IN or OUT: Viola Davis in Alberta Ferretti

Posted on December 04, 2012

We pretty much love this:

Viola Davis attends CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute in Los Angeles, California in an Alberta Ferretti dress accessorized with Atelier Swarovski by Nicholas Kirkwood hoop earrings.

Alberta Ferretti Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Mirte Maas

Love the hair, love the face, love the hoops, love the shoes. We likebutnotlove the Tron dress. It’s interesting, and we applaud her for not going the leather-and-sheer route, but we’re not sure we love this color on her and the placement of the racing stripes, well… they’re no unflattering so much as we think they tend to make her look just a tiny bit wider than she is. Which isn’t a crime or a disaster, especially since she’s killing it on every other front. We’re about 98% positive on this look, but we’re curious as to what the kittens think: is she killing it on all fronts or do you feel there are problems that need to be addressed?

Vote Now!

IN! Killing it on all fronts!

OUT! Because of problems that I will now address!

The minions with opinions rose up as one and declared Morena Baccarin’s latest disaster to be O to the UT.

      in.  Love her face.

      • Ms_Flyover

Viola Davis + that smile = Auto IN.  I realize it’s not the point of the blog, but she’s pretty in to me regardless of the clothes. (Meryl Streep and Julie Walters among others get the same by.)

Having said that, I think she look great, and while I find the stripes a little much, I generally think it is a very flattering look.  But mostly, it’s the face.

    • lalahartma

      Oh, I don’t know.  I don’t like it.

      • http://promiscuouslola.com/ Cate

Love her, love the dress. The drag makeup does not work for me! Do not want.
Also, I love her natural hair, but I wish she would change the colour. I don’t think it flatters her. For some reason black women always get weaves in that shade and it’s not flattering on anyone. Personal peeve of mine.

    • VicksieDo

IN!  Lovely color on her and I like the racing stripes.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Maybe it’s the angle of the photograph, but the silver on the dress is giving her weird curves. And the pink/silver combo doesn’t have the edge that leather/sheer does. It’s an old lady dress with sparkles. OUT

    • Judy_J

I prefer the black runway version, but that pale pink and gold looks good on Viola.  And I love it when she rocks her natural hair.  IN.

    • http://twitter.com/NormDeplume720 Norm Deplume

I’d like the dress better on someone else, but I can’t hate on it her. She pulls it off pretty well.

    • Sara__B

The dress is OUT. The rest of her is IN.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I love the face, hair, makeup. I hate the dress. It makes her shoulders look insanely broad. Linebacker broad.

      Out.

      IN

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

      In. Lovely.

    • charlotte

I agree that the stripes make her look wider, but whatever. Still killing it. I love her and vote her IN.

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

Love it. She’s killing it. Total IN!

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

It’s IN and you know it. And I think it makes her figure rocking.

      • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

Thank you!  It does indeed.  IN

      • Vickiefantastico

Completely agree! Big IN for me.

    • tereliz

IN! What’s not to love? I think the stripes on the dress flow over her curves in a lovely way and I think the color on her is TO. DIE. (In real life I bet the color is more of a muted rose than this baby puke pink but the hot yellow lights are really washing it out.)

LOVE LOVE LOVE that she’s decided to embrace her actual hair because it is so much more becoming on such a beautiful, statuesque woman than her wigs.

    • leslied11

      LOVE it.  In!

    • Julie Fountain

IN! I think she looks fantastic. It is a blah color but she’s working it because of her darker skin. On pale skin this dress wouldn’t work at all.  I love the sequins and the graphic pattern.

    • kimmeister

In, although she’s not killing it on all fronts.  The hair is great, much better now that the color isn’t the same has her skin color.  However, the disconnect between her hair color and brow color bugs.

    • girliecue

Hate the dress color and the lipstick color with the dress color with the passion of a thousand burning suns, but that’s actually not enough to make this an out (Ijust love hyperbole with every fiber of my body and soul). Miss V look D-vine so she’s In!

    • mjude

      IN

    • kayleymaybe

IN!  Love her.  And, I think it makes her look curvy and sexy, not wide.

    • Rand Ortega

      IN.
Must admit a Viola bias. She could wear the proverbial trash bag & still be stylish & gorgeous. Even her gums are perfect.

    • clevRcat

IN.  Not an overwhelming IN (something odd about the shape) but a mild to moderate IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

In.  She looks so happy and also, my first reaction on looking at this snapshot was that she’d dropped some weight.

    • editrixie

      IN. in in in.

    • StellaZafella

IN a great big ol’ IN: When I opened the post I said to myself, “Self, I wonder why this ain’t a WERQ?”

    • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

IN. The makeup is a little heavy, but dayum, the color of that Tron dress is so spot on lovely on her, and the bronzey accents are killing it, esp. with her hair.

    • msdamselfly

In Love the dress and color but do not like the eye makeup

    • hughman

I think she looks awesome. What’s more, she looks like she’s actually enjoying herself and not just being forced at gunpoint to make an appearance *coughKristenStewartcough*.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mattdavie Matthew Davie

Out.  But only because she’s set such a high bar with previous looks.  This is just….eh.  The pink color is just….off and too dusty, doesn’t suit her skin tone. Also, lip color is weird and too clown-red.

    • Kristy Evans

I LOVE the dress. I HATE the makeup. It’s terrible. But I’ll say IN, since the rest is all pretty much perfect.

      • carpediva

Yes, I saw all the raves and wondered “Wow, does no one else think she looks clownish?”

I actually let out a spontaneous “Yikes” when I got to that pic.

    • decormaven

Stuck! I wish she had chosen the runway version. She could pull that black/bronze off with the right accessories.

    • gsk241

In, but I wish the dress were a more vibrant color.  Also, I want her earrings.

    • Trisha26

Out. And I think her makeup looks garish.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Agree. I feel like her hair color and lipstick clash. Or something. Whatever it is, it really bugs me when I look at these photos. The dress and shoes look just fine, though.

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

There’s nothing I don’t like about it – and I think the color is amazing on her. Love the hair. IN.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like the dress, but I hate the color she dyed her hair. And I don’t like the makeup. The lips clash with the hair and the face has so much product on that you could carve it with a spoon.

    • MissMariRose

IN and I hope she never wears another wig. I love, love, love her natural hair.

    • formerlyAnon

In, but with reservations. Possibly misguided reservations.

Color perception is not my strongest suit and lighting can do weird things, but there’s something about the combo of hair, lip and dress colors that does not work for me. I want to blame it on the lip, but that’s mostly because that’s the easiest one to change.

(ETA: I like the dress. Would like it better if the stripes were not reflective – because then they would show up in [what I think is] their actual bronzy color rather than shiny silver, but that’s a personal bias.)

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

OUT. I suspect if it was any other color, I’d be ok with it. She’s gorgeous, otherwise.

    • ralish

Out. Her makeup is absolutely terrible, the dress color is boring, and her lovely figure has been obscured by the combination of the dress shape and the lines. I do like the shoes, hair and earrings though.

    • AlexisPayne

In! Love this, love her, luke warm about the shoes.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

      IN. She looks gorgeous.

    • RocknRollmom

In–love the color, love her eye makeup.  Dress is ok, like the color.  Agree re black/sheer comment.  Selective out–shoe is too clunky and lip color is just off.  She is still stunning.

    • Imasewsure

Don’t like the makeup but I like the dress on her, even in the pink. IN

    • AuntJentie

      IN

    • BrooklynBomber

      Problems:
      Eye makeup (too much)
      Dress: not flattering, figure-wise
Shoes: not working with dress AT ALL

      BUT:
It’s a cool dress, and I love that pink shade on her.

      Therefore: IN

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

      In! She looks space age-tastic!

    • leftcoastpickle

IN, I think that dress looks great on her.

    • MrsMaxPower

In a million times…that beaming smile kills it

    • tallgirl1204

Absolutely killing it.  I noticed this on-line yesterday and thought “I hope TLo loves this as much as I do.”

I’m not normally fond of pink on anyone, but it works on her, and also because the dress is fierce, not frilly.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Oh, see, I wasn’t seeing Tron as much as I see Art Deco and since I love Art Deco and I think this does great things to her shape, I’m giving it an IN.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. Not enamoured of the dress but as always, she looks fabulously put together.

    • NCDFan

In. The runway version looks like some kind of bondage thing. In pink, the dress is totally different. Like the pink against her skin tones. Don’t totally like the placement of the silver racing stripes but I still like it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

      Love it!

    • alyce1213

Sorry to say, but out.  This dress should be a deep color with light racing stripes to be flattering.
I dont like the lipstick color, but I love her smile.
Her hair may be a little too red — rich brown may be more sophisticated.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

In but not IN. It’s December – pale pink, sleeveless, sandals and bare legs? In another colour – maybe a royal blue – with different accessories it’d be in-er.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I’m a fan. That pink would be too sweet on most women but looks fierce against her skin tone. IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

The hip stripes are where it loses me. Without those stripes, I would give this an absolute in. For now, a tentative in; that one detail is what takes this dress into “too much” territory for me.

    • CeeQ

IN but I think she could have rocked the leather version. Also: I hate the shoes.

    • marilyn

Barelly an Out.  The color of the dress does nothing for her, and the metallic racing stripes, ditto.  However, I applaud the fact the design is not expected on her.  I think the placement of the stripes was not quite right for her.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

      Totally IN. She’s fierce!

    • Jangle57

I don’t like the color of the dress but mostly I think this is fine.  IN

    • jilly_d

I wish she hadn’t worn that lip color with it, but still IN.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I don’t love it.  The color has possibilities for her, but the racing stripes are just gimmicky and strange.  And unflattering.  OUT.

    • warnerave

no that bad to be an out… IN… barely…

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

      Killing it dead. IN.

    • kim flodin

I think she looks great; IN.

    • MilaXX

      IN!
      She looks great.

    • tojojo

      OUT

Her make-up gun setting is on too high. It’s on ‘Van Gogh’.

    • holdstillnow

As much as I want to love it, I think the dress makes her look like a brick.  Maybe narrower shoulder straps were in order.  But my biggest problem is how much the green eye-shadow doesn’t work with her hair color.  Or how the haircolor doesn’t work with the dress color.  I guess mostly I don’t like her haircolor.  OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joy.yeager Joy Yeager

      In, she looks gorgeous!

    • kikisayshi

I don’t think I would like this dress on anyone else, but somehow it’s working for her. Then again, she can work the shit out of pretty much anything – she always looks so happy! The length is perfect and the Tron stripes aren’t doing her any favors, but they aren’t working against her either. The color makes it interesting. Totally IN.

    • JasmineAM

I’m a sucker for Tron. IN

    • Anathema_Device

I like the darker version better, but I can’t argue with how pretty she looks, so: IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=724916801 facebook-724916801

Funny, I like the dress but not so loving the makeup palette WITH this dress.  I think the dress suits her and looks great.

    • lizajane1776

      In. Fun.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I always love Viola Davis, but I love her even more when she’s going natural with her hair.  The dress?  For me, if the stripes were not shiny I”d being liking it more.

      • l_c_ann

But the hair color!  I think it would be better (and a better color with the dress).  IN, sort of.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

I don’t think the color is bad on her.  And I think the dress is interesting enough.  She knew not to go overboard on the jewelry, hair & makeup, and make the dress (and slight less so the shoes), the focal point.

      Definitely IN.

    • BobStPaul

She’s consistently one of the best dressed and best looking women on the runway but personally I think this is one of her weakest looks ever.   Out.

    • Noelle Haland

In. Full stop. I think the stripes enhance her curves, the color is great on her, and she’s killing it an all fronts.

    • Noelle Haland

IN. Full stop. The stripes enhance her gorgeous curves, the gold accents in the dress and accessories look great and the blush color is beautiful on her. She’s killing it all over the place.

    • BuffaloBarbara

In, though I really want the stripes to not be shiny.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Killing it.  Don’t love the shoes, but that’s a minor quibble.

    • Allison Woods

      Out.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

IN. Love the dress…the shoes not so much. Also I don’t really like the way the earrings stick out from her head. (I also have ears that are flat to my head and I avoid hoop earrings because I hate the way they stick out like that. Just me perhaps.)

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

in. not a werq, but definitely an in!

    • CatherineRhodes

      IN

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

I don’t love the dress at all and I wish the color was a little less pink-ish, but it’s interesting. Everything else is so good, it’s an IN for me.

    • altalinda

Out because of the racing stripes, which are distracting and widening.  Everything else looks very nice, though.

    • guest2visits

I love the dress; but I think the shoes make it too disco – a more serious, less strappy look, maybe a pointed shoe in a solid shade.

    • mom2ajs5

In. I think she looks fab!

    • SewingSiren

In. Much better than the runway version.

    • demidaemon

I actually appreciate the changes she made/chose. The only problem I have is the bright red lip–I think it is overpowering her face. Still, good on most fronts. IN.

    • ojosazules

Can’t love the Tron stripes. I tried. The earrings are hanging at an odd angle. Her makeup is too harsh. Compared to a mere mortal she looks amazing, but Out.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

In, in, in!! I think she looks stellar, though I think the makeup is caked on a bit too heavily.

    • demondoll

      In. She’s gorgeous.

    • crash1212

I’m giving it an IN because I really like the version of the dress she chose. I find the make-up to be scary/harsh and don’t like the red lip at all. Great hair. And even better smile.

    • barbarienne

      IN.

I’m not as sanguine about her face as you and other BKs are. I don’t really dig the heavy colors painted on. I know it’s trickier for darker complexions, but there’s no blending there–those gold lines are bugging me. I don’t want to see the brushstrokes. Also, I hate painted-on eyebrows, but I will forgive them here because it looks as if she hasn’t got much eyebrow without the paint.

But the IN is because I love the dress. I think the color is great on her. Does it make her a tad thicker than reality? Who cares, it still looks fab. I adore her hair. I like the shoes. I don’t know if the earrings are rose gold or just picking up some pink from the dress, but they’re great too.

    • leave_Blake_alone

Ooh sorry but OUT. Something just feels really off about the dress, and I don’t think that hair works for this particular look.

    • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

Dress is not her color and the make-up cheapens it. OUT.

    • RoxieRider

      In. She looks hella cool.

    • pdquick

WAY, WAY IN. The tint in her hair works because of the pink dress.  I love the angularity of the dress contrasted with her natural curves. Gorj!

    • sweetlilvoice

Out! I also think the makeup is a bit heavy but her smile is lovely.

    • trisker

IN – the dress fits perfectly and is the perfect length.  Don’t quite understand the eyebrows.  I think, though, that she looks lovely and comfortable.  IN.

In, but I wish the stripes weren’t quite so shiny.

    • jw_ny

I don’t like this look, but still an IN.

The silver racing stripes framing her boobs is awkward and too much a contrast with pink; they’re much more subtle on the black version.  I do like the black version, but know that the shear stripes would not be suitable for Ms. Davis unless lined.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

In. I even like the dress.

    • miagain

in… I’d hazard a guess that the color is washed out by the photog’s lights.

    • Deb Oswald

Its the background color- if it were darker you could see her true shape and size better.  I think she looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/marared Jaime

The neckline needs to be about an inch lower – to the racing stripe – and the shoulder fabric needs to be about an inch narrower. She’s much too broad across the shoulder for that cut.

    • procrastinatrice

I have to say Out. The lipstick clashes badly with the dress, and so do the gold earrings with the stripes. And those racing stripes look tacky IMHO. I love the runway version much more. Viola is cool–just not in this dress and this make up.

    • mmc2315

      IN.

It’s not her best, that’s for sure.  The color (lack of), the neckline (too high)….but the problems do not come anywhere close to tipping her into OUT territory.
