Keira Knightley in Duro Olowu on Jimmy Fallon

Posted on December 04, 2012

This is one super-cray-cray dress, but we think we kinda dig it.

Keira Knightley makes an appearance on the ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in New York City.

Duro Olowu Spring 2013 Collection

Bottega Veneta Spring 2013 Platform Pump

It’s got a swingy, light soignee feel to it, which is perfect for Miss Keira. In fact, we can’t think of one other ladystar who could pull this off. It’s great for a TV sit-down, because it’s so visually interesting and she looks so obviously comfortable in it. No panty-flashing fear on her face. We think it looks better with a sash or belt, though.

And we’ve gone on record many a time to register our dislike of the platform pump, but we have to admit, that pair is fabulous.

    this is so alexa chung.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Yes. And I LOATHE Alexa Chung, for some reason.

      • Sadie-Ann

I am so with you, although my irrational hate for her has gone down a little since fashion-y people stopped making her the human version of the word fetch.

Stop trying to make it happen!

    • gabbilevy

Zoe Saldana could also pull this off, but then again, what can’t she wear?

  • Clueless_Jock

She’s one step away from Helena Bonham Carter.

    • Rand Ortega

Is that a bad thing? I love HBC for her kooky, individualist style.

      • lovelyivy

Yeah but she does not share HBC’s… for lack of a better term- exuberance. It works for HBC because it’s just SO her. Keira? Not so much.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

    The SHOES.

    • Kristin McNamara

Is that a terrible caps lock, or an awesome one? In my head, it was an “OH MY LORD, THOSE SHOES. EWWWWWWWWW!!!”

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

I’m with you on this one.  I hate those shoes and I am not entirely averse to platforms.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks fun, happy, and comfortable. Can’t lose. Those bright colors near her face are doing amazing things for her eyes as well. How can she wear this without looking desperately whimsical? It’s a gift.

Pretty sure I wore the Target version of those shoes to a Sea Scout dance in 2000. God I looked cute.

    • Paigealicious

EXACTLY. Those shoes scream 2000 to me.

      • filmcricket

They scream 1994 to me. My roommate had some just like ‘em.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

They scream 1973  and “BOWIE” to me.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

My sister had that pair in the early 70′s.

        • Introspective

agree! its so the mid-90s references to early 70s style to me. in fact, when I saw them I started singing “groooove is in the heaaaaaaaaa-ah-ah-ah-art!!!”

keira is giving me lady miss kier realness with that shoe…

        • cooperalden

Yes, ALDO 1994.  Bad club.  Bad music.  Bad hangover.  Thanks for taking me back in time.

      • watchmeboogie

I miss those shoes and want them to come back. Thanks for helping things along, Keira!

The dress is hiddy to me but she makes it work somehow.

  • minnye

    Love it all.

  • S_Swift

It must be the lighting (?) but the colors look so much better in the dress the model is wearing. It looks so drab under the Fallon studio lights. I also like how the sash breaks up the crazy prints.

  • kirkyo

Really pretty dress. I like the vibrancy of the colors on the model, but maybe that’s photoshopped.

  • enchanted216

Love the dress.  Love the shoes.  Very 90′s…….

  • MissMariRose

Josephine and the Amazing Technicolor Housecoat.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m just not getting the love for this dress. It does look like an attempt to transform a housecoat into something more, and it’s not working.

  • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

Fun but I like the color of the dress on the model photo better.

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

I adore this – Color! Life! Those 70s platforms….It has a very 70s/90s cross pollination feel. Velvet Goldmine goes grunge.

    • MissAmynae

      Excellent reference!

Completely agree- hooray color!!!  Would wear this in a heart-beat!

    • formerlyAnon

”70s/90s cross pollination feel. Velvet Goldmine goes grunge”

      nailed it!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I really love it.  I feel like it suits her better than the lace Valentino gowns, to be honest.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

Is she trying to look like Olive Oyl??

  • mjude

i actually like it all.  is that a buckle on top of the shoes?

    • kimmeister

I’ve been trying to figure out what is on top of the shoes too!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I was seeing some better-days Winona Ryder

  • thecitysleeps

I love the dress to bits, but those shoes do not look good in my eyes.  The heel is weird.

  • MrsMaxPower

I actually love this look from head to toe.  However, I may be biased…ever since she was Elizabeth Bennet I’ve loved  her.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She’s such a tiny thing, this actually looks really fresh and cute on her. The more I look at those shoes, the more I like them.

  • RocknRollmom

I saw this last night and knew it would be here.  It looks better in the still pics on my monitor than it did on my camera.  I remain unresolved in my final opinion on this one.  I did not like it last night. But I like it better this morning.  What I really like is the purse the model is carrying!  The shoes are perfect for the dress though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

It looks like a handful of MC Escher paintings put together in dress form.

  • MilaXX

It’s a bit of  Frankendress, but she looked great wearing this. I think I have found the one frankendress I would own and wear.

    • MissAmynae

^^ yes! and you really could wear it all year!

**off to see more of this designer’s work!

      • Sara__B

I’m highly unlikely to see anything by this designer on the streets of my town, county, or even state,  so I hope to see more of his Spring 2013 collection on celebrities. He uses color and print in a (mostly) charming and playful way.

        • MissAmynae

Yeah, not a lot of this look in Texas…except maybe during some of the festivals here in Austin.  Hopefully our dear T & Lo will hear us and feature Mr. Olowu’s stuff when it shows up :-)

I think Mrs. Obama has worn some of his stuff, but don’t bet the farm on it. Charming and playful- excellent descriptors!

  • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

Love the dress, hate the shoes.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

      Ditto!

  • StellaZafella

I love how she looks here…smile and all!

The dress, on her, is Boho to the max and really a bit kicky. It makes me think of an updated take on the “Skirt of men’s ties” that the hippy chicks made in the Haight in the 60′s.

  • Cathy S

Like the dress, don’t like the shoes. I can see in the close up of the shoes that they’re pretty, but on her feet they look too clunky.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

This is lots of fun, and looks good on her too! Love it.

  • Sara__B

I’ve never seen a photo of her SMILING before. Charming! (She looks great in that odd dress, too.)

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Someone should show her a picture of herself smiling and maybe she’ll realize it looks better than the duckface.

      • LLuL

Yes! I was thinking there was something different and more attractive about her here, and I just KNEW it could not be that dress. Now I’m thinking she can probably pull off any outfit in the absence of duckface.

  • Scott Isaacs

Adorable! Love the dress. And she looks so fun! I totally want to have drinks with her and Kelly Osbourne now. Then my life would be complete.

Is it bad that I prefer her with blonde hair? Love Actually made me fall in love with her, and the blonde hair just suited her to a T.

    • Billie_Dawn

I feel like she would be an absolute blast to hang out with. Especially if there’s booze involved!

  • sockandaphone

she looks pretty happy in it. idk. I think i woulda like without that random fabric at the bottom/back area.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I would straight-up love this if the rear of the dress didn’t have that particular print. I like it, but the skirt’s backside makes my eyes twitch.

  • clevRcat

Hooray! I saw this elsewhere on the ‘net and was so hoping you’d feature it.  While I don’t love that strip of candy buttons down the front, I really love the rest.  I’m tired of watching starlets pull down their bandage dresses to cover their thighs and ladybits on talk shows.  This is fun and breezy.

  • ojosazules

Love all of it. A belt would have detracted from the flowiness and easiness of the dress.

  • poggi

I think it looks better particularly when standing, with the
sash.  But I don’t think the absence of the sash matters when sitting.  She looks pretty and comfortable and fun.  I like the shoe too, but probably with no other dress and on no one else.  Those shoes would trunkify anyone else’s legs.

  • girliecue

HBC could totally wear this entire outfit too, but I like to imagine she’d add a petticoat and/or a jaunty little hat. Hurrah for sartorially eccentric English ladystars!

  • ankali

I don’t like the asymmetry in the hem, and I agree that this is a difficult dress to pull off. That said, it totally suits her, she’s managing it with ease, and it looks great sitting down. And the shoes are such a great choice — a little bit dotty, which frames the quirkiness of the dress as more deliberate & fun somehow? I don’t think I’d be as on board if she’d just worn a pump.

  • Judy_J

I’m surprised at how much I like this dress….and the shoes are a perfect match!  Nicely done, Ms Knightley!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I do love these platforms — never thought I’d say that. I also kind of dig the dress, though I’m not crazy about the asymmetrical hemline. I prefer the way it’s styled on the model; where did the belt go?

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love her to the point where she can do no wrong, but this? I can’t get behind any of it.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

The dress is so flouncy and whimsical. But the shoes are so heavy…

  • lehen

i love this whole look.  i covet that dress.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I think I’d like it better without the button detail up the front (just a plain v-neck), but the shape of it… oh, for everyone to wear something that shape for a sit-down!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

There is a lot to like about this dress and Keira is rocking it.  Its great to see a lady star in a dress this length for a sit down, she looks so comfortable and fresh.

  • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

    head to toe j’adore!

  • teensmom99

bottega veneta on the shoes, of course.  They are fabulous.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Girl looks so much prettier with a smile instead of duck face.  I don’t like the button down detail, but otherwise, it’s okay.

  • m0r0

The shoes are a Wedge/Not Wedge. And I love the outfit because it’s totally something I would have worn ten years ago.

  • dsco3031

The shoes make me stabby. How is it that her hair and makeup are always perfect? I LOVE the way she looks here.

  • maggiemaybe

Those shoes make me so very, very happy.

  • gsk241

It would be fine if it didn’t look like she’s wearing a measuring tape around her neck.  Also, I can’t stand her, so there’s that.

  • formerlyAnon

    Killing it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Love the dress on her. Hate the shoes. HAAAAATE the shoes.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I hate the platforms too but I LOVE these. I love this whole look. And apparently Keira does too and it shows. I really want that dress.

  • lalahartma

It’s, surprisingly, a win for me, too, including the shoes!

  • kimmeister

LOVE the lively, un-modelly facial expressions.  HATE the mixing of prints – Mondo does it way better.

  • Qitkat

Intriguing dress, but I don’t care for the placket. It pulls down the sophistication level (reminds me of a henley).

    • Kate4queen

I agree, the placket looks like a name tag, but the rest of the dress is definitely interesting. :)

  • Trisha26

She’s doing her best Tay Swift face here.

  • Sing4yursupper

I love the dress – and hate the shoes. Maybe it’s those shoes with the dress. That dress is so much fun.

  • kategs

I seriously want that dress.  The bag the model is carrying?  Not so much.

  • decormaven

This is the most animated I’ve ever seen her. Those shoes are awesome and a great pick for the unusual dress. Good call, stylist!

  • Imasewsure

Don’t love the side panels but I do love the dress overall, particularly with those awesome shoes… clunky shoes done right and paired in the right way on the right woman… you go girl!

  • BrooklynBomber

Kind of a breath of fresh air, that dress.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

    She makes it work.

  • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

She looks ace in those 30′s floaty styles – and this dress is like a modern version of the chiffon 30′s tea dress – she’s willowy enough to carry it off. Awesome

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like it – these 30s/40s tea dresses are a good shape for her, and the clashing patterns make it interesting.

  • KayEmWhy

The Frankenshoes are too heavy for this dress.

  • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

hate the dress, but how I yearn for the model’s bag.

  • notdorothygale

Love it. Fun, quirky and different. I wish I were young (and rich) enough to wear it.

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

Kind of love it, even the shoes. As if she needs to be any taller!

  • kikisayshi

WTF with those shoes?  And her hair looks like shit.

  • Anathema_Device

I do like this very much. I think she looks great. Of all the pattern and panels and such on that dress, it is the multicolored buttons and white placket that are a bridge too far for me. Tone that down and all is right with this dress. I wouldn’t ordinarily like those shoes, but she is working them and they look great with the dress.

  • frannyprof

    I. Want. Those. Shoes.

  • guest2visits

A really cute dress on Miss Knightley; but I like the even more brilliant blue on the model’s version. The crazy shoes help make it.
This would NOT however; work for many.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1327611993 Carol Stark

Those shoes look like a pair of anchors to keep her from floating away….  But they are beautifully tooled.

  • Allison Woods

    Cute. Hate the shoes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1452430239 Roxanne Pedro

you have got to be kidding about those horrendous shoes!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1129137319 Paula Pertile

    Those shoes are to die.

  • SewingSiren

Love it head to toe. And I love Duro Olowu too.

  • judybrowni

    So ’70s chic.

  • siriuslover

What? She can smile? She has teeth? She should smile like this more often as it is really becoming…far more so than that slightly open lip she sports on the red carpet.
    Oh yeah, awesome dress, too!

  • Zippypie

Love it!  And the shoes.  Hate the hair.

  • Stefanie Mackenzie

The reason this is so fab is because the dress is so Ossie Clark, and the shoes are pure Betsy Bunky Nini circa about 1970. I owned them both back in the day.

  • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

She looks so much prettier when she’s not doing that DAMN ducklip.

And the dress? Adorable. The shoes? She’s one small ankle roll from a set of crutches.

  • Judih1

Looks like a hillbilly dress to me – put together with whatever patches of fabric that could scrounge up from old clothes. I have a love/hate relationship with the shoes

  • FancyPhilly

Add some chub and make her much less attractive and I feel like this could be me circa 1997 when I was obsessed with custo Barcelona clothes and platforms. Anyway, I like it for being different and somewhat casual. Love the shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/k_wilson k_wilson

That really is a fab dress, but it feels a little bit daytime for me for a late night talk show.

  • RzYoung

I love this look, it’s so very her. I got a Celia Birtwell book for my birthday so I’m all about prints now!

  • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

She looks like she walked out of a Peter Max painting and I love her for wearing a dress that makes sense for sitting. The shoes are phenomenal.

  • J. Preposterice

I love, love, love, but cannot afford, Duro Olowu. Also those shapes are not for me.  But oh.  Love.

  • TRSTL

TOTALLY IN!  Love this on her…

  • Beardslee

I love the length and drape of the skirt.  So comfortable and graceful, standing up or sitting down.  So nice seeing a woman being able to sit naturally instead of being wedged into something short and tight.  And I think the dress is fantastic.

  • mmc2315

Like!  It’s fun, interesting, and flattering.  Agree about needing the belt or sash.  The shoes?  The chunky heel makes them.  I want to try those on and strut around the store pretending I’m someone I’m not.  ;-)

  • TieDye64

I think she’s pulling this off, and while I normally think platform pumps are of the devil, I kinda dig the shoes. They’re fun.

    • Candigirl1968

They also look like it’s making it easier to sit comfortably in the chair and not feel like a kid who can’t get their feet to hit the ground without practically sitting on the edge of her seat.

  • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

I love this! And totally agree that it is a great sit-down interview dress.

  • quiltrx

Ick, as usual, I can’t stand her.  The only thing I like is the fabric on the skirt and sleeves–very vintage-kimono-ish.

  • librarygrrl64

Wow, do I ever hate those shoes! But the dress is very cool. :-)

  • MissMapp

It reminds me so much of the trippy revisited 1930s-40s looks popular the 1970s. All those crazy prints — very Norma Kamali.
