Joanne Froggatt in Moschino

Posted on December 17, 2012

This is adorable:

‘Downton Abbey’ star Joanne Froggatt attends photocall at Essex House in New York City in Moschino.

Moschino Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Daga Ziober

Much as we love her character on Downton Abbey, Miss Joanne has been pretty hit-or-miss on the red carpet. And while we don’t love anything regarding her face and hair, we have to say the dress and the little purse are working like gangbusters. She’s tailor-made for that mid-sixties British “dolly bird” style.

Are we all counting the days, Downton-philes? You can get all your obsessive, pre-season 3 needs met in the following video. Grab a sandwich and enjoy:

  • It’s like her character from Life on Mars got all dressed up!

    • Qitkat

I had to look up IMDB to see who she played, and suddenly it came back to me. Loved the Brit version.

  • Mary Quant-tastic. Not sure about the shoes though.

    • VanessaDK

Yes!  She was made for the sixties!

  • thecitysleeps

This is so quintessentially British and so perfect.  I personally even like her puffy braid.

  • Sobaika

Oooo, I love it, hair and makeup included. It”s a bit jarring (especially because it’s a teensy bit messy and we’re used to her in full Downton garb) but I can get onboard.

  • Un-muss the hair and this would be a WERQ for me.

  • In_Stitches

I love her name.  Had she come up through LA instead of London, you can be sure they would have been quizzing her on her familial background, searching for a more dramatic, elegant surname by which to sell her.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Sorry, I just can’t.  She looks twee as f____.

  • fringebenefit

hair and makeup perfect for dress and bag, which are utterly divine…slightly–but not too–mussed hair keeps the look from coming off as constumey

  • Deedles

They look like Bunny Butts on her skirt!

    • kimmeister

I immediately saw Playboy bunnies myself.

    • Lily-Rygh

I instantly thought of Easter bunnies.

  • Trisha26

It looks very junior to me. And the appliques (?) at the bottom look like cutesy bunnies seen from the back with flower “tails.”

  • Judy_J

With the exception of the heels, this is a very mid-’60s, Mary Quant-type look. Hair and makeup are spot-on.

  • Calinda_L

When in doubt, listen to Coco! She should have taken off or simplified one element (probably the hair or makeup). Now, the outfit is pretty great but it looks like it’s wearing her, when she should be wearing it. I do love her and all those Downton ladies, though, and will generally give them more of a pass than I would otherwise.

  • CeeQ

Can. Not. Wait. Till. January. 6!!!!!!!!!!
    And TLo’s recaps =)

  • MilaXX

I’m not feeling this 100%. The hair is CMT awards. The makeup is a tad harsh, I’d prefer a cat eye. Not crazy about the bag with the suit either.

  • Monday1900

Adore the outfit, I think the bag tips it into Twee Territory but I’ll overlook it.

  • Twiggy Realness!

    • VanessaDK

       Yes–especially the wide eyes!

  • I’m loving this look for her. the dress is fun, graphic and has just the right kind of punch to it.  The hair style though, I’m not on board with.  Particularly that half assed looking pig tail thingy.

  • At first glance, I thought she had playboy bunny heads all the around the bottom of her dress. Cute though, and I even kind of like her hair.

  • Now that IS Dusty Springfield realness! Love the look from head to toe – yes, even the hair.

  • SewingSiren

    Bunnies! Cute.

  • ankali

Wish the dress were A-line and not belted, but it’s still cute. LOVE the little paper-boat bag!

  • Cute dress, but I hate the hair.

  • I like the hair and make-up too

  • Isn’t she cold with those bare legs? it’s winter in New York!

    • She’s Northern – those girls don’t feel the cold.

  • That purse completes me.

  • Thank you!

  • kategs

She’s got the most gorgeous eyes and I am in lust with that bag.  I’d like the skirt/dress about 3 inches longer meself…

  • Puck Thornton

Honey, don’t forget your feet when you use self tanner.

  • Anathema_Device

Since we’re sharing Downton Abbey clips, have you seen the Downton Abbey/Breaking Bad clips from the Colbert Report? Funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time:

As for Ms. Froggatt: I’d lose the bow at the neck and change the hair, but otherwise, I like the look.

  • nannypoo

The hair and makeup are great with this dress. She and Daisy both look so pretty in the video.

  • Yes!!! Counting down the days!!!

  • decormaven

I’m fine with the hair- TLo got it right (of course!) – perfect dolly bird style. The purse is a little too precious for my taste, but she looks great, nonetheless.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I’m on board.  The top of the hair is a little poufy for my taste, but I’m ok with the messy braid.  Agree with others that the purse leans a little twee – still like it very much anyway.  Very cute look, and not one all people could pull off.  I like!

  • Her hair goes with the look.

  • That purse! *grabbyhands*

  • crash1212

I am loving this look – every bit of it – especially the hair and make-up. That paper-hat purse is the best thing I’ve seen all day. Perfect.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

    It’s Bardot-rable!

  • Wow – she stepped right out of the pages of my 1968 year book! Love it!

  • RocknRollmom

I get the 60’s Mary Quant vibe, but this would look so much better on Elle Fanning.  The bag is adorable, but I really think you need to be under 18 to pull it off well, and of course no teenager should own a bag that costs a bag with 4 digits in its price tag.

  • Qitkat

Ooohh, *dolly bird* was what I thought too. So adorable. To me she looks young enough here to pull it off. Wrong shoes though, for the complete sixties vibe.

For those saying it is too junior, I would venture to say that the original Mary Quant type looks were rather junior in style, but were so refreshing and bold for the times, that they were embraced by a host of women of various ages, because it was just so liberating to be able to dress this way.

  • judybrowni

SPOILER ALERT: I’ve already seen Season Three and it is faboo.

    Enjoy the deliciousness, everyone.

  • travelingcat

Thank you TLo for the Downtown Q&A link!

  • Stubenville

This looks like what a small child would wear to a funeral. Juvenile.

  • quiltrx

All I can see (in this color combo, not the others shown, for some reason) is Flower Playboy Bunnies.

But that bag is too adorable!

  • RzYoung

She’s cute as  a button. I ADORE that bag!!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Can’t HEAR!!! What am I missing.

  • christinewithanx

Do you think she likes her makeup kind of overdone to prove she’s not Miss Plain Anna?

  • Thank you so much for that video! It’ll be my special treat once I’ve eaten my peas (metaphorically) today.

  • mmc2315

Adorbs!  Great choice with the hair style and outfit.

Although I’m handing her a kerchief so she can go to the mirror and take off some of that under eye smear.

  • guest2visits

Cute dress and accessories, but the hair and make-up are alittle brittle looking. The pouf is too dry and crispy,
even though I like the idea of a braid. I think the hair should have been more easy to give some relief to the primness of the
    entire outfit.

  • Judih1

Love the purse and the outfit – just not together. Shoes, hair and makeup are a mess

  • kathrineb

I Love this look! She pulls of this sort make up really well and the dress is super cute cute! I really love a bit of 60s mod!
