Katie Holmes in Tom Ford

Posted on December 13, 2012

After featuring so many pics of her lately looking all Serious New York Theater Actress as she walks down the street, our eyes were momentarily pleased to see Miss Katie all dressed up.

Katie Holmes attends ’12-12-12′ a concert benefiting The Robin Hood Relief Fund to aid the victims of Hurricane Sandy at Madison Square Garden in New York City in Tom Ford.

Tom Ford Fall 2012 Collection

Tom Ford Padlock Ankle-Strap Pump

That moment passed rather quickly, though. Tom Ford has really lost the plot lately, hasn’t he? We haven’t seen a decent dress coming from his direction in a while. This is pretty hiddy. We love the color and the luxuriousness of it, but that bodice is outrageously unflattering, bordering on vulgar. How does a lady try something like this on and not immediately see that it complete obliterates her natural shape? “I want a dress that disguises the fact that I have breasts AND a waist!”

And, oh, Miss Katie. The cocker spaniel hair? You’re better than this, girl.

I still consider this an upgrade for the shoes alone.

    • lovelyivy

They’re so fabulous, they are all I can see….

      • Vaniljekjeks

My thoughts exactly.  I really want to get myself a pair of those.  Will settle for knockoff, though.

    • JulieTy

The shoes are fab, but is the padlock an allusion to her ex?

    • j_anson

Same thought here! Those shoes are great.

    • littlemac8

I don’t think that shoe is a good look on her leg with her generous calves.  The color of the dress is lovely but the cut is just bad!!

      • Generous calves? They are shapely. I think the shoes highlight how nice her legs are.

      • You have very stingy notions of “generous.”

    • As soon as I saw the shoes, though, I thought, “Really? Padlocks around your ankles?!” I thought things were getting better for Katie, and yet.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Good points, TLo – even he had to cover up the waist on the model with a huge belt create some definition.

Katie looks cute but sort of obviously hiding behind the hair I think.

  • Little_Olive

Hm. Props for her for being able to work ankle straps -I didn’t think she could.

The dress belongs in a futuristic porno.

    • kimmeister

Meanwhile, I was thinking the ankle straps were doing her no favors, especially in the first photo.

  • Good shoes. I wish this version had the brass stomacher though – it’s the only thing that gives the black one shape around the middle.

  • lehen

the shoes are great though.  thank you for NO PLATFORMS

Great shoes, HIDDY dress.  Seriously, how could she not see that this is just awful on her figure? And if it’s awful on her figure, it’s awful period.

    • LLuL

*snort* As soon as I picture Tom Cruise standing next to her the pose makes sense.

    • NinaBoo

The dress reminds me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costumes. I think Donatello wore purple accents.

      • Kirsten Kirsten

        My first thought too.

  • Deac82

I imagine that Tom Ford lives in this world of design where nobody is allowed to give him honest feedback.  He just twirls into the studio with grand proclamations of “Sexy!” and “Glamour!” and nobody is allowed to tell him any different.

    • H3ff

Seriously. I also thought his film was one giant pretentious cliché.

    •  More like purple, velvet, ninja turtle….pretty color, ugly dress

    • Judih1

I agree. Tom Ford is the new emperor with no clothes designer. Except for the shoes, nothing I have seen him design recently is flattering. Does he hate women?

      Katie looks so uncomfortable

  • julesj

Aside from the awful dress, the girl is in desperate need of a bra. The length is off, too long, makes her calves look large. And what is with her stance? She is missing the mark on that too. I guess she fired her stylist when she fired her husband.

    •  To be fair, she often missed the mark when she was married too. I think the only time she’s looked consistently awesome was when she was hanging out with the Beckhams.

      • I’m sure this a requirement when being with them “to consistently look awesome”. Even on my best days I’m sure i’m still a frump around those darn Beckhams.

      • MilaXX

Yes! As if Vicky was dressing her.

    • Mismarker

re: the stance.  Did Tom get her spine in the divorce? Girl looks like she needs a back brace.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        Seriously, stand up straight!

      • formerlyAnon

I did wonder if perhaps the dress needs S-shaped posture or else the wearer looks like a bolster pillow. You note the model is also posing as if faux spinal deformities were in vogue.

  • Makeup is pretty though.

  • You guys are so right. the only redeeming feature of this dress is the glorious color, which is perfect for her.  Only a woman with a body made of steel bands could wear this. Anyone with the tiniest amount of body fat is going to get slammed by it. Which is why the model, who is 12 , 6’6″, and weighs 100 pounds can manage it.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

…AND she still has to use an exaggerated “S” pose to coax some shape out!

      •  Looking at this dress again, the construction issue seems to be that the velvet should have been cut on the bias, which it was not.  Cutting it one the straight grain means that it doesn’t move in the same way as the chiffon inserts. In fact it actively resists moving.  Plus cutting on the bias would have allowed the velvet to skim around the body smoothly.

        • Carly Warnock

I think it’s the fact the bodice looks a bit like a ninja turtle and the colour, while lovely, is enhancing that effect for me.

          • RebeccaKW

I was thinking He-Man figure, but yea.  Fake abs.

  • baritenor

    Stand up straight.

  • jmorino08

Seems like she hasn’t gotten over her tall-girl-married-to-a-short-dude posture issues. Stand up straight, missy!!

    •  She and Redmayne should hang out. They can lean awkwardly together.

      • kimmeister

Only as long as they lean in opposite directions as a counterbalance.  Otherwise, they will just fall over.

  • Introspective

katie is standing oh so reluctantly, like she knows this shit is a miss. but she’s showing progress.

figuring this look will not get as scathing a review as her usual duds do in suri’s burn book. and for that she can rest easy (for now)

  • yybb

There is serious “Psychology 101” going on with hair, posture, dress. The only redeeming thing are the shoes.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i can’t get on board with any dress that gives a woman an insect thorax…..

    • Libby Larson

My thought was “purple teenage mutant ninja turtle”

  • nannypoo

This is so bad. I don’t even like the color. I usually hate ankle straps but these are nice, and her makeup is pretty.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

It’s a great color on her.  Other than that, I can’t think of anything nice to say.

  • Jessi03

    Oh no.

  • Am I seeing that the velvet doesn’t go around the back of this dress? That is the sign of a cheap dress, which we know this is absolutely not. I am with the rest of the bitter kittens, I like the shoes, burn the dress.

    • Elleachaudaucul

More to the point, I think the back of the dress is actually meant to be sheer, ugh. There’s a photo in Bazaar of Michelle Dockery in the long black version that indicates as much. I hope Katie has had it lined.

  • Anathema_Device

If she’d stand the hell up and get her hair back, I’d be able to evaluate the dress.

  • Judy_J

Another one who seems to do better dressing casually than all gussied up for the red carpet.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Royal Blue velvet dresses usually make me tingly all over. Wish this one did. I want those shoes and I don’t care what my orthopedist says!

  • It looks like a Star Trek costume.  For Elmo.

  • Janet B

    Nice color, hideous dress.

  • That dress is a hot mess, but the shoes are fabulous.

  • MilaXX

Great color, ugly dress. Makeup looks fantastic, I wonder if it’s  Bobbi Brown. Hair would be good behind her shoulders.

  • Kristy Evans

She looks like a ninja turtle. COWABUNGA!

    Cute shoes, though.

  • afabulous50

The shoes are killer.  But the bodice looks like giant blue fingers wrapping themselves around her..

  • MrsMaxPower

The dress looks like it’s straight off the Married With Children wardrobe rack.  It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful color for her, but just.so.fug.

  • mhleta

I agree with everything but the “luxuriousness” assessment. Shiny velvet = Walmart/Polyester for me. I can’t get past it. I think one also has to be very careful with the ankle straps, too. They can make the calves look kind of clubby. She’s a runner, so I doubt her calves are actually that shapeless. This look is much more successful on the model. It needs the length and the belt and something other than cocker spaniel hair. BTW, I love that you include the model photo. It’s really interesting to see what the designer intended vs the customer’s interpretation, or lack thereof.

  • Serving Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtle realness with that bodice.

    • ralish

Yes! Exactly what I was thinking!

  • SapphoPoet

I love the color and the fabric, but not the design. Also, I’m tired of the Kate Middleton Hair Style. The shoes, however, are killer.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

This should be called the Turtle Shell dress.  Because that is what it looks like.  I love the shoes, tho.  And maybe her hair is like that because of a flare-up with the Bell’s Palsy?  It seems like a conscious effort to hide part of her face.

  • BrooklynBomber

Tom Ford has really lost the plot lately

    I love it!
As for the dress, which I do not love, I can’t help but wonder if it looks better in person. I mean, it can’t look as bad as it does in pictures, can it??

  • Jecca2244

I wonder if this is why he is still so insistent on not letting photos of the collection out until it is being used in an editorial spread… it just isn’t that great.

  • Agree about the hair but disagree about the dress. I love it. Maybe I am blinded by the fabric and the color but I love it. And the shores are fab too.

  • This dress looks better in black an floor length works much better than  the length on Katie. I think velvet’s ideal purpose is for furniture not clothes . Tom Cruise seems to have sucked the life out of Katie hope she can pull it together.

  • Also, is her shoulder dislocated? I get the the model posed that way, but WTF??

  • SewingSiren

She looks like she’s embarrassed for the dress.

  • As a child, a friend of mine had a couch in his basement made seemingly of the same kind of fabric as this dress.  It smelled of cat pee and neglect, and that’s all that comes to mind when I see this.

  • elleg929

The color is gorgeous and she looks happy/alive; however, the bodice is hideous and completely unflattering.

  • Annabelle Archer

She is so so pretty.  And cocker spaniel hair or not, I covet those long shiny locks.  Blue velvet is surely quite striking on her, but that particular dress is just hurting my feelings.
Love those shoes.  A cankles girl, like myself, could never get away with such.

  • StellaZafella

Yeah, I really needed to see Katie H sporting designer version 6 pack abs on the red carpet.
And stop the slouching – you look like you’re living an apology.

  • ellabob

Tom Ford is great for men – not so good for women’s fashion… hideous dress

  • crash1212

Love the color. Actually like her version of cocker spaniel hair – mostly because it covers much of the complete ugliness of the bodice of this thing – and – adore the shoes.  That really is a terrible dress.

  • Joey Melliza

hasn’t she gotten over the divorce yet? … this dress is just depressing… it shouldn’t have been freed into the wild without the belt… but still… it’s sad… it’s making me cry

  • the shoes say a lot about her, she is still “locked”–the key on the other shoe isnt the right one to set her free. ooh, the prison window on the dress…

  • LLuL

I agree with all of the criticism in the comments, but dang if she doesn’t look pretty here. I applaud the attempt, but the lady needs to stand up and own the underboob if she chooses to go out in a dress that exposes it.

  • Mary Saucier

I don’t know how to say this without falling into body snarking, so I will simply say: She should employ ankle strap shoes more often. They really suit her.

  • Clearly in the minority here:  I hate those shoes.  Tom Ford has become an ‘of course’ for me.

  • Monday1900

I agree with TLo–the dress is blech and the hair is bad.  Cathy Cambridge has much to answer for.

  • Sexy turtle.

  • Imasewsure

Awful and can someone do something about the broken doll poses here? Love the shoes

  • Fordzo

Does she have scoliosis?  Stand up straight!!!!!

  • Hm. I like the choker on the model. And Katie’s shoes. The dress gives her fake abs, and although the color is great for her, the hair coves enough of it to counteract any good that would’ve done.
Also, she needs to relearn how to stand up post-Tom.

  • I wish she hadn’t chickened out on all of the funky accessories…unfortunately, the dress seems to require them!

  • She looks great from the neck up, and I like the shoes, but I CAN’T with that dress. It’s atrocious.

  • formerlyAnon

She doesn’t look awful, but that’s a triumph. Nice color, unflattering dress. Too much hair. Decent shoes.  Odd posture, but the dress might need it to keep her from looking entirely like a bolster pillow.

  • msdamselfly

The color and fabric of the dress are so pretty that I didnt notice its faults

  • Qitkat

Boy am I getting tired of these too long super scraggly hairdos, almost every one of them fake with extensions. On everyone. Hollywood/TeeVeeLand/Broadway (take your pick) have collectively decided that this is the de facto hair style for all actresses between the ages of 13 and 49.

When I had long hair, and everyone I currently know who has long hair, which were/are all completely grown by our very own hair follicles, we treated it as the glorious attractive feature that it can be, clean, shiny, properly cut, not scraggly, not badly dyed or bleached, not overly long with permanent split ends, semi-styled, combed and brushed, before we ever dreamed of setting foot outside the house. I’m not saying Katie here has violated all of that. She’s just the unfortunate woman I’ve decided this morning that I would rant about being fed up with this never-ending trend.

oh, and Katie? That is a very pretty dress on you.

/going back in the corner now/

  • It looks like a fuzzy carapace.

  • E. D.

Ugh, she should do better than this.  I could deal with the dress, but not with all of her hair hanging like that.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I was delighted to see your comments about Tom Ford’s dresses .. as I was scrolling down, I was wondering just who Tom Ford thinks he is designing for nowadays — in fact, I’d like to see the designers taken to task more often.  We can all enjoy making fun of celebs who insist on wearing ghastly, unwearable clothes, but someone ought to be calling out the designers for putting such dreck on the runway in the first place.

    • Corsetmaker

See I’m rather of the opposite opinion. I’d far rather see celebs wearing the riskier clothes, after all they don’t have to pay for them, than the same tedious round of similar stuff. If they don’t always work then, well it gives us something to talk about. Designers have to push the boundaries on the catwalk, which again sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. After all it then gets watered down for normal mortals, but the only way to get new ideas is to go to the extremes. Risk is good, there’s no point being a designer if all you can come up with is a variation on a familiar theme. We’d all be bored to tears, designers, celebs and us, if all we got was yet more Aniston-esque sequinned bathtowels.

  • decormaven

Great color on her, but if the stylist wanted to give her Tom Ford edgy, she should have gone for the metallic accent at the waist. At least she went there with the padlock shoe. I dunno, it would really take a svelte, lean torso to show off the bodice and waist accent. Kudos to Katie for at least attempting the look.

  • librarygrrl64

Yeah, all of this defines “hot mess,” fashion-wise. Sad boobs. 🙁

  • luciaphile

Katie, hun, you’re free of the short whack job. It’s okay to stand up straight.

  • Wow Tom Ford’s sliding into Stella territory with two hiddy dresses this week (so far).

  • Rebecca Jay

This is what we, at our house, call feel-dresses.  I like it.

I especially like that she ditched the wood-paneled sternal plate from the model’s version.

  • judybrowni

At the very least, try to do so when you’re getting your picture took.

  • Laylalola

I think she’s striking — there was a scene in that movie “Go” years before her marriage to Tom Cruise where she’s out walking, her legs are a mile long and she looked edgy in I think a leather jacket. The whole look really suited her. Here she looks about the best I’ve seen her post-split, but it’s still along the lines of a slightly edgier Kate Middleton.

  • Elleachaudaucul

I’m not a massive fan of the shoes (overdone, and they aren’t designed to flatter human ankles as far as I can tell), and I am definitely not convinced that they work with the dress.

  • *sigh* if only she wore a bra

  • kikisayshi

I can’t comment on the dress because of my pure apathy for velvet. I love the shoes and even more than that, I love the fact that we get to see her smiling! 🙂

  • quiltrx

At first glance, I thought “this is ok”.  Then I REALLY looked…and shuddered.  Ew, Tom Ford.

And I know some people don’t like those ‘padlock’ shoes, but I think they’re awesome!

  • Trisha26

Per the model you’re supposed to strap a giant oval board to your waist to define it and the breast above.

  • KatieKissinger

The shoes are really beautiful but the panels on her chest look like the exoskeleton of a bug.

  • bertkeeter

TF needs some serious help….He is TRYING so HARD! Ive seen this dress up close and it looks like it is made from an old purple velour jogging suit. Unfrotunately the jogging suit looked better! And what is with tose hideous shoes with the padlock on the strap!

  • Corsetmaker

The dress needs the belt, the whole thing with the original is a showcase for the accessories, it looks bare without them and the horizontal panel at the waist looks awkward. Also Katie is quite straight through the waist and hips, this just emphasises that, so she really needed the belt for definition. And the flashes don’t do velvet any favours.

On the plus side, it’s a nice colour on her and its nice to see her dressed up a bit. Unlike many, I like the shoes. The less said about the fact she clearly left her hairbrush behind the better.

  • MightyMarshal

    I see she’s developed scoliosis.

  • bitterk

Lovely shoes indeed but she looks batshit crazy. That pose better suits a crack addict looking for a trick.

  • Lola67

I’m only saying positive things today: The color is great on her, and the shoes are swell.

  • guest2visits

The color is wonderful for her; too bad the 4 little patches up front aren’t combined into one wide stripe; then she would have
the coverage she needs and a better fit.

  • Pam Winters

Love the color, love the shoes. Love/like the hair. Adore the happy expression. The weird panels on that dress are like robot King Kong fingers crushing the dear woman’s figure.

  • ccm800

lock on her ankle = statement
