This is like Oscar Night on Deep Space Nine.

    • I think the fact she held her arms like that is adding to the borg affect…

  • snarkykitten

it would look divine without that stupid cutout!!

    • Kristin McNamara

Y’know, I can’t decide if I love it or hate it! (Which already makes it the most I’ve ever liked a cutout before….) It’s a very interesting dress, nonetheless.

  • Roosevelt 85

This is actually damn fierce. Gurl has to have guts (pun) to go out with her body showing so much. Looks great…IN SPITE of Stella.

  • Benjamin E Miller

Beautiful. Actually really lovely. I’ve always liked Stella more than the Bitter Kittens – this really takes the cake though. WERQ material.

  • I am shocking myself here. I actually, (gulp) like this dress. Like, a lot. I never thought to say that about a McCartney dress.

    • schadenfreudelicious

picking my jaw off the floor cause i feel the same way…will wonders never cease?…

      • newleaf1

Same here.  This chick is rockin this dress.

        • She has the bod to work this dress – we should all be so lucky. A++, she is smokin’ hot.

      • bellafigura1

        Me too, stunning.

    • Rand Ortega

Well, the end of the world is 15 days away, so…

      • Kristin McNamara

        Ha! Well played.

    • bittykitty

agreed! i can’t believe i actually like this dress.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

It’s a trap.  It must be some sort of trap.  Maybe she has a new collection coming out soon and she wants to make you like her so when she unveils her new collection it will hurt you even more.

    •  I KNOW! And it has a bunch of elements that should make me hate it but I don’t! I think it is mostly down to the  woman in the dress. It suits her figure perfectly – if she was longer or shorter waisted, so the sheer didn’t sit  perfectly around her, it wouldn’t have worked.

    • Pennymac

      Me too.

  • I almost love this, which I doubt I have ever said about a Stella McCartney dress. But something is off, no? The shape of the sheer cutout doesn’t quite work for me, though it’s hard for me to pinpoint exactly why. But Samantha looks like she feels sexy and sophisticated; she sells it, where I don’t think that just anyone could.

    • Well she wisely kept hair and makeup really low key, since this is such a potentially problematic dress. But she has both the abdomen and the presence to carry it off with class.

    • I am with you. It just seems like the shape is odd, but somehow it’s still pretty, but I don’t love it.

  • Someone got her teeeeeth bleeeeeeeached

  • kimmeister

    Very striking.

  • MilaXX

As far as dresses with sheer panels go, this is okay. It fits well and the sheer is an actual color instead of the always ugly attempt at flesh color illusion netting.

  • Rand Ortega

Love the cutout, makes her waist very sexy. But it’s a bit of a Dr. Jekyll dress for me (19th Century gothic literature is so ripe for fashion analogy). The top is wonderfully beaded, but the bottom isn’t. Why? Some of the bottom should be beaded to give the dress balance.
    A marginal IN.

  • Emily Behrens

I can’t help but think of the old maternity jeans panel when I look at the bottom of the dress.  Top half is fantastic.

  • Mismarker

Ooooo.  Nice.  I wonder what the back looks like.

    • Sara__B

I googled her name and the London premiere and finally found a picture. The back is like the front, with a short strip of navy blue (the zipper, I presume) in between. Not bad at all.

      • Mismarker

A ha! Finally found it.  You’re right! Not bad at all.  In my search, I also found a few pics of all the ladies (Seyfried, Hathaway, and Barks) together.  Amanda Seyfried’s neoprene ruffle dress looks very sad next to the sleekness of AH and AS.

  • It’s certainly a lovely silhouette, but anything that announces to the viewer that you can’t possibly be wearing underwear? Tacky.

  • MoHub

I was fine with the clip.

    And then I scrolled down.

  • Wow! I like this, quite a lot. It’s so chic. The cut and the fabric and the color. Did I already say ‘wow?’

  • Joyce VG

Before I knew this was Stella McCartney I thought it was daring. Now it’s unflattering and weird.

    • In_Stitches

That’s…terrible.  Nothing wrong with being objective when thinking critically.

  • Imasewsure

It’s not as awful as it should be with that gigantic cut out (I hate cut outs) but I kind of like it. This beautiful color and simple styling helps a lot but I bet the back is horribly low (and therefore maybe not something I would like overall). This would have been a great dress for Charlize Theron or maybe even our poor anti-fashionista, Ms. Biel-Timberlake

  • Samantha Barks looks a lot like Rachel Leigh Cook.

  • marilyn

This dress is only kind of horrible, which is  an improvement for Stella McCartney.  It looks like a costume of some kind, although very nicely made.

  • gabbilevy

Nope, she looks amazing, full-stop. One of the few times I’ve seen sheer cutouts work. Probably because they’re a color, not trying to be invisible. I know the PUFs hate Stella, but honestly, if they didn’t know it was Stella, would those who are railing against it be doing so? Methinks perhaps not.

    • H3ff

Come on. Everyone knows that dissing Stella adds to your fashion cred.
It shows that you know that her designs are always inferior to those of other designers, and that her success is due solely to her father.

  • Violina23

Wow, if it wasn’t for that sheer thing, she would look STUNNING.  I hope she gets some recognition for this role, she sounded fantastic in the 25th anniversary concert!

  • Anne At Large

  • TLJezebel

    Slammin’ bod.

  • Remember the Barbie that had a rubber band between her upper and lower torso, so that you could really pose her around? That’s what this makes me think of. Or that she’s the assistant in a saw-the-lady-in-half-trick. It’s just too much of a cutout for me, as if it’s on PURPOSE, but what FOR? Love the color, though, and she does look nice, if stiff.

  • Should we speculate as to how the back looks? Yikes.

  • elirt

It’s ball gown meats figure skater. I find it very confusing, but she’s got the perfect figure to make it work (if it can work…)

  • kaycem

surprisingly, the mesh is actually working for me here and i think it’s b/c it’s not “nude” like in other recent examples.  i like the placement of the velvet pieces and what they choose to reveal / aim the eye at.  i’m 100% a sucker for dark blue velvet always, but i love how much extra oomph the crystals add here.

i’m so surprised that i’m liking a stella dress, but i suppose there’s a first time for everything?  this easily could’ve gone in an ice skating costume direction, so color me very surprised @ ms. mccartney.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I completely hate the idea of this dress, but in this particular real-world instance: this woman looks flawless.

  • I don’t know if it’s the way the top is cut or the way she’s holding herself, but it seriously looks like her head is on backwards.

I don’t hate it, but eh. I love the colour. I love the beading and I love the skirt, but I hate the illusion netting. ETA – especially in picture #4.

And I can’t get past the head-on-backwards thing.

  • well, shut my mouth: it’s a Stella McCartney dress that I actually like.  Better take my own temperature, I must be sick or something.  Totally shocking.

  • frannyprof

Seyfried must be hating her costars right about now.

  • alyce1213

    I don’t know, it’s like a Raquel Welch dress from the ’70s, that’s all I see.
I think it’s a cheesy, like most Stellas.

  • lrober03

If you’re gonna do the crop top/cut out effect, you’re gonna have to look pretty far to find someone to work it better than this

  • Sara__B

Such a tiny waist! And how is she managing to look so fabulous in what should be a tacky gown? She wanted to be noticed, and she  definitely was.

    • Candigirl1968

It definitely is a tacky gown.  She clearly is beyond fabulous to cause this to be a gown that makes you scratch your head rather than want to claw your eyes out at its awfulness.  I’m not sure that anyone else in the galaxy could pull this thing off.

  • I am shocked to say that I think this is a spectacular dress, and the girl is rocking it. And I, like so many other BKs, usually hate Stella stuff.

  • AuntieAnonny

It’s funny, everyone who hates Stella loves this dress, and I, who loves Stella, hate this dress.

  • eruannalle

I’ve been looking at all the premiere pictures for almost two days now and I still can’t decide if I like this dress or not. Samantha is a cutie, though!

  • crash1212

I don’t hate this. Sorry…that’s about as effusive as I can get about a Stella.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Pretty girl. Bizarre dress. I can’t make up my mind. Either she looks really good or like a lava lamp.

  • shanteIstay

It makes her midriff just look bizarre

  • I have no idea who this chick is, but I kinda love this dress. I KNOW, right?!

    • I can tell you one thing: she’s not a chick, she’s a woman.

      • I’ve got to ask… In the context of this photo, or in general?

  • barbarienne

Her torso is floating away from her hips. She’s holding on for dear life!

That said, I can’t believe how much I like this.

  • Trisha26

Just because you can wear a dress, and just because it makes your body look amazing, doesn’t mean you should. I don’t even want to know what the back looks like.

  • H3ff

    Selina Gomes’ big sister.

Really stunning. Really surprising for a Stella McCartney dress.

  • LLuL

There is no room for error with the shape of that cutout.  She is owning that dress. It could have easily gone very badly for another girl. That’s her bod creating the interesting lines in the garment, and yet it doesn’t even come close to slutty or desperate. This girl gets a WERQ from me.

  • ankali

Not sure about the dress itself (I think I’d like it if the bodice wasn’t beaded & matched the skirt), but MAN, does she look fantastic in it.

  • Very good. A simple, sleek design with harmoniously distributed embellishments and aptly placed cutout.

  • H2olovngrl

I wish we could see the back.

  • LOOK at my tiny waist!!!

  • formerlyAnon

I assume it is an optical illusion that at one glance she looks flat-chested, another has a mid-life matronly bosom?  And at no time do I glance at this and note her chest in a positive way.

It’s interesting, but if it looks in person as it photographs, ultimately unsuccessful.  Better than average for Ms. McCartney.

  • NNgela

    Looks like a gymnastics leotard.

  • librarygrrl64

She certainly has the figure for it, and the color is lovely on her, but….enh…I don’t know.

  • The best thing I can say about this dress is that it’s not that bad even while serving up Ice Capades realness–and Barks is really selling it.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Very interesting – in a good way!  I really like this.  You have to look at her and it’s working with her figure perfectly!!

  • decormaven

Wish she had a pretty statement ring – something to balance out all the detail on the top half of the dress.

  • SewingSiren

This would have been quite elegant if it weren’t for the navy blue pantyhose waistband inset. What a shame. Everyone is certainly bowing out and letting Anne Hathaway take the center stage aren’t they? I wonder if Anne’s performance really outshines all the others by that much.

  • BayTampaBay

Love It!  I think she looks great.  Hair & make-up are perfect for the dress.  A WERQ in my book.

  • I’d love the see the back. I don’t hate it, but I dont’ love it. I’m not sure that’s a compliment.  At least Samantha here seems to love it.

    • Judy_J

I too would love to see what the back of this gown looks like. If the back dips as low as it appears to from the side view, her butt cleaveage would be totally exposed, and I doubt that anyone would wear a gown that mooned everyone.

      • I googled it, its the same, but with a vertical navy seam for the zipper (which kind of ruined the effect, but i guess there was little choice).  I was on your thought pattern, had the shapes continued in the back, she would be mooning people.

  • kategs

I’m surprised that T and Lo didn’t comment on this one!  I think she looks stunning and I am surprised at how much I like that dress.

  • The optical effect cuts her in two… and not in an attractive way.

  • B_C_J

The fit is PERFECTION and that is the key to this dress. Moreover the embellished top is beautifully set off by the sleek, simple bottom both in turn highlighted by the transitioning fabric that only a woman with this spectacular of a figure could pull off.

  • mmc2315

Ooooh, I don’t know.  I love how it accentuates her hourglass figure, but I’m not sold on the different fabrics–top & bottom.  It’s doing a weird visual for me.  Heavy on top and sleek on the bottom?

  • TAGinMO

One of the best Stella McCartney dresses I’ve ever seen. Yeah, that’s damning with faint praise, but she really looks stunning.

  • MarissaLG

Interesting. I’m really not sure how I feel about this look, but she look pretty, I guess.

  • Jenna621

Scrolldown fug.  I would like liked it so much better without the weird sheer cutout.

  • I’m not a Stella-hater by principle, as many of the bitter kittens are, but I never really like most of her work. THIS, however. BAM. Girl looks perfect!

  • Someone needs to tell Stella McCartney that ice skating costumes need to be short.

  • EEKstl

This comes closer to working than it by all rights should, but the cutout is just too large. If the opaque pcs were closer together and the cutout more subtly curved it would have been much better.  But she is rocking it, whomever she is.

  • quiltrx

Ew.  It’s like the dress version of the saw-the-lady-in-half box.  It looks like she’s separating.

  • subwaycars

Damn. Normally I would say this is tacky as fuck but girl is working it.

  • guest2visits

Without a flawless figure for a perfect fit – this would be a joke.  I half hate it anyway; it probably DOES look extra silly from
behind.  I think it would be gorgeous with a top just as pictured, but the skirt portion filled in, maybe an exposed back.

  • kikisayshi

    I wanna see the back.

  • Wow. This is really something. It’s a little strange, but I sort of love it. Especially in the far away shots.

  • Carly Warnock

she is werkin’ in stella, the impossible just become possible. and her body is slammin’. i think it deserved a werq.

  • Is there some kind of Leah Michele “of course” equivalent for Stella McCartney? Because: of course.

  • Wow.  I lust her right now.
