Wow, this seems a little too literal a take on American Gothic.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

       That says it all!

  • zenobar

Not digging the Jane Eyre hair or the naugahyde-looking clutch.  But the dress is interesting.

  • schadenfreudelicious

perhaps the nuns in the asylum are finally rubbing off on her?…..

  • crash1212

First glance – me no likey. Second and subsequent glances…it grows on me. I think she’s sorta rockin’ it. I’m not in love with the hair, but I really thing all the rest is a pretty classic look. Nicely done!

  • Mildred20

    Amish.
    School marm.
    Fraulein Paulson.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Schoolmarm was the first thing that came to mind.

      • lindsmh

Yes. On first glance the clutch even looked like a book to me.

      • Louise Bryan

My first thought was that it looked like a school uniform.  With shiny shoes and a little bookbag like I used to have in elementary school that sort of looked like a briefcase except it was Barbie-esque colored.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

      Puritan.

  • AlexisPayne

Kind of like the dress, especially the mix of textures, but that hair is awfully aging.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Sorry Sarah, but when I first saw this my impression was “wealthy dowager”.  Not good.

Mine was “Sister Mary Frances in her best Sunday habit.”

Sarah Paulson arrives at the premiere of Amish wives…

    • raininmai

I much prefer the styling on the model.

      • librarygrrl64

Agreed. Sometimes a dress this demure needs edgy accessorizing so it doesn’t look frumpy. Like it unfortunately does on her.

  • Judy_J

Reminds me of suspender skirts I wore in junior high.  They were all the rage in 1968.

    NO. DO NOT WANT.

    class dismissed.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The dress looks cute and a little edgy on the model, but Paulson’s hairdo takes this into schoolmarm territory.

    • mmc2315

The goofy hat, and boots on the model youthen it…..a lot.

      • BrooklynBomber

They youthen it, but it’s still bad!

    • Lisa_Cop

The sleeve length on the model is 3/4. On Paulson it is full length. Gives the dress a totally different vibe.

      • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

True.  I hadn’t noticed that before.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Shew-ee….that is some pilgrim realness there.  Doubt that was the intent.

    • schadenfreudelicious

if only she had worn those hiddy pilgrim shoes Marc Jacobs usually sports the look would have been complete! ;)

This is SO not what I expected when I saw the thumbnail.  Not a scroll down fug, but definitely a scroll down surprise.  Looks like something the VonTrapp girls would wear for their holiday concert (the boys would be in the matching velvet shorts with white shirt).  Her rather severe hairstyle doesn’t do her any favors, either.

  • stubbornthoughts

PRUDE. Give this to Elle Fanning so she can bring some ironic youth to the party.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hilda.e.westervelt Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

With a more stylish, softer hairstyle, I think this could work.  But the hair makes it too mumsie.

    • kschwarting

You’re so right–the first thing I thought is that the hair was too severe.  That and the shape of the skirt was radically changed, which makes it read matronly.

  • MissMariRose

    Parochial school teacher.

  • MoHub

For a minute there, I thought I was looking at Gloria Vanderbilt.

  • Pennymac

Where’s the guy who supposed to stand next to her with a pitchfork in his hand> Serving up some American Gothic realness.
    This is a NO.

  • Anne At Large

I think she could have pulled this off with better hair, but this just makes me want her to call the costume designer from Down With Love. She can do retro, this is just not the way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Its a cute dress, but she definitely took it to school marm like so many other bitter kittens are saying. Shame.

  • ShayShay

Given Paulson’s role on AHS, I understand why she chose this dress.  But it should have been styled better; different hair and shoes with a bitch face because a look llike this needs an attitude.

    • Jennifer Coleman

Actually, since ‘Down With Love’, she’s been attempting these neo-sixties looks, with checkered results. Whoever suggested she carry that clutch needs to be slapped full in the face. LOVE the earrings, though. But not with the dress.

  • alyce1213

Oh lawdy, just no. Another Marc Jacobs failure. I remember sketching a dress very much like that for my Revlon doll, back in 1961.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Well I’m off to audition for The Crucible – The Musical”.

  • Imasewsure

Wow awful look on her… shape is terrible and I have to say that matronly is only attractive when it is ironic (aka a Fanning, etc)

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

elle fanning could pull this off, but even she would have to go with the runway version of the skirt.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

school teacher of a catholic school …

  • MilaXX

da’ hell? She looks like a pilgrim.

  • Little_Olive

    Real Amish wives of PA.

  • formerlyAnon

Hope she likes it. I can see that it might be “a look” she fancies, but it doesn’t do much for her.

  • homofascist

    Goody Putnam realness.

  • Introspective

concur with all the pilgrim/amish/sisterwife/schoolmarm/clusterfuck commentary above.

but im here to talk about the damning nature of pale satiny fabrics. there’s nothing ok about them. they cheapen the wearer always and everywhere that they appear. can we get that memo to the army of stylists trolling about hollywood now?

  • decormaven

“I’m a school marm with a prison tat past.” Sounds like a story line to me.

  • marilyn

This dress would be hard for anyone to wear.  The shoes and the attitude of the runway model make it work as much as it’s going to.  She makes this look even more dowdy than it is.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I very much like the dress on her, but I wish the hair were a little softer…or just looked more “done”. It’s like she put it up and got dressed, then ran out before her hair gay could do his magic.

    Her makeup bag is ugly.

  • RocknRollmom

How old is this woman?!  Because I have yet to see her in anything remotely appealing on any of the pics that have graced this site. Does she have Mayim Bialik-type religous restrictions?  Because I can’t think of any reason why you would otherwise wear this dress.  She is a lovely woman, but she needs help.  And this dress reminds me why I don’t like Marc Jacobs.

  • RocknRollmom

Ok, IMDB says she is about to celebrate her 38th birthday.  She needs to unage herself rapidly.  Wow.

    • Introspective

      time for some youthening. stat.

    • barbarienne

HOLY SHIT. I would have guessed at least 50 from these pics.

  • greyhoundgirl

On the model the skirt looks like a pencil skirt–on her it looks like a bell–maybe a cow bell and she’s the milkmaid.

  • Trisha26

Girl’s pinafore / choir robe / demure dominatrix

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Why oh why did they change the skirt shape to a-line? It ruins that dress, which is too schoolmarm-ish to begin with.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

Is this the premiere of “The Life of Pi?” Is that her Pi dress?

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

wow, this is really really bad.

change the shape of the skirt back to the runway version, take off the sleeves, and give her an more modern do. maybe, maybe wed have something then.

  • jw_ny

     milkmaid chic

  • barbarienne

Let me guess–they’re planning a reboot of Little House on the Prairie, and she’s been cast as Mrs. Olsen?

I’m pretty sure you have to be a manic pixie dream girl with funky accessories to wear this dress and not have it look frumpy. I’m hoping Ms. Paulson went for the 18th-century frontier housewife hair because she’s being ironic.

  • Allison Woods

The dresses are so unfortunate today.

  • ankali

This would totally work for me with sassier and/or edgier hair. And a better bag; that one is hideous.

  • librarygrrl64

The dress and shoes and earrings are fine (although I’m not sure about those earrings with THIS dress), but that clutch is a distraction, and the hair style is TRAGIC! How could she not see it???

  • RzYoung

I love this! I sort of think this is what Emily Blunt might look like in 10 years if she lays off the botox?

  • elemspbee

    so mama bates.

  • onefifteen

    The Pilgrim hair is awful.

  • ccm800

Model – edgey hot – her…dreary droll. wow.

  • Zippypie

“I’m Head Sisterwife and in charge of today’s reading from The Book of Mormon.”

  • Polka_Dotty

I don’t think this ages her; she looks like she’s wearing a schoolgirl’s dress. All she needs to do is swap out those Louboutins for some Mary Janes; and the stockings for ankle socks. And yes, the dark brown binding on the clutch makes it look just like a schoolbook.
