Naomi Watts in Valentino on Jimmy Fallon

Posted on December 17, 2012

This is kind of kicky and fun:

Naomi Watts makes an appearance on ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ in a Valentino jumpsuit paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Valentino Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Mackenzie Drazan (ELITE)

Sure, it’s pleated, puffy pajamas paired with gold open-toed heels, which can go so wrong in so many ways, but for some reason, it’s all working for us. The color looks great on her and she looks relaxed and happy. The hair’s a right mess, but we suppose you can’t have everything in a look. We don’t know… we should hate it, but we can’t seem to work up anything but a smile at the sight of it.

I really want to see her new disaster movie.

      • SassieCassy

        i really really really dont

the look is good on naomi but on anyone even 5 lbs heavier it would be real fug

      • n a

i have witnessed enough disaster via this poofy jumpsuit. fugs!

        • Shawn EH

I cried at the trailer, is all I’m saying.

          • TieDye64

            So did I.

    • StellaZafella

Maybe it’s the hair and PJ’c ensemble, for some reason I looked at this and before I saw the name I thought, Donna Mills?

Not necessarily a bad thing, just my (albeit dated) impression.

      • NinaBoo

Actually, it’s perfect. Naomi is only 44 years old but her fashion choices over the last few years have me wondering if she used a Wayforward Machine. She consistently ages herself and it makes no sense. I’m not commenting on her face, hands, or any other body part people criticize. It’s an overall impression impacted by her hair, makeup, and clothing. It gives me a sad.

    • Kiltdntiltd

the only thing that’s really bugging me here is the odd beigey color of the neck band.  I wish it were the same color as the rest of it.

      • Carly Warnock

agreed! it makes her neck look badly aged too somehow.

        • decormaven

The outfit, from a distant view, looks good, but when there’s a close-up of the neckline- yikes! That light band reflects on the skin of the throat, and it is not flattering. Hand claps for those fierce gold sandals, though.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I agree… It’s so odd.  Why’d they make it flesh colored? If it’s to be indiscreet, then why have it at all? And if it was to be interesting, why not make it more purposeful looking?

        • Kiltdntiltd

Or why not remove the band entirely, and allow the neckline to be more broadly open?

          • Meg0GayGuys6

Yea, exactly.  That’s what I meant by indiscreet- If it’s not meant to be seen, then just rip that ish off!  Otherwise, I actually like it (I swear)  :)

    • crash1212

It’s a great ‘sitting’ outfit and I love those shoes…they actually look comfortable. I wish that band of color by her face wasn’t there, but we can’t have everything, can we? Overall – nicely done.

      • Sobaika

Maybe if it either blended better or stood out in contrast more? As it is the neck band looks very strange and misplaced.

    • kimmeister

This perfectly illustrates my issue with fitted jumpsuits – you can only stand in them.  Once you sit down, the crotch becomes a wrinkled mess.

      • roadtrip1000

Agreed. Those wrinkles in the crotch area make the whole look a mess to my eyes. But that can happen with regular pants too. (I speak from experience.) Is it the fabric, cut, and/or color that makes it so glaring here?

      • ankali

Oddly, I think this looks great while she’s sitting and awful when she stands.

        • kimmeister

Well yes, you don’t see the wrinkles when she’s seated.  I meant that it looks better standing BEFORE you have done any sitting like you see on the model, not on Naomi.  It’s when you stand back up that all the wrinkles caused by sitting show.

          • ankali

Ah, that makes sense. Being a short and short-torsoed person myself, I don’t wear jumpsuits (Naomi’s would probably make me look like an Oompa Loompa), so I wouldn’t know.

    • Aidan B

Cute and comfy-looking! Agree about the neckband, wish it was red. Love the shoes!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

that outfit looks like ron burgundy’s snuggie.  OUT.

    • Depot'er

With all the sadness in the world (ct), thank you T’lo for finding the fun and smiles! This is a GREAT ‘outfit to schmooze on a late night talk show outfit’! (not sure if it would work for GMA or one of the day shows, but this looks nice for what it is…basically lets plug away with that nice Fallon boy… the shoes are nice too (agree on the neck thing- bleck)

    • Introspective

i think you cant help but smile because she has such a killer smile in every shot. I want to go have a drink with her, designer pajama romper or not.

and i also want to steal her shoes and brush her hair. that is all

      • NC_Meg

Yea, she looks so happy and like she’s having a great time which really helps. I would normally hate an orange jumpsuit but I feel ambivalent about this one.

      • Carolyn Wilson

She also looks her age. How shocking! No fillers or botox. It’s so refreshing and automatically endears me to her. Perhaps because I can tell how she’s feeling.

        • Denise Alden

I thought the same thing:  how damned refreshing to see LINES on a woman’s face!

    • VioletFem

I like this. I would like it more if the pants portion was more fitted, but the look is still pretty stunning. Glad she chose a pair of gold strappy sandals rather than silly puddy tan pumps.

    • Renate Yerkes

Nopety nope. the color is lovely…for leather goods, not for an all-covering fabric body suit. this is, shape-wise, very unflattering as well.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks so cute and comfortable! It fits like ti was made for her, and if there were ever a show on which to try something quirky fashion-wise, it’s Fallon. Loving it (on her, in this instance).

    • another_laura

Gosh do I love that color!  Really dislike the banded puffy sleeves and, well, yeah, the shoes, too.  But that earthy red,  wow wow wow I must get a sweater in that color STAT.

    • GorgeousThings

Boy, in some of those pictures she reminds me of a young Hillary Clinton.

      • Anniebet

A (not so) young Hillary Clinton.

      • Goldie

I was thinking a young Helen Mirren.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Don’t worry, I’ll be happy to hate it for you.

    • n a

why oh WHY are the worst looks from the late 70s to mid-80s coming back??  The neon I can handle, but the crepe-y material, rusty colors, pleats & poufs– omg PLEATS across your boobs??  Come ON! we left these looks behind for a reason!

Naomi, you & Cathy Cambridge need to gather up all the Diana dresses and light a fire.  It’s all synthetic, so it will only take a sec & just melt into a big blob. guh!

    • lamamu

I loathe jumpsuits, but this girl is working some kind of voodoo magic on me because I actually just thought, “She looks elegant.” And I’m standing by it.

      • kschwarting

I think it’s the Naomi effect–she has such a lovely smile and presence that she makes things work when they should not.

    • E. D.

Like the hair, makeup, and jewelry.  Hate everything else.

    • MissMariRose

It looks a lot better sitting down, which is a good thing for a talk show appearance.

    • luciaphile

Sandals. I’m sticking to my guns on this: these should not be warn after Labor Day unless you are in the tropics or on the other side of the Equator. Otherwise, I love the look.

    • Kevin VanOrd

I disagree on the color. I don’t care for rust tones, as they remind me of upholstery and bad carpets. In fact, the chair next to her is almost the same shade!

    • j_am

Her face moves and has wrinkles!! I love her!

      • Amelia Logan

her forehead doesn’t move too much

        • j_am

I guess not… apparently my standards for non-botox are decreasing a bit :)

    • MilaXX

This worked in ways I would never have expected.

    • foodycatAlicia

The top plays with the 30s aesthetic that worked well for her in that nice floral dress, which makes me think the trousers would be better in a sort of Oxford Bag wide leg. Great shoes though.

    • B_C_J

Not liking  this at all. It’s a romper room outfit and the pleats at the waist are making me nauseous. However I do love the hair and the shoes.

    • Stella Zawistowski

I can’t believe I’m loving a jumpsuit (the wrinkled crotch excepted), but I am. Especially when she’s sitting down.

    • Imasewsure

I only like it on her when she’s sitting down. Still it’s nice to see a comfortable, cute pair of dress up PJs that you can wear on the RC. I think you need to be super tall though to really make this work.

    • Trisha26

Hate it and all jumpsuits with a passion. It’s doing nothing for her midsection and below that it’s creased.

    • Erin

Are those *crow’s feet*?! I want to kiss her.

    • Judy_J

She does look cute, comfortable, and relaxed.  I’m not a jumpsuit fan, but this is working for me (with the exception of the wrinkly midsection…perhaps a different, more forgiving fabric would have worked better).

    • Candigirl1968

I watched her on the show.  The keyhole was distracting.

      • l_c_ann

But did the keyhole add anything to the look?  I don’t think so, so maybe even the fashion greats could stand an edit (or two)

    • Kristy Evans

It’s terrible when she’s standing, but AMAZING when she’s sitting. Smart choice.

    • Monday1900

Um, no.  Just no.  Especially from Valentino!

    • tallgirl1204

      Hello, 1980!

    • zenobar

      SO TOTALLY 80s ON-J!!!!

(If you understood that, you are most likely a member of my tribe.)

(And remember: strangers are just friends who haven’t met yet!)

    • marlie

It’s cute! And just right for a sit-down interview.

    • therealkuri

I just want to put a belt on her. Otherwise, fine.

    • teensmom99

“we should hate it, but we can’t seem to work up anything but a smile at the sight of it.”–this may be the definition of what it means to have style.

    • SewingSiren

      I  do hate it.

    • kikisayshi

Looks great sitting down. Way to go, Ms. Watts!

    • snarkykitten

My aunt wore a version of this look to my wedding…but it was traffic cone orange and made of velour. *shudder* I don’t like this at all!!

    • Laylalola

    • nannypoo

Strange yet cute. I’d like to see a belt. I hate her messy hair. People seem to have fun on Jimmy Fallon’s show.

    • Laura

      I think she looks great!

      • Shawn EH

Agreed, totally fresh and relaxed. Better than some of the frumpy gowns she somtimes wears.

    • rumcg66

I hate this enough for both of us. Everything but the shoes is a total OUT for me. Uuugh.

    • jmorino08

    • ScarlettHarlot

I don’t like the color of the collar, but otherwise I think it’s fun and great for TV.

    • 3boysful

I think you guys have been into the eggnog.  For me, this is 30 lbs and a few wrinkles away from “Golden Girls.”

      • Anniebet

That was my first thought too.(Well, not Golden Girls specifically, but yeah…) Plus, in an age of painfully white and sparkling teeth, hers do lean toward the granny side as well.

        Love the shoes though.

        • Magatha

You know, one of the reasons I liked her in these photos is because her teeth look healthy but real. “Painfully white and sparkling” is where the bar is set right now, and it’s freakin insane.

    • Judy_S

      Love her and the look.

    • alyce1213

HATE everything about this, I can’t even begin to say how much. WTF is going on at her belly and above her crotch? And puffy sleeves? A pin tuck gathered top?  Nightmare — hideous jumpsuit.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

      ‘Taxi-crease’ city.

    • Natalie Bryan

I like it except for the pleats in the crotchety area. :)

    • bitterk

    • MishaFoomin

Who had the pleasure of pinning her mic… there? Whose idea was that? It’s all I can wonder when I look at these pics.

    • guest2visits

It’s cute but I would have liked the younger looking pinker shade, as apposed to the brick color; which verges on dowdy.

    • ccm800

I hate it so you wont have to.

    • RzYoung

Oooo, I hated it while she was standing but sitting down and it’s fierce as hell! that never happens.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

The hair and the pants suit together make me think that someday, she will play Hilary Clinton in the inevitable bio pic. I don’t say that like it’s a bad thing–the combination just calls up a resemblance that I’d never noticed before.

    • Jecca2244

hmm hmm hmm. i love it. maybe would have been better with pumps though? Not positive.

    • neofashionista

For me it works sitting down but once she stands it is over and looks like a scarlett jumpsuit maybe for shi shi prison like the kind Martha stewart went to

    • BrooklynBomber

Completely agree. Shouldn’t work, but she looks fabulous.

    • leftcoastpickle

      I’ll hate it for you.

    • momogus
