Michelle Obama Rings in Christmas

Posted on December 11, 2012

Whatever your political leanings, you’ve gotta admit, that Obama family, they’re pretty damn good-looking:

U.S. President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Malia and Sasha attend the ‘Christmas in Washington’ concert at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

We don’t much like Shelley’s look, though. On paper, the idea of a simple dress paired with a showy belt sounds good, but we don’t much like the color of the dress and the belt looks a bit on the gaudy side. We also don’t like the drapiness, which looks a bit unflattering.

On the other hand, Shelley’s mama looks FABULOUS in her silver suit and Miss Ross looks suitably diva-insane for the occasion, so there’s the that.

Awww, no Mrs. O 🙁 The dress isn’t offensive, but it’s doing no favors either.

Malia is turning into quite a little fashionista herself!

    • 3boysful

I like the neckline on her, but not crazy about the mashed-up bodice, and the skirt’s a tad too full and short to be flattering.

      • Yes, the proportions on Mrs. O’s dress are not good for her.  Who did that to her?

    • Clueless_Jock

I love the way the girls are wearing cardigans.

      • Sobaika

I’m eyeing Malia’s satin blue flats. Is it weird to want the same wardrobe as a teen?

        • ccinnc

If so then I’m weird too. Love the dress and cardigan together.

        • TheDivineMissAnn

I love her flats too.  I have a feeling she will be wearing a lot of flats as she gets older…she is almost as tall as her father and what is she…14-15?

As someone who has to stretch to get to 5’3, I am (Christmas) green with envy.

  • lalagigi

Shelley’s dress is saggy and sad. It’s too bad she doesn’t work suits more often cause her mama looks trim and terrific.

    • bxbourgie

Saggy.  That’s the right word.  It looks like it’s to big for her, like a size down would be perfect.

      • bxbourgie

Or maybe even tailoring the skirt for a little LESS fabric.  There’s too MUCH going on at the bottom… AND the top.  Ok, nevermind.  There’s no salvaging it.  Girl that is NOT your dress.  🙁

    •  Suits!! That’s a great idea. I wonder if there’s been an executive decision made to ensure she doesn’t look like, well, an executive.

  • Those girls, are fashion divas. Love it!  Shelly O, this is not your color or draping. I’m sad.

    • 3boysful

Notice how the girls have inherited the cardigan sweater gene?

      • formerlyAnon

I attribute it to a compromise: You may choose your dress, but for public appearances you have to wear a cover up if the shoulders are bare (and tights if it’s shorter than top of the knee).

They’ve done a stellar job of protecting the girls from criticisms about what they wear.

      • H3ff

The elder daughter also seems to have inherited her mother’s hairdo. It’s looking very mumsy.

  • Jessi03

Was not expecting to see Ms. Ross there, and her appearance in the final picture actually shocked me.  Then I grinned at her wacktasticness and all was well again.
In other news, the First Family is so adorable!

    • 3boysful

Ms Ross looks like the angel for the top of the tree!

  • I do love FLO’s shoes, though.

  • tallgirl1204

Mama R is shutting it down for me– Neutral and wrinkled are not Shelley’s friend, and Miss Ross doesn’t count, being of another universe.

    • I like Mrs. Robinson’s choices the best!

      • 3boysful

         Here’s to you, Ms Robinson!

  • Man, the tax payers have gotten their money’s worth out of those fab bronze kitten heels in 2012.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Oy, really?

    • CheriCPat

You are aware that the first family buys their own clothes, right?  I guess we can claim it as taxpayers to the extent that the president receives a salary, but it’s not like we buy their clothes.  Or that they don’t have other sources of income, of course, or they couldn’t afford to be president and first family.

      • In that case the Obamas have really gotten their money’s worth out of those fab bronze kitten heels in 2012, and the public got to ogle them for nothing.
Apologies. I live in Ireland where the tax payer foots the government’s outlandish expenses and salaries so they can looks nice and pick up tabs while they’re begging for money off Europe.

  • Janet B

Ms. Robinson’s suit is a scene stealer, except when Ms. Ross is in the picture.

  • God love Miss Ross. I bow to the crazy.

  • alyce1213

This is not good for Shelley — a misstep in a series of great Christmas dresses.
Call me old fashioned, but it’s winter — I’d like to see hosiery on her legs.

    • NDC_IPCentral

I’m in the hosiery camp as well.

    • I’m young and in the South and believe that hosiery is necessary in the winter (proof is that its 60 degrees out today and i have on a dress with hose!) Bare legs just don’t seem right.

    • I noted above, the girls have hosiery on, which is nice, since many under 30 women don’t even know what they are!

      • V V

I’m 21 and everyone I know wears tights because bare legs = hypothermia. (Maybe it’s just because I’m from the great white north!)

  • MaryMitch

I love the dress. The draping is interesting, and the belt is unusual and doesn’t look like it’s cutting her in half.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like the dress and the belt too, but I’m not sure the colors of them both go together.

  • Kyle Crawford

Heres to you MRS ROBINSON!   She looks fantastic!!!

  • BeeBeauNYC

Diana Ross has SERVED notice. Everyone else bow down and give praise.

  • Malia can pull off a cardigan like nobody’s business.

    • formerlyAnon

When Malia’s family is no longer the First Family and she’s a bit older, I expect her to be pulling off a pretty stunning array of ensembles.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

That is one good looking family!

    • MrsMaxPower

Seriously, they are a stunning family.  And they just look SO happy with each other and it doesn’t seem fake or forced. It makes me happy when I look at pictures of them because I’m a total sap. 😉

  • First Mother-in-Law looks FABULOUS and is a wonderful illustration of an older lady dressing age-appropriately without looking dowdy, dull, or frumpy.

  • mmc2315

I adore seeing cardigans on the girls.  Cute as can be!

  • Violina23

I still can’t get over how grown up & mature the girls look.

  • Love the color of Miss S’ dress. She is growing up too quickly.

  • nannypoo

I agree that FLOTUS is not looking her best here. But those girls and MILOPOTUS more than make up for it. And let us not forget the First Family Elves, who apparently flew in just in time to be adorable in this picture.

    • I can’t believe that’s the first time I’ve seen the acronym MILOPOTUS. Love it!! And yes, she looks fabulous.

  • kmk05

The O family looks so awesome, I don’t care. The dress isn’t offensive by any means, and Mrs. O’s makeup and hair are GORGEOUS. Her girls are so cute, and her mom is fantabulous. It all looks so ‘family Christmas card’, in a wonderful way!

  • I kind of like her dress. It’s the beaded belt that looks like it came from a tacky souvenier stand in Arizona that bothers me.

  • Introspective

Im sorry but Diana Ross is taking away any attention that I could give to the first family’s looks. cause she’s the founder, mayor and first lady of Drag Town and has no time for mere mortals in normal garb.

  • tresfabuleux

    First Grandma better WERQ!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That Michelle, how dare she make her daughters wear stockings?!? Screams of abuse should be ringing through the Internet about now. 😉

  • The dress would look better if it was a bit longer & had some flow to the skirt.

  • suzq

Mama Robinson looks mighty fine!  Diana looks like a Christmas fairy.  All she needs is a wand and little wings.

I miss Michelle’s smart sheath dresses.  Will we ever see them again?

  • SewingSiren

I love Michelle’s dress. It’s Byron Lars ( also love ). She’s worn it before , I think ,without the belt (which I don’t love). Sasha and Malia are lovely in their holiday frocks as well, sheer cardigans, sparkly belts, and all.

  • CeeQ

OMG DIANA ROSS!!! I can’t even see anyone else.

  • Agree. Not my fave.

  • Judy_J

I’m not loving Michelle’s frock.  I think it would look better if it was about 3 inches longer and had a different belt.

  • “suitable diva-insane” HA!

  • Cathy S

Mrs. Robinson wins. Malia is gorgeous.

  • formerlyAnon

I like the belt for a Christmas concert appearance. She needed something seasonal with such a subdued dress color. The dress squeaks in as a “like” mostly because there’s no misguided attempt to put jewelry on that busy bodice. Maybe I’ve just been struck down with holiday spirit because despite near universal complaints from the Kittens about it, I think she’s worn many far less-flattering dresses.

Those girls are at such a difficult age to have to be photographed. They are lovely, but so few girls their age can see that in themselves. I hope they’re kinder to themselves than my friends & I and my daughter & her friends were at that age.

Props to Ms. Obama’s mama and thank-you Ms. Ross pulling off your crazy diva gown!

  • BrooklynBomber

Those elves are too cute! They remind me of the Jimmy Fallon-Mariah Carey-The Roots video. (Go to You Tube and search Jimmy Fallon, Mariah Carey & The Roots: “All I Want For Christmas Is You” for some holiday cuteness.)

  • Qitkat

Although far from the best dress she’s ever worn, I don’t mind Mrs. O, and I love the festive belt.
It’s all so very charming, especially the newly adopted elves.

  • Trisha26

I don’t mind the drapey bodice but I truly dislike the gathered shortish skirt. Hope that style goes away in 2013.

  • miagain

    and what about the elves???
I have always disliked pale pink with gold… it’s screaming for silver!

  • zenobar

The top of the dress, and even the belt, would look smoking hot with a really luxe, tailored skirt.

  • EEKstl

Meh.  She’s done so much better.  Mama looks great, as do the kids and POTUS.

  • Bummer. The drapiness is all kinds of awkward. The girls look really good, but I wish Sasha had worn slightly lighter stocking…a muted grey maybe.

  • tardisten

Miss Diana is serving up some Holiday Barbie Realness and I absolutely love it. WERQ, diva.

  • I like Shelly’s dress, but not the belt. The First Grandma looks gorgeous, and Diana Ross looks simultaneously fierce and batshit crazy. And the Obama girls look really cute too.

  • Monday1900

Ms Ross looks like a combination of the Good Witch and the Bad witch!

  • DaveinAlamitosBeach

Wow, how did Chris Mann score the gig standing next to Michelle & Miss Ross?!  I mean I have his CD, but I thought I was the only person in America.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The whole First Family is so damn photogenic. It’s ridiculous to think they look this beautiful without some help from Adobe.

But oh, FLOTUS. Overshadowed by everyone else’s outfits, pretty much.

  • I’m going to take this moment to say there are few people in this world who should ever be dressed as elves–Liv Tyler and Cate Blanchett are about the only two I can think of. And I guess it’s ok if you can give adult consent. I don’t know, it feels weirdly costume-y/Halloweeny/slightly creepy to me. ?

I think this color is SO close to being beautiful on Shelley O– the gold is *almost* there. I agree it needs better draping and maybe a different belt (although I’m not totally opposed to the belt). And go Mrs.Robinson!!!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Malia is almost as tall as her mom now!

    •  As tall–Michelle is wearing heels, Malia is in flats. Man they grow up fast.

  • Lilak

FLOTUS sure is wearing lotsa lotsa gold lately.  Straight-up gold works a treat on her — not sure about the pale rose gold on this occasion.

And this dress just looks like a big mess of fabric … Anybody know if the back is interesting at all?

  • somebody blonde

Her mother’s suit is AMAZING. I think Shelley looks fine, but she could do a lot better. Love those shoes.

  • Patricia Gillett

Shelley’s dress get’s a B- in my book. Just OK.  But Grandma’s rockin’ the holidays. An A to you, Mrs. Robinson.

  • SapphoPoet

The First Grandmother looks sleek and fabulous in that suit.

  • Eva_baby

I actually like the dress on Michelle.  And yes her mother looks great.  But once again the younger set steals the show.  Malia is stunning.  That girl will be breaking hearts real soon.  And I love Sasha’s dress.

  • l_c_ann

    Mrs. Robinson….for the win

    • SRQkitten

      WERQ it Mrs. R!

    • RedAgain

OMG!  I have that suit!  It was from Neiman’s two years ago.

  • ankali

The First MIL does indeed look fantastic, though I agree that Michelle’s dress is draped oddly.

Since Obama’s pun-ridden pardons of the Thanksgiving turkeys, my husband and I have been amusing ourselves with imaginings that Malia has hit her rebellious adolescent phase and just rolls her eyes constantly at her father’s jokes in between photos. “Nice one, DAD, please embarrass me more in front of the ENTIRE COUNTRY.” They are such an adorable family.

    • formerlyAnon

       Oh you KNOW there’s eye-rolling.

  • MilaXX

Shelly’s dress may not be one of her better looks, but I love her anyway

  • another_laura

Ladies and Gentlemen, Miss! Diana! Ross!

  • bitterk

The world needs more Diana Ross

  • jmorino08

Never change Diana Ross! Never, ever change you crazy ballerina!!

  • quiltrx

I wondered who the lady in the gorgeous suit was!  You GO, MOT-FLOTUS!

And Diana, thank you for bringing the right amount of cray to the holidays.

  • After scrolling through the whole post all I could think is that Michelle’s Mom is thinking, ‘don’t get to close to me you cra-cray nut job.’ Oh Diana, we love ya’.
Shelley looks ok but not her best. The girls look fab as always especially Malia’s silver get up. Love!

  • It’s not a bad dress, but its not Mrs. Obama’s dress. Color works though. Diana Ross is totally diva-insane. Gotta add that term to my lexicon.

  • e jerry powell

Why am I wondering when it was that Malia got her first relaxer?

    I know, it’s a black thing.  Sorry.

  • Did you catch a glimpse of Mrs. O’s guns in the first picture. Daaym! I envy those upper arms.

  • I just love that photo of the President speaking where ALL of the women in his life look bored! You know it happens sometimes! If Mrs O’s dress was a champagne colour instead of the pink it’d work better with the belt .

  • stacey avelar

Designers keep trying to make their clothes more interesting with the ruching, origami crapola, peplum, draping thing. Mostly those add-ons serve to distort the figure of the person wearing them. I think those things can be done well, but it is rare to see them deployed in a flattering way on a NORMAL woman!
