IN or OUT: Beyonce in Torn by Ronny Kobo

Posted on December 13, 2012

Kittens, what do we all think of this look for Bey?

Beyonce attends Solange Knowle‘s concert kick-off at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City in a Torn dress.

Torn Mammie Printed Knit Dress

The print is fantastic and the colors look really great on her. But it’s just a leeeeetle too tight, wouldn’t you say? Sure, she’s got the bod for a super-tight little dress, but when the print is spreading out like a comic strip on Silly Putty, the effect is less sexy and more, “Girl, you really need to go up a size.” And lest anyone think we’re selective in our outrage, our dislike of shoes that match the skin tone extends to women of color as well. Yes, we get that it gives the illusion that the leg is longer, but we’d rather see a gal go for style and color rather than fooling the eye as to their bodily proportions.  A pair of pumps that picked up on the reds or blues in that dress would have looked so much more stylish to us.

And while we’re bitching, we might as well say that we hate the two-tone hair. Wow! We were really negative on this one! It’s just that we think she took a great dress and made a bunch of decisions that make it look less-than-great. Go ahead. Tell us how we’re wrong.

Vote Now!

IN! You are WRONG, T Lo, and I’m about to tell you why!

OUT! You are RIGHT, T Lo! And that is all that need be said!

Amanda Seyfried’s uber-dramatic McQueen gown made up for her too-dramatic eye makeup, winning the hearts of the Bitter Kittens and getting a vote of IN.

Yeah, it doesn’t fit. The tell-tale sign that a dress is too short is if the hem along the front bows upward. She’s got more bust than this dress can handle.

    • Kirsten Kirsten

I agree -the pulling up of the hem and the massive monoboob effect are not flattering. OUT

  • Size up, maybe 2 times. Get rid of the bangs. Pick a shoe from one of those fun colors in the dress. … Edit: I commented before I read but happy to see I got it mostly right!

  • naivevan

It’s an OUT, but only because she is clearly uncomfortable. She looks like she thinks it’s too short. It almost looks like she’s about to tug the shirt down a bit. She looks lovely, but discomfort makes a dress look terrible.

    • Vickiefantastico

I completely agree! If you look uncomfortable, it’ll never be an IN to me. So OUT.

  • j_anson

OUT. I can’t even focus on the dress over how terrible that hair looks.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

    • frederieke

Those are the worst bangs I can remember seeing in my life.

  • jennifromcali

You are absolutely right, but her body is so slamming, IN!

  • It’s hiking up in the front and squashing her boobs. It’s like melting wallpaper print. The sign behind her says she was seeing Solange at the Bowery. One wonders what lil’ sis was wearing.

  • It’s too small AND too short, and you’re right–the two-tone hair is atrocious. OUT.

  • It’s way too tight! It’s so tight the hemline isn’t even straight in the front.

  • Qitkat

OUT. That dress is fricking ugly, although somehow I like it on the model. Hmmm…

  • MsOlympia

    Girl, that’s not your eyeliner.

    • Mismarker

Also, girl, those are not your bangs.

      • Girl, go back to your natural hair color.

    • H3ff

Girl, that is not your FACE. Crazy face.

    • Indigo54

THANK YOU!  That eyeliner is an inch thick.  Totally wrong!

  • That neckline is not a friend to the busty lady. Plus it makes this look like pajamas.

  • Yup, you guys are right again. Out, ms Beyonce. Lately your sister is workin it much more consistently than you.

  • clatie

It is HORRENDOUS.  The print looks like a bad beach towel from 1974 Palm Springs.  It is too tight and too short.  She is gorgeous and should beat the crap out of whoever told her to wear that.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

You nailed it – that print.  On the towels in my mother in law’s guest bathroom, down the hall from the faux bronze bust of Ceasar.

  • kimmeister

Out, for stealing Jessica Biel’s bangs and bleaching them, and for the wrong size giving her uniboob.  I like the print, but it just doesn’t seem to fit Beyonce’s aesthetic.

    • RebeccaKW

I like the print, too, and wish she had upped a size.  When your curves distort the print, that’s a good sign it’s not your size.

  • AuntJentie

  • hmariec19

OUT. She is desperately trying to hold the dress down without looking like she’s desperately trying to hold the dress down.  The bangs are awful, and something is bugging me about her eye makeup that I can’t quite put my finger on.

    • AthenaJ

It seems like the makeup is giving her ‘crazy eyes’.

      • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, she totally has the crazy eyes which match the bat shit crazy bangs…total agreement on the dress, Bey, that’s not your size.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

OUT to the Nth.  The hair – esp. the bangs are the biggest sin.  It’s a lot of print for such a tight, short dress.  It’s like the kind of print I’d expect on a henley worn under a sweater or something.. maybe if she pulled a hip leather jacket over this?  And totes agree she needed a stronger shoe.

  • IN. but whats up above the neck? is the the hair-cut/hair-colour/make-up? or is she just giving weird face?

  • charlotte

OUT. For the reasons you stated. I mean, nude shoes? Come on.
    And the clutch is tacky.

  • StellaZafella

I might expect this form Mariah Carey…not Bey.

  • l_c_ann

    Out. (except for her smile)

  • Sara__B

She’s keeping her hand plastered on her thigh. She knows the dress is too tight. OUT.

  • crash1212

OUT. For all the reasons stated. I’m not that crazy about the dress on the model either.

  • AlexisPayne

I’m surprised this wasn’t a “Girl that’s not your dress” OUT.

  • gabbilevy

Out, which is too bad, because I like this on paper. Hating this particular hairstyle on her though.

  • Out. The eye makeup, btw, is a crime against nature.

  • Judy P

Out.  It’s a great dress for someone with no curves (Krysten Ritter would look amazeballs in that dress). Bey’s got a slammin bod and can rock a tight dress, but curves are going to mess up that pattern even in the right size (which the one she’s wearing is not). And the bangs are just NO.

  • Jecca2244

I feel like you can tell a lady is uncomfortable when they touch the hem of the dress…like “oh crap.”

    •  That’s why I wear maxi-dresses (when I wear dresses). If I’m touching the hem, there’s something seriously wrong with me. Or I’m drunk.

  • Out. Her fringe is so upsetting the way it is plastered down there – she looks so much prettier with her hair off her forehead. The dress… I just don’t love this sort of neckline for the boobular woman. I think it needs to be a V or more of a scoop to avoid pillow-boob. You can also tell that she knows it is too small because she’s clutching the side to hold it down. The print is good on her and I like the clutch, although I really don’t think you need a leopard clutch with such a busy dress.

    • Amen!  Love the print, hate the accessories.  OUT

  • ChicaDificil

Agree with everything plus I cannot stand her bangs, they start way too far back on her head and are not flattering at all, you are better than this Beyonce! She needs to hire her sister as her stylist stat.

  • librarygrrl64

Oh, no. OUT!!!!! You could not be more right about everything here. Yikes.

    • curiouserandcuriousest

I kept repeating ‘oh, no!’ as I scrolled down. Those bangs alone make an OUT. And I disagree on the idea that the colours are working for her, but I think it’s because they’re picking up the dirty blonde of her fringe.

  • Sarah Thomas

It’s an awfully expensive outfit to be looking that cheap.

  • altalinda

Out.  The shoes clash with the dress (plus, I dislike the color), and so does the purse.  Plus everything that you said.

  • Dot

She has a banging body, but she can do better. This dress is so cheap looking. The hair is just…Jesus, it’s ridiculous. Those blunt bangs do nothing for her at all.

  • Out. But points for serving up some serious crazy eyes.

  • MarissaLG

Yes it’s tight, but those Spanx are doing work. IN.

  • Out!  Too tight, too short.  She’s been busy with the baby and can’t get to the hair salon…

  • TaurusKW

You’re completely correct.  I hate the shoes, and I hate the hair, but I like the dress on her.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

In. That pattern is really compelling despite the fit issues.

  • another_laura

Out.  Don’t wear a stretch print if you’re stretching the print.  And it should either be lined or worn with a slip – looks like it’s riding up on her thighs.

  • Judy_J

You are absolutely right, TLo!  The print is spreading across her abdomen like melting ice cream.  If she’d gone one size up, this dress would have been perfect for her.  And I really hate those shoes.  OUT.

  • hughman

I think her picking a dress with a “Mammie” print is the most puzzling part.

  • Jessi03

  • Monday1900

    Tackalicious!  So very out!

  • bookish

Plus the eye makeup is making her look permanently surprised and it’s weird.

  • luciaphile

Out, but this is not terrible. It needs to be a size larger. I’m okay with the shoes mainly because so much is going on with the print. Bag should be a solid color though.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. Agree with everything. Stretched Silly putty & comics, snort. With silly putty pumps, no less!

  • J. Preposterice

I think a size up, and this would’ve looked fab.  I have boobs out to HERE and I’ve learned that if I want to wear a print (or a cabled sweater), I need to go up a size or my boobs just distort everything way too much.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

When ugly dresses happen to pretty women.

  • Julie Fountain

Love the smile, everything else is kinda off – including the eye makeup and most especially the hair.  Love ya Bey, but it’s an OUT.

  • OUT. The hair is awful, the shoes are an abomination, and the dress is too small.

  • KayEmWhy

    Out. Too tight.

  • Scott Isaacs

Hiddy dress. Regardless of how the fit is, the print is giving me seizures. Grandma wants her mothball-infused Persian rug back.

  • Tatiana Luján

You are right. I also feel the dress is too short.

  • Tatiana Luján

Those orange bangs don’t suit her at all. She’s so beautiful, why does she diminish her looks like this.

  • ChiKat67

OUT, for all the reasons TLo discussed above.

  • Introspective

this out is so obvious it does not need discussion.

  • That dress is for a toothpick not a shapely woman such as herself.

  • marilyn

Out.  Dress too tight, shoes do nothing for it, even if hair was not two-tone, it is styled badly for her.  Bangs are not her friend.

  • CeeQ

Hate the two-toned hair. I love the dress but it’s not too tight but a tad too short. Or is it because it is too tight that it’s riding up? Also: hate the shoes.

  • EEKstl

OUT! You are RIGHT, TLo!  And that is all that need be said!

  • Darva Sutra

Out, head to toe.  Love her, but everything is off today.  Sell that tacky, cheap looking dress on B-bay (hahahahaha) Solange is smiling…

  • unbornfawn

  • Whoa. She looks manic.

  • Janet B

I miss Silly Putty and inky comics.

  • teensmom99

OUT–At first even with such a loud dress, all I could notice was the hair.
And uniboob in a pattern and weird stuff at the hem means go up a size.
Don’t know why I even bother since TLo nailed it.

  • It’s like she could have done ANY color shoe! I had no idea she was so busty.

  • Out. Dress is kind of hiddy, no? The part near her bust kind of looks like a face. The hair is also hiddy. Sorry, Bey.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    TLO nailed it. OUT.

  • Out out out.  Awful.

  • OUT. Hate the bangs. Hate the shoes.

  • Out, everything about this could be improved.

  • Mazenderan

Out.  I could tolerate the dress were it a little longer – but it’s much too short.  Her fringe is awful.

  • leave_Blake_alone

OUT. The hair alone makes this tragic.

  • Snailstsichr

The dress I can take, but the hair moves it to out territory. Teal pumps would have been sublime.

  • PrunellaV

    What is with that HAIR!

  • somebody blonde

God, those bangs. Everything else was forgivable, but the BANGS. Out!

  • getouttadodge

It looks like Grandma’s couch grew legs. OUT.

  • jilly_d

OUT.  Love the dress and earrings, but I can’t with the shoes and the booms.

  • I like the leg-lengthening shoes… ON WOMEN WHO NEED THEIR LEGS LENGTHENED FOR PROPORTIONS’ SAKE!  Most of the women we see in them don’t need to lenthen their legs at all, because they’re already in proportion or longer through the leg to begin with.  Not everyone needs longer legs.

  • Her make up makes her look a bit crazy, I think… lunatic eyes…

  • OUT. As a curvy woman myself, I’m well aware that if you’re gonna wear anything tight you have to go up a size or you ruin the proportions of the dress, as Miss Bey here is doing. I also hate the two tone hair and the bangs of Satan.

  • She looks like a Barbie doll.

  • ojosazules

  • Out!  Way too small.

  • IN. You’re wrong because it’s Beyonce and she’s perfect.

  • jmorino08

Not a good look all around!

  • rumcg66

OUT. For all the reasons you mentioned. I particularly hate the shoes.

  • Chantelle James

I kind of like the print and I actually almost bought this particular dress. However, I decided against buying it because I’m curvy with hips and I figured that the print would stretch out and the skirt would ride up like it does on Bey. Seeing her in it, I’m happy that I didn’t buy it for me.
Oh, and the dress, the hair, the makeup, and the shoes are all OUT.

    • mmc2315

Now we need you to go to the store and try the dress on and see if going up a size fixes the problem.  😉

I love the print, but I think I’d need full Spanx, and hose.  Gah. Forget it.  lol

  • Lily-Rygh

Dress is way too tight, shoes are boring, two-tone hair is hiddy, and the bangs look like straw.  Such a shame on such a beautiful woman.  Clear OUT.

  • shanteUstay

Her perchant for blonde weave/wigs has always been my biggest gripe with her. She looks gorgeous as brunette. Bey….the hair has to go darling

  • Joyce VG

IN! She’s a Brickhouse and this is what happens. Her hair is in Shetland Pony territory and the shoes are so boring – but she looks so happy and the print is great on her.

  • OUT!  Bad hair.  Bad dress – it makes the model look like she has large breasts.  Ugly dress.  Dress too short/tight.  Ugly shoes.  Shiny face.  Ugly clutch.

That being said, I think the dress would look better with shorter sleeves or sleeveless.

  • pdquick

And despite all that, slammingly curvalicious. She’s carrying that mommy weight very well. IN, but just by a slight sashay.

  • I declared this an OUT based on the hair/makeup in the thumbnail alone. Too bad, I like the dress, but she does need to go up a size.

  • Jangle57

Ditto everything you dislike about this – OUT

  • Out. It’s giving her a shelf butt and making her look way out of proportion. And those bangs. Holy god, who told her that was a good idea??

  • alyce1213

Hate the dress and the greasy legs.

  • Louise Bryan

I’m so used to her looking so magnificent that this is a tragedy.  Is she trying to undershine her sis?  OUT

    • nancylee61

I have seen pictures of her at some basketball games, and Lord!! She doesn’t even look like herself!! Either she is really lacking sleep because of her baby, or she is a woman who looks totally different without make-up. Even my husband, who is a HUGE Beyonce fan, said, “Ugh. Not pretty.” Which is so weird, because she seems to have fabulous features.

  • TieDye64

OUT for all the reasons you stated.

  • ankali

OUT for hair and too-tightness of the dress.

  • kikisayshi

Well, since you put it that way . . . I do like the dress and it is more than a size too small. I hate the shoes, and I feel like she could use some skin on the neckline if the dress wasn’t so short. But for some reason all of the elements are working together here, so with the morethanskintight issue aside, she is IN with me.

  • SewingSiren

Needs to go up a size is an understatement .

  • nannypoo

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look worse. I hate the print, it doesn’t fit, it’s just bad all around. And those bangs are absurd.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  The pattern is pulling, and the hem is doing the wave, drawn up by her ‘assets’.  It’s the kind of dress that makes me wonder if she has no friends…no one who would honestly tell her how bad this is.

And the hair is just awful.

  • OUT

    • kscherer82

In.  Was at the Solange show that night and saw her bouncing around in the outfit on the balcony… it was the perfect dress for the occasion.  It doesn’t look as good in the picture though.

  • Out. The print goes all smeary like when you watch a 4:3 show zoomed out to 16:9.

  • lizajane1776

OUT! The dress is too small. The hair is two toned and ugly. The eyes! Crazy eyes and crazy eye makeup!
    Did I mention OUT?

  • bertkeeter

    Hooka Kootur!

  • BrooklynBomber

OUT! You are RIGHT, T Lo! And that is all that need be said!

  • lrhoff

    Not impressive.

  • formerlyAnon

You’re right on all counts, and yet . . . these youngsters, they do wear everything too tight, and it is a great print for her . . . and that hair is, well it’s one of “her things” . . . and, well, the shoes are so ubiquitous, can they doom her to an out? Are these sins enough?

Well, yes, I think they are, and I will call this out. But I’m feeling a tad judgemental about it.

  • RzYoung

OUT. I could live with the dress but the hair is appalling. Bey, ditch the blonde ffs!

  • The hair and makeup is going way drag – it’s dragging the look down. And then boring shoes. I wish she’d done draggy shoes and lower key makeup/hair.
Those BOOMS are not Bey’s look.

  • Vaniljekjeks

  • trisker

OUT from me 2.  Reasons below.

  • My kingdom for a rich, teal, suede pump.

  • OUT! Definitely a size up, maybe 2. This could have been really chic, except it looks like she spent most of the evening making sure her dress didn’t ride up.

  • lehen

    those booms are awful

  • Miranda Neville

I don’t see the appeal of the dress at all. It looks like a cheap sofa. The whole look is a disaster. OUT

  • Jessica O’Connell

You are, of course, extremely right. A lot of bad choices here. OUT.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

  • bitterk

I absolutely love this dress but I agree, I don’t love it on her.  Maybe with different shoes and hair it could work…better.

  • iCouture

WAIT….where is Beyonce!??!    My eyes are just drawn to sexy handler……yummmmz…

Ah, now I see some girl with a sausage casing as a dress, and terrible bangs.  OUT to her.

  • It also seems like she’s uncomfortable with the length, because she’s holding into that hem for dear life.

If this were on a lesser starlet, I’d say in, but I KNOW Miss Bey can do so much better

  • Ann

OUT. Dress doesn’t work on her at all, and the shoes are awful.

  • Ugh. Those bangs. You’re right, TLo. We never doubted.

  • mmc2315

Ack, tough one.  Yes about the hair, yes about needing to go up a size, yes about the shoes….and yet?  IN.  She doesn’t look unattractive, not by a long shot.

I love, love, love the print, and it works with her curves.

    • JimMcC

Agree! Somehow she still stays on the side of IN in spite of it being a bit too small, the hair being a bit unflattering, and the shoes defining drab. It’s just such a great dress, looks fun and casual and appropriate for the event, and…that woman’s smile just seals the deal for me.

  • decormaven

Grief! You just got a suitcase full of cash from Pepsi. You need to sail in on a look that speaks to your status, not this too-tight, too-short outfit with hiddy pumps. Bey has gorgeous features, but all I can see are those bangs. Sadly, out.

  • stagmania

OUT. Definitely a size too small, and it looks like she knows it.

  • Larkin21

Agree with TLo’s assessment, and add a dislike of the neckline. Just doesn’t look flattering on her, which I can relate to. Want to like it but, sadly, OUT.

  • Cathy S

She’s out. It’s a really cute dress but it’s way too small. She’s going to bust out of that.

  • Imasewsure

The hair is awful. The dress would have been saved by pairing it with some kick-ass shoes (and either more width or a little bit more length). I’d say a very weak IN

  • Agreed, but what’s bothering me most is the makeup, which is giving her a bad case of crazy-eye.

  • TSkot

Too tight and hate the hair: OUT

  • tereliz

I love this dress, but maybe she’s sporting the two-tone bangs so we won’t notice how tight it is…

  • She does not have a real sense of style to say the least, am never impressed by much of anything she wears, I sure hope she isn’t paying a stylist to dress her.

  • neofashionista

OUT it is just too busy and too tight to be attractive on her
GIRL that is NOT your dress send it to Christina Aguilera who likes wearing things that are tight and cheap

  • Quote: OUT! You are RIGHT, T Lo! And that is all that need be said!

  • DCSheehan

In. Love the dress and even the hair can’t sink it. Yep it’s too tight and too short but girl has got serious sexy going on.

  • julnyes

If the dress was a V-Neck, two sizes larger and if her hair was one color this would be an IN. As it is, despite the loveliness of the woman wearing it, I have to call it an OUT.

  • Agree, agree,agree.

  • I love the dress…just not on her

  • MilaXX

small OUT! It’s all the tiny detail; dress needs to go up a size, shoes are awful, and the toned hair

  • berkeleygirl

Sorry, but too often I think she looks like an expensive Vegas call girl who lucked into marrying one of her wealthiest former clients.

  • demidaemon

For one, I just don’t think this print sizes up very well. That said, she failed in the finishing. The hair and shoes are both an UGH. OUT.

  • OUT. looks like a sofa from one of the sofas in the back wing of the house…with the cloth thrown over them.

  • Pam Winters

Oh, honey, no. Even I know this is an OUT, and I’m currently wearing paint-stained yoga pants–because I’m (1) in my own home and (2) not Beyonce.

  • guest2visits

I like the dress but I think it needs to be an inch longer or a size up.  She could use ‘kickier’ shoes,  if that’s still a word.

  • Alice Tram

    soooo out . I don’t understand it .

  • aquamarine17

OUT and my first reaction was to her hair. Not a good choice, a very unfathomable choice, really. She would look so great with a size up or two as someone has said, definitely. That would add a little bit of length too, which would look good.

  • sweet_potato

It is a little too tight TLo.  She would have been better served by a dress that fits. OUT

  • I would give this an in for the print, but the hair is awful and the shoes just don’t really match the rest of the outfit. OUT.

  • ccm800

Out. Demon crab print is not doingit for me at all.

  • barbarienne

What is with the manic expression in her eyes? If it was one shot, I would say the camera caught her in a funny way. But we have three distinct photos of her face and she looks way beyond happy. Maybe it’s the painted-on uptilted corners of her eyes? Whatever the cause, it’s freaking me out a bit.

Yeah, the dress is much too small for that busy print to be pulled up down and sideways. And the two-tone hair. And the shoes. Love her smile.

Gotta give her an OUT, though.

  • pop_top

OUT b/c of the terrible hair.

  • bailey debruynkops

out, those are some offensive bangs

  • Bad bra that’s squishing her boobs down. Terrible, fried hair. Dress a bit too small. Big, crazy-nervous eyes. IN! Just because it must be so hard to be a goddess on a bad day.

  • O-U-T.
