Miley Cyrus in Norma Kamali

Posted on December 17, 2012

Y’know, our first impulse is to inform Miss Miley that Girl, That is Not Your Dress, but upon reflection, we have to admit that it really IS her dress.

Miley Cyrus attends ‘VH1 Divas’ 2012 in Los Angeles in a Norma Kamali dress paired with Jean-Michel Cazabat shoes, and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Norma Kamali Fall 2012 Collection

There’s nothing wrong with this dress. It’s pretty sharp and bold, from where we’re sitting. It’s just that when you combine it with the buzz cut, it comes off a bit harsh and mature on her. Not “mature” in the Helen Mirren sense; more like the Charlize Theron sense. It’s sexy and chic in a very grownup woman kinda way. And yes, Miley’s all grown up, but she skipped past “dewy freshness” and barreled straight toward “hard-edged sexy” in her style evolution. Which is to say, this is of a piece with how she likes to present herself and even though we think she should make different choices at this stage in her life, it’s not an ugly dress or a bad dress.

Having said that, we’re not crazy about the hem length or the choice of shoe. She needs to go either longer or shorter in the hem for this to work proportionally. The shoes just seem like an afterthought.

  • She’s giving off a Pink vibe somehow. I agree about the length being wrong on her – I’d take it up to the top of the lowest cut-out.

    •  I somehow love the dress with that length paired with that heels. It’s like going back and forth on kinky and classy. It’s just the hair that’s killing me.

    • GorgeousThings

I saw the Pink channelling as well.

    • Little_Olive

I thought Amber Rose, but yeah, Pink is better.

I actually like her a lot more now. It must mean this is closer to her true self. She can carry that dress and buzz cut.

Wrong shoes, yes, but not that awful.

      • Celandine1

I think it would be a little to covered up for Amber Rose 🙂

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I was getting an Amber Rose vibe from this as well.  While I”m not a huge fan of dresses with cut-outs, MIley is wearing this pretty well. I agree with my fave uncles that either shorter or longer would have worked better.

      • I got Amber Rose, too. I actually like it, although agree on the shoes and the hem.

    • mjude

pink vibe is a perfect description

  • plinkiedoodle

gotta say…I love this dress on her.  Okay, you’re right about the hem and shoes, but what an overall statement!

  • Mismarker

Miley makes me want to start doing Pilates.  I agree, that hem needs to come up to just below the knee.  Otherwise, she is rocking this look.

  • SewingSiren

I like the length. If it were shorter I think it would start to veer into Adult Film Industry Awards territory. The hair and make up look like that crazy weight loss and exercise lady (I can’t remember her name).

    •  STOP THE INSANITY! (Susan Powter)

    • mmc2315

Exactly!  She DOES remind me of her!

  • Wow, Susan Powter’s looking refreshed! Shame about those office girl shoes, though.

  • In_Stitches

The dress fits like a glove and she’s got the bod to work it.  In the first shot, it looked like the cut outs were only on one side of the dress.  I was a little let down when I saw that they appear on both; it’s a bit much.

Love the newly cropped hair.  That flopsy cut she had for a while just wasn’t working.

  • Jadine Wilson

    Susan Powter “stop the insanity!!”

    • schadenfreudelicious

ROTFL! just snorted my coffee on that one!

    • Dot

I left my comment before reading the others. Dead ringer!

foodycatAlicia beat me too it: she is trying really hard to be Pink.  But not quite making it.  That said, the dress looks slammin’ on her, albiet a tad long.  The shoes are uber dull……

  • Gotta admit here that I’m really over the gratuitous cut outs thing.  Garments that shout, “look how sexy I am” at the top of their sartorial lungs pretty much bore me. That said, I do like the general shape of this dress, and even like the length, especially when counterbalanced with her short haircut.  I’m in total agreement about the shoes.  Something with more snap was needed here.

    • zarzee

Silver glitter 5 or 6 inch louboutins would have fit perfectly IMO.

    • Introspective

“at the top of their sartorial lungs” is a pitch-perfect turn of phrase that should be in regular usage on these here boards. loving this.

especially since certain looks really do try to scream at us (whether in good or bad ways), dont they? Case in point: Miley- to whose look I listened for a bit, but ultimately I decided to close my ears.

      • guest2visits

Yes to this.  And not remotely sexy, either.   So far – I don’t think she knows what is.
She always dresses somewhat desperate and shrill, almost jumping up and down for attention.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I definitely agree with you. SO sick of cut outs, especially the “Look, I’m not wearing any underwear!” cut outs. It’s unnecessary and will never not look trashy to me.

  • Sadly, the hem gives her cankles.

  • Funkykatt

Why isn’t Heidi wearing this dress? Of course, it would have to be much shorter accompanied with thigh high boots.

    • kimmeister

It’s not shiny enough for Heidi.

  • Let me channel my VH1 diva:

As a wife, mother, and person, I like the hem length but dislike the shoes.

  • lalagigi

Huge Norma Kamali fan since the early 80’s, when I wore ALL her sweatshirt stuff with big shoulder pads in college. Love the dress on Miley, but I think it called for more edgy shoes. I would have liked to see the dress a bit longer as well.

  • Girl looks healthy and happy and put together. I can’t really argue with that.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Same here.  I’d much rather see someone (especially a recent micro-managed Disney star) marching to their own beat and genuinely enjoying it, even if the rhythm sounds a bit off to some people.

  • hmariec19

Oh whatever. I just can’t with her anymore.  She looks insane.

  • SpillinTea

Im still living for her Glam Susan Powter look.

  • I think I might like this more if the cut outs were only on ONE side…a tad more (dare I say it) subtle/sexier? agree on the length, and she does look happy and relaxed here, good for her.

  • Kyle Crawford

wow – has she always been so pretty?

  • Natalie Bryan

I know many people hate the hair, but I still love it so much. I’m okay with the dress, but the shoes are a big ol’ meh.

  • E. D.

I’d take it up about two cutouts to make it more knee-length.  Don’t mind the plain shoes.

  • Dot

Her hair is starting to look like Susan Powter.

  • mozzer0906

She looks terrible.  From head to toe.

  • The comment really should be, Girl, That’s Not Your Hairstyle.  Agree the length is wrong, but I don’t know what would make it better.  Longer seems wrong, and shorter might push it into streetwalker vibe.

  • halleygee

I think she looks pretty and happy so I like it and the dress does look good on her. I am getting the Susan Powter vibe too but she is pulling off the hair.

  • She looks good, although a bra would have been nice.

  • mmc2315

I think I’d have preferred color blocking vs. cut-outs.  The silhouette on top with her hair style looks great.  At the bottom, with the hem and shoes, less so.

  • captrenault

    Dear Miley,
Going hard-edge sexy is fine if that’s what you want to do, but it’s sort of like drinking — you need to hold back in your 20s if you still want to be able to do it in your 30s and 40s, which is really where the fun is.
    Love, us.

    • Introspective

      like x a million if i could.

  • Judy_J

All I could think of when I saw this was Catherine O’Hara in “Best in Show”…..”I’m not wearing underwear!”

  • MarissaLG

I am so into Miley right now. I agree that the shoes could be better, but this look is really doing it for her.

  • nannypoo

I like this. It’s harsh and not attractive, but it suits her. I also like her hair, which also is not really attractive but suits her. I find her to be a tiresome, talentless attention whore. She usually looks so slutty that this more sophisticated look is a pleasant surprise. She looks a little like a serial killer in a mystery set in Germany, probably also starring Tom Cruise. She will come to no good end.

  • I really love her with the short blonde hair, and I think her style has definitely kicked up a notch. Kind of how I didn’t like Brittney’s music till she went a little bit crazy (no Seal).
I think the dress and the shoes are pretty darn perfect- letting the dress shine without a bunch of jewelry, mixed with the great hair- i love it.

  • Monday1900

Hem is way too long.  I agree with TLo, nothing really wrong with the dress just not the best pick with the hair and makeup (which aren’t doing anything for her except shouting “I’m Rebelling!!” which is probably just what she wants it to do).

  • decormaven

If you’re going to go there with the dress, you gotta go there with the shoes, too. The dress is wowza and the shoes are Sunday School teacher. Disconnect!

  • crash1212

I think she looks great – as is. Any shorter and it would’ve been slutty and I think the elongation kinda makes the statement of the dress and it doesn’t hit her at an unattractive part of her leg like so many of the longer dresses seem to on others. I actually like the toned down shoes – can’t imagine what else she might’ve chosen..maybe a bootie? At any rate…nicely done hard-edged Miley.

  • myristica_fragrans

i like it, but it’s 2 diamonds too long.

  • Far, far, far from Charlize Theron but as close as she can get.

  • I feel like she’s trying really hard to channel Sharon Stone. Miley’s round cheeks don’t really say “hard-edged sexy” to me though; I don’t really think she can pull off these looks.

    • ampg

Yes, “Sharon Stone 5 years past her prime” is the vibe I got.  I don’t think hard-edged sexy is bad at all, but I think it makes her look older here because there’s a lingering whiff of desperation about it.

    • kschwarting

I wondered whether she was trying to channel Annie Lennox, and she’s similarly not fierce enough for that look.

  • Ana_ragu

    Girl, that’s not your hair!

  • Pants_are_a_must

That’s a dress not a lot of women would look as happy wearing as she does, let’s be honest. It’s HER dress, but considering that, she should’ve had it hemmed for it to really be her dress.

The hair doesn’t work anymore, though.

  • l_c_ann

Reality checks for buzz cut blondes:  get ready for your roots to show their real color and for the look to remind the world you are too frugal to get touch ups as often as need be.  Mylie, it’s not just you, Charlize has the world buzzing (heh, heh) that she’s going gray along with her dark roots.

But, ladies, the black eyebrows with blond hair and skin color that looked good with your light brown hair  just clash, like two slashes of bad magic markers.

  • MilaXX

I don’t think it’s that bad. My only quibbles are the  hem length  and I think this would be better suited to Pink.

  • alyce1213

I’m not a fan of cutouts, but this works for me because the longer length mitigates the side flesh.
I love the dress, it’s so very Kamali, but I can’t stand Miley or her hair, so for me it’s great from the neck down only.
Even the shoes — I love a classic, fine leather, not-too-pointy black pump .

  • another_laura

Wow.  Norma Kamali.  The 80s are coming back at me like a head-on collision.  I had a Norma Kamali and I was so very very proud of it.

  • teensmom99

classic Kamale length.  It makes me want to get my down coat and go to Studio 54 (in a good way.  Having serious early 80s nostalgia).

  • IMNAngryLiberal

You go with your bad-ass self, Miley girl!  I’d have been much more understanding during your Hannah Montana years if I had known this was lurking under that pre-packaged Disney pop princess.

  • kmk05

If it weren’t long-sleeved I would like it better. This definitely feels mature. Her hair is killer!

  • ThaliaMenninger

This looks like the perfect dress for Hugh Grant’s old girlfriend, whatsername. Liz Hurley. But with the hair, Miley looks like an Annie Lennox knock-off. So I’m feeling a disconnect between that dress, the baby face, the hair and the shoes. It’s Annie Lennox’s hair, Justin Bieber’s face, Liz Hurley’s dress and Liz Taylor’s old shoes from Butterfield 8.

  • TSkot

Tacky to the point of skanky,

  • She’s been looking very “Pink” for a while now.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She might as well be naked, and something about the neckline is making her shoulders look much wider than they usually appear to me, but this definitely has a sort of Sharon Stone sexiness to it. I really think Miley is victim to what ails Lindsay Lohan and Brooke Hogan: an over-involved mother forcing her outdated (and overcooked) idea of beauty down her daughter’s throat. She’s still a pretty girl, no two ways about it.

  • Scott Isaacs

Serving up Brigitte Nielsen realness. I guess that shows my age and/or lack of connection with current celebs. Didn’t even think of Charlize Theron, Pink, or Amber Rose (whoever she is).

Anything that distances Miley from anything remotely resembling Mousketeer alumni culture is a breath of fresh air in my book. She can work this look as much and as often as she wants. LOVE IT.

  • Candigirl1968

The cut is growing on me, although, I wish she’d move the color to a light brown or at least a darker blonde.  I appreciate that Miley is trying to do sophisticated, even if she continues to go too mature.

  • Judih1

Send this dress to Gwen Stefani. Wrong for Miley for all the reasons you listed above.

  • ankali

I’m gonna go ahead and disagree that this isn’t an ugly dress, but I’ve never really liked the 80s-inspired looks.

  • Pterodactyl111

I support this. This is a positive direction for her to move in.

  • littlemissstrange

She looks a little like Ellen Degeneres. Not that I ever want to see Ellen wearing something like this. I… don’t know who I would want to see wearing something like this, it’s very hookery.

  • Always need to fight through my dislike of her to judge rationally.  The dress suits her, and I think the hair works too.  Shoes are boring, but at least they don’t detract.

  • baxterbaby

    Sigh.  I miss Norma Kamali.

  • bitterk

    She looks adorable

  • Jillaine13

I’d bet dollars to donuts that she got out of her limo ‘carefully’ after the Hathaway incident.

  • guest2visits

This is a flat out tacky dress.  It’s ‘edgy’ and ‘bold’ the same way a Venus Catalog is.

  • Not a fan of the cut-outs. It just makes me think that she’s not wearing any underpanties. And I can only hope that the dress is not a rental.

  • ccm800

the shoes suck but the length is not an issue for me. I think ankles up – she’s kinda killing it.

  • I think if you had no idea about who she used to be, you’d think she looked great. She looks ready for Max’s Kansas City.

  • Ann

Miley is going the way of Britney Spears… in a desperate attempt to lose the Disney good-girl reputation, she’s just going way too far the other direction.

  • Crystal

Yeah, hem length is awkward- but I prefer this to the hot mess that is Vanessa Hudgens.

  • She looks amazing.
