IN or OUT: Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen

Posted on December 11, 2012

One thing’s for sure; the LesMiz ladies are definitely going for the drama with their public appearance getups.

Amanda Seyfried attends the premiere of ‘Les Misérables’ in New York in Alexander McQueen.

Striking as hell. The only reason we’re opening this up to the voting is because we’re unsure about two elements here.

  1. The eyes. Hers are so huge and dramatic on their own that we don’t think she actually needs the heavy eye makeup and we’re leaning towards the take that says it’s actually working against her natural beauty.
  2. The belt. We realize the McQueen aesthetic is often of the “too much is never enough” variety, but that bustier is already so heavy and focus-pulling that we tend to think a simple belt would have served the look better.

Otherwise, we think she looks pretty amazing. And you, darlings? What do the minions think?

Vote Now!

IN! STUNNING! I mean it! I’m stunned!

OUT! A little too draggy for my tastes. I’m a simple country girl at heart.

The Precious Unborn Fawns disagreed with our take on Freida Pinto’s Cleopatra gown, voting it IN.

the two-tone hair is pretty awful

      • Jessi03

I think she looks like a Christmas angel tree-topper.  It’s like a little halo.  :D

        • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Yeah. I like everything about this except that I can’t get past the part where she stapled someone else’s hair to the back of her head. OUT.

      • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

Hair gets lighter at the ends, particularly blonde hair. That’s what my hair tends to look like when I put it in a bun.

        • Terrie_S

I have dark blond hair, so I know it gets lighter, but her hair is not currently that long or thick. Plus, the braid is too consistent in color for normal lightening.

        • MilaXX

oh that bun is a piece aka weave

    • spooki C

I’ll give her an “in” but I don’t love it. It’s an “in” because it does not make my eyes weep like Anne Hathaway did!

      • lesmaha

        I agree completely–grading on a curve. She’s an IN.

    • Jessi03

IN.  She looks striking and gorgeous.

    • Maya Cagan

      GORGEOUS. In. So very in.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

The belt does not bother – but the eyes..totally agree.  She’s the last person who needs to “dramatize” her eyes!  Nevertheless – it’s an IN for me!

      • EveEve

The dark triangles at the corners of her eyes don’t dramatize so much as minimize.  And the dark pink shade is so wrong. Also, the stuff must be getting in her eyes because I refuse to believe she either smoked a joint or was crying before hitting the RC.

    • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

      Ewww on the eyes.  out

    • Sobaika

I like the belt, but the hair and makeup is too severe for me. It does work against her natural beauty, she is much more suited to softer presentation.

    • http://twitter.com/Alyssa_T_Robot Alyssa T. Robot

i kinda love it. definitely like this more than old hathaway’s get-up. IN.

      • Sobaika

There’s a great deal I enjoy more than whatever Anne Hathaway was trying to do.

    • BazoDee

IN. The eyes are overdone for sure but not nearly enough to question this IN-ness!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexandra-Glorioso/10025811 Alexandra Glorioso

IN! I love everything about this.

    • another_laura

In.  Kudos for a tight updo, dramatic eye makeup and tasteful accessorizing.  Minor points off for the belt which I think is sadly just a tad too much.

    • Moira MacDougal

In! I actually like the eyes, though I agree that she doesn’t really need it, somehow it fits with the dress. I have no problem with the belt, it’s fierce. I have issue with her hair…ick.

    • Anne StJean

Her skin looks shiny, her hair is just plain weird, and her eyes are hiddy. But she manages to look fantastic despite it, so I’ll say it’s an IN.

    • RocknRollmom

The hair and the eye makeup kill it.  I debated the belt.  The dress is an IN, her make up and hair is an out.

    • Cloveradams

She looks as if she’s about to snap off that skirt and dance the Black Swan.

      • karenbttc

My immediate thought: “Are they making a sequel to Black Swan?  Is she angling for the lead?”

        O-U-T
She looks better with the sweet ingenue looks than she does as a vamp.

      • charlotte

While singing “I’ve Got Bette Davis Eeeeyes”.

      • http://twitter.com/vintagesewing Vtg Fashion Library

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that.

    • sk8tfan

Love. Her eyes are so strong they can take this kind of punishment. Normally I would reject the belt but girlfriend’s working it like she hunted and skinned the beast herself. Her face is usually covered by her hair but with it up like that, it shows what a beautiful shape  her face has. Overall a striking look.

    • dschubba

Love the gown/belt; tolerate the hair; hate the makeup.

    • http://twitter.com/annalizabet Anna Elizabeth

I am so ready for this pinkeye makeup trend to die. I like the outer part of the makeup, the black cat-eye thing, but the inner color is too red-looking and it just makes her look infected.

I’m going back and forth on the belt, but I think I like it, because the color is rich and works well with the gold of the bustier and gives it a bit of an edge but not too much.

Overall, I say IN, but she should’ve gone with a different eyeliner color.

      • Kayceed

Yes, I thought it was Fantine who was supposed to be consumptive.

    • SayWTH

The dress is amazing, not sure it needed the belt – but that is McQueen for you. The hair and eyes scream “The Sound of Music meets Black Swan” to me. Not doing anything for her. So, I think I have to give her an out for the mental picture of little Gretl singing “Edelweiss” while being impaled by sharp feathers.

    • Trisha26

Out. From the waist up (sans belt) it’s very “Black Swan” for me – too much going on. From the belt down – meh.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

IN. Love it. Agree that she should have toned down the eye makeup. I also hate the Heidi hair. Otherwise, perfecto.

    • mike__tv

In. She looks great. Give her a break. LOL.

    • itsnotoveryet11

The eyes are a bit much but as a girl who is also guilty of overdoing the eyeshadow for the sake of drama I have to give it an IN

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

In, for sure. I don’t think she should do the draggy makeup all the time, but just because she’s got fabulously huge peepers doesn’t mean she shouldn’t get to glitz them up for an event as big as this one. I’d lose the belt too, though.

    • Pants_are_a_must

That eye make up is not only too much, it looks unfinished. I know it’s intentional, but it doesn’t work.

      That belt really doesn’t fit.

I’m not a simple country girl at heart, but even drag queens know how to say how. I vote “MEH”.

(PS, I went to the opera last week and in the playbill there was an ad for an all-drag queen Rockettes Christmas special, how awesome is THAT)

    • mike__tv

LOUD ROAR ” Where is my FRINGE REVIEW!!!!”

    • somebody blonde

It’s an in, but that eye makeup is downright scary.

    • EEKstl

IN for sure.  I love the juxtaposition of the tortoise shell belt with the flowery bodice so I’m all in there.  I do agree about the eye makeup: A classic “smokey eye” would have been much better.  Love the hair.

      • MissAmynae

        Agreed on all counts!

    • Janet B

      Out.

It’s all too much for her.

    • shirab

The eyes are a bit too reminiscent of Black Swan. Or maybe The Incredibles.

    • clevRcat

I’ll never go in for those big braids and the ballet dancer make-up is overkill, but I’m giving it an “in”. The dress is fabulous and she is a strikingly beautiful (and talented) young woman. I actually quite like the belt.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

In, with reservations. The braided chignon is obviously a different shade from her color, it’s pulling my focus away from her lovely face, even with the very dramatic eye make up.

    • VicksieDo

I’d have to go with an IN.  She usually melts into any background, but this whole look says LOOK AT ME NOW, DAMMIT!

    • Nicholas

It’s not WERQ material, but it seems perfect for a musical-themed movie. In other contexts, it probably wouldn’t work, but it’s great here.

    • Jillaine13

IN.  I love the total package.  A quibble here or there can’t take way the overall effect.

    • StellaZafella

IN: The belt finishes the skirt and makes the bustier act as the jewelry. I love the eyes, for this, it’s dress-up and, with the hair, I get Black Swan drama.

    • Crystal

In. A bit much, but in.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

hate the hair and the makeup may be a bit too much, but, considering the feel of the movie promotion, all drama and romance and darkness, i would vote this very, very IN.

    • AlexisPayne

      In!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=713709401 Randy Noak

Ballerina/kitten with a whip. Love it. Total IN.

    • famousamy

In. Striking and fierce. I’m glad she has dramatic eye make-up, but would prefer if it was done another way.

    • http://twitter.com/1tsplove sara

IN, she looks FABULOUS and it’s a pretty big deal so I think the occasion requires more than the typical premiere dress.  She’s a risk taker and it’s working here.

    • E. D.

OUT, but for the off-color braid.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/T7MCCHLEC6H5HHUXTDVKBD2IAY Liza E

Out.  Love the dress.  Hate the hair, hate the makeup, REALLY hate the belt.

    • MissViv

IN – but only from the neck down. That hair and makeup duo is catastrophic.

    • Qitkat

The blonde hair braid startled me, and not in a good way.
Yet, I still have to give her an IN.

    • Judy_J

I don’t like the too-dramatic eye makeup, and I don’t like this belt with this particular gown.  However, the overall look strikes me as IN.

    • Verascity

      Absolutely stunning to me. IN.

    • http://www.theseabirdmonastery.co.uk/ Ailsa

This is suuuch a close call. I don’t like the hair or the belt or how there’s so much of the skirt or how washed out she looks. But I kinda like the dress and the eye make up. I’m gonna go with IN, just because it’s not what Anne Hathaway was wearing.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In.  However, I don’t care for the belt or the Amy Winehouse eyeliner.

    • Kayceed

I like a formal updo, but the scraped back look coupled with fake-y looking hairpiece is rather ghastly. I like a dramatic cat-eye, but not in bronzey/black with her coloring, it completely washes her out. Great ideas, poorly executed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

In, I kind of like the belt, but the eye makeup is a big OUT.

    • teensmom99

IN.  I LOVE the eyes.  Not for every day or girl on the street but I have never seen her face look so beautiful.  As to belt–this needed some sort of belt, I think–almost to transition from busy top to plain bottom.  Not the best belt, but not bad so given how great all else is, this remains an IN.

    • SapphoPoet

      IN! Gorgeous and dramatic.

(Except for the hair, which sort of freaks me out just a bit.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/carrie.lindstedt Carrie Lindstedt

I think she looks amazing. In.

    • Angela Martin

      In! Love it.

    • Francesca Blom

      J’Adore.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

She’s looking very Black Swan from the neck up, and I don’t think I like it. OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

      IN! She looks stunning.

    • crash1212

IN! I like the belt as it gives a nice transition from the BODICE to the plain black skirt. I’d be interested to see how it was shown on the runway. I agree about the eyes…she doesn’t need all that drama around such dramatic eyes, and should’ve toned it down just a bit.

    • mjude

      IN

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I think she is fierce in these photos, IN!

    • http://twitter.com/Bloodisea Barbora

Big IN – love this dress, eye makeup is not working for me.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In the thumbnail I though she’d ripped off Portman’s costume from ‘Black Swan.’ In, but only because of the impact of the entire look.

    • SewingSiren

Oh oh. The gauntlet has been thrown down. I’m on board with the eye, bodice, and belt. I bet they wouldn’t let her wear a gold skirt. Bastards.

    • PrunellaV

None of it (hair, makeup or fashion) is what I would prefer to see her in, but she’s immaculately put together. IN.

    • Lizzyisi

In. Because it’s pretty much the only time I have ever bothered to look at her twice.

    • ccm800

IN. Agree about the eyes though.

    • MzzPants

It’s ‘Les Mis’.  High drama is in order and I think she and Anne Hathaway both brought it in spades.  What other occasion would let her get away with such a look?  She can be fresh-faced another day.  IN.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I absolutely ADORE everything about this gown. I even like the hair. The makeup, on the other hand, is ridiculous. I hate how the black outside corners aren’t even slightly blended into the pink tuberculosis eye shadow on the inner corners. This was clearly intentional, but it has the overall effect of making her appear freakishly insane. What a shame.

    • Candigirl1968

In from the neck down.  The makeup and hair are very unfortunate.
Whoever is doing her makeup (because she had crazy eye with the other McQueen) should be quietly retired.

    • TheLaurenJean

      In. Girl looks great!

    • Joyce VG

IN! I really am stunned. (…it is a bit much.)

    • kayleymaybe

I agree that there are some elements that are a bit off, but as an overall look it’s amazing.  IN.

    • eruannalle

The belt is probably a bit too much, but I can live with it – it’s the eye make-up that’s really bothering me. Her eyes are already practically at anime heroine level, make-up that heavy doesn’t really suit them, I think. Still, overall I think she looks pretty great, and definitely striking as hell. IN for me.

    • stagmania

IN. Though I am on the fence about the eye makeup.

    • BrooklynBomber

Not sure about the Maria Callas eyes.

    • Tatiana Luján

it’s an IN from me, but I agree with you. The belt doesn’t go with the dress, though it’s lovely on its own and the makeup is bad.
A simple belt in patent black leather or a metallic belt would have worked better.
I don’t think that because of being beautiful and having enormous eyes, dramatic makeup is going to look bad on her, but this eye makeup is awful and poorly conceived and executed, on anyone.

    • rloliveira

I think it’s gorgeous, but I agree about the makeup.

    • http://twitter.com/phd_tv Heather B.

IN but the eye makeup is way too much.

    • http://twitter.com/homodachi Monica

      100% WERQ. God damn, girl!

    • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.souffriau Sarah Souffriau

      In. Simply stunning.

    • formerlyAnon

In. Though the uber dramatic eye with that hairstyle is a little old for her – aging Russian ballerina comes to mind – and I don’t actually like the belt. But she and Ms. Hathaway were on the same page, though both need some practice, I think. Perhaps they’ll get it in this run-up to the Academy Awards.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

IN. If you can’t be dramatic about Les Miz, when CAN you??

    • Eva_baby

In.  But reluctantly.  Doesn’t quite hit the bullseye but not horrible either.

    • filmcricket

In. I agree with the make-up reservations, but this was clearly done for distance and not for close-ups, plus it’s an OCCASION, so I think it’s ok. She should stay away from this part of the colour-wheel in general, but just this once it’s forgivable.

    • Belvane

      Eye makeup = In.
      Belt = Out.

    • greyhoundgirl

IN –  I agree that the belt could be simpler–maybe the same belt but half the width?  And the eyes–I think she was trying to get away from the big baby blues and going for something more dramatic and darker.  I like that she’s mixing it up and looking fierce.

    • up with pod people

Love the eyes and the belt, because good lord, THEY MATCH, but in the most interpretive way. I love creative eye makeup that isn’t wackadoo for the sake of it.

Wait – this look gets an In or Out vote and Ann’s doesn’t?  I would vote Amanda In and Ann Out.

    • Wendi126

Agree with you completely on the eyes and belt and still a total IN

    • lalagigi

IN. I saw this picture earlier today and immediately thought it was an in without being asked.

    • mhleta

So theatrical. I thought your objection might have more to do with the fake braid, which really screams “hair piece!” Given the setting, I think it works. I kind of love the belt, too. IN!

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

In. It needed the belt. The braid is a nice touch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sara.m.hottman Sara Hottman

I think she looks fantastically theatrical — like a getup from a Grace Coddington shoot. She’d look stupid at a dinner date, but looks just right for the NY premier of a highly theatrical movie. Love it! IN!

    • afabulous50

      IN

    • erinbinek

The belt?  The belt is fine.  The eyes are what kills this for me.  She already has such wide-spaced eyes that this makeup is making her face look freakish.

      IN. Gorgeous.

    • B_C_J

Overall this is an IN.  I wish the transition between the inner eye makeup to the outer eye makeup had been a bit more blended. The dress is wonderful and I like the belt with it.

    • Kate4queen

In, in a Disney villainess/black swan kind of way.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

IN. I love that she went dramatic with it. If she had done cocker spaniel hair and light make-up, it wouldn’t fit the vibe of the dress at all.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Are you sure she’s not publicizing the movie of “Cats”?  Those eyes…….WAY too much.  Agree about the belt, which is also too much.  The dress is really beautiful.  All told, the positives outweigh the negatives, and I’m voting IN.  Stunned!  Stunning!

    • Nicole Ellis Semple

LOVE that belt. HATE the eyes. hate the hair.

    • harleydear

In. I think it’s one of her better looks and I kind of love the wrench the belt throws into the whole works.

    • lehen

the eyes are ruining it.  but the dress is great.  i’ll give her a tentative in.

    • thecitysleeps

IN. I adore everything.  I think the eye make up looks fabulous and enhances her eyes.  I don’t love love the braided hair but it works here.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

I imagine Amanda and Anne having brunch and deciding that they are going to dress loudly for fun for all of their appearances. I feel like if I was famous I would occasionally rock the cuckoo looks with my good friend.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

IN  Alexander McQueen demands that you step it up a notch and I think her eye makeup is PERFECT.  And the belt is fine.

    • unbornfawn

I really want to like this look, but the bodice is a little too large and is driving me crazy. I do not like the choice of belt. The eye make up and the hair are making me think “Black Swan” None of it is all that bad, the look is just missing and it shouldn’t. Even so, I’ll give her an IN.

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

The eye makeup is all wrong but I actually like the belt with it. It’s an in from me.

    • VioletFem

      IN. Stunning.

    • Monday1900

The dress is stunning–the hair and makeup nearly negate it though.  That’s some of the worst eye makeup I’ve seen in some time.

    • procrastinatrice

Such a better way to bring in drama than Hathaway’s look. But I agree the eye makeup lessens the natural beauty of her eyes instead of increasing it. Still IN.

In, but I definitely agree with your quibbles.

    • msftmargarita

      In. I love it.

    • CeeQ

She’s doing all kinds of swanning around, isn’t she? I say IN because it’s stunning AND drag-y.

    • Lilithcat

I don’t care for the eye makeup or the belt, and the two-toned hair has to go.

      But everything else is fabulous.

      Overall – IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1476648069 Scott Cooper

The make-up works from a distance, but close-up it’s too stark.  It looks like stage make-up.  Agree that the hair is a disaster.  Community theater production of Sound of Music.  The belt looks like it belongs with a business suit.

    • joything

IN. The eye makeup seems to fit the McQueen esthetic, taking her already huge eyes and making them more so.  Also, the belt is fine by me … a kind of neutral space between the plain black skirt and and overdone bodice.

    • Jangle57

      Wow,that’s amazing looking.  IN

    • gabbilevy

In. I don’t love the eye makeup, but it’s not enough to push it to out.

The belt isn’t bugging me anywhere near as much as the eye makeup and the ultra blond braid. The dress gets and IN, but the rest is OUT. Minor IN?

    • Rachelle Neame

Oh goodness she’s looking pretty bad-ass. It may not be perfectly thought out, but it’s still stunning.

I LOVE IT, except the eye makeup is all kinds of wrong.

    • Judy_S

IN. I am a stunned simple country girl. I actually like the eyes, as something to do once. As someone with little squishy eyes that have never been much helped by makeup, I figure that if  you can get your eyes to look like THIS, go for it. But only once, maybe.

In.  I don’t hate it.  I don’t think the eye makeup is flattering at all.  Neither is the lipstick.  I don’t like the belt.  But overall, she sways me to In.

    • nannypoo

      I’d call it a WERQ.

      so in that’s crazy striking.

    • leftcoastpickle

      IN     -she’s a movie star!

    • 3boysful

IN.  You are, as usual, spot-on on both counts.

The eye makeup is also wrong because (1) with the updo it’s giving off a Swan Lake vibe; and it also smacks a bit of Lindsay Lohan.

    • slightlybitterkitten

Tymoshenko called.  She wants her look back.

    • Sara__B

Her eyes and hair look full-on ballerina. Yes, it’s too much, but she’s doing serious red carpet work, so I’ll still give her an IN.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

IN –  I love the way the gold backlights the belt and I think the dramatic eyes go well with the look.

    • f_yeah_marie

In…I’m overlooking the eye makeup, hair, and belt.

      IN IN IN!

I don’t love the eye makeup, but she looks so fabulous overall that I don’t especially care.

    • BayTampaBay

IN.  I do not mind the belt at all it her hair that I do not like.  I would prefer a looser version of this up-do.

    • kaycem

the belt is a little eh for me — not b/c it’s showy but bc it just doesn’t particularly go with the dress.  i’m not opposed to a belt on the same scale, just different color or texture.

still an IN for me though.

i love the eye makeup, hair, and dress…  it’s all really working for me.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DBSIHWVY4ECXGNXAXFXJMSCNIE Katrin

This is inner than just IN for me, love it! Even the crazy braid.

    • Zippypie

I love the dress, just not on her.  She’s too petite and delicate and that bodice is like armor on her – too heavy and structured.  This needs a woman with some shoulders and boobage to show that bodice off.  Love the belt but again, it’s too large for her.  The hair is too Heidi-of-the-Alps and the eye makeup way too heavy.  She doesn’t look horrible, but this look overall is not flattering her natural beauty.

    • nicole seligman

i definitely give it an IN, but doesn’t amanda know she’s not pole dancing for black swan?

      • elleg929

The first thing I thought when I saw her makeup was Black Swan.

    • elleg929

LOVE the dress.  Hate the eye makeup.  Still an IN.

    • maggiemaybe

      In. I’m kinda loving this.

    • Imasewsure

Love it. It’s a little Ren Fair Extreme but awesome anyway. Make up is fun for this look particularly since it’s not her usual drag

    • SouthernGirlRena

I really like the gown, don’t mind the belt, like the outsides of her eyes but not the inner/bronzy part, hate the hair.  Overall IN because it is so dramatic and she looks like she loves it.

    • GorgeousThings

      Very “Black Swan”

    • Nikki Jeffries

hate the eyes, love the belt

    • leave_Blake_alone

    • MarissaLG

IN. She’s giving me classed-up Iggy Azealea.

    • raininmai

The whole thing is an IN for me. The eyes look most dramatic straight on, face tilted down, eyes looking up. I love the dress, love the belt; it’s just stunning.

    • http://twitter.com/poptartsjen Pop Tarts Jen

In! I love it! The eyes caught me off guard, but I think I like them overall.

    • demidaemon

HAAAAAAAAAAAATE the eye make-up. Hate it. I think the rest of the outfit is quite nice though, and I appreciate that she went for a more unusual hairstyle on the RC. Therefore, IN. But don’t wear this make-up again, okay Amanda? :)

    • Snailstsichr

So in. It might be over the top, but it isn’t cray-cray like Anne’s getup. The little girl in me says, “This is a movie star!”

    • kcarb1025

Out… her makeup ruins it all for me, even though I like the dress.

    • Lola67

In. I think she’s really working that dress. I hate the eye makeup, it took it from gorgeous and regal to costume-y. Still, an in for me.

    • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

Out.  Between the eye makeup and the hair, it’s drag ballerina.

    • http://twitter.com/Wlasen Adam West

If they would’ve opted for adifferent sort of cat-eye make-up, this would be perfect. Nevertheless, the dress is AMAZING. eye-catching and striking as hell. It’s an IN for me.

    • myristica_fragrans

this is way too costumey. when i scrolled down, i was expecting to see a tutu.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Brunhilde is working that body armor! IN, because I’m scared to say otherwise!

    • marilyn

Out.  Her braid is noticeably fake.  Her stylist should have tried harder to match the color to her own hair.  Kudos for recognizing that her hair needed to be up.  Her eye makeup is okay for the premiere of an important movie.  The belt is cheesy and cheap.  The basic dress is okay.  It is a very plain style and might look kind of severe without a belt.  I can see that a belt actually helps it.  But not this one.  The plastic fake jungle animal print belt belongs at the sale bin in a tacky store in the mall.

I am not sure what is going on with the waist of this dress, but perhaps it needs to be covered up.  If not, she ccould have gotten away with no belt, but an interesting shawl or stole, mink or otherwise.  Or bold, uncomplicatedjewelry.

    • jmorino08

Love everything about the dress. Hate everything about the hair and make up.

    • plinkiedoodle

      Love everything…but the belt.

    • Scarlet39

Out.  I don’t get the belt, and the mismatched bun looks really awful

    • elzatelzabelz

OUT- unless she’s going to perform a piece from the Nutcracker Suite…it’s a bit too prima donna for me.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

IN. I have come to realize/admit I love the art of a geometric eyeliner shape (variations on cat eye). I don’t love an overly smoky eye, but this triangular version of a cat eye sweep is actually interesting to me and, I think, working for her.

The belt is balanced by the Heidi hair!

    • Louise Bryan

Her eyelids look scorched, like she left the curling iron on them for too long.  However, this whole get-up (and Anne Hathaway’s, as well) are screaming staged to me, as in on stage, and intentionally over the top.  As such, I don’t think the usual criteria apply.

      IN

IN and……the belt is good but….the eyes are bad. I totally agree that the makeup is working against her natural beauty both in shape and color.

    • jw_ny

      OUT!

The ridiculous fake braid along with the clashing belt and wretched eye makeup made the choice an easy one.

OUT. Can’t get past the freaky eyes.

Make-up a bit heavy, but IN

    • Judih1

From the neck down, I like it, even with the heavy belt. But from the neck up, the make up and hair are too heavy. OUT

    • trisker

Agree about the eyes and belt.  Don’t like that fake braid.  But the dress is mos’def IN.

    • Timea Everdeen

IN! I I like the idea behind the eye make up, but it should’ve been more toned down. The hair is quite distracting but I don’t have any complaints about the dress, so it’s an IN from me :)

    • RzYoung

Sadly the eye make up alone makes it an OUT for me, I could’ve in-ed it otherwise.

    • decormaven

In, but I’d swap that belt for a more understated one, and amped up the jewelry factor. That bracelet is too simple – the overworked bodice calls for a stronger piece on the arm. Saw this on television last night- very stunning on camera.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

Don’t love the hair and don’t love the fitting at the bust. Or the belt. OUT.  Which is a shame because the dress is stunning.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

She’s an IN; no way to give her an out even though I agree about the eye makeup.

      IN.

Love it!  I think the eye makeup would have been more successful if it were better blended and smokier, but that doesn’t prevent an IN.

    • http://twitter.com/mcterzakis Marianna

I really don’t like her hair, here, even though I think it works with the overall aesthetic of the dress. In, though! Definitely. What a striking look.

    • http://profiles.google.com/h.e.waddell Heather Waddell

In. I actually like the belt, and I feel that while the eye could have been toned down a little, it’s not horrible. I do like that she’s stepping away from “sweet n’ innocent little Cosette” already. That would have gotten boring fast.

    • bluefish

In but, wow, both Amanda and Anne seem to be in competition for the Lypsinka award!  I know that Les Miz is the height of campy drama and it’s holiday season but could they be any grander?  I don’t mind the belt and the dress is smashing.  The hair — the eye make-up — the vibe.  She’s too young for all this heavy heavy business.   Just goes to show you — possible to get a thumbs up and still look vaguely ridiculous.

    • Daenyx

I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to her just because I HATE Cosette, but she looks pretty amazing here.  Agree on the belt, but it’s a fairly minor issue, and I actually love the eye makeup.  IN.

    • Carly Warnock

    • bellafigura1

In, but the Black Swan eyes are scary.

    • CheriCPat

IN!  Made me gasp, made me want the dress, including the belt and clutch.  Not the hair, but doesn’t change the IN.

    • nyll18

I agree on both counts. I didn’t even look at the dress at first since her eyes look so odd with that makeup. But yes, the belt is a weird addition and the fake braid looks tacky! Out.

      EFFING FIERCE.

WERQ WERQ WERQ so IN oh my

    • guest2visits

Everything is a werq except the braid – it may be her own hair but it just doesn’t look it. And it’s kind of too large and Viking.
I think that the dramatic eyes are perfect with the equally dramatic dress and belt.  A sleek chignon or simple hair-do
would have been enough to finish the look.

    • Lisa_Cop

      IN.

    • ThaliaMenninger

This is IN for me. I think she looks great, even with the weirdness of the two-tone hair and the cat eyes. It’s like she’s going for Hollywood Glamor 1967.

    • barbarienne

As I scrolled down, I had the exact same thoughts as TLo. Amanda Seyfried is one of those rare women who doesn’t need to make her eyes look larger. This eye makeup is awful on almost anyone, and particularly awful on her. For the eyes alone, I have to give her an OUT.

I’m less repelled by the belt. If that was the only thing wrong, I could forgive. The hair is a great ‘do, but not the two-tone. I know how hard it is to maintain blonde, but she makes more than enough money to keep a consistent color, dammit.

    • bailey debruynkops

IN, for the hair & bustier

and freida still should have been an out.
