IN or OUT: Freida Pinto in Ralph Lauren

Posted on December 10, 2012

We’re trying very hard to like this:

Freida Pinto attends the ‘Life of PI’ Opening Gala during day one of the 9th Annual Dubai International Film Festival in a Ralph Lauren dress paired with a Ferragamo clutch and Charlotte Olympia sandals.

After all, it’s Freida Pinto in a gold metallic gown. Sounds good on paper, right? Except we don’t think we’re all that thrilled with the way it looks all wrinkled. And we definitely don’t like that  bejeweled snake at the collar, although if there’s any gal who can work a gold gown with a bejeweled snake collar (aside from Cleopatra), it’s Miss Freida. The face is as gorgeous as always, but the hair looks awfully casual, considering she’s, y’know, in a gold gown with a bejeweled snake collar. You’d think such a look would require more polished hair.

On the other hand, she cuts such a damn figure in this that we’re finding it difficult to definitively call it an OUT.

You do it.

IN! Queen of the Nile realness!

OUT! Gaudy and sloppy!

Most of the kittens took Lorenzo’s side in the argument about Jessica Biel’s Versace gown, voting it OUT.

  • IN. She looks gorgeous, even with the wrinkley skirt. Full stop.

    •  What she said.  Totally IN.

    • JosephLamour

Doesn’t this look like the dress Ivy was trying to make?

    • phrenk

      Ditto.  IN.

    • demondoll

      Yes, in. She’s lovely.

    •  ditto ditto  IN

    • Verascity

  • Dammit, just fix your hair, Freida.  I shouldn’t feel so conflicted so early in the morning. But, IN.

    • lesmaha

I completely agree with you. IN, but she made it more difficult than it needed to be.

  • Sobaika

    A resounding IN!

I would prefer better hair and shoes, some tiny studs or a bracelet to accent the collar, but this is very much an In.

    • ecallaw1977

I have to give her a little “in”.  She still looks gorgeous, but I could
never give a resounding “in” to someone wearing gold lame in a
      non-ironic way.

      • Sobaika

Hehe. For me that is the only way to wear it 🙂

      • Imasewsure

Yes there’s something very Liberace about gold lame so it does help if you have a touch of camp when you wear it.

        • Kristin McNamara

The weird bunching reminds me a little too much of Ivy’s creation on last week’s Project Runway for my liking….

  • In! (as she unobtrusively runs a steamer over the skirt)

  • L.

IN!  More done hair would look laquered and aging, love the color of the wee dark bag.

  • Kate4queen

IN, it looks like crinkly gold paper from around a chocolate bar. 🙂

  • I had to flip a coin. IN. My problem is whatever the gown’s material is because it on the line of “cheap as a $2 hooker”. In fact, it looks like that fancy gold tissue paper you find in gift bags.

  • Miss_Led

It does seem intentionally wrinkly. I love the flattering fit and the way her skin is so gorgeous. IN.

  • Lizzyisi

In! I don’t have a coherent argument, but I love tissue lamé deployed in a simple gown when the color suits the wearer. She’s letting the neck snake stand on its own, without overdoing the other jewelry, and I love her bag.

  • l_c_ann

because the wrinkly overwhelms the good parts

  • StellaZafella

FP is beautiful…the look, on the whole, seems kind of tortured. out…just a little out.

    • Introspective

tortured is the word i was looking for!! that fabric to me is hiddy. intentional or not, the wrinkles cheapen.

she’s gorgeous but between the yoga hair, the old lady snake action at her neck (its giving me all kinds of liz taylor circa 1988 – not great for someone who isnt 30), and that fabric, Im just not in love.

      out girl. sorry.

      • mellorcr

Agreed!  They make similar fabrics that have a more fluid drape and don’t wrinkle so much.  That is what this gown should have been made from.  Fabric such as they used here works better in a structured gown that does not have this kind of draping.

  • Kayceed

In. She has such a nonchalant way of wearing formal gowns, so at-ease.

  • In. The hair is a mistake, but she looks stunning anyway.

  • FrayedMachine

I want to like this. I really do. She’s absolutely gorgeous but that dress just LOOKS like a bunch of crinkle sounds. Just a little bit of out on this one as much as it pains for me to say.

  • mjude

IN.  what kind of fabric is it?

    •  It looks to me like its for realsies lame’, meaning that it is woven in part with metal threads.  It is that fact that makes it so preternaturally wrinkly.  It takes a helluva lot to iron it totally flat once its been crushed.

      • mjude

        thanks!  🙂

  • SewingSiren

You wear lamé it gets wrinkled, it’s the nature of the beast. IN. Queen of the Nile realness. But the right side of her hair seems to have come un-done.

  • I feel like the hair gives it a goddess vibe. IN!

  • I’m SO CLOSE to loving this. SO CLOSE. But man, that wrinkle is obnoxious (and also not the designer’s fault). I’m going with an OUT, simply because an A-lister should be able to nail the execution.

  • rissa42210

Out.  I want to like it, but she looks like a poorly wrapped present.

  • I would have wanted her to do a stronger lip color, and a sleeker, more polished looking hair style, but otherwise, IN!

  • nicole seligman

it looks like someone wrapped her in leftover gold christmas paper, and yet — IN.

  • SophieCollier

Hmmm… in or out.  I agree that this SHOULD have been a knockout look, but I agree on the points you mentioned which kind of make it flop.  Still, I am going to give it an IN, because this would elicit a headturn and a “wow” stare from anyone, nitpicks aside.

  • Trisha26

Out. I don’t know if I’d call it gaudy, it actually looks sophisticated (for a gold gown with a snake collar) but sloppy, yes.

  • Maluca

    In. That’s that!

  • allj

IN. I kind of want to hate this look (bejeweled snake collar) but I just can’t. She looks gorgeous.

  • ThatPeterG

    It’s IN

  • LadyCelia

    In, so very, very in.

  • Tatiana Luján

The only thing I like about this look, aside from her gorgeous face, is the snake. The dress is ugly and the fabric looks cheap.

  • I like it and in spite of the crazy hair, I’m voting it IN

  • IN. I love the gown. I love the fabric and the collar. I agree that her hair is a tad, um, messy? But I am glad she went with soft and up instead of down or up and sleek. She looks beautiful.

  • IN

  • Definite IN

  • i like the snake a lot, but the rest of it has got to go somewhere. She’s gorgeous, but her bronze-y makeup clashes with the gold dress- completely wrong tone. And that particular tone of gold when she has a yellowish undertone to her skin, makes her look super washed…OUT.

  • Joyce VG

    IN!! Beautiful.

  • Patricia Gillett

IN. She worked it enough to push it over the line for me.

  • It’s not BAD, but it’s not GREAT either. It’s a really tepid in from me.

  • Judy_J

I’m not a fan of one-shouldered gowns, but it is exactly the snake wrapped around her neck that makes me like this gown.  I am giving the benefit of the doubt on the wrinkled fabric, and assuming that it is supposed to be wrinked.  The only thing I don’t like is her hair.  IN.

  • I  N   …..

  • In, but I don’t love the hair.  It looks like she forgot to do it at all.

    • kimmeister

To me it looks like she did it, but then put a motorcycle helmet on.

(Still an in for me, though.)

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

  • ralish

In. I think she looks amazing

  • RebeccaKW

In.  I like it overall.  I agree, the snake thing could go and the hair could be more polished.  I also don’t like the platform shoe.  But overall, she looks great.

  • Claire Scott

looks like what Ivy attemped to create in PR last week!

  • Jangle57

The first thing I noticed was the hair and what a mess it is – almost looks like she has bobby pins in the front there.  I’m also assuming the fabric is supposed to be wrinkled.  I’m torn: in the first shot it looks fine, in the last shot it doesn’t.  I will give her the benefit of the doubt with a very lukewarm IN

  • SapphoPoet

OUT. She looks like a wrinkled Christmas present. Find a tree and stick her under it!

  • stagmania

    OUT. The material looks cheap.

  • bellafigura1

She and Morena Baccarin (whom I privately think of as Macarena, I can’t help it) should sign up to do a sisters project.

    • Rand Ortega

Hahahaha! I (secretly) call her Mascara Baccardi.

  • marilyn

In.  I choose to view the wrinkles as ruching.  She is put together, and very dramatic.  Who cares if there are a few wrinkles?

  • MilaXX

IN I have a feeling this looks and moves better in person. My only quibbles are the hair and the platform pumps.

  • BuffaloBarbara

IN.  I love it, even the snake thing.  She looks like they poured gold over her, and the wrinkles are just the natural flow of the stuff.

  • IN

  • nannypoo

  • lilly goren

The clutch is just the right tone. The dress fits her in so many ways, including the way the gold looks on her and with her coloring and hair. IN.

  • Tracy_Flick

IN. Love the snake. The hair is terrible, but I’ll overlook it because she looks so happy.

  • Jess5628

Though the platform gold sandal peeking out in the last picture gives me doubts, I vote IN. Lovely despite the wrinkles.

  • Imasewsure

I say way IN but you have to imagine her going down an opulent staircase rather than standing against an ugly, plain background

  • B_C_J

I really like the dress and I especially like the jewelled collar. It reminds me of the Cartier alligator  necklace that was made for Maria Felix. The gold color is beautiful on her.  The hair could use a little improvement but otherwise this is an IN.

  • oatmealpie

Out. That jeweled snake is more Evan Lysacek than Cleopatra.

  • filmcricket

Agreed on the hair and the collar. I quite like the wrinkly fabric, since it looks deliberate and not just “I was stuck in the limo for too long.” But as you say, it’s Freida Pinto in a gold gown, so: In.

  • mmc

She’s IN. The dress is OUT. I hate snakes.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT. Tissue Lamé turns into crumpled Kleenex at the slightest provocation. To give her a little bit of a break, though, Ralph Lauren should have known this and should have underlined it with a chiffon or soft organza.

  • MzzPants

    Mmm…not feelin’ it.  Out.

  • AuntJentie

  • MRC210

I think the fabric is supposed to look wrinkled but I still dislike it because it’s so half-way there.  If it’s supposed to be wrinkled, it should be really wrinkled.   Hate the wispy flyaway hair and the sandals.  Love the bag, and she is beautiful as always, but OUT.

  • Aly Light

  • barbarienne

That lighter lame always wrinkles. It kills me. And her hair looks like she just woke up and pulled a comb through it without a mirror.

But I still love the look. Those flaws bring it down, but not out. I give her a solid IN.

  • I love it, even the hair. IN IN IN IN IN.

  • jw_ny

all good except for her shoes.

  • RocknRollmom

I don’t like shiny gold or lame or bejeweled snakes or haphazard hair.  Saying all that, she is an IN.  Nobody else, but her though with those items on.  And of course I love the Ferragamo clutch–it is probably more than my rent payment which is not cheap living in a major metro area with absurd housing prices even after the recent debacles.

  • MarissaLG

The fabric isn’t great, but other than that it’s a beautiful gown. IN!

  • TheLaurenJean

In. Can you really call that gorgeousness Out? The fashion gods will strike you down.

  • So very IN. I adore the wrinkly effect here, which makes this fabric look like gold rice paper: genius!

  • Annabelle Archer

Out. The material looks cheap cheap cheap and that messy hair is not helping pull any of it back to polished.

  • Sara__B

The gown seems made from the gold foil left on a diner’s plate after eating a restaurant baked potato, the shoes have a clunky platform, and her hair is just wrong. The lovely lady got this one wrong. OUT.

  • Queen of the Nile realness! IN!

  • OrigamiRose

    Gorgeous, stunning, a total IN.

  • poggi

She’s so beautiful, but this looks sloppy on her.  Out.

  • Jessi03

In.  The wrinkles give me pause, but I love how she looks on the whole.

  • In. ruched bodice is a part of the design, the winkles are not caused by the cutting or tailoring, but the nature of this stiff Metallic fabric, the dress fits her, she look great — happy holidays to her (not crazy about her purse, though)

  • kcarb1025

  • thecitysleeps

I’m gonna go with OUT just because I like Freida and she deserves better than this obviousness.

  • crash1212

IN. She looks beautiful. I actually like the ‘wrinkled’ effect of the fabric. It brings interest. I must confess, it’s not a look I would normally be drawn to, but she’s totally rockin’ it.

  • God I love it. Hair, makeup, accessories, everything is perfect. IN.

  • Qitkat

Because that much gold only belongs on an Oscar.

  • ghopping

I’m pretty sure that’s the toga I wore to a dorm party last semester. loll

  • Carly Warnock

out. reminds me of a decorative christmas pillow.

  • gabbilevy

This is close, but I think I have to go with OUT. The gown in a different fabric, non-ugly-platform sandals, sleeker hairstyle, this would have been a resounding in. You disappoint me, Miz Pinto.

  • twocee

In.  Gorgeous and I think the snake collar gives it just enough kick.

  • miagain

in in in… she looks lovely… I think any wrinkles were probably caused in transportation…

  • Janet B

I don’t think I like the dress on her and I know I don’t like her hair.

Ms. Pinto is gorgeous, but that has nothing to do with what’s she’s wearing.  OUT

  • IN – all in all, she’s pulling it off.

  • librarygrrl64

    IN!!! Beautiful on her.

  • IN. Although the dress looks like wrapping paper and the snake is kind of freaking me out. She looks gorgeous, however, so who am I to judge the weirdness of a wrinkled dress featuring a jeweled snake wrapped around her neck? I bow down. So would Caesar.

  • Sorry, favorite Uncles, I cannot help you with this one, I vote IN.  (Despite the fact that I agree about the hair.)  Also, love the Cleopatra comment.  Maybe LiLo should wear this when she starts touring in “Liz & Dick, the sequel”.

  • alyce1213

In.  I’m not in love with the dress entirely, it has some problems, but she standing so beautifully in it — overall, very very nice.

  • sleepycat

I actually like it a lot. IN, although I will quibble about the hair too.

  • PeggyOC

Wine bag.  Can’t really give it an out, but it’s not filling me with the joy that the contents of a wine bag should.

  • she’s so very beautiful.

  • throwaneyeonthis

Much to my surprise, I’m calling it an OUT.  The color just doesn’t look that good next to her skin.  Just think how beautiful the shimmering gold would look on Shelly O and you will understand my point.  Plus the top of the dress reminds me of an over designed Judith Leiber clutch.

  • Snailstsichr

There are parts that can be picked apart, but the overall is so pretty, I give it an IN.

  • Claudia Fernandes

out. Also immeditly thought about cleopatra at first glance, but in a costume way…

  • Nimble27

In with just a few points off for the mussed hair.

  • CeeQ

IN. Love the make-up, don’t love the hair. Yes, it is a LOT of gold metallic but she’s pulling it off because the only other thing on that dress is the snake around her neck. So it actually all works out together! Shoes are awful though.

  • kirkyo

Did someone else’s dress explode before Miss Pinto got there?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

OUT! Was it windy? Her awful, messy hair is distracting from her gorgeous face and great figure in that dress. No excuse.

  • Cathy S

She’s in. I don’t even care that it’s wrinkly. She looks fabulous.

  • TieDye64

The wrinkles and snake collar kill it for me. OUT.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. It doesn’t fit her right but she has got the Egyptian goddess look down stone cold.

  • She is so beautiful that the gown is just happy to crinkle up around her.  In.

  • Ann

In… loving the snake collar! Seriously… it makes the outfit. I’m willing to overlook the wrinkles. The shoes need to go though.

  • teensmom99

  • slightlybitterkitten

In.  She’s a snake charmer wearing gold leaf.

  • In – I like it more than I dislike it. Isn’t THAT a resounding defense?

  • Call me Bee

I like this a lot!  The dress is killer–even in that crinkly lame-looking fabric (not layme, but lah-may.)  The accessories are perfect (so want that awesome clutch…)  Her make-up is cute, and I don’t mind the hair at all.  If it were neater and all reined in, I think she’d look to precious.  I’m not crazy about the shoes, but she’s an IN.

  • cleverlady

This is the dress Ivy wishes she made last week for Project Runway All Stars!

  • IN!

  • Dot

I actually like the bejeweled snake! But when you scroll down to see the rest of the dress, it is rather disappointing. The bottom half of the gown is sad and wrinkly.

  • kategs

Ohhhhhh it’s an IN for me.  She looks marvelous.  I like the snake necklace, adds oddly enough what I think of as whimsey!

  • IN!!

  • julnyes

My quibbles are minor – IN.

  • Totally IN.  Could use some small tasteful earrings, though. Messy hair too.  Still gorgeous.

  • IN!!! I love it!

  • ankali

Out. If the lamé were weightier & thus less wrinkled, this would work like gangbusters for me. As it is, though, it looks cheap.

  • Donna Schmidt

  • jmorino08

Out! Looks cheap and wrinkly. Ralph and Freida can both do better!

  • guest2visits

I’m not against a jeweled snake or a gold metallic gown, but it looks abit messy at the neck in this instance – the wrinkley
bottom half of the dress also takes away from the lux of the look. Still, she’s so beautiful it’s ALMOST a werq for me.

  • bailey debruynkops

OUT, fabric looks cheap, and ralph lauren is overpriced as it is.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  She looks beautiful, and I like the *idea* of the dress, but…

…well, it looks like the cheap lame’ we made marching band flags out of in high school.

  • You guys must have reviewed this before you had your morning coffee.  IN!

  • neofashionista

  • trisker

IN I guess — I agree about the hair

  • Her face is FLAWLESS but I just can’t with the hair and the dress looks cheap to me. OUT.

  • Rand Ortega

God forgive me for saying this, ’cause I love me some Freida Pinto w/ a burning hot passion, but this dress reminds me of what Ivy made last week on PRAS. Tortured is the 1 word that comes to mind when I look at this.

  • IN! Love it!

  • IN. Beautiful!

  • demidaemon

I don’t know. This is eerily reminiscent of Ivy’s AUF-worthy “red-carpet” dress on the last PR-All-stars. On the other hand, she does look pretty. So, OUT, I guess, for crappy reality competition show challenge entry nostalgia.

I’m going “IN”, it fits here super well and she looks gorgeous.  I’m going to say that I’ll bet that fabric looks much richer not under the harsh glare of flash and red carpet blietzkreig lights.

  • elemspbee

She’s IN but the dress, particularly the garment, is OUT.

  • H2olovngrl

Lovely. A definite in for me.

  • Anathema_Device

In. It isn’t perfect, for all the reasons you cite, but she looks so beautiful.

  • LambeeBaby

Out. I hate the color. It is washing her out. In another color its an IN.

  • Contralto

IN.  Can’t find a thing wrong here.

  • OUT: It reminds me of the dress Ivy sent in the last challenge of PRAllStars. Not cute, very sloppy.

  • warnerave

  • Lilithcat

    Love the snake collar.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

IN. Except that she needs big, gold earrings and a matching snake arm cuff. And more eye-shadow. I just can’t say no to a sparkly snake halter.

  • girliecue

IN. It’s goddesswear on a, well, goddess. Although her hair could use some goddessing-up.

  • Her hair is a bit unkempt, but this is wayyy closer to a WERQ than Alicia Keyes’ dress, so on this day it is an IN.

  • bertkeeter

The gold is too pale…and c’mon Ralphiepoo…start designing something that looks fresh. Not like it was shipped the thousands in a container ship from China!

  • briecee

Somebody needs to buy her minions an iron or something.  But I can’t bring myself to give this anything but an IN.

  • watchmeboogie

It’s certainly a testament to her incredible beauty, that even with this turd of a hairdo and a wrinkly dress, she just makes it work.

  • Vickiefantastico

IN. She looks stunning. And I love the snake necklace. I wish I could rock something like that.

  • OMG, IN!

  • Louise Bryan

It has that tissue look, though I’m not sure that’s the fabric used.  I like this very much, so I give her an IN.

  • altalinda

  • IN. She looks amazing.

  • pookiesmom

    Gosh, she’s gorgeous. IN.

  • formerlyAnon

In. She pulls it off despite flaws.

  • DCSheehan

In. That snake thing clinched it got me, it’s crazy and I love it.

  • Love the dress, hate the hair. Too close to call.

  • ccm800

Out. I know I’m supposed to be enamored of her…I rarely am and this is no exception.

  • decormaven

Dress in, hair out. Luxe look with messy hair- a disconnect for me.

  • It’s an IN for me. She looks great and while it isn’t a perfect look (something is just off and I can’t put my finger on what), it’s good enough for me.

  • IN.

  • samitee

    Y’all are crazy. IN.

  • IN!  (hopefully I’m not too late…you guys are so prolific, occasionally I miss one!!!)  And extra snaps for not wearing those awful putty-colored shoes!!!

  • IN!

  • allcapsERINN

LOVE THE SNAKE! IN! (I feel the need to shout it today.)

  • littlemac8

Can I just say how much I love that Ferragamo clutch?!  OUT for me the dress looks poorly made and fitted!
