Krysten Ritter in Hervé Léger by Max Azria

Posted on December 19, 2012

Miss Krysten was clearly NOT feeling wishy-washy when she chose her outfit for the night. If nothing else, this look is declarative and definitive.

‘Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23′ star Krysten Ritter celebrates her 31st birthday at The Bank in Las Vegas in an Hervé Léger by Max Azria dress paired with Rachel Zoe shoes.

Hervé Léger by Max Azria Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kinga Rajzak

It’s like she’s at a Game of Thrones-themed nightclub or something. Those things on her breasts look like luggage tags. We wonder if you’re suppose to flip them over to see who to send them to in case they get lost or separated from their owner.

This is definitely a look you need to commit to selling, once you put it on, but we’re not sure it’s working for her. She’s at least Master’s-level in her clothes-wearing abilities and could possibly someday get up to PhD-level, but this dress is beyond her current capabilities. It needs a whole hell of a lot more attitude than she’s capable of and probably a bit more of Swinton/Blanchett-style poise to pull off.

Or maybe it’s just a cray dress.

      That’s a very – complicated – dress, but I’m kinda loving it!

      • Sobaika

I do too. I think she needs maybe a bit more attitude and better makeup and hair to make it fully complete. Her weird bangs pushed over to the side like that are not cute.

        • tereliz

I agree. The dress could work. But I think the problem with the hair and makeup is that it’s actually too cutesy for this—not that her bangs look good, lol, they look awful. But her old shortie, spiky plastered across her forehead bangs would have worked better, with more smoldering eyeshadow and a wine/bordeaux lip. Or she could have scraped them back á la the model and gone for a sleeker hairstyle. Her standard pony is just too preppy/boring. Sometimes a dramatic/edgy dress just needs more dramatic/edgy styling and I think thats where she missed her mark.

          • AmeliaEve

I agree — a smoky eye and kick-ass manicure would show she means business with this outfit. And her hair would totally suit a Bettie Page look. The complicated dress would be set off best by more sleek hair, I think.

      • Isadora Paiva

It’s a complicated jacket over a normal dress. She took it off later and the look was completly different. I liked both, though the boring hair kind of detracts from the bolder look with the jacket.

        • tereliz

Is it a “jacket” or is it just a harness with sleeves? I haven’t seen any other pics, must go look for them later!

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

Totally agree. I bet editorially it would function much better.

Also, is she growing out her bangs or did she decide to do her own hair? It was more distracting than the boob latch-tags.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I think it works on her, but it doesn’t WORK, know what I mean? I think better styling and a bit more attitude would have elevated it. Something about the hair says “I took too long figuring out the straps on this dress, so I had to rush through this.”

      • Judih1

        You nailed it!

    • Vaniljekjeks

I really really love that dress.  I’m just a little disappointed there isn’t a strap lower down for me to attach swords.  I’d wear that dress all the time if that were the case.

      • AthenaJ

I’d rock this dress at the Ren Faire.

        • Vaniljekjeks

           We could match!

    • lovelyivy

Totally agreed- this dress overwhelms her. She looks awkward and uncomfortable, and her hair and makeup are just not at the same level of WOW as that dress (the hair in particular).

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Its pretty cray cray, I gotta say.  And I am HATING on the exposed zip in the back. Regardless of the intent and styling of this dress, it looks like a poorly chosen afterthought.

    • charlotte

It looks a bit like a scoliosis corset turned into a Game of Thrones dress.

    • teensmom99

If by “cray cray” you mean horrible then I totally agree.

    • SewingSiren

She looks fine. But not her usual level of fabulous.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Everything above the neck says “meh,” and that’s a part of the problem, I think.

    • B_C_J

Perfect example of an overworked dress. The dress is wearing her.

    • Funkykatt

I kind of think she looks like she’s always in training for a dominatrix.

      • DeborahJozayt

        Matrix: Reloaded, the Musical!

    • Emily Giovanni

I think I would love it on her if it did not have all the crazy straps above the waist.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s crazy, alright, but the right woman could pull it off.

ETA: And that woman, unfortunately for her, is not Krysten.

    • Introspective

This dress is way too labor intensive on the eye. Full on monet in my opinion.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I don’t quite know what to make of this…..she’s trying for some kind of steampunk/B&D/Kit Kat Klub look, but lost her enthusiasm after she put on the dress & shoes.  If she had followed up with more attention to her makeup and, especially, her hair, she might have brought this off.  (Not that I’d like the look any better, but I do admire commitment and conviction in fashion photo ops.)

    • PeggyOC

She trying, but this is not her dress.  Frankly, it’s a bad dress.  The skirt is just hiddy.  What’s with the granny flange on a edgy piece like this?

    • E. D.

My only complaint is that the sleeves are too long.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Looks to me like someone’s hoping to take her birthday spanking to a whole ‘nuther level.

      • http://thoroughly-me.blogspot.com/ thoroughlyME

I would think that on one’s birthday, one would want to wear something easier to get out of in a hurry.

    • Julie Parr

I think this dress from the collection would be better on her. http://www.style.com/fashionshows/complete/slideshow/F2012RTW-HLEGER/#14

    • Tatiana Luján

She looks as if she were too tiny for the dress. And I hate the exposed zipper.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I don’t like where the gores in the skirt start – straight skirt or flippy skater skirt but not that mid-thigh almost-mermaid thing. I also don’t like the booties with this.

    • Julie Fountain

That leather sleeve/halter/luggage tag thing looks like a separate piece. I think without it, in just the dress, this could have been cute.  Hate the hair though.

      • l_c_ann

The Daily Mail said she wore the halter to the occassion and took it off before leaving for her next stop.

    • Judy_J

Looks like E.L. James’ idea of a bondage outfit.

    • afabulous50

It looks like an S&M device…not that I’d know of course….

    • catherine clements

All I can think is “Edward Scissorhands.”

    • Janet B

I’d like to see someone else wear this dress and convince me it’s not cray cray.

    • filmcricket

The Fug Girls pointed out that this is an Audrey-bot kind of dress. I’m not sure it’s as ethereal as the stuff Mara usually wears – there’s no random sheerness or floatiness – but it’s certainly out of Ritter’s wheelhouse, which has tended to be retro-kooky rather than dominatrix-lite. Better shoes and better hair would have helped. I just can’t imagine celebrating one’s birthday in something this hot and uncomfortable-looking. How can you enjoy cake and champagne if you’re sweating through your leather sleeves?

    • captrenault

Hair needs to be a touch more severe if she’s truly going to get her Sean-Young-in-Blade-Runner on.

    • nannypoo

She looks like a cute little dominatrix. Definitely not working.

    • FrayedMachine

This suddenly makes me want to design a bunch of really funky sci-fi outfits … which means I kind of love this.

    • theblondette

I kind of love it, mostly because she looks so damn pleased with herself. Also, WHAT WOULDN’T I GIVE to go to a Game of Thrones themed nightclub.

    • Monday1900

Love the dress but I don’t think she has an edgy enough attitude/look for it.  Also, think the shoes are all wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

It’s a cray dress, but it needs fierce hair and makeup to be fabulous. Her “workout pony” hair, makeup, and posture says “I’m a nice girl who borrowed this dress” not “Look into my eyes- I will stomp on your heart with these booties and keep it moving if you test me.”

    • quiltrx

I think that’s a pretty cray dress, in the most wonderful sense of the word.  My only complaints are that the back should have been simpler since the front is so elaborate, and that the zippers and buckles should have been silver.

I think she needed a much more edgy hairdo to go with this and really ‘sell’ it, though.  The hair looks like ‘waitress just got off her shift and put on her awesome dress’.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I like it and think she looks good, but I agree with my fellow commenters that the hair is not working for me.

    • Annabelle Archer

Hmmm, I’m always so nervous when I disagree with the wise and and world savvy TLo, but disagree I do.

I think her attitude and commitment to the look are on par. I’ll go so far as to say I don’t think I would care for this on La Blanchett with her soft, blonde, ethereal self.  And for the Swinton, frankly it’s not weird *enough*.

It’s kicky and bitchy and all signs point to Ms. Ritter being super kicky and likely a little bitchy. But in the best possible way, of course.

      • out for a walk

Yeah, I kind of love it. But apparently I am super biased in her favor. Ms. Ritter has to go pretty drastically wrong for me to disapprove. I would have picked different shoes maybe, is all.

Also, I think this every time she’s feature on here, but I so hope that someday Krysten comes out as a TLo enthusiast, thus allowing us to forever after refer to her as “Bitter Kitten Krysten Ritter!”

    • Elleachaudaucul

This looks like something Kanye West would pick out for Kim Kardashian.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

I may be way off base but I think she needed sleeker hair.

    • bertkeeter

Do you need a key to get out of thios bondage crap? Example of what is shown on the runway should STAY on the runway.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Well, I’m off to my “50 Shades of Grey” audition.”

    • Zippypie

I love the dress, but you’re so right – she needs some self-assured composure a la Blanchett.  She’s just too starlet du jour here and it doesn’t work.  And the shoes are wrong.  Too clunky.

    • KSpence

Her hair is hurting my feelings.

    • Cathy S

I like it actually. It’s weird and complicated, but kind of cool.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

She needed to steal those Tom Ford boots from Anne Hathaway, and perfection!

    • Celandine1

Yeah, she’s not quite making this work. Pack it up and send it to ERW, she can handle it.

    • trisker

seriously cray dress — for no apparent reason.  looks like S&M wear.

    • judybrowni

I can’t get over the shoulders on that dress: they look like the hanger was left in ‘em.

    • Trisha26

I agree, it’s beyond her. And it’s cray.

    • TieDye64

I dunno. Despite all the (too many) elements on the dress, she’s almost pulling it off. Perhaps a severe, sleeked back pony and different makeup would make this work.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I kinda hate it.  She looks like the spokesbabe for Goodyear.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the outfit, but  somehow the pose and attitude are too sweet. She should be giving us , “I’ll cut you!” but this feels more like, “hi! like my dress?”

    • erinbinek

      I love it.

    • jw_ny

The part that really kills this outfit, aside from her lackluster posing and selling of it, is the dropped waist with the flared skirt.  If this were tighter, more like a pencil skirt, I think it’d be a vast improvement.  Not feeling the boots either…

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/XOKQHEUXULPSTIWKTOCIPKX4AI Emma

I happen to think she cuts a striking silhouette in this. But I honestly thought that thing sticking up from her boobs was a crucifix when I saw the first photo.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

      Hate the boots.

    • SouthernGirlRena

Love her, hate the dress.  What I really want to talk about are her eyes.  Are they really that stunning color or does she wear some kind of colored contacts?  I don’t think I have ever seen that light brown/gold color.

    • adnama79

It would work better with a sword or a laser gun.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I don’t much care for her,  but she looks great in this (body-wise, she isn’t quite selling the look). I think it’s time someone put her in a sci-fi film already!

    • Aurumgirl

But a woman shouldn’t have to put attitude into effect to save a dress that just can’t make its own presence felt and justified.  It’s an ugly look, but she’s beautiful and young and she can look vivacious and sexy and all of that. Poor girl has to look good in spite of the dress, and that shouldn’t happen.

    • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

I blame the dress. I love the top, but the dropwaist twirly-girly skirt ruins it. I couldn’t think of another star who could pull that off with such a discordant note in the design.

    • http://twitter.com/magadutari Ma. Gabriella Dutari

I seems to me she’s afraid of her working her forehead and tried to cover some parts, but this is strange.

    • barbarienne

I love the outfit (someone with my username damn well should) and I think she’s carrying it off.

Hate that zipper, though. I am so over (a) the visible zipper and (b) using the fabric side thingies as a strap of the garment instead of being sewn to anything.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

It’s a crazy dress.  Looks like a costume from some bad sci fi movie.

    • guest2visits

I think the dress looks good on her; however – even though her boots are similar to the model’s – I just don’t think they’re
strong enough. They almost look rustic compared to the edgyness of the dress. Maybe tall boots or just exotic looking heels
would fit better.  Or maybe it’s a just a crazy dress.

    • pokokpuding

      K. Ritter, pack this up and send it to K. Stewart.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

      it looks painful.

    • kittenwithaquip

I think it could be a great dress had he not put that flouncy skirt with it.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

I don’t love it but I think she’s selling it as much as anyone can.  Because it isn’t the best example of this sorta thing.  I’ve seen more interesting/beautiful BDSM wear than this, and this is one of those “inspired by” type things.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I like everything from the neck down, but she killed it with the bizarre frumpy hair.

    • Candigirl1968

Give this to Rooney and call it a day.

    • maggiemaybe

Declarative and definitive… and yet also kind of depressing. For me anyway.

    • http://www.sineaddoyle.com Sinead

I in the minority but love this. Hair could do with more effort but otherwise it’s fab. Also I want to go to a Game of Thrones themed nightclub where hot, Hervé Léger clad, nerds can gather and use chat up lines that lead to conversations between the differences between the books and the show.

Remember General Zod from the Superman movies? This looks like his half sister ‘Zodda’…out

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      SHE, is Fabulous!  Always!

    • akprincess72

      I just don’t like her…
