Michelle Obama in Michael Kors

Posted on December 04, 2012

Shelley O got her sparkle on in a big, big way, darlings.

U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama attend the Kennedy Center Honors at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Michelle Obama wore a Michael Kors gown.

Michael Kors Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

We don’t want to be Scrooges, but isn’t this, we don’t know… just a bit much? Sure, it’s the holidays and all, and the Kennedy Center Honors are a particularly glamorous part of the First Couple’s duties, but that is a LOT of sparkle. On the other hand, we can’t help but love a First Lady who knows how to get her diva on. She’s never boring when it comes to her clothes; that’s for sure. And the shape is perfect for her.

Okay, nevermind. We talked ourselves into loving it.

    She exudes confidence!

    • JosephLamour

How much more exciting history class is going to be for fashion kids in 2075.

      • Panem_et_Circenses_disqus

Yeah!  Never mind the politics, I’m glad the President won the election just so we can see four more years of interesting fashion from the FLOTUS.

I cannot imagine Ann Romney being anywhere close to interesting or experimental with her style choices.

  • crash1212

    Love it.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed – I don’t actually like the dress much, but she looks fabulous in the dress.

    •  Well put.

    • The shape is great.  The gold lame (or whatever it is) is perfect for the event.  The collar thing is way too much.

      • Sobaika

I feel like it’s an either/or situation. Either gold lame or an intricate neck, not both.

      • EveEve

The collar may be kind of too much, but she’s not wearing all those sparkly bangles she likes, so there’s that.

        • I do also think that there’s an implication of “Hey, guess what?  I’m the First Lady of the United States and my husband just won re-election.  All you haters can suck it.”  And if that’s going on to any extent with this dress…?  I’m totally OK with that.

          • sojourneryouth

I kind of agree.  It’s kind of a “waiting to exhale” dress, and she is letting out a big “whoo!”  Four more years!!!

Also, I love that in the second pic, it looks like the president is looking down and thinking “Mmmmmm…that ASS!”  I know he probably isn’t, and I’m a dirty little bird, but I can never resist thinking about hot White House nookie with these two!

    • Clueless_Jock

Yes, the dress quite gaudy but she still exudes class.

      • Aurumgirl

I don’t think gaudy is the word–opulent, yes; gaudy…not so much, in a fashion season that includes so much tapestry and needlework fabric with beading, and gold embroidered black lace dresses that we’re seeing everywhere we look.  This is understated by comparison, and she does carry it off well.

    • kschwarting

      Nailed it!

  • greymain

    luv huh!

  • It’s a lot, but she deserves a chance to shine after the year she’s had.  I’m sure she completely outglammed the honorees.

    • Kristin McNamara

Good point. She missed her anniversary because of a damn debate! Homegirl deserves to get her glam on!

  • Absolutely love. If you can’t wear gold, glitter during the holidays, when can you?

    • YAELS

For REAL. I have a gold sequin Michael Kors dress I got at a thrift store that lives at the VERY VERY back of my closet, poor thing, until the ONE time of year I *maybe* get invited to a holiday party. It is so special and yet so sad.

  • Well, and in all fairness, it’s airing on December 26th, can’t get more holiday than that. At least it wasn’t red or green.

  • Plus Barak’s totally checking out her ass in the second shot, and Daddy like!  Well, you go Mr. President Sir!

    • BazoDee

Ha -he does have that face -although how you check out someone’s ass in a gown of that volume is beyond me -but then I’m a chick that mostly checks out a nice ass in a suit or pair of jeans.

      •  Well, he does know what that ass can do, which makes checking it out easier.

    • Barack STAYS, checking her out…if you ever notice him behind her he gives her body the once over, sideways glance pretty often & I love that about him & them!

      • Yeah, that’s my favorite thing about them.  They seem genuinely happily married.  He must hit himself over the head a few times a day for a) Being married to her, and b) Getting re-elected.  If he ever cheats on her I hope she breaks his face.

  • That is a dress that screams “I’m here for four more years! Get used to it, Republicans!”  I’m just kinda peeved I have to wait 22 days to see the Kennedy Center awards show on t.v.  Love me that silly David Letterman.

  • I think she looks a bit tacky.

  • DaringMiss

I was a little worried about how the volume of the skirt would flow over the hips, but the dress looks great on her.

I also think that her skin color is the reason it works.  Notice that the very caucasian model has a great “tan” in the picture – I think the designer understood that this shade of gold would not work on the overly pale, but would compliment darker complected women beautifully!

  • mjude

i’m glad you changed your mind.  she looks smashing!

  • I love it. I didn’t even need to talk myself into it!

  • cpjones79

Wait, Natalia Makarova wore a turban (edited because I thought it was Dustin Hoffman’s wife for a second)? That’s a diva if there isn’t one.

    • Kayceed

She caught my eye tout de suite!

    • gabbilevy

Shelly looks positively toned down next to Natalia. Both are well within appropos for the Kennedy Center Honors. No complaints from me!

  • BazoDee

That dress would swallow and spit out lesser women that tried to wear it. She looks amazing.

  • Jessi03

Love it!  But I’m a sucker for Christmasy sparkles.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I think it’s just about right for the occasion and her station, but I hate the shape of it on her. She favors these silhouettes that make her torso look tiny and her clothes look as though they are sentient, creeping up to choke her when she’s not paying attention. Try a fitted bodice with a dropped waist, Michelle. Just once!

    • kimmeister

I agree about the shape, it’s just emphasizing her short-waistedness.

    •  It’s particularly obvious when you compare it to the model, who has about 9″ more torso. But hey, I like her in it.

      • tereliz

        “…who has about 9″ more torso…”
And 9″ less bust. I think that’s part of it, too.

  • It’s totally appropriate!  Check out the lady in red on the left.  She’s hilariously decked out too!

  • Love it completely.  And the gold nails are FAB.

  • MrsMaxPower

It looks good in the photos that aren’t in the Kennedy Center. And in that second photo I don’t know if hubby is closing his eyes or checking out the rear view, but I approve either way.

Totally unrelated, my 12-year-old niece told me that she’s writing a paper on Michelle Obama for school because “she’s a good Mommy, smart, pretty and I want to grow up to be just like her.” My heart melted…I told my niece that I felt the same way.

    • CozyCat

Yes.  Somehow it really works in the shots with the handsome young men in black and gold dress uniforms in the background.

  • She looks great from the neck up, but the dress, and particularly the fabric, are hiddy.  The dress looks like it was made out of holiday wrapping paper.

  • Roosevelt 85

I’m sorry, she looks great and all…but how can you NOT talk about the woman in the FIERCE turban next to her?! She is giving me 70s realness!

  • alyce1213

I think this Kors is somewhat tacky and overdone.  It would be much more sophisticated and flattering, especially on FLOTUS, if the bodice were smooth and fitted instead of gathered, and the yoke toned down quite a bit.
Nonetheless, she makes the dress look as good as it can.   She’s doing the Duchess a favor here.

  • lehen

no way – check out the lady in the dress and matching turban next to her!  Nothing is too much next to a turban

  • amaranth16

Love it. Wish her lip were a little brighter – maybe a sheer rose or apricot gloss.

  • You’re the FLOTUS, it’s Christmas time, and you’re doing a Kennedy event! What more reasons would one need to get her sparkle on?

  • Kayceed

I am ready for too much, much too much and even way too much. I am sick of “exciting” being interpreted as sheer or bare. Bring on the gold lame and sequins and brocade!

    • Amen! Love this on her. And love the fierce dame in the turban too! Bring on the gold, the turbans, the jewels, the sequins, maybe a cape? Hell, we need a little Christmas (and I don’t mean Santa and his elves).

      • schadenfreudelicious

that fierce dame in the turban is ballerina Natalia Makarova!

  • I think it’s awesome on her. She accessorised it about right too. Love it.

  • miagain

You know, the Kennedy Center is RED from stem to stern… so a gold dress would look fabulous there.  The Washington Post reporters were all ooohhing and aaahhhing over her dress…

  • Cesar Negrete

She looks great. And the young man in the uniform in that last two pictures looks great, too… 🙂

  • VicksieDo

    STUNNING.  Full stop.

  • Love it better on her than on the model!

    • Sarah Thomas

Think it’s worth pointing out that this seems tailor made for a sister to rock. That wispy little model looks like she’s playing with a Diana Ross dress-up kit.

  • ojosazules

Our First Lady’s 24k sparkle puts the dress to shame. In a good way.

  • claudemtl777

Its just a bit jarring, cuz its been soooooo long since there’s been a FLOTUS who could pull off such a look. But the venue calls for it (Just look a Dustin Hoffman’s wife/date). Its regal and close enough to tacky to be considered adventurous…I love it…

  • Rand Ortega

Tis the season to be sparkly! Falalalala–etc.
Love the dress. It’s over the top but she pulls it off magnificently.

  • maggiemaybe

I think she was kinda born to wear this dress. She looks fantastic.

  • That soldier behind her is SEXY

  • Judy_J

I think it’s a fabulous holiday gown, and she looks gorgeous in it!

  • If she can’t wear it here, where CAN she wear it? I love it, personally. It’s a stunning gown.

  • CheriCPat

Thank you for talking yourselves out of your Scrooge moment, because no, this is not too much, this is PERFECT!  It would be better only if Mr. Kors (and every other designer in the world) would make clothes with an option for tall women, so that everything sits on the part of the body it was intended to.  Even that flaw, which trips up our lovely FLOTUS pretty often, is minimized here, though.  So proud to have her representing us!

  • LOVE it.

  • MsKitty

I think she looks great. IMO the top half of the dress is especially flattering to her proportions, a more buxom woman wouldn’t have been able to pull it off as well.

  • She looks amazing! Love, love, love this. And I have to say that our president looks pretty good too!

  • I love it on her… She looks gorgeous in that color!

  • Kristy Evans

She did it right – upswept hair, simple makeup and jewelry – all to let the dress (literally) shine. Perfection. DIVA realness. Also that soldier/guard guy in the background is very hot.

  • I’m going to pretend that the POTUS is checking out her ass in that one shot. Love it.

  • formerlyAnon

Thank goodness you guys talked yourself into loving this, I’d have had to disagree in dismay and sorrow. As stated: Holiday season, Kennedy Center Honors, First Lady of the U.S.!, and she looks great in it.

  • Inspector_Gidget

Every time she wears something a little less than fabulous, I stop and think of what Anne Romney or Cindy McCain would be turning out.  Fierce FLOTUS (still) in the house!  Yay.

  • unbornfawn

    I love it!

  • Good thing you did because it’s awesome and really, it isn’t too much. It’s the Kennedy Center honors. It’s TV. It would be too much for a state dinner and most everything else I can think of that she would attend, but it’s movie stars and network TV, she looks just right. If ‘just right’ is frickin fantabulous.

  • julnyes

That turban is killing me and bringing me back to LIFE!

  • She looks like a gorgeous Christmas tree ball. And that picture below the model should be captioned “When a man loves a woman.”

  • Trisha26

It’s beautiful and befitting of FLOTUS.

  • Sarah Thomas

Never thought I’d hear a main T Lo complaint be ‘hmmm, maybe this is TOO fabulous…’

  • ShayShay

Once again FLOTUS moves the waistline way up to just under her “girls.”  She never met a look that she didn’t turn into empire.  This is her usual formal uniform.  I guess she knows what works for her and she’s sticking with it.

  • Kirsten Henry

she looks good! sexy doorman too!

I wonder why the photos from above look better than the ones from below, as far as sparkle goes…

  • Jessica O’Connell

I think she looks fantastic. And having served at the KC Honors, she is by new means the most sparkly person there, I can assure you. Plus she doesn’t take it into tacky like many do. Instead, she swept back her hair and just put on a lovely pair of earrings. I love it all.

  • tereliz

I think this is a holiday dress if I ever saw one, and works particularly well on a woman of Ms. O’s exquisite coloring. I like that she doesn’t wear Kors much and when she does it’s for a special occasion. So no, I don’t think it’s a bit much given the circumstances. The woman next to Dustin Hoffman is wearing Gloria Swanson’s entire wardrobe from Sunset Boulevard, after all.

    • Marjean Fieldhouse

when you are being honored at the Kennedy Center you get to channel whoever the hell you want 😉

  • bertkeeter

Like but neckline just a touch high…looks like it’s cutting her…not what you want to do to the First Lady!

  • clevRcat

I think she’s spectacular!  Also – would LOVE to get a better look at Makarova’s outfit (cause I love a matching turban).

  • decormaven

She’s working it. So proud she is our FLOTUS!

  • nannypoo

I think it’s the perfect amount of sparkle for her in her position at that event. I love it.

  • StellaZafella

I love it all, unconditionally! GO FLOTUS!

  • LOVE this, and love the way the sequins/jewels reflect up onto her gorgeous face and smile.  You GO, FLOTUS!

  • I think POTUS is totally checking out her butt in the second photo.

    • MilaXX

He checks her out often. I notice it all the time in photos of them together. It’s sexy as all get out.

  • Imasewsure

I think I like the dress on her but not the hair and makeup which seems as heavy as the dress. Still she looks great.

  • I love it.

  • FAB-U-LOUS FLOTUS!!  She’s a fuckin’ star; she SHOULD sparkle!

  • Ughhhh i want that dress but with a full skirt and chopped right below the knee.

  • NCDFan

    Go Michelle. Fabulous.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    W.O.W. Way to sparkle, Shelly!

  • e jerry powell

I’m still one of those who doesn’t quite get the concept of a resort collection.  The gown seems seasonally problematic.  Is it for summer or winter?

  • snarkykitten

I remember going  to the Kennedy Center to see the Nutcracker as a little girl. This seems like the perfect dress for Shelley O. to wear to the Kennedy Center Honors

  • Molly F

I love looking at her and the president!  They look so happy and it’s contagious.

  • amy

Could Mobama please wear her waistline at her waist, for once?   The underboob belt is killing me. She’s a tall lady, but so is the runway model, and the dress lies at the model’s waist just fine.

    • I think that is her waist. If it were lower it would make her look hippy.

    • Marjean Fieldhouse

      runway is
      1. 12-years-old
      2. selected from a herd of models specifically because her body type most flatters the dress
FLOTUS is an actual human being – the fault lies with the fitters for not adjusting the dress accordingly

  • CeeQ

I like it but the gold skirt pushes it into over the top for me a little. Can’t she’s rocking it though =)

  • notdorothygale

    Gorgeous and very flattering.

  • MilaXX

I can’t not love Shelly. I wish she had her hair out, but very minor quibble.

  • Sorry, too high waisted and just no. If you are going to wear high end designers, at least try and do it well. Hair, makeup, all of it looks bad.

  • Love it, but wish the belt were a little lower.

  • kikisayshi

DO IT, FLO! Love the glam!

  • artgirl9

She’s always great to look at and I’m always proud that she’s our First Lady.  This look is festive and she looks regal.

  • Anathema_Device

Gasp-inducing and WERQ-worthy, in my book. Love her in this.

  • Alexandra Pimenta

Oh! I have something to add! lol  Those *incredible* earrings are from brazilian ( radicated in NY) designer Moritz Glik. I actually know him! 😀 And I can tell you first hand that his pieces are INCREDIBLE. He was the only designer to win Best Diamond Piece at the Couture Jewelry Show in Las Vegas twice in a row and was nominated another couple of times.

His stuff is all handmade and he hands signs them all with his name and the amount of diamonds in them.  It’s out of this world. Trust me, I tried most of them…lol

Here is a close up of the earrings:  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/Totalele/moritzobama.jpg

  • If this dress is too much for the FLOTUS to wear to the Kennedy Center Honors, then where could anyone wear it? To the Academy Awards, I suppose, but then you would probably be criticized for looking like an Oscar. I think it’s just about perfect – a sparkly gold dress for a super formal occasion, being worn by a beautiful and elegant woman. Works (or werqs) for me.

  • guest2visits

This was perfect, she looked amazing in it.

  • Cynica

    First Lady of FABULOUS!

  • surfergirl70

    She looks outstanding.  IN.

  • julesj

I love the dress…just once, once, I would like to wear a dress like that, and be all-glittery and gold, and maybe slightly tacky.

  • SewingSiren

I think it looks great on her. Perfect for the occasion.

  • judybrowni

FLOTUS makes the dress: on model it looks like bad Christmas tinsel.

  • quiltrx

Love it!  You get that glitzy Kennedy Center shit on, FLOTUS! 🙂

  • barbarienne

I think it’s exactly the right amount of sparkle. And I hate sparkle.

  • FridaStaire

Love the sparkle. And is that Gloria Swanston on the left in the first pic?

  • Francie Worley

President Obama is totally checking out Michelle’s bum in the second photo. Also, she looks beautiful.

  • I was gonna say, with your “a bit much.”  I think she looks great and it’s totally appropriate.

  • LuLusLemons

    Christmas tree topper fashion.

  • It is a bit much, but in a good way. While I do like it, the top makes me think of Jiffy Pop and I have this irrational concern that if she gets too close to heat the whole top is going to explode with popped corn.

  • CrazyAuntie

I think it’s perfect for this event.  She looks spectacular!

  • littlemac8

If I were ever in the position to dress up as a Christmas tree ornament, this is the gilttering number I would choose!!!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

For a Gala its Great and Gorgeous and Glittery, so “Go Girl!”

  • Its such a beautiful Christmas Holiday dress 🙂

  • Vera L-

Love that bronzey/gold color. She looks amazing.

  • twocee

Ooo, I don’t know.  It hits my inner magpie and all I can think is “SPARKLIES!”  So, yeah, I love it.

  • I bet she picked this out before the election when she thought the Kennedy Center Honors might be her last big public appearance and she wanted to go out with a bang.

  • LOVE IT!

  • Luke Pacheco

I think the dress is stuh-hunning on her.  I think this is one of the few events where that level of sparkle is appropriate.

  • Candigirl1968

It’s a great dress for the season and for the occasion.  And POTUS looks delighted with it himself.

  • librarygrrl64

The shape and the color are STUNNING on her!!!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • patticake1601

I love the dress but would have loved if he gold was more gold, not that greenish gold. But…she looks great!!

  • Sweetvegan

Wow – it’s like the dress was custom designed just for her!

  • mhlmh

if you talked yourselves into loving it, why did you leave the negative part in? just asking.

    •  The whole point to this site is to talk about the clothes people are wearing and to entertain people while doing it.
