Michael Kors Holiday 2012 Ad Campaign

Posted on December 05, 2012

Darlings, for your Pretty of the Day, we present the Michael Kors Holiday 2012 ad campaign, featuring genetically superior young people in fabulous clothes heading into a no-doubt fabulous event with other genetically superior people in fabulous clothes. For isn’t that what the holidays are all about? Wear your sunglasses at night and make out with a stranger, darlings!

So many sunglasses! Good thing they’re holding on to each other – they’d totally trip in that dark room otherwise!

(also – I want a shiny purse too!!)

  • I hate ads like this. It’s so cluttered and shiny and annoying. Meh.

    • G

Yeah.  And you can’t even see the clothes.

    • Pennymac

Agreed. I can’t get my eyes to focus anywhere. I feel like ads like these make me work too hard. Then again, if I was ever given a laziness award, I’d probably send some one to pick it up for me.

    • Little_Olive

Yes, we’ve commented on this before. It’s the same shot than the Safari/resort/Whatever campaign only with a little less bronzer.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Mmm sunglasses at night.  Rick Springfield and Corey Hart touring together in about 1984 or 85.  Sigh.

  • Red purse – so unhip for such a hip party

  • StellaZafella

Is that Fan Bing Bing in the black sequins? I wanna be at that party…I’ll carry a tray!

    • Pauline Poon

      That’s Shu Pei, she’s a Chinese model.

      • l_c_ann

Please tell me Shu Pei’s dog is a Shar Pei.

  • Well, at least this one isn’t a sea of beige.  Would have been nice if he’d let the people of color a bit closer to the lens, though.

    • gabbilevy

At least there *are* people of color in this MK campaign! It’s a nice change.

      • Everyone is a people of color. They all look Grey! Guess there is too much dust in the big city.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Yay,evening pants!

  • marilyn

So, they are selling watches, purses and sunglasses.  Too bad.  The dress in the first shot looked great.

  • MilaXX

I like that first green dress.

  • kikisayshi

Totally just like my real life. Except without the genetic superiority and the fancy clothes. And with a bunch of kids in lieu of all of the fabulous people.

    • DeborahJozayt

You have a black and Asian child? That’s so Jolie-chic!

      • kikisayshi

Well, I don’t know about that but I do have a gaggle of children that could almost rival the Jolie-Pitts. I’m hip like that.

  • hughman

Look, we brought our Black and Asian friend!

  • formerlyAnon

If I’m remembering correctly, I think this year’s crowd is having more fun than last year’s. The green ensemble in photo #2 is a little much: disco fabulous OR monochromatic shiny green. Not both.

  • Imasewsure

“Wear your sunglasses at night and make out with a stranger, darlings!” Damn, I miss my 20’s!!

  • Pants_are_a_must

He tries so hard for the young-n-chic vibe, but the clothes are absolutely investment banker Christmas party.

    • Little_Olive

Hahah this, so much. I guess it’s intentional though -like that upper class young scene is really what the Middle-age Midtown crowd wants.

  • filmcricket

I’m so lucky I hit this age in the mid-90s, the pressure to be fabulous wasn’t as extreme. I would have failed miserably.

    • Anathema_Device

hahaha…well said. I hit that age earlier, but I agree. It seems much more expensive for the regular gal to be fabulous these days. (I’m also glad I got married and had my kids before the wedding and birth industries turned everything into an excuse for excess and “LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME!”)

  • crash1212

Eh. Not feeling it…but I do love that red bag.

  • Zippypie

    Where are the clothes?

  • J’adore le green.

  • Anathema_Device

That first green dress is the standout. The rest is a blur of generically expensive.

  • M’lady Hair Tuck is crying out for a $500 headband.

  • I would like to go to that party. I would like to be thin and fabulous enough to go to that party. And I would like to take any one of the male models as my date!

  • ccm800

    Kors is so damn dull.

  • Judih1

I like MK because he has diversity among the models in his ad campaign. After seeing the Donna Karan clothes (which I love) on nothing but young, thin, white models (which I don’ love) I prefer to spend my money with MK

  • thats ew.

  • The green woman stepping out of the car feels 1970’s studio 54

  • annie_wonder

Look, one thing I’ll say is at least they’re smiling, unlike other ads where the models look like they’re in pain / miserable / bored of EVERYTHING –  even though the whole point is to make their lives look so much cooler than ours. These folks are open about how smug they are.

    But yeah, boring ad.

    • Little_Olive

“These folks are open about how smug they are”. Made my day.

  • New Michael Kors ad, same as the old Michael Kors ad.

  • i dont dislike kors, but his campaign are always so uninspiring.

    • With all of his “Fashion Forward” talk, this is what he puts out? Nothing wrong with them, but they’re so….safe.

      • This is a collection, not a reality show design competition.

        •  True, and I do understand that- Fashion Forward gets notice, but it’s not what gets sales.

          • formerlyAnon

No doubt intentional – way more people can justify buying themselves a Kors watch than a Kors ensemble.

        • other big and commercial brands have more artistic and/or interesting campaigns. chanel, for example.

          • Yes, but that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about the mistake of applying his Project Runway critiques to his own collection.

Besides, it would be weird for Kors to put out a campaign like Chanel’s. Totally different brands with totally different aesthetics. Kors is classic American sportswear with a touch of glamour. It’s never been cutting edge nor has it ever tried to be.

          • first paragraph: point taken

second paragraph: im not saying kors should have campaigns that look like chanels. im saying it would be nice if kors had campaigns that were as interesting as chanels.

          •  I’ll save the snarks for the next season of Project Runway …although the last PRAS episode was actually good!

  • ShayShay

Nothing exciting to see here people.  Move on.

  • SewingSiren

I wouldn’t like being at this party. Firstly , none of these people would talk to me. And secondly I couldn’t afford the drinks at the bar. Thirdly I don’t like carrying gigantic bags with gold findings.  Fourth I’m ugly so I obviously wouldn’t be invited anyway.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Safe and shiny.

  • afabulous50

  • decormaven

I feel like this screams “Feature the bag!” “Feature the watch!” I’m too distracted by that one-note to take in the entire scene.

  • Judy_J

It all looks so forced and unreal.

  • bertkeeter

There are cargo / container ships headed from China loaded down with all this stuff…..

  • Title it “Air-brushed Douche Bags with Handsome Black Man.”

  • I just read an article this morning about how emerald green was the Pantone Color of the Year.  I see MK read it, too.
Not a fan of those watches–somehow such a huge face and thick band looks wrong (a) with party wear, and (b) on a woman’s delicate wrist.

    • formerlyAnon

Strangely those watches are very popular with my daughter’s (19 year old) cohort. Both that style, and specifically MK. The low end of his watches run under $300.00, even when not on sale, and several of her friends have bought one – with money they earned themselves.

I don’t get it, At.All. But then I’m way too faded hippie for any of them to expect me to.

  • Love Karmen and Simon again!!! Love them!

  • lrober03

Look! We included a person of color!
Please don’t notice that we put him in the back or corner of every single shot!!

  • Lots of big teeth! Can’t see many of the clothes but now I want an emerald green monkey fur.

  • tereliz

Oh, these people again? I hate them already.

  • editrixie

Oh look! One nonwhite person…no, two! Gosh, Kors is making progress.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

The Token Black Guy (TTB)  looks good. Wish I could see more of him MK.

  • Derek_anny

So, first impression of that first picture:  She’s carrying around a stuffed blue eagle or something as a purse.  WTF IS that?
