Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

Posted on December 12, 2012

For your Pretty of the Day, what could be better than this, the Oscar de la Renta pre-fall 2013 collection, darlings? From loosely structured suits to gorgeous gowns; silk crochet to brushed denim, there was a surprising range of looks here, all within the OdlR purview, of course. Said purview being superfeminine and beautiful, every single time. We attended this one yesterday and, like we do every time we see an Oscar collection up close, were struck by just how stunningly beautiful and intricately rendered these garments are, as well as how lucky the women who get to wear them. It must be hard not to feel beautiful wearing an Oscar ensemble.

Yes. To most of them. I don’t like the green. But everything else, yes. Please send it wrapped with a pretty bow. Thank you.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I’ll take all the green you left behind, thanks.

      • barbarienne

I’ll rochambeau you for the extra green!

I have never been so freaking happy with a color that The Fashion Industry deigned to make the “in” color. And particularly that it’s the cooler end of the green range, the peacock and forest colors. Love love love.

        • LesYeuxHiboux

No kidding. Finally, a color that actually looks good on me! It’s also my favorite, so I am one happy fashion-watcher.

        • fallen_ikon

I love green. It’s probably the most flattering color on me, so I’m really hoping I can get some green dresses next year. I am still kicking myself for not buying a forest green dress that I saw last year.

  • BrooklynBomber

Might be my fave OdelaR collection in a long time.

  • MilaXX

love it all. modern, yet classic and feminine

    • EveEve

And we’re allowed to have hips again!  Yipee!

      • fallen_ikon

I am loving all of the swingy and A-line dresses/skirts. My hips are 2 sizes bigger than my torso so sheath dresses and I do not get along unless there is some serious (and expensive) tailoring done.

  • Tolon

That turquoise blue dress with the black lace overlay is sort of stunningly beautiful. I actually stopped breathing for a second. The longer white one is not as successful. The gorgeous yellow gown is also amazing. Thank you for showcasing – gorgeous!

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I looooove the blue dress. I used to think Tiffany blue was too twee to be done well. Not any more.

  • Ms. Schmidt

Some are lovely, but some strike me as incredibly dowdy-looking.

    • StellaZafella

I think the styling of the models, especially in the evening wear, isn’t doing the looks any favors. Current red carpet trends seem to say: “I have this fabulous gown, but I couldn’t be bothered to wash my hair…” etc., etc.

      • l_c_ann

But for once, I was so interested in the dresses etc, that I barely noticed the models.

        • Chantelle James

I usually barely notice the models but this time I couldn’t not see what appeared to be greasy, stringy hair.

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Nothing here feels really dowdy to me — I kind of love it all — but it does feel toned down, buttoned up and old-fashioned (not retro). Seeing as there’s nothing tying all of these clothes together except for the ladylike vibe, it ends up feeling like the closet of a very wealthy, very tasteful 60-year-old woman with stuff she’s gathered over the years. A lot of the separates would look fresher paired with skinny jeans or anything contemporary-looking.

      • l_c_ann

Unfortunately, skinny jeans don’t do much for a large (sorry about this) larger section of the population. We do have money and do want clothes that look good and are wearable.  I’m the demographic you describe ( with a bit less money than wealthy) and(except with lots of gardening clothes).  I would rather call them classic than old fashioned, but that’s just me.

        • fallen_ikon

I wish skinny jeans would go away. I only have two pairs of jeans right now and they’re both so old that they’re on the verge of wearing out because I cannot find anything that’s not skinny, slim cut, lean cut, or some other word that really means “no hips or butt allowed”.

        • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

I love a classic look, but you need to be older to pull it off. If a younger woman tried to wear those separates, she’d look like she’s in costume. Not that there’s anything wrong with designing an entire collection for the older crowd… I guess I’m just not used to it?

          • luciaphile

At some point, I would really like it if women were allowed to grow up and dress like the adults they are….I like most of this collection (although a lot of the looks in the middle column don’t appeal to me).

      • Corsetmaker

I think that’s part of my problem with this collection, it’s too much of a mish mash to actually feel like a collection. With the exception of a few of the gowns, I feel like I’m looking at a high end, conservative department store catalogue from 1980.

    • lrhg

I thought so too, especially the beginning. It gets much better towards the middle and end.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I think they would look stunning on the very young and majestic on the grandes dames and probably a bit frumpy on those in between unless they were really WERQING the styling.

    • Corsetmaker

Agreed. I suppose it’ll appeal to ladies who lunch of a certain age but there’s lots of early 80s looking stuff here. A few I like but on the whole it’s very, very conservative.

  • Emily Giovanni

I love this. However, fashion makes me confused about seasons. They are releasing the Pre-Fall 2013 collection during the winter of 2012? I feel like I am missing some semantic detail here.

    • http://twitter.com/thimblethom Christianthomas

They’re showing the pre-fall 2013 collection.. it will be in stores after spring/summer 2013 and before fall/winter 2013

    • AuntieAnonny

They show their collections in advance of the seasons that they’re designed for so buyers have time to make orders for their stores.

    • DeborahJozayt

My guess it’s the fashion version of keeping up with the Joneses. Though I can understand stores needing 6 months to determine purchases based on market desirability.

    • Derek_anny

What they said.  The seasons are named for when the public will be able to buy the clothes.  TLo once said something to the effect that “Fall” collections you generally wear in the winter, “Spring” you wear in the spring, “Resort” is Summer and “Pre-fall”=Fall.

    • Emily Giovanni

      thanks for the clarification, folks!

  • hughman

A lot of it has a very 70s vibe to it, like the bits shown with the black patterned tights, that are quite interesting. I could see Mary on The Mary Tyler Moore Show sporting some of the numbers with jackets. It’s certainly rather demure compared to other recent collections. I’m not sure whether that speaks to his target audience or is some foreshadowing of things to come but it’s certainly different.

  • Unkempt

Gorgeous clothes, but dark hose with light shoes just looks horrible.

    • kimmeister

Agree.  However, those patterned tights are awfully cute!

  • Nicole Chubb

I love the collection and love the fact that the dresses have pockets, but do they have to walk with their hands in them? It looks just as silly as when the boys do it.

  • StellaZafella

I could actually wear some of this…not just dream of it as with so many other high-end designers (not Donna Karan, thank the gods).
I might not be the wisp-framed gamine anymore (never was to be truthful) but some of the skirt/jacket ensembles would certainly make me feel “pretty”…and they could mix with other things I have, too!

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

    Are hoof shoes done!?! Please?!

A lovely collection, without hideous clodhopper shoes uglifying everything up.

  • kat89

Gorgeous. I want just about every single thing in the collection!

  • Anathema_Device

So much to love here that it would be a loooong list if I were to name all my favorites. I really wish I could afford to wear de la Renta. The only clunkers for me are the looks with boxy jackets over full skirts.

  • Natalie Bryan

That short-sleeved floral dress is to die for.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

now that I’ve lost a little over 30lbs, I wish I could afford a lot of these

    • Rand Ortega

Mazel! Lots of resale sites sell pre owned ODR at fantastic prices like The REalreal, Ebay, coutureusa, etc. Treat yourself, you certainly earned it!

      • formerlyAnon

And sometimes you luck onto some that’ve never been worn. Folks with more money than us make impulse purchases too.

  • Rand Ortega

    *SWOON*
That polka dot peplum has Penelope Cruz’s name written all over it (photo shoot, not RC). Flo Welch was made for that yellow gown. SJP would look so good in that 1st blue suit. The silver gown screams Nicole Kidman. The orange belted gown would totally suit Jessica Chastain…

    • makeityourself

I want Shelly O to wear the yellow gown with silver embroidery and the necklace to an important event.  She would make it look modern and maybe OdelaR would be happier with her in the second term.

      • Rand Ortega

Genius! Remember how he wept real crocodile tears because she hadn’t worn any of his designs? Wearing that gorgeous # would certainly shut him up!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=639062430 Sara Padilla

For some reason, I just started mentally replaying “Harper Valley PTA” in my brain.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Row 10, column 3 is my favorite.

  • Tatiana Luján

I want so many of these pieces, what a beautiful and wearable collection!

  • http://twitter.com/WaxPoesis WasPoesis

I want to get married in that yellow dress! #notengaged #makingacrazyladyweddingbinder #shakeshead

  • RocknRollmom

Lots of things here not in my wheelhouse as I have learned to say, but some but none in my budget.  Can I afford the hose because I REALLY want those black tights.  If I win the lottery, I will take row 9 please.

  • a_liking

so beautiful. I would DIE to own fourth middle and ninth right (sigh)

  • Zippypie

Some a little too retro 70s for my taste but all tastefully done.  For me, that black and white polka dot top with the skinny black ciggy pants.  Yes, please!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

If I ever hit the lotto, my one splurge would be the far left in row 8. Oscar, you are my hero.

  • VicksieDo

The yellow gown is perfection and I really like almost all of these looks.  Pretty indeed.

  • http://twitter.com/Kitamarang Kit

So many pockets! I’m in love. There are so many gorgeous pieces here. And I wish I could wear some of them to work.

  • PastryGoddess

I love love love those calf length skirts in this collection. It’s been a long while since I felt the need actually go out and get designer goodies

  • amaranth16

God, I love the black lace over white and that gorgeous, dramatic red-orange gown (both second to last row).  The green belted dress with the black appliques (?), about halfway through on the right, is pretty fab, too – I think that’s my Shelley O pick.

  • m0r0

    BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • Maya Cagan

Ugh, I wish I had ALL THE MONEY. Someday I will rob a bank and blow everything on clothes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4NKSJJRAOV6Z3MUKPEWOQGZ22Q MelissaA

I think this collection was designed for Taylor Swift because I can envision her in nearly every piece…

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

i dont love the pink-blue combinations at the beginning, but overall, there are many beautiful pieces here. love the plaid stockings.

  • quiltrx

I actually pretty much like everything I see!  Oh, if only I had the body, and the wallet, to wear such beautiful things.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I think I’ll take one of each.

  • Andrew

Some of the fugliest runway models I’ve ever seen!

  • Corsetmaker

A few nice pieces but a lot of it is rather elderly, and rather early 80s frumpy. A bit Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda in 9 to 5, with a touch of Melanie Griffiths in Working Girl for the more glam stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/Sinead_Doyle Sinéad Doyle

Love most of these (love the trousers in particular) but there’s a real 80′s society wear vibe about the dresses. The light blue dress with the black boob panels (and butterfly closures?) and the polka dot chest bow dress were definitely the sort of thing I would draw in my notebooks in the late 80′s as a kid.

  • decormaven

Very happy with the Dreamsicle color gowns. We’ll be seeing many of these on the RC in the next weeks as Oscar buzz heats up.

  • Julie Parr

Kate Middleton should wear many of these.

    • http://twitter.com/Sinead_Doyle Sinéad Doyle

I was just thinking these are all very young Diana. I could only imagine the media comparisons if Kate was to dress like this

  • Little_Olive

Wow, the cocktail and evening dresses seem to be my least favorite this time -give me those irregularly pleated skirts and tweed jackets (sans the green period).

  • jmorino08

I want it. ALL OF IT!! I would look so fabulous at pre-school pick up in that yellow gown!!

  • Judy_J

Lucky women, indeed!  If I ever won Power Ball, I’d buy this entire collection.  I love it all…the designs, the fabrics, the embellishments and detailing.

  • Valerie Jones

Doesn’t it kind of scream 1980s Chanel at you, though?

  • miagain

    oh me oh my…

  • Kathy_Marlow

    So much pretty…lurve!

  • mmc2315

Looking at this collection required some work, at least for me.  I think it’s the poor styling–awful hair, ugly black tights, meh shoes…

But, looking more closely, I can see some really great pieces.  I particularly like the greens.

  • kschwarting

Some beautiful and, dare I say, wearable pieces here.  I hope someone rocks that yellow gown at an upcoming awards show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

    polka dots!!! yay

  • elirt

WOW. A truly stunning collection with some great patterned fabrics. This is how the pros do it.

  • Candigirl1968

Love the yellow gown. It’s divine.

Is anyone else getting a 70′s/early 80′s vibe from these looks?

  • formerlyAnon

This is kinda thrilling (AS IF I’ll be wearing Oscar de la Renta anytime soon!). I always want to like his collections but am put off by excessive (pretty much any = excessive, for me) ruffles and aggressive florals. Most of these are easy to adore.

  • msdamselfly

OMG  For me,  almost a once in a lifetime moment of seeing a collection that really resonates with me.   I love it!

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

I am IN LOVE. Love the abundance of color and print, love the silhouettes. Can these just teleport themselves into my closet now, please?

  • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

    Want!

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

The pleating in that first grey skirt! It must look amazing in person.

  • kikisayshi

Every time I see an OdlR dress like the first one here, I just sigh. Gorgeous.

  • guest2visits

       Beautiful. I want everything.

  • ccm800

whatever will Minaj, Perry and all the other kiddieporndragqueenslutsfromouterspace DO with al this lady wear loveliness running around?
