Taylor Swift in NYC

Posted on December 07, 2012

God bless the winter months. They give us so much more to look at when assessing celebs who venture out onto the streets.

Taylor Swift leaves her hotel in New York City.

Like, for instance, how much we like everything here, but can’t shake the feeling that the brown coat doesn’t work as well as a black or grey one would. It’s not “wrong,” so much as it’s a little off. Still, SUPER-cute stockings and shoes, yes?

See? We can be nice.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

    • formerlyAnon

Yes. You gentlemen are correct on all counts.

I am wearing nearly identical tights (as I am the funky tight queen). I’d feel so cool right now, but this is Taylor Swift so instead I feel nothing at all.

      • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

Agreed — I immediately thought “Taylor Swift may’ve just killed my super expensive funky tights fetish by apparently sharing it.”

        • http://www.flickr.com/photos/21151157@N00/ rawrgrowlrawr

          Haha, we’re such bitches.

    • halleygee

It looks like she is wearing a dance recital costume underneath her coat.

      • Mismarker

Those are the tap shoes I wore when I was 5.  Shuffle Off to Buffalo, Taylor.

    • Sara__B

I can’t be objective when in the presence of a great coat.  I love everything about this outfit.

      • mshesterp

That coat is GORGEOUS.  In this instance, I Think the coat should’ve been black, but on its own–I love it so hard.  It’s just so swingy and a pretty color and fun.

    • blogless

Why is Michael Nesmith from the Monkees hiding in the corner in that top shot?

Yes, super cute shoes and nylons. And I’ve worn similar nylons and you have to be careful putting them on so the stripes all line up.

      • Sara__B

Michael Nesmith hat and sideburns in 2012. Amazing. (I wonder if Peter is nearby. He was my favorite Monkee.)

        • http://www.facebook.com/CatherineKatz Catherine Katz

My husband had those sideburns.  I have photo proof.  And had to reply since I love the songs Nesmith wrote for the Monkees!

          Love the shoes, too.

      • V V

OH MY GOD, he’s a time traveler!

      • Kasie Hilburn

The girl has 4 bodyguards from what I see!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Yes—but if she were wearing a black coat, I’d want a different color purse, which would then make one have to pick a color that would somehow go with the purple & black scarf, so I’m voting for gray as the perfect alternative.

The hulks in back of her look rather……..hulking, no?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Exactly – I like it all, but NONE of it together.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

The coat is such a cute shape. OF COURSE she went with princess seams but at least it isn’t red. Whatever she’s wearing underneath must be a whole lot shorter than she usually wears.

    • random_poster

Grey coat would have made this look perfect.

    • ShayShay

Taylor will look soooo much better when she chops off that mop of hair and gets an edgy looking haircut/do.  I think she has an interesting face but it’s hidden behind chunky bangs and long cinderella tresses.  Perhaps when she matures a bit . . . Yes, the hoisery is gorge!

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

love that purple scraf, but the brown is not quite right, i agree.  but black would be so drab.  grey, yes, or navy/indigo?

    • afabulous50

I agree – a grey coat would be perfect here.  Thanks for not trashing her…again.  That just gets tiring.

    • snarkykitten

somewhere along the line, someone told me that brown & black should never, ever go together. I think she’s proving why.

      • Vickiefantastico

I was going to write this exact thing! It was my mother who told me that when I was a child, and I’m sorry, it still holds true.

      • gabbilevy

Perhaps after this important lesson from the PUFs, they’ll Never Ever Get Back Together.

      • kimmeister

She’ll get the message if you phrase it like this: “brown and black should never, ever, ever get combined together.”

    • kaycem

that scarf reminds me of every baby dyke tumblr background ever.  she may as well be wearing a studded belt.

    • Tatiana Luján

I think what clashes a bit is the scarf, not the coat. If the scarf were, for example, a forest green, the look wouln’t be a bit off.
I love the coat, the hose, the shoes and the purse.

      • sweetestsith

I completely agree, if the scarf were just solid I think that would do a lot. Green, red, or turquoise would have been prettier though.

    • meowing

Happy to see a femal celeb carrying a normal size bag.  What on earth do the other ladies have in those small-car-size bags??

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Based on the recent Nicole Richie pic? Sweet F.A.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13805908 Kelly Sowers

Can we talk about the heinous shoes going on behind Taylor, on the mysterious, faceless blue-coat person??? Yikes!

    • aahlife

I am clearly in the minority here, I think the color of her coat goes wells with her hair color and her skin peeking through her stockings.

    • MsALVA

I feel like, if you’re going to do the winter coat over a skirt w/ tights look, the coat HAS to be a bit longer than this. Otherwise she not only looks like she forgot to wear pants, but also you can imagine that the skirt underneath is way too short and therefore, out of season. A good example of doing it right was the outfit Cathy Cambridge wore out of the hospital the other day, the coat was long enough to cover properly but also to assume that she’s not freezing her legs off in just tights, and that there’s likely at least a knee-length winter-appropriate skirt underneath.

      God, I’m nitpicky.

      • Sadie-Ann

I am so with you on the forgotten pants part. It’s just weird looking. Everything is covered, but it looks like something was forgotten.

And not to mention the flasher connotations.

    • lbl

I think it could be fixed by switching the scarf.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I like a good black/brown combo. This is all working like gangbusters for me, which is a little painful to write because her very face brings out my ire.

      • Laylalola

Ha! I know. “Adorable outfit” is what my post says — but I had to grit my teeth and even now I’m having to force myself to tamp down that impulse to lash out with nasty personal comments.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Am I high or is there something crazy going on with that middle button? Why is it BELOW the buttonhole?

      It’s giving OCD-me fits…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

         I’m guessing it’s hanging by a thread.

      • Maribeth Foley

seriously! it doesn’t make any sense!

      • ClevelandburbsBeth

I never would have noticed that! Now it completely bugs! I can’t come up with a logical explanation, which further bugs.

    • bookish

I feel like I’m committing a huge fashion no no if I mix brown with black, but maybe this is an old “rule” I should just try to forget.

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

I love that jacket, but I agree a different color would have been better with those stockings and shoes.

    • alyce1213

I love the unexpectedness, unpredictability of the brown coat with the purple scarf.  She looks great.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I am not crazy about that scarf, but I love everything else she is sporting here.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

      LOVE the shoes!!!

    • http://twitter.com/juliafoxtrot Julia Fox

      she must be cold…

    • SpillinTea

Everyone’s favorite “virginal” slut looks cute here, I must admit.

    • http://julia_here.livejournal.com/ Julia

I am amazed at the way she’s got those vertically striped tights on so straight she must have used a plumb-bob. And that’s the coat I would have bought, if I had been able to find it before I ran out of coat-shopping time and money (another winter layering sweaters and jackets and wearing my horrible ugly too-big five year old coat when it gets too cold).

      • http://www.deborahwiles.com/ GoodSally

        plumb-bob ftw! hahaha.

    • MissAmynae

cute!  and i like that its slightly off, makes it seem like she picked her own clothes, rather than have a stylist put it all together for her.

    • leave_Blake_alone

I think the brown coat is great with the scarf, but it does clash a bit with the stockings/shoes. Not bad though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

A cute outfit, and I don’t even mind the brown coat. However, not having any clothing show past the hem of her coat makes it look like she’s going “Sea of Love” on us.

    • Maribeth Foley

is it bothering anyone else that it doesn’t look like the 2nd button is actually through the button hole??

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13805908 Kelly Sowers

just noticed that! yeah! what the heck, it’s like futilely dangling from the button hole

      • Judy_J

You’re right!  It looks like it’s either dangling from the button hole or it was just sewed on and the button hole is just for looks.  Either way, it needs to be fixed.

    • JasmineAM

LOVE the shoes, have some Christian Siriano ones (from Payless for $14!) that look just like this. Still hate her though.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

Why is her hair so much lighter on top of her head than on the bottom? Is this just lighting? It almost looks grey.

    • Laylalola

      Adorable outfit.

    • Candigirl1968

We need to know who makes that wonderful coat.

    • Judy_J

      I love that coat!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Those shoes rule.

    • nannypoo

I like the coat and I’m glad it’s brown because if it were black we wouldn’t be able to.see the pretty details. I’m not sure I like the scarf with it though.

    • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

I happen to love the coat in brown, although I think it doesn’t work with her coloring. On me, however…I’d be happy to take that off your hands, Taylor.

    • MilaXX

My favorite thing abot winter are tights & boots and I like hers

    • kittenwithaquip

I’m just imagining how cute her ensemble would have looked if she’d put on a charcoal grey or tweed jacket.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FHLWSE7HQKOWJ43KJLAKHKERAU Bailey Lovell

I have finally boarded the Not a Fan of T. Swift Train.  Didn’t she JUST break up with the Kennedy and is now going for Curly from One Direction?  She kills me.  Be single for a minute.  Learn how to write a song that doesn’t come straight from your diary.  I can’t.  I just can’t with this one anymore.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh don’t you guys. Don’t. I have been mixing my browns with my blacks/grays specifically to please you. Now you are telling me maybe not? I can’t keep up. She looks great. I love the tights, the shoes, the coat is fab.

    • ankali

      In complete agreement with TLo.

    • guest2visits

Grey or black would tie the scarf a little better to the outfit.  Or she could just change out the scarf; a cute look either way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1129137319 Paula Pertile

Yes! Super cute stockings and shoes.Yes!

    • Louise Bryan

I love a nice swing coat, but I prefer one that looks warm.  I’m okay with the color, and the tights and shoes are great.

    • barbarienne

I’m giving her a thumbs up just for the purple scarf.

Yes, the coat might be better in a cool tone rather than warm, but I love the cut of it and the length on her.

    • Monabel

Now, I think the brown is rich and pretty and a nice change from the predictable black or grey.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DBSIHWVY4ECXGNXAXFXJMSCNIE Katrin

It always confuses me when I cannot see even a hint of of the… skirt? short? What IS she wearing? She IS wearing something other than hose, right?

    • lizajane1776

Goodness gracious, girl! Stand up straight!

    • trisker

That looks like a Coach bag from about 1980.  I know they’ve been re-issuing Coach “classics.”  I like the color of the coat a lot.

    • Vaniljekjeks

I feel like what she has on underneath is made of latex and doesn’t leave much to the imagination.  The coat and scarf are just a disguise.

    • glennethph

I’m weirded out by that outfit.  I’m squicked by the idea that she seems to be naked underneath that coat.

    • DCSheehan

Well hello beefy security x 3. Taylor who?

    • ashley willian

she is my favourite nd she looks beautiful That coat is GORGEOUS.

    • RocknRollmom

Well I apparently can’t be nice.  The scarf looks cheap and doesn’t go with the outfit at all.  The coat is meh as I don’t like the color at all, but I will grant it is a cute style.  The stockings are fabulous and kudos for her for those straight lines.  But I think the shoes make her feet look fat (what a bizarre comment!).

    • librarygrrl64

I totally agree on the brown not working. Or at least not that shade of brown.

    • decormaven

Beautiful coat, and that looks like a vintage Coach purse. Kelly style, I think?

    • rh33

She’s missing her 18 year old boyfriend accessory.
