. I’m betting that in motion the thing glittered too. The WERQ is for Anne not the dress.

      • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

There’s something striking about how it draped on the model, though. I wish Anne had gone full cray and worn the neckpiece, since she just took such an editorial piece out of a ton of editors’ hands.

    • tresfabuleux

That first photo screams, “I’m here to pick up my Oscar, bitches.” And I kind of love her for that. She was AMAZING in Les Miz! The whole movie was fantastic.

    • http://twitter.com/BookcaseHat Emily

      Ew, really, TLo? Blech.

    • RebeccaKW

I like it.  It’s a dress I should hate, but I think it looks good on her, plus she has attitude.  Sexy w/o moving into slutty.  I’m sure it’s uncomfortable as hell to sit in, but that’s not the point.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      DAYUM. She looks stunning.

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Yeah, Anne is totally carrying that dress. Everything weird about it is highlighted by the model.

    • Judy_J

Werqing that old school Hollywood glam…..and knocking it out of the park!

    • mmc2315

I don’t love the dress, but I’ll grant you this, she is wearing the hell out of it, and that makes the whole look.

    • Janet B

“I Am a Movie Star.”  Stunning RC dress.

    • Lisa Salmon

I hate the macrame neck strap thing. Her hair is very cute tho.

    • BrooklynBomber

Hmm….not loving it. I appreciate how different it is, texture- and silhouette-wise, but somehow it’s not quite “aesthetically pleasing.”

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

There is just so much going on with this dress, but she’s making it WERQ for her.

    • siena Mystic

That is killer. Head to toe killer. Insanely fabulous.

    • tallgirl1204

It is gorgeous.  But is it just me that thinks she’s posing with her hands on her waist to hide the fact that the dress doesn’t flow well there?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

The fabric has an upholstery quality, but she looks great.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

It would suck to have to put your hands on your hips all evening to werk a gown.
My grandmother had a bumpy bead spread that looked like this.
Do you think the ring on the neck line is just plastic wrapped in fabric with faux diamonds globbed on?
      OK enough…I hate it!

    • fringebenefit

    • nicole seligman

is this not the same W neckline as her hidy dress from the last post?

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

You guys gave this a werq? Nooooo.

    • Cathy S

I don’t like it. It looks like one of those bedspreads with the fluffy dots all over it–what the hell is that called? But I have to admit her shoulders and back are very nice and she should show them off more often.

    • http://theondioline.wordpress.com/ Ondioline

So ugly that one must go beyond the dictionary to fully describe its aesthetic assault.

    • Srw27

Not loving the front, but BA BAM, the back is fab!

    • SewingSiren

I absolutely agree. I think this dress is beyond beyond. I LOVE it on her. Are you ready for your Oscar Anne? Yes, I do believe I am.

    • procrastinatrice

I think that dress having an autoimmune response to its own ugliness. Hence the unsightly bumps all over. And the wings from the body to the sleeves are cancerous growths.
Kudos to her for summoning up the attitude to sell such a cheap-looking, ugly thing.

    • FrayedMachine

Oh my god she looks absolutely gorgeous in this. it looks like they dipped her in a vat of fabric, it sits on her so well.

    • crash1212

And she KNOWS it! She looks fabulous…such an odd dress, but she is most def making it WERQ.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1069083922 Brady Galan

Is this Werq an April Fool’s joke?!  That dress is all kinds of 80s Grand Ole Opry hiddy!

    • ecallaw1977

I am SO close to loving it, but it is so weird in the bust that I just can’t.  It’s smooshing her boobs down to where you can’t even tell where they begin.  I like the drama of it and her attitide, but I just don’t think it’s flattering

      • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

I’m dazzled, but I see what you mean about the boob-squish. It’s probably a very heavy garment and would need a steel-reinforced bra to keep that from happening to real boobs. On fake boobs it would probably sit fine. Her caboose looks spectacular, however.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I love her slightly grown out hair and I can’t think of anyone who could make this dress shine, like she is here. Everything here is working for me.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The back is just stunning.  But I have to wonder if she can sit comfortably in that gown.

    • Scott Isaacs

This looks like something Fantine or even Cosette would wear to a red carpet event, were she swimming in money. In other words, absolutely perfect for the event.

    • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

1920s GLAM x 1000. Probably one of three people on the planet who could pull this off. This is an Icon making moment.

    • bertkeeter

Stunning dress…could have done with out the line of faux bottons on front and that odd organic looking ruffle down her ass? Has a bit of Versace in the neck hardwafre in the front!

    • Miss_Led

The back looks great! But the front is too weird to be a WERQ.
Unless it is “Weird Except for the Rear Quadrant.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

It looks like a bedspread I once picked up at a flea market and it has ball fringe on the sleeves, weren’t you guys just complaining about that yesterday?  I do like the back, however.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

The bigger crystals going down the front remind me of Rachel Summers’s spikey Phoenix costume. Like this is something she’d where when going to a swanky gala, and she borrowed the idea of Shadowcat’s poofy sleeves. Meanwhile Captain Britain is somewhere glowering and drunk. #nerd
I like it. But the dress needed some edits in the design process, yes.

    • chris

You guys were nailing her for having little balls dangling off her sleeves yesterday. This dress has HUNDREDS of little balls all over it! WREQ.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

It never makes sense to us when people compare two dresses that look nothing alike in an attempt to prove that we’re not being consistent somehow. This dress is beaded, which is not at all the same thing as ball fringe.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

Serving up Liza. But Annie’s becoming too much of a diva in her Hunger For an Oscar Games. Smugness doth not become a lady.

    • MissAnnieRN

It’s interesting, because this gown tends to provoke very strong reactions from people, judging by the comments here and what others around the web have said about it.  I happen to love it.  Though I will say that “Fashion as Art” is doing it’s job if it’s getting those kinds of responses from people.  I think the worst thing that could be said about an outfit is “meh…”  “I hate it!!!!!!1111one!” at least provoking an emotion, even if it’s the wrong one.

    • WittyCism

Been so busy these past few days; December though she never means to be, can be such a bitch.  But thank you TLo for this.  It was Fashion.  It was Hollywood.  Loved it!

    • PeggyOC

She’s selling it like hell, but I’m not really buying.

Ba-BAM! Love this. She looks amazing.

Yes, I was just going to say that! One moment I’m seeing Erte and it’s all 1920s fabulous (sorta), and the next moment I’m seeing Liza-with-a-Z.

    • shopgirl716

I love it.  Wish she’d keep her hair short.  It suits her.

    • stubbornthoughts

I actually gave an audible, “Oh wow” of admiration the farther I scrolled. That dresses bodice and design is remarkable and Anne is taking full advantage. She looks amazing!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

      Wow. Love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

Is it wrong that I now want to sew dorsal fins into every outfit I own? I’m kind of digging her look here.

    • warnerave

      WERQ!!! Amazing!

    • zelavie

Gorgeous for the RC – but this has to be a no-sitting gown.  After about 10 minutes, there would be bead divots all over the tush and thighs!  Looks painful on that front.

    • alyce1213

I utterly despise this dress. It’s overdone, the design is tacky and unedited.
For starters, the fabric looks like an unfortunate dermatological condition, and then:
      – that neckline with the ring
      – the sleeves
      – her boobs ?
      – an ASS TAIL ???
There’s just TOO MUCH nonsense going on all over, just hideous.
I don’t care how pleased she looks with herself, this is the pits. (And I normally love Givenchy — I’m shocked.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/jody.corbett Jody Corbett

Hideous. That dress looks covered in smallpox and has this whole “webbed arms attached to my body I can’t really move” thing going on. Nope.

    • kimmeister

It’s certainly a striking dress, but it’s totally her pose that’s selling it.  I think it would look better if she didn’t have her shoulders pushed forward though – the dress looks better with angular shoulders, which she clearly has, but you can’t really tell here.

    • EEKstl

Those sleeves are cray cray but she is pulling it off (mostly on attitude alone) and looks fabulous.  Great hair and the no earring choice was wise.

    • MilaXX

Total Monet of dress. As ugly  I think the dress is, Anne is werq’ing it so hard I ant to think it’ s pretty

    • elleg929

      Sorry boys, it’s hideous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

The kittens are out in force to decry this look, but I absolutely love it. I think it’s glamorous and interesting to look at, but not so interesting that the dress is wearing her rather than the other way around. This is Fashion with a capital-F, and like a lot of fascinating art, won’t have universal appeal. It speaks to *me*, anyway!

    • ShayShay

This dress is BOMB!!!!!!!  Luvs it.  Bow down to Queen Anne mere peasants.

    • Imasewsure

I love the fabric, the drape, etc. but would have preferred it without the sleeves. But of course it would have been much more conventional so therefore less fabulous… it’s a WERQ

    • Maluca

I don’t like it. It looks like her arms are melting.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

It is couture, but the pose is ruining it!

    • http://twitter.com/celeriac _____ 3e Roi de Noël

She has a “Medieval Warrior Princess” vibe going on with both this look and the blue dress that you hated yesterday. Best red carpet theme ever.

    • BeeBeauNYC

The oddness of it certainly scans with me. The fabric hanging in front of the shoulders just doesn’t work for me.

    • SapphoPoet

She’s definitely WERQ-ing this; her attitude is saving the dress. The fabric reminds me of a wedding cake–the kind with that really smooth fondant icing with the little dots all over it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/poyznelf.thompson Poyznelf Thompson

That right there is FABULOUS, the model looks all wrong, but on Anne, perfection!

    • Jennifer Coleman

My brain is having a huge argument with itself on whether this dress is fabulous or ridiculous, but she is serving up some diva-star realness in it. The back is the best view. I wonder if she had to go around with her hands on her hips all night because the impact of the dress falls off dramatically in any other pose.

    • Roosevelt 85

I think she must read TLo because this is full on Liza with a Z showmanship. None of that Michelle Williams “Aren’t I Twee?” crap.

    • marilyn

If she is going to go for ultra-glam looks, she needs to step up her makeup.  He face fades away in this picture.

    • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

Here attitude is what makes her look great. The dress, however, is rather ugly.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

      I’m a movie stah, dahling.

Love that she broke out the Givenchy with her Audrey-‘do.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

anyone else see the photo of her in this dress with amanda in the cha cha?  the side-eye could KILL, i’m saying.

    • RocknRollmom

WOW!  Fabulous, glam, and art.  Without attitude and hair cut, this dress would be hideous on most.  Anne owns this.  Good for her.

    • greyhoundgirl

What?  No gem-encrusted lips on Annie?!  I’m kind of loving this on her–not too many could pull it off with those sleeves but she does.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i think actually that’s all part of the ring hanging from her nose, no?  and the model (ms. kati nescher) will definitely be receiving the award for hugest earrings ever.

    • MissAmynae

      Haaaaaaatttteeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Sorry guys.

    • SpillinTea

She is serving us “GIVE ME MY OSCAR, BITCHES!!!” and I am living for it. WERK!!!!

    • thecitysleeps

I should hate this dress but it looks like poured on liquid perfection on her.

    • Tamara Hogan

      WERQING OVERTIME. Beautiful.

    • PrunellaV

      The back is breathtaking.

    • Corsetmaker

Fabulous! That luscious fabric is fluid and just the right weight to follow her form. The beading emphasises the shaping and the draped sleeves are knockout. The little spiked neckpiece stops it looking bridal. And it works on her, it isn’t dominating her at all and that’s an achievement in itself.

I love it, but I suppose I can understand how it would fail to appeal to the more conservative. However I’m sure Jennifer Aniston will be along soon ;D

    • lrober03

I love it, I’m just concerned that the whole effect is lost when she needs to use her arms for something other than sassily putting her hands on her hips.

    • e jerry powell

    • LeifBallard

      WOW!! Amazing!

    • Robert Montano

I think that fabric looks like a plucked chicken.

    • ojosazules

Old school glam. Dress is very weird but I love it on her.

    • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

Clingy chenille bedspread redeemed by FABULOUS diva posing! The shape of the dress is stunning and Anne obviously loves it (I’d love to see what happens when she takes her hands off her hips). But that fabric is distractingly ugly.

    • http://www.nahuli.blogspot.com cjcris23

Ew. No.  I usually agree with you guys, but wow, no.  This is awful.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QYNAGYILEHAIYAZP2BEIPGJJIQ Cindy

Makes her hips look huge!  And it looks like a bedspread my grandmother once had.  She’s too young to wear that.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Hell I’ll give her an Oscar for owning the fuck out of this otherwise questionable look.  Go get it, girl.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

      wow, what a look.
only nitpick: i dont think thats the ideal hair for this gown. but its the hair shes got right now, and it doesnt look bad, either.

    • bluefish

This dress and actress combo have been bugging me almost all day now.  Maybe just me but AH brings with her a real Liza M. vibe.  Multi-talented, occasionally annoying, great body, a big featured face that goes beyond being just pretty.  She’s a pretty potent package all around.  This dress, shades of Hello Dolly and Ethel Merman, is just TOO much on someone who is already too much.  She should take some tips from Liza back in the day and look for sleeker stuff — Halston, YSL — these days Armani and Donna Karan.  The dress also ages her and unfortunately brings to mind the disastrous Academy Awards event.  I know, I know, she did all the heavy lifting and deserves thanks and praise, etc, but I found her annoying as hell.  I saw her again this past weekend in Rachel Getting Married.  A flawed but powerful movie — AH can act and has a beyond commanding presence but the Gilded Age look doesn’t do her any favors.

    • glennethph

NOPE.  Those sleeves make her look like she has sagging arms.

    • tereliz

LOVE it unreservedly. Even the weird but-ruffle kind of works. How much you think that sucker weighs?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1047749944 Katherine Pavlica

The dress is meticulously cut and makes her look fantastic.  The fabric is too heavy (IMO) to do this sort of drape for the sleeves, but it’s a forgivable offense.  However, I LOVE the way she is rocking her pixie!!  I loathed it when she first got it, but now she’s giving it attitude.  So many celebs go super short, only to grow it back without any regard to the in between stage.

    • Pterodactyl111

I would like it a lot more without all the little studs. Also, I don’t like her nails. Great shape though.

    • littlemac8

I detest this dress!  Her back and ass look great in the last shot but I hate, hate, hate the sleeve treatment with all my heart!

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

By all logic, I should really hate this gown. But on her in this setting it looks fabulous. Glamah!

    • barbarienne

I don’t like the line of decorative thingies (buttons? They aren’t fastening anything) down the middle. But I admit that is just my idiosyncratic hatred of buttons in general (yes, it’s weird; I am aware of this).

Otherwise, I LOVE this and completely agree with the declaration of WERQ. She’s posing like an Erté girl. All she needs is an elaborate headdress.

    • SophieCollier

Very Erté, especially from the back.

    • Allison Woods

      I cannot abide.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

I absolutely LOVE this (had to throw my opinion in!)

    • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

Jaw. Dropper. She looks amazing and more importantly like such a confident HBIC. That is some old-school Hollywood icon confidence she’s exuding.

      Love her so much.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

The dress is absolument hideux. Fabric, shape… Please Goddess, let that movie go home without a single Oscar or at least without a best supporting actress Oscar.

    • CarolinLA

I just saw AH give a quick interview where she said that her mother played the role of Fantine in the first national company of Les Mis.  I’m sure her mom is thrilled to see her kid follow in her footsteps in such a big way.  I can hardly wait for the movie to open.  The clips make it look fantastic!

    • Jackie4g

Doesn’t she have to sit down and watch a movie?  Ho can a person sit in that thing? Also, I hope she’s got  a wrap stashed somewhere.

    • librarygrrl64

Sorry, I just can’t get behind this one.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314255041 Irina Ryabchuk

This gave me goosebumps, so definitely a WERQ – even if it looks like she has HUGE goosebumps herself. All in the attitude it is.

    • neofashionista

to me this is a GIRL that NOT your dress POST

    • sweet_potato

Sometimes Miss Anne gets on my nerves but this look, Damn! Fabulous, I love it.  Divatastic WERQ

    • quiltrx

WOW.  Very old-school Hollywood glamour.  I like it.

    • guest2visits

I love the dotted pearls/crystals of the material, and the back looks wonderful on her; but the heavily weighted arms really
detract from the design for me. So much material it ruins the proportion and makes a huge curtain valance out of the top.
      Yes, odd looking.

    • ccm800

Put  your arms down darling  you’re not a super hero and  you’re kinda showing how NOT to wear the dress. Look  how  GORGEOUS it looks in repose.

    • Qitkat

That last photograph is FABULOUS OLD-SCHOOL GLAM.

    • Zippypie

I hate the exaggerated batwing arms.  It makes this dress look so incredibly heavy and weighted, like drapes, and drapes that are about to fall off.  Otherwise, it would be retro gorgeous.  Shame.

    • Sadie-Ann

I can’t even tell what I think about this dress because I am so distracted by the way she is standing. I’m getting a weird Soap Opera Diva vibe from it.

    • ZnSD

LOL whatever. I love me some Hathaway, but that dress is STUPID AND UGLY.

    • the_elle_word

She is on my IHL and I don’t care for the dress, but she is WERQing the hell out of it!

    • Alice Tram

      I kinda dislike it ?
