Kristin Davis in Vintage Dior

Posted on December 19, 2012

Oh, we feel awful, kittens. What have we done to poor Kristin? See, we’ve been ragging on her for years because she dresses too … we won’t say “young,” but … well, okay. Maybe we did say she dresses too young once or twice, but what we meant was that she dresses like she did 5, 10, 15 years ago. Sarah Jessica Parker occasionally lapses into Carrie Bradshaw-style dressing, but not nearly as much as Kristin does with her persistent mid-’90s Charlotte York style rearing its head years past its expiration date.

But Kristin, honey, this was not the way to go.

Kristin Davis attends the 2012 Dubai International Film Festival, Dubai Cares and Oxfam “One Night to Change Lives” Charity Gala in vintage Christian Dior.

Sure, it’s Dubai and we suppose you have to expect a more conservative style on the red carpet, but this is pure politician’s wife. Elderly politician’s wife. This would look frumpy on Helen Mirren and she’s two decades older than Kristin. Everything is making us sad, from the twee little shoes to the too-heavy necklace to the doll-like makeup to that stiff and wrinkled bodice. We would have told her to keep the jacket, scrap everything else, and start over.

Miss Kristin, when we said to find a new style that suits you now, we meant NOW, not 30 years from now, hon. There are a couple stops along the way as you travel from “ingenue” to “grande dame.”

  • It doesn’t help that she’s surrounded by 20 year olds in micro-dresses

    • I was going to say, obviously the “you’re in Dubai, dress conservatively” memo was not received by the blondes in back of her.  The fit on her dress is horrendous.  Question: if something is “vintage” does that mean it cannot be tailored or altered in any way?  or is it simply a copy of an older design which is available for celebs and other luminaries to borrow?

      • Jennifer W

You mean the blonde cocktail waitresses in the background? I think they’re automatically exempt from tasteful clothing.

Of course, that doesn’t exempt Kristin from this awfulness either.

      • kitu4

They almost look like servers though. The one coming in on the side is holding a tray as is one of the ones in the back.

  • luciaphile

The fit in the bust is terrible.

    • kimmeister

That exaggerated sweetheart neckline doesn’t really work on anybody.

      • luciaphile

And to top it off, what’s going on in the bodice is even worse.

  • FrayedMachine

I do like the really funky cardigan and feel like I would love this more if there were several inches cut off.

    • 3boysful

And we might actually see and appreciate the “really funky cardigan” had she paired it with something white that would’ve let all that cutwork (or whatever it is) shine.

  • Dot

She desperately needs a new hairstyle.

    •  Is the top of her hair pinned back? I can’t quite see, but it doesn’t have the body it usually does. And it definitely needs a bit of a change.

      • Dot

Yes, I think it’s partially pinned back. I’d like to see what the back looks like.

    • DTLAFamilies

As a woman in her 40s I’m struggling to figure out the hair thing. It doesn’t help that I have very thick, curly hair. Long is too young and sloppy, short doesn’t seem to quite suit me. It’s hard to get it right!

  • I live in Dubai, she is dressed like most Arab women in private formal occasions, and it is NOT a good thing.

    • formerlyAnon

Though depending on the personal aspect of her presence – meaning who she was visiting/meeting/hoping to meet/etc., that may have been exactly the way she wanted to look.

  • EverybodysStarling

That is so freaking unflattering. Horrible.

  • filmcricket

This could be salvaged, if the fit and styling were better. But yeah, bad make-up, bad shoes, bad manicure, terrible fit.

  • Little_Olive

So sad, it’s like a style funeral. The nonexistent hairstyle is the non-cherry on the top.

  • I actually like the necklace…but it belongs with another look, for sure.

  • Wow. What really keeps this from working at all is the fit, which is way, way off.  Its especially bad at the hip line, where it seems to be bunching. Also, the waistline is a tad bit too high on her, and throws all her body shape off.  Great little jacket. But it fights oddly with that dress, even though its black.

  • nannypoo

At first I thought of Helen Mirren, but on closer examination I think it’s better suited to Helena Bonham Carter. Definitely not a good choice for Kristin Davis.

  • Mismarker

Oh, Charlotte. What is this shit? Wonky fit.  BOW shoes.  Bright white manicure.  Hair and makeup were seemingly an afterthought. Does she have no people? Does she have no mirror?

  • Introspective

The dress is not only aging but its also ill fitted. The whole look just feels drab. Like shes’s going to a formal funeral.

  • B_C_J

The fit is a total disaster. The dress is puckering  above and below the waist in a most unflattering way.  The hairstyle is also a bit plain.

  • notterriblybitter

All I can see is that white nail polish.

  • Judy_J

I do love the jacket, but that’s all.

  • StellaZafella

This dress looks bored with life.

  • I love that jacket! In my mind, the story goes like this: “Wow, what a great jacket! I really, really want to wear this, but I don’t have anything to wear it with. How about I just throw it over this old dress? The jacket is so fabulous, surely nobody will even notice how frumpy the rest of the outfit is… I can totally get away with this!”

    • sweetestsith

haha, pretty much what I thought when I saw the pictures! The jacket is pretty and interesting (I kind of want it actually), but needs something more tailored underneath. The shoes/hair/makeup are just sad. She’s a pretty lady, but never seems to know how to dress herself. Or have any friends with mirrors…

  • Zippypie

Oh god, honey.  This is horrible.  The fit is just atrocious – the bodice, the HIPS pulling and bunching…..*shudder*  You poor, poor thing.  TLo, can you offer this woman a free gay uncle consult or something?  She’s in pain!

  • alyce1213

She looks like a matronly guest cellist.

  • kimmeister

The jacket is interesting but looks like it’s made out of black licorice ropes.

  • DTLAFamilies

She’s so pretty and has a fantastic figure, so what is the problem?? Presumably she can afford a good stylist?

  • Cathy S

It’s pulling in a weird way around her pelvis. What’s up with that?

  • Black is her color, though.

  • UglyTalents

She’s such an adorable and pretty lady, too. But those be-bowed shoes! Gack.

  • mmc2315

My 16 yo daughter would flip with joy over those shoes!

  • Trisha26

It also looks cheap. Like a mall bridal store “matron of honor” dress.

  • AmeliaEve

I don’t like the little jacket at all. That sleeve length screams Mother of the Bride.

  • kitu4

    Plain white nail polish? WHY?

  • MilaXX

that is awful full stop. the dress is mother of the bride, but the hair is junior prom and the necklace is just wth?

  • xmixiex

The Dubai factor was my first thought too, but yeah, girls in the background… maybe this was just what was suggested for her.

  • decormaven

This look is ripped straight from the pages of the Evergreen Country Club black tie affair, 1987. Looks like something from Nancy Reagan’s closet when Ronnie was in office.

  • Sara__B

I’m dating myself, but my first thought was “Tricia Nixon”,  except Tricia was a sugary-sweet blonde teenager in the 60s when this hair and silhouette were in style.

  • R. L.

That is Helen Mirren’s dress plus it fits like Kristen borrowed it from her.  I get tired of the same hair decade after decade with so many female stars.  Take a page out of Meg Ryan’s book girlfriend.  Fab hair with appropriate changes for decades and styles.

  • AnnPopovic

The way she stands makes me think of invisible dog whistles, and I don’t think the jacket does her any favors, either. She’d be better off saving the shoes; at least she could tear the bows off n’ still wear ’em?

  • Oh, how sad the shoes make me. Everything else is just ugly. But here’s one thing: when she smiles at the camera without doing the Shirley Temple head tilt, she looks a thousand times more elegant.

  • Laura M Evans

I live in Dubai as well…you can be conservative and respect the culture (though I’d argue that Dubai is one of the more Western minded cities in the Middle East, and the least-conservative city in the whole UAE) without ignoring fit issues.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Dowdy, frumpy, ewww! Kristin, no.

  • It looks like she has four feet.

  • Candigirl1968

This is not her dress at all.  It’s a funereal mother of the bride look.
I wonder if Kristen might want to explore Oscar De La Renta (shouldn’t be a problem, since it’s clear the woman still is getting high end gowns thrown at her).  It’s classic, which seems to be her comfort zone, and it’s grown up without being grandmotherly.

  • Erin Herndobler

As someone who lives in Abu Dhabi (two hours from Dubai) I have to say that the “dress conservative” rule is not strictly observed in the UAE. At least not on weekends, nighttime or special occasions like this. There are many people who walk around with shorter sleeveless dresses and it is perfectly normal and social acceptable to do so, especially in Dubai where the city is more cosmopolitan.

  • Rebecca Jay

Did she paint her nails with White-Out?

  • Dagney

    Her stylist hates her.
