Kerry Washington Double Shot

Posted on December 06, 2012

Miss Kerry has got it going on with both these looks, proving she’s got what it takes to be considered a true fashionista: the ability to work totally different looks and make it seem like she was born to wear them.

First up: The High Fashion Bitch Look:

Kerry Washington attends The Hollywood Reporter’s “Power 100: Women In Entertainment” Breakfast in a Carven dress paired with Kate Spade clutch.

Carven Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Marine van Outryve (NATHALIE)

Kate Spade Pardon My French Typewriter Keys Clutch

Love the little sleeves, love the swooping seamlines, love the smokey color, love the bodice detail. It looks gorgeous on her. We don’t even mind the matchy accessories, since they’re both the exact shade of red this look needs.

Next: The Sex On a Stick Look:

Kerry Washington attends Los Angeles Confidential Celebrates 10th Anniversary in a Gucci dress.

Gucci Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Maud Welzen

Not to say that this is sexy in an in-your-face kinda way; just that it’s straight-up sexy, no frills. She looks ready to hit a South Beach nightclub and get men to fight over her. Those shoes are KILLA – and they really make the look. Could’ve used some jewelry, though.

I hesitate to disagree with you, when you so nice to me in my TLo dream, but I’m not sure I love either dress.  I will say, however, that her natural beauty contributes mightily to the “werq-ness” of each look.

    • mshesterp

I think both of them do unusual things to her figure, so I don’t lovelovelove either of them.  They’re interesting, but kinda odd to me.

      • judybrowni

Yes, the first dress screams “Hot mess!” with all that conflicting detail, and gives the wee slip of a gal enormous hips.

The second makes her figure look schlumpy.

  • MrsMaxPower

I dig both looks, but I want her to eat a sandwich…she’s getting too tiny.

  • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

She is so skinny! I am worried!

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

She is just a slip of a thing isn’t she? I like both looks but I think she’s too wee for the Carven dress.

    • marigi

Unfortunately, Carven dresses seem to fit only on very small people. I always have to try at least a size up and then it looks frumpy most of the time…

  • emmessell

Can we put the kibosh on the skinny comments please?  No body-shaming here. Thanks.

    • Introspective

She’s publicly admitted to a past eating disorder so the worry above may very well be coming from a good place rather than a body snark sort of place.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Regardless of supposed good intentions or not, such comments are not allowed here.

      • emmessell

I hear you. It just grates – we skinny girls have been told to “eat a sandwich” all our lives and it usually doesn’t come from a place of genuine concern.  If it’s not ok to comment that a heavy girl should *not* eat a sandwich, then the inverse should be true.

        • Introspective

          points taken.

        • Beardslee

I thought the same thing – that she is wee slip of thing – simply and ONLY because she is a small person, as is  evident in the second photo.  NOT a comment about her weight. She is small, that’s all.    And lovely. No snark, no judgement, just something I noticed about her, the way we all notice things about people.

          • emmessell

There were previous comments (since deleted) that were much more pointed about her weight.  Not of the “slip of a thing” variety.

          • Beardslee

aha.  That makes more sense.  I was puzzled.

          • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Oh good – because I thought you were snarking at my post. And my point really was that the first dress swamps her a bit.

          • emmessell

Yes, sorry that got confusing.  I actually agree with you about the dress!

    • gabbilevy

When does it stop being body shaming and start being, hey, I can see her shoulder bones and that concerns me?

  • Nariya

The first look is killer.  I don’t know about the second. The big arm-holes and triangle shape together make it look like her boobs are lower than they should be.  Still, her hair, shoes, shoulders all have the come-hither look.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

The prominent arm pit cut out in the first dress is quite nasty

    • Kristi Mitchell

I was thinking the same thing.  Check out the model – when the arm is down – the cutout gives a very distinct arm cleavage impression.  Not pretty at all.

    • kimmeister

It is also unfortunately framing her visible deodorant.

  • MilaXX

LOVE Both looks. Her show Scandal gives me LIFE every Thursday night & she got a bunch of really good looking movies coming out. I’m thinking it’s good to be Ms. Washington right about now.

    • tereliz

Scandal is definitely one of my not-guilty pleasures–I feel smarter by watching that show, lol. And I normally shy from any sort of political drama.

I think she looks great in both dresses, too.

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

She has such a beautiful face, totally doll-like. That first look is smashing, I love a good grey and black and I must have that clutch, stat. As for the second look, yes, those shoes are kill-a-bitchb hurt me sandals, indeed.

  • Introspective

she looks fab in the first look. the dress makes you look twice and think about what its got going on–reminds me of the kinda stuff cate blanchett wears in that way. although the skirt seems overwhelming.

the second look has that wonky angle that many RC shots have which makes everyone look like bobble heads about to topple over, so I automatically love it less. dress seems big to me especially in the underarm area. but you are right uncles TLo that the shoe- from what I can see of it at this annoying ass camera angle that minimizes feet while blowing up heads- is hot.

    • insertcleverbit

I think a lot of actors are also bobblehead-y – it makes them look better on camera.

  • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

I really don’t like either of these dresses at all. The first collapses in a very awkward way into the crotchal area in all photos. The second, the python/crocodile hybrid thingy, is too literal. Are those actually raised scales running down the middle? Isn’t the reptile thing over for a while? (She is, however a beautiful and stylish woman and I am writing this while wearing sweaty workout clothes and a nylon Champion hoody, so there’s that.)

    • Introspective

nobody has to dress up to attend bkcc. that’s the beauty of this place! we only have to gawk at and critique starlets, while under no pressure ourselves to look like one.

    • kimmeister

Yes, that first dress is very “all roads lead to crotch.”

  • Pants_are_a_must

Can I state that, regardless of the dresses, her face is really, truly KILLA and upstages both looks by leaps and bounds? Oh my god she’s beautiful.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I really love the second dress.  It is sexy without being slutty.  I think the first dress, however, makes her look matronly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vienna-Marriott/100001636120960 Vienna Marriott

She looks like a darker Taylor Swift in the first look.  That being said, I love the look.

  • alyce1213

The first dress looks like an old leaded glass window, but not in a good way — t’s a bit heavy, obvious and gimmicky.  The poof cap sleeves look weird attached to that bodice; it might have been a little better sleeveless.
The second dress is okay, but nothing special.
I don’t think either look is particularly a fashionista statement on her part.

  • marilyn

The skirt in the first dress is too long.  If it had been closer to the knee, it would have been a great dress.  That long hem drags it into dowdy-land.

  • EttaKit

The shoes for the second outfit remind me of house arrest bracelets.  I think Lindsey Lohan is the only one who should rock that look.

    • kimmeister

I always hate shoes with a big ankle cuff.  They flatter nobody.

  • kschwarting

She really looks great in both, although I agree the second look could stand a little jewelry.  I may be alone in this, but I love the lines of the Carven dress and I think she’s pulling it off.  She does love her Kate Spade clutches, doesn’t she?

  • MarissaLG

I personally much prefer the first look. It’s youthful but classy and demure at the same time. LOVE!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That Gucci dress is ugly.  It looks like a python ate Grandma while she was quilting a baby blanket.

  • filmcricket

I don’t like either look at all, frankly, although #2 is decent. J’adore that Kate Spade clutch, though! Ms. Washington, however, continues to be stunning.

  • http://www.katidom.com/ Kati B

I think the first dress looks like something Maria Von Trapp would wear if she were gothic. Do not like.

She looks hot in the second dress, but agree, she could use some jewelry.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t love either of these looks on her much although I do like the second one some, particularly her hair which looks pretty and balances the edginess of the dress nicely. The first one is pure edgy twee and it doesn’t work at all for me

  • e jerry powell

She’s getting better at doing the red carpet for photos thing, but she still stands a bit pigeon-toed, and there’s still just a teensy bit of a slouch in the upper body that kind of gives off the “oh, alright, I’ll stand still for the camera” air.  I wonder what growing up with her mother was like when I see this kind of body language from such a pretty and intelligent woman.

  • Lilithcat

Is she pregnant?  Or is it just the way she’s standing?

  • Judy_S

I don’t like the way the skirt of the Carven dress falls, but she looks wonderful in both dresses.

  • thecitysleeps

I adore the first look so much.  Beautiful dress and I love the pointy red shoes with it.  I don’t love the second dress personally but I have eyes and she looks killer in it.  Love the shoes.

  • Trisha26

I don’t like the way grey dress drapes in the front. And I hate the second look completely. Those shoes are horrible – they look like shackles.

  • kimmeister

My favorite thing about both of these two looks is the red clutch (and its punny name).

  • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

The shoes look like those ankle things they used to make people on house arrest wear.

  • SewingSiren

Both looks are fabulous on her. They are so different and she manages both of them better than the models. Double werq as far as I’m concerned.

  • Annabelle Archer

I know we should only discuss the fashion, but her frame is ruining the fashion for me.  She’s getting way too skinny.  Do you remember the gorgeousness that was her character in I Think I Love My Wife?  Terrible movie, but she was so unbelievably gorgeous in it that. I am just worried about her now.  She has dead eyes too.  Like she has stopped having any kind of fun in life.

  • formerlyAnon

    Man, she’s lovely.

The first dress comes thisclose to overwhelming her just a bit. The second should be the textbook portrait stylists pull out to illustrate between “touch of class” and “totally pedestrian” when rail thin women want to wear bath towel dresses to show off their tiny-ness.

  • joything

The cumulative WERQ-ness of the first look overrules my dislike of the sleevy-things. Respect to Mz. Washington!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPWSQ2BDU5XJIA23AMYVBRWZBA Eric

Neither of them are bad, but the placement of the applique on the first one makes her (and the model) look just a little thick in the waist.  On the second one I think it makes her look a little stumpy- maybe a little something to define the waist?

It could be just how they photograph.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

Not a fan of the first dress : it looks way too much like the entryway window of a posh London flat, and I hate the sleeves. The length and fullness also swallow her a bit. The second look is wowakazam!

  • MissMariRose

Is anyone else here watching Scandal? I watched the previous episodes “on demand” last weekend and I’m thoroughly hooked. Except I don’t understand what her character sees in the president. That guy is a raging douchenozzle.

  • Jen Craigslist

I think the bodice detail is supposed to look like illusion netting (it does on the model). She should have swapped out the light color for something that matches her lovely skin tone. It’s distracting as is.

  • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

She is an actress who I rooted for a while but haven’t seen her yet rise to the occasion. Any piece of work I missed?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=508965562 Amanda Choo Quan

Those shoes make her look like she’s under house arrest. Twice.

  • nicole seligman

has this woman ever had a bad hair day? also, i think she’s replacing zoe saldana as my RC style muse.

  • ellabob

The first look makes her look pregnant (perhaps she could loan it to Kate?)… I can’t get past that.  Love the second look

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=590896065 Claire Maeve

I’m not to crazy about the second shoes. I can’t unsee those alcohol monitoring ankle bracelets.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angelica-Smith-Mertens/150401222 Angelica Smith Mertens

The second shoes look like they have ankle monitors attached to them….seriously…

  • lifetime_student

I adore Kerry which is why I urge TLo to find a copy of the most recent issue of Women’s Health magazine to see the travesty of photoshopping committed against this gorgeous woman.

Oh yes, I agree with every word of your assessments of both looks.

  • julnyes

Her face is lovely in both images, but we are getting waaaayyy too much armpit exposed in both outfits.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Meh. I think Kerry is one of the most gorgeous people in Hollywood, but I’m not in love with either dress.

  • pulpytomato

Ooh, she’s pulling it together. Finally. She looks fantastic. I particularly like the first look. Unique dress and it works for her.

  • librarygrrl64

That first dress is beautiful! I love all of the Art Nouveau lines, and the color is stunning. I agree: red was the way to go with the accessories.

  • sk8tfan

Just hand over the clutch to me now and nobody gets hurt.

  • decormaven

Somebody’s stylist knows how to make the client look GOOD! Two different looks, and she’s pulling it off in both. Personally not a fan of the notched arm detail in dress #1, and happy to see the black detailing on the neckline of dress #2 has been removed. Lurve that red clutch!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

Omg, I lurve that clutch.  I’m going to have to put that on my wish list!

  • JimMcC

Ever have one of those moments where you’re all, “Oh! I have a witty observation. To the comments!” And then you’re all, “Oh… Everyone already noticed those shoes look like she’s under house arrest.”

    Womp womp.

Meanwhile, that first look is one of the best I’ve seen in recent memory, but I do kind of hate every last thing about the second.

  • guest2visits

I absolutely love the first dress, and she looks amazing. The second is pretty, though the top doesn’t fit as well as it could.

  • EEKstl

Gawd, I love that Gucci dress.  She should have added the flower necklace, tho.  But good job, KW!

  • bellafigura1

Love dress #1, and I’m good with #2.  More importantly, TLo, I think you need to add Scandal to  your line-up!  Kerry is fantastic.

  • ShayShay

Dress #1 is fantastic, but her hair is a tragedy.  It looks like an ill fitting wig.  Please keep the weave tight Kerry!  Dress #2 works, but it needs a statement choker like the one the model is rocking.

  • veronkimo

Oh, no! The shapes of both of these dresses make her look like she has a triangular shape. Small at the top and wide at the bottom. Not the most appealing look. Also, can you really be considered a fashionista if you copy the runway look exactly by wearing the dress and the shoes? I don’t think so.
