Hailee Steinfeld in Louis Vuitton

Posted on December 18, 2012

Like PRACTICALLY EVERYONE, Hailee Steinfeld wore Louis Vuitton to her Sweet 16 party, which had a step-and-repeat.

Who HASN’T worn a Louis Vuitton romper to their Sweet 16 party, which has been partially sponsored by Vitamin Water? Come on now, Hailee. Don’t be so … expected. Geez.

Yes, dear. We see your nails – sponsored by Sally Hansen!

Celebrities! They’re absolutely nothing like us!

The outfit is cute I guess,  but she looks kinda swollen all over – one eye, pudgy hand… is she oK?  Having an allergic reaction to the raw bar?

    • margaret meyers

Teens go through a stage where the faces look all swollen — I think it’s hormonal, like her skin.  It settles down after awhile, but they do look puffy for a while.  (mother of teenagers)

  • Kathy_Marlow

I like her outfit and accessories, but the hair and slightly smug look (and I love her, she’s adorable!!) almost kill it for me.

    • Cathy S

The hair. I am having trouble with the hair. Otherwise, she’s adorable.

  • kmk05

Oooooh, not the shoes. Yikes. I am also not a big fan of her eye makeup, but she is wearing that romper like a champ.

    • 3boysful

For me, it’s that the makeup and nails are in the pinker tones, then she has a fire engine red clutch and red in the shoes.  Makes me twitch.

      • kschwarting

I saw that too–red nails with the pink bracelet.  Personally, I would have ditched the pinks.

        • kmk05

It may be a party where the pink bracelet means ‘NO ALCOHOL’? I mean, if it has a red carpet, it probably has a bar 😛

The beige of the shoes is painful to me. That and if she wanted a brown smokey eye, don’t blend it with pink.

          • pop_top

Yeah, it looks like a “club” sort of bracelet rather than a deliberate accessory.

  • Although I am probably the only one who did not care about this LV collection, it is her hair that bugs me. What it is with Hollywood and the long  ‘cocker spaniel’ hair?  Have they never heard or seen  shorter hair cuts?

    • l_c_ann

They can sell more product to keep it shiny when it’s butt length that when it’s shoulder length.  (Well, they can.) And for the coloring, they can charge a lot more to care for twenty four inches of dry, lifeless and brittle hair, than for what Anne H is wearing this month.  Then they can introduce hair extensions…

OK, call me a cynic, but so often there’s $$$ in the answer.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Serious answer to what I’m sure was a rhetorical question: younger folks associate short hair with old ladies. You can do short if it’s very spiky or a weird color, but even something like Emma Watson’s pixie is considered “old-lady-hair”. Just last night my husband watched a clip of Anne Hathaway being interviewed by Ellen, and he said “Wow, her hair. She looks like a Mom.” Since everyone is supposed to be young, stupid, and sexy according to the prevailing culture…short hair is not the most commercial move in an image-based industry.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Eh. It looks like her childhood onesie.

  • Jangle57

I’m okay (but just okay) with everything except the sheepdog hair.

  • I remember what I wore to my Sweet Sixteen: it was a pink plaid pinafore dress which I was so proud that I made myself!  And I wasn’t allowed to paint my nails.  The “step and repeat” was in our living room with attendees lined up, along with my little sisters.  Food and drink was sponsored by my parents, and my mother made swedish meatballs.  Nice to know not much has changed in the intervening years.

Hailee looks too old for her britches.  And speaking of britches, is that a dress or a romper?  There are no photos with any space between her legs so I can’t tell.  If it’s a romper, good luck when you have to go to the bathroom, dear.

  • E. D.

    Do *something* with the hair!

  • Cute romper, but I can’t with that smug look on her face.

    • Aw, c’mon, she’s a teenage girl at a huge Sweet Sixteen party in her honor. She has the right to look pleased with herself.

  • PastryGoddess

I just knew I was going to hate this…but I actually like it

  • lehen

she looks cute.  does she have GIANT hands?

  • Wow do I hate those shoes with that outfit. Cummon girl star, you can get away with a lot more at 16 than beige.

  • Love the natural eyebrows….and that’s about it. Laws, that nail color is like “Hooker Waitress.” Of all the mod looks we’ve seen recently, this one simply doesn’t rate.

  • filmcricket

Romper’s cute (…something I never thought I’d type) shoes are bad, hair is dreadful, clutch and nailpolish clash. Happy birthday, Hailee! Something better for 17, yeah?

  • Joy_Street

    She looks like a Tilly.

  • alyce1213

Cute romper, wrong shoes, typical teenager hair.
In the next to last shot, is that a paper band around her wrist to get her into her own party?  I’m confused.

    • kimmeister

I was wondering that too.  It’s obviously not for an open bar!

  • twocee

    Hate.  All of it.

  • Judy_S

Looking back to the days of the original mod era, I am struck by how healthy this young woman looks–athletic and unfussy, despite the shoes and nails.
There is something ridiculously charming about vitamin water and manicure nonsense as sponsors of a teen party. Seems like it should be a slumber party where the girls do each other’s nails and giggle about boys, not a sweet 16 affair. Can you have a step and repeat at a slumber party?

  • muzan-e

Flashing Chanel Malice at the camera absolutely makes up for the awful beige shinies down below.

(ETA: Is something wrong with the lighting? It looks like someone’s taken a bronzer to the middle third of her face with terrible results and I can’t imagine that actually happened.)

  • cute outfit. shoes, clutch, and hair are ok-but-could-be-better.

the nails… dont really go, do they? the tone clashes with her accessories, and besides, its a slightly mature colour for her, no? relatively speaking.

  • Nicholas

    Those shoes. Dead.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the shoes and the romper, but maybe the shoes aren’t fun enough for the outfit.
    Her makeup isn’t good enough.

  • Little_Olive

OK romper if a wee bit small, OK shoes, bad hair, bad bad makeup, weirdly puffy face.

Would have gone for something a sweeter -and more comfortable, I think that is the worst ensemble for dancing.

  • turtleemily

The sleeve-length is weird and it needs a belt, but it’s definitely a look that only the under 18 crowd can pull off.

    • Tatiana Luján

      A belt would be great.

  • Judy_J

“Look, everyone!  I got a manicure for my birthday!”  The romper is cute, but looks a size too small.  Also a bit too juvenile, if you ask me.  When I turned 16, a romper was probably the last thing I’d want to wear to a party.

  • kayleymaybe

Has she been in anything since “True Grit”?  Thought she was awesome in that movie, but that was a long time ago….

  • Introspective

if her hair was pulled back (or cut properly) I’d like this look a 1000 times more.

  • jw_ny

cute.  love the romper, like most of the rest except her hair and the beige in the shoe.

corporate sponsored birthday party tho?  please!  enough already.   I’m not going to call her the “wh” word, but thinking it…smh.

    • l_c_ann

In New Orleans, the euphemism was “The h word”.

      • kimmeister

*giggles* That reminds me of reading “The Crucible” out loud in my 10th grade English class.  We get to a very climactic scene in which one character accuses another of being the “wh” word.  The doofus reading that part proceeds to call out, “You WORE!”

  • nannypoo

    She’s way better than this.

  • halleygee

I think she looks cute, much cuter than I did at my Sweet 16! I love you guys’ commentary, too!

  • NC_Meg

Didn’t KStew wear this (or something very similar) a few weeks ago? I never thought I’d say this…but I liked it better on Kristen Stewart.

  • DTLAFamilies

It’s like the women in Hollywood have collectively become ashamed of their breasts so they must cover them with hair at every opportunity.

  • bertkeeter

    She looks great !

  • decormaven

What a hoot! You’ve got on designer duds and a dimestore nail polish.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

What is with her eyes? Cutie looks drugged. The outfit is cute-ish, but I think the proportions are off (sleeves a little too long, shorts a little too short, waist a skoch too low…if you can call it a waist where it’s going blouson). I hate the shoes, especially for a Sweet Sixteen. Would have been the perfect moment to deploy some chucks or low motorcycle boots.

  • Too. Much. Hair.

  • kschwarting

The good:  she hasn’t had a public breakdown, isn’t flashing anyone, is still sporting her natural(ish) eyebrows and is managing to pull off that romper.  The bad:  clashy accessories, the hair, and the fact that somehow her sweet sixteen is a public event with sponsors.

    • Qitkat

I agree with the good. And the shoes are kind of cute.
I’m sorry to see she has the default doggie mane hair du jour, and am sad for this generation embracing the corporate sponsorship for what ought to be a truly private family and close friends event.

  • kimmeister

I wish I could see what kind of heels those shoes have.  Are they chunky, stiletto, or wedge??

  • Imasewsure

I love this outfit on her. Adorable – and I don’t hate the hair since she is actually young enough for this to be real hair and typical for girls her age… don’t love the nails but she’s proud of them so whatever.

  • DCSheehan

Sponsored 16th birthday? Suddenly I’m hoping the Mayans were right and we all get wiped out.

  • thecitysleeps

  • Those shoes are super ugly.

  • Calinda_L

Someone should teach her how a proper lady should display her hand (hint: this ain’t it).

  • BeaDee

Ah, 16. The age when checked rompers somehow work. No one over the age of 22 should attempt this.

  • guest2visits

If it’s a top over shorts; very cute.  If it’s a jumper; I like it less.  The shoes are ok, but I can think of a hundred I like better.
Also; is she showing us that the color of her nails clashes with the red of her bag + shoes, ?

  • Laylalola

OMG I still just think she’s the cutest thing ever.

  • quiltrx

Ugly shoes, fabulous romper.  Enjoy it, privileged girl!

  • kikisayshi

I had my Sweet 16 at Planet Hollywood for dinner, does that count?

  • Having the checks on the rompers makes me stare at the way the pattern lines up on her crotch and I am not comfortable with that.

  • Louise Bryan

I just told my daughter she can have a huge publicity blast for her sweet 16, as soon as she lines up the corporate sponsors.

  • Dhammadina

She looks cute, excited, and 16.

  • ccm800

  • laurenoodle

    Her makeup is horrible
