IN or OUT: Kelly Rowland at ‘VH1 Divas’

Posted on December 17, 2012

Normally we love pretty much everything Miss Kelly does from a style perspective, but we’re having trouble with this one:

Kelly Rowland attends “VH1 Divas” 2012 in Los Angeles

Is it dramatic? Yes. Is that color gorgeous on her? Also yes. Do we like the lapels? In theory, yes. But the thing is, this is all so satiny-cheap-looking and poorly fitted to her that we’re having serious issues. In addition, the shoes don’t go; the hair’s too severe, and the red nails take it into a too-literal Christmas area. First impulse: gasp-worthy. Nano-second later second impulse: Oooooh, girl. We don’t know…

Vote Now!

IN! I’m all about the DRAMA!

OUT! I’m all about the TASTE and the FIT!

The decision regarding Kelly’s former co-worker’s too-tight dress was that it was OUT.

Put the satin Christmas sheets back on the bed Kelly, OUT

    • Both the fitted & flat sheets went into the making of this dress.  Out indeed!

  • Cut the train a little bit and fit it better, and I think this would have stayed gasp-worthy despite the other styling issues.

    • ampg

My thoughts exactly.  I think I will still say it’s IN, though.

  • captrenault

The dress doesn’t know what it wants to be, and as a result, no-one knows how to wear it.  OUT.

    • miagain

You’re so right… the top looks too informal to have a big, trailing train, and the train makes it look like the dress is stretching and dragging behind her.

      • lizajane1776

Reminds me of Cyd Charisse’s dress in the dream sequence in Singin’ In The Rain.
I don’t hate it enough to give it an out, but there is enough to dislike that I can’t give it an in, either.

  • Allison Harris

The breast pocket makes me think of men’s jammies. Very formal men’s jammies.

  • Eva_baby

I’m going with an OUT.  It looks bed-sheety.  Sure it is satin, not percale, but still bed-sheety.

  • Jessica Rowe

OUT!!! oh the puckering! the puckering!!!

  • rloliveira

The dress looks like a sateen sheet pinned at the waist, something I might have done as a child to make a ball gown to prance around the basement in. And the shoes are very bad.

  • Michael_Jones

I’m voting OUT. I like the idea of the lapels but not the execution, I hate the satin, and the really really long hem just feels kind of “unresolved” to me…

  • Kate4queen

Out because it doesn’t fit or flatter her at all.

  • OUT – although if it was a peignoir I would say IN.

  • Monday1900

Out–tacky fabric, bad fit and a chest pocket on a formal gown?!

  • OUT. It’s too big, the shoes are ugly, and it’s too shiny.

  • Out
Its just plain too big on her. it doesn’t fit properly anywhere.  Also, the notion of the lapels is an intersting one, but rendering them in bias cut satin makes them go limp and lifeless.  And though the train is grand and fun, the front hem is a good 3 inches too long. Its a miracle the poor dear didn’t do a headed in this while attempting to walk.

  • That thing is puckering something awful.

  • Rand Ortega

This look reminds me of that old Folger’s Coffee commercial:
Narrator: “We’ve substituted their usual Fierce, Fabulous Kelly, w/ a cheaper, matronly version.
    Let’s watch their response.”

  • Diane Lynch

Out. She’s so pretty. That dress is not.

  • Kyle Crawford

    who ?

  • another_laura

It looks chip.  Chip in a chip way.

  • bertkeeter

OUT! Someone needs to go back to sewing 101!

  • Pants_are_a_must

But she deserves a big “YOU TRIED” star for this. OUT.

  • Introspective

the seaming looks hurried, and especially horrendous at the waist. The fit as well as the cut of the bodice makes this svelte woman look positively boxy. the satin shiny fabric is HIDDY!! (I am a one-woman crusade against shiny satin. really.)

the shoes are a misstep- fierce yes, but with another outfit, like maybe Miley’s Kamali cutout extravaganza a few posts ago. and all the fabric pooling at the bottom is just further making this look an untailored mess.Kelly is gorgeous but even she cant pull this off. Girl bye. OUT

  • AuntJentie

  • Ali Quirk

    she needs some retro hair

  • Cheap looking and ill fitted is right.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Taste and fit. OUT.

  • Judy_J

Taste, fit, and awful shoes.  OUT.

  • Adriana_Paula

  • rissa42210

Out.  I want it to work on pure drama factor, but it just doesn’t.

  • As a negligee, in.  For public consumption, OUT.  Although it is a gorgeous color on her.

  • MilaXX

OUT, it all misses the mark. She can and has done better.

  • MightyMarshal

Add a belt, some metallic shoes, some bigger hair and some showier makeup and this would be amazing.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

    Majour OUT.

  • SewingSiren

    Ankle monitor chic.

  • Sobaika

Out, from head to toe. The styling issues are pretty big mistakes, not to mention the puckering and bad fit of the dress. I expect better from you, Kelly.

  • StellaZafella

From the waist up it’s an office blouse…from the waist down it’s a bed sheet from a cheap motel.
Not, by my standards, the definition of “day-to-evening” wear.

But boy is she a pretty woman…that smile!

  • jw_ny

OUT  Kelly usually gets it right, so she’s held to a higher standard.

Is it a wrap dress that thinks it’s a tuxedo that thinks it’s a formal gown…I just don’t know.  I do like the attempt at the tuxedo top and think in another fabric with more of a column shape and no train, this could have been good.  As is, the fabric and fit are wrong…seams puckering, too drape-y, train too long,  and those shoes were an awful choice.

  • marilyn

Barely an Out.  I am on the fence about this one.  The tacky shiny fabric, and the too-long train tip it to Out.

  • kschwarting

On the plus side, she looks great from the neck up and the color is killer on her, as you said.  It’s the fit issues that destroy it for me.

  • MissMariRose

Girl, that’s not your hairstyle. OUT

  • As the baby chick was fond of saying, “Cheep, cheep, cheep.”

  • elemspbee

this dress is a mess. it’s a robe with a bedsheet attached as its train.

  • elemspbee

    oh that’s OUT.

  • out; and she should have worn a better bra.

  • Qitkat

    Smoking Jacket → Evening Gown.
    Not a good idea.

  • unbornfawn

Easy OUT. The dress doesn’t fit her curves properly. It is too long. The fabric looks cheap. Glad she’s wearing a bra, but I don’t want to see it. Ugly shoes. The hair and make-up does nothing for her. And ladies, quit with the leg sprawled out of the slit pose already.

  • out it makes her look wide.  girlfriend is not wide.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Out – terrible fit.

  • Deb_Lynn

It SHOULD be a great dress and a great look, but the material just looks so sad and droopy and wrinkly and puckery. If it was a stiffer material, same look, with maybe a more structured upper body shape, it would be an unquestionable WERQ. Unfortunately, it is an OUT, but it really should be an IN.

  • Jangle57

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much fabric and cheap satiny looking fabric at that.   OUT

  • teensmom99

Looks like she’s wearing mommy’s clothes for dress up.

  • mmc2315

When the page loaded, and before the scroll down, I couldn’t imagine what was wrong.  Then ==gasp== it’s all wrong from the waist down.  Sorry Kelly, it’s an OUT.

  • OUT, mostly due to the fit. It’s a cold and bitter Christmas Kitten, here in this computer room.

  • In_Stitches

Everything about this look, but for the nail polish I suppose, is tame and there isn’t anything tame about a diva.  Great dress and necklace for the FLOTUS, not for Kelly Rowland at the Vh1 Divas event.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Nice color on her, but it fits like a bathrobe. OUT.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I think I passed right by the gasp-worthy part and went straight to ‘what in the hell were you thinking?’ part.  I love her ring, but that is about it.

  • kmk05

From the neck up? A resounding YES.But the fit is painful D: Maybe if the fabric pooled around her ankles/behind her instead of like some sort of demented mermaid tail? I dunno, but it’s an OUT for me.

  • It’s way too Phylicia Rashad for Miss Kelly. She needs to work those gams and that booty! Somebody needs to break out the scissors.

  • l_c_ann

Terrible fit, how can so much fabric look so “too much skin in the wrong places”?

  • EEKstl

OUT.  Disaster, start to finish.  It’s like a “Designer Red Carpet Look!” knockoff you’d see at Dress Barn.  And fits about as well.  And don’t get me started on the nails and shoes.  Do like her hair, tho.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • OUT. Too many parts with issues to make a good whole look.  I think the hair is much to severe and the dress is poorly fit. Damn shame.

  • Wendi126

Scarlett O’Hara called and she wants her portieres back. Out

  • gabbilevy

OUT. But if it fit properly, it might be an in.

  • alyce1213

IN.  Maybe the hair’s too tight, the nails are childish, it’s too long, the fabric is well . . .
The overall look is smashing, she is serving it up.

  • Hahahahhahahahahaaaa … hilariously OUT!

  • IN. I agree about the fabric and fit, but the overall look is striking.

  • judybrowni

Somebody’s going to step on that train, and then we’ll have a train wreck.

  • My mother used to have a satin robe that looked pretty much exactly like this… She just needs some sheer sleeves and some fuzzy slippers.

  • mjude

  • Zofia Śniegocka

I love the color of the dress in the close-ups, and overall I think it is more polished than not. So an IN for me. Plus, I love the nail polish!

  • OUT

  • formerlyAnon

To get away with that much green satin train the body of the dress needs to look like it’s fitted to *her* not just in her general size range. Very reluctant out.

  • oohsparkley!

I was going to vote in before glancing at the first page of comments. So I looked again and concluded that it looks too big for her. Out.

  • procrastinatrice

OUT. I hate the nails and the shoes in particular, but yeah, the dress is on the tackier side, and the hair looks horrific from the front, when you can’t see the ponytail.

  • Sara__B

OUT. Nothing is working, especially not the fit or proportions.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Out. The fit of the dress is unfortunate.

  • Out: Bathrobe.

  • crash1212

Out. Coulda been a contender – but fit is everything, and this thang don’t fit. Also, I truly hate sparkly nail polish. HATE.

  • Joyce VG

OUT. It doesn’t fit her well for goodness sakes.

  • kimmeister

I had fabulous green satin pajamas that looked much like this, the difference being that I didn’t wear them in public (ok once, but I was tricked into that).  The effect is just shapeless and droopy here, so out.

Her eye makeup, on the other hand, is flawless.  I just wish she didn’t have that weird upper lipliner going on.

  • Moira MacDougal

OUT! It clearly doesn’t fit her, could have been an IN, but just didn’t work out.

  • the hair is wrong and she needs a bolder lip with this look. sooo much volume on the bottom makes her head look tiny (and also like aisha tyler?) i do like the cutesy christmas call out with the red sparkle nails.

  • FrayedMachine

Hate the hair, hate the length, Hate the shape, not very flattering on a gorgeous girl like her. Love the color, though? Ugh. Out.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i think her hair is severe and i agree with tlo’s assessment but i’m still going to go with IN because this is some high drama she’s wearing.

  • No. It looks like she’s wearing her mother’s fortiers…

  • Unintentionally baggy gown with shoes that’d go with leather skinnies? OUT.

  • Out.  It somehow seems to obvious for her.  She’s normally really chic and occasion-appropriate while maintaining a personal stamp.  Not here.  Anyone could have worn this (and looked just as bad).

  • Scott Isaacs

Out. Too blocky. And that hair is insane. Looks like it’s doing a face lift all by itself. She’s gorgeous, no doubt. And I will say it’s not an egregious out. Just thiiiis side of out.

  • B_C_J

The fit is not good. The bodice looks very large.  Also the length of the train of the dress is ludicrous. It looks silly. She could be half way into a room and the dress is still on the door steps. The shoes are hideous.  Her makeup is nice. Overall this is OUT.

  • The train takes it into OUT territory for me.

  • Imasewsure

  • Janet B

    Good idea, bad execution.

  • Trisha26

Out. Aside from length & no sleeves it looks like a “cheaply glamorous” bathrobe.

  • Monabel

She could invite a friend to join her in that cheesy bedsheet. Out.

  • OUT.  She’s usually so good at dressing to show off her astonishing body (and yet without looking “too much”).  This is a bridesmaid’s dress with a train, right on down to the bad fit.  Did I already say OUT?

  • Candigirl1968

OUT.  Bad fit, bad fabric, bad shoes.

  • CeeQ

Oooh sorry this is an OUT….awful.

  • ankali

OUT for fitting her like a sack. Too bad, because this dress properly fitted would have been a winner.

  • snarkykitten

Waist up is fabulous. But something about the shinyness and the length makes the dress look really cheap. Bummer!

  • altalinda

FIrst impulse here:  satiny cheap looking.  OUT!

  • kikisayshi

OUT. Kinda looks like a Project Runway castoff. Though I actually do like her hair and makeup.

  • julnyes

It is an OUT, but I love her eye make-up.

  • jmorino08

I have sparkly red finger nails, too! I am not, however, wearing a dress with a 6-foot long train.

Satin always looks tortured under such heavy light. Doesn’t help it either way. OUT.

  • Beardslee

  • SorayaS

I think a big part of it is the hair and make up- it might be a great look for another dress but doesn’t really complement this look. She makes the dress work but I think hair, make up and those shoes push it into OUT.

  • kategs

    Out.  It just doesn’t fit!

  • stagmania

OUT. Hate the satin look, and it doesn’t fit properly.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. Unflattering style, poor fit. Looks like a Girl Scout gown, with that color and the lapels.

  • BobStPaul

    Out.  ‘nuf said.

  • decormaven

That’s enough fabric to swaddle the whole Nativity scene. Out.

  • OrigamiRose

The fit bothered me the most; I can’t help thinking a bit more form-fitting and the fabric might not have appeared to look so cheap.

As for the polish color, though I don’t particularly like holiday shout-outs, I will take a pretty red over those horrid shades of black I keep seeing.

Edited to Add: I’ll give her an “in.” The things I don’t like are rather limited, and I think the positives outweigh those things.

  • And her makeup & accessories look great PLUS she’s got a killer smile!  The color looks dynamite on her.  Fit issues but IN.

  • Sorry, Kelly, but this ill fitting mess is OUT.

  • demidaemon

This looks like a draped bedsheet to me. Do love the face she is giving in that first picture though. Still, sadly, OUT.

  • OUT.
i do love the severe hair. and i love the menswear inspired part of the gown.
but it looks like a project runway dress: good idea, but the challenge forced the designer to work with an impossible material, and he didnt have enough time to finish it correctly.

  • trisker

OUT – way too droopy on the bottom and all gappy on top.

  • littlemac8

OUT, sorry Kelly, the green is delicious; there, I said something positive!

  • AlexisPayne

    Feels like a miss. OUT

  • bitterk

    Very much a miss. o u t.

  • elleg929

OUT – She can do so much better than this!

  • Hate the fabric and the lapels but that first shot with the train is sickening so I forgive the rest.

  • Jillaine13

OUT.  Way too long train, fabric and fit issues and clodhoppers with a gown?  Some things could have been corrected but out as is.

  • IN.

  • guest2visits

Too much dress; but a great color and I love the hair, the nails, the jewelry.

  • Ooooh, no. That would be OUT.

  • TLJezebel

A pocket over her left boob?  I just can’t.

  • Oh my goodness this is so out.  It hurts my eyes.  I have to look away.

  • velomango

With triceps and a smile like that, who needs to critique her clothing? Lady is an IN. She looks splendid.

  • Call me Bee

If that dress did not have a 900 foot train and were fitted a bit better, then it would be passable (Great color, nice design, love the lapels.)  As it is–no.  OUT.

  • pookiesmom

Oh, no. This looks terrible. Horribly unflattering, and she doesn’t even have much to unflatter!

  • carpediva

OUT. It’s the fabric.  It looks like a Project Runway challenge: Make a gown out of a gigolo’s sheets! In 15 minutes!

I’m picturing it in a heavier crepe (is that a thing?) and it is divine.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  It really looks cheap…like a really dramatic soap-opera nightgown.

And a dress that humongous needs something bigger than stuck-to-the-head hair (with giant fake ponytail) to balance it out.

  • ccm800

    um. no OUT

  • RzYoung

Out. I didn’t realise she could look anything but good. Guess we’re all human!

  • Out. The ill-fitting, sleeveless, double-breasted suit top makes me think Flintstone. Also, I love google image searches:

It needs a big, dramatic belt.  Maybe black patent? And NO the nail polish and hair.

  • IN but only because I saw this, I actually said out loud “I bet this feels amazing on.”
I’m very tactile and this looks like it feels good haha

  • neofashionista

it simple does not fit her

  • Top half: IN.
Bottom half: OUT… and all the way across the neighbour’s courtyard.

  • Oh, Kelendria… Out.

  • Is her ring the ouroboros knot from The Neverending Story?

  • SpillinTea

The snatched ponytail..mmmm no. If she was wearing her fro-wig, I’d be LIVING.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

Beyonce’s was too tight; this is too baggy. OUT

  • librarygrrl64

It looks like cheap polyester. OUT.

  • shanteUstay

She is a teeny little thing and she looks huge in the dress, out

  • barbarienne

I disagree that this color is gorgeous on her. It’s nice enough, certainly doesn’t clash, but it didn’t make me say, “Wow, she looks awesome in Pantone’s Color of the Year!”

    Love the necklace, though.

The killer for me is how poorly fitted the dress is. I can’t endorse that. I know the clothes are borrowed, but shouldn’t the designers want their clothes shown off to their best effect–which means making them fit properly?
