Gwen Stefani in Los Angeles

Posted on December 03, 2012

Yes, Los Angeles. You would be forgiven for thinking these shots were taken in England, because that was our first assumption upon viewing them. Not that we think all English people dress like this, but this is definitely something an American pop star would wear while in England:

Gwen Stefani walks her little dog back to the car after dropping off her son at school in Los Angeles.

Anyway, what’s going on with that trench of hers? Is it sleeveless? Or are the sleeves different from the rest of the coat? Either way, we don’t think we like it all that much.

  • Mostly, I don’t like that it is obviously at LEAST a size to big, if not two.

    • Janet B

No kidding.  Who did she borrow it from?

      •  And it doesn’t read like its a brand new, borrowed garment.

  • I saw a couple of sleeveless trenches in shops this season and assumed that they would be the garments most likely to end up in the bargain bins in January.

    • mshesterp

Are they the trench version of the puffy vest?  It seems vaguely ridiculous (as is my puffy vest, which is cute in theory, but waaaaay too puffy to not make me look vaguely ridiculous as well).

      •  The ones I saw weren’t as over-sized as this. But definitely ridiculous! Someone was trying to make short-sleeved leather jackets happen this year as well.

  • Cap-sleeve trench over a big, baggy, chunky knit cardigan? Ugly.

  • UR CRAZY. it’s chic as hell.

  • decormaven

And she’s getting in a Range Rover! How veddy Brit. That is an interesting concept for a coat, but as noted, it’s hooouge on her.

  • Sobaika

That coat is pure fug. Blech.

  • Ugh, that coat is horrid. And I really expected more interesting galoshes.

  • MoHub

Is that a man’s coat? It seems to button left over right.

  • Are her lips tattooed red because I have never seen them any other way? I realize it’s her schtick but still. Also, as much as I appreciate her making an effort, she is dropping her child off at school. Does this require a full ensemble? Does the woman ever dress down? And, it’s LA and it’s raining: I would be celebrating with wild multicolor wellies (I saw some wild purple and red ones styled like cowboy boots that looked fun). Black is for when one is actually in the UK, not just pretending to be.

Thank you for letting me get this off my chest.

Wearing full-on makeup in the morning whilst dropping of one’s Little Preciousness is not the way to make friends with the other mommies.   Unless you live in Brentwood.  Then it’s expected.  Unless it’s the nanny dropping of one’s Little Preciousness.

    • formerlyAnon

If people were trying to take my photo at unexpected (and expected) times thoughout the day, slapping on full makeup the minute I got up would become a reflex. That way you can run out on short notice as needed and never have the results of your insomnia & facial imperfections on the front of a tabloid with speculations about your health or drug habits.

    • I was thinking the same thing! That is a lot of look and attitude for dropping your kid off at school.

    • barbarienne

I’m having the exact opposite reaction. I think this is what she flung on over her pajamas. Big sweater, oversized coat, hat, scarf, face-hiding sunglasses, giant ugly boots improperly folded at the top, with something…camo pattern?…scrunched into the top of them.

That’s a woman who’s trying to hide from the cameras.

  • StellaZafella

Trench Vest with Snuggy undershirt…Fashion forward rain wear.

     Only on someone like GS.

  • renad

I suppose Los Angelinos live for days like this, when they can wear something other than cut off jeans, James Perse tees, or jersey body con dresses and actually COVER their bodies. But you couldn’t cover me in this if I were dead.

  • schadenfreudelicious

“I am wearing my trench to stay dry in the rain, well except for the sleeves, those are going to get wet, because my trench is…sleeveless…. so i am wearing a wooly sweater to compensate for the um…lack of sleeves”……..

  • MsOlympia

    Cute pooch though.

  • I’m in Northern California, and I was SO excited to wear all my winter gear when it started raining last week, only to realize that it wasn’t actually that cold and I could still get by in my t-shirt/hoodie combo. Perhaps the same excitement befell Ms. Stefani?

    • Izandra

Haha, same here, except I live in SoCal. I’m bummed it’s still too warm even for sweaters.

      • siriuslover

Me too! I was so excited for the rain, and had my kids wear all their winter gear only to actually go outside and feel that it wasn’t that chilly.

      • Wellworn

As a former SoCal girl, I can relate.  There are so few rainy or cold days that you will break out the rain/cold gear at any opportunity.  Now that I live where there is real winter and it can be 20 degrees out, I understand why people laugh at LA people wearing that winter clothing.

    • Janet B

Every time I went out in my raincoat last week, I was wearing a short sleeved shirt underneath.
This morning I could probably wear my winter things, although the sun may make it too warm.  Shouldn’t complain, I’m so happy to see the sun after last week.

    • kimmeister

I’m in NorCal too, and I definitely busted out some of the hat collection!

  • Pants_are_a_must

It is a sleeveless trench. So much so, I’d wager that its original intention was to be a form-fitting trench dress. Well done on shapeless EVERYTHING, Gwen Stefani.

  • I miss my poor little deceased pom. 🙁
I think it’s a sleeveless trench layered over a sweater, since you can see the sweater on her chest, too, unless it’s a very strange coat?
As usual with the more left-field and pointless garments, I both enjoy this outfit and already own a similar (less expensive looking) sleeveless trench. Derp.

    • l_c_ann

Who made your sleeveless trench?  It seems like a really good idea for the hotter parts of this country.

      • It’s from Urban Outfitters, I don’t remember who made it. I bought it on sale and think of it less as a trench and more of a long vest (it doesn’t seem all that waterproof).

  • MarTeaNi

Something something ugly coat something ugly scarf something something TINY PUFFY DOG! ♥

  • If she wanted to take this to the nth degree, she would have put tiny rainboots on the Pomeranian. Nice scarf.

    • l_c_ann

The lack of Wellies on the Pom…..shocking!

  • teensmom99

In defense of the practicality of the sleeveless trench over the big sweater: when it rains in LA, it’s the kind of cold that seeps through your body in the land of no central heating.  So you wear a big sweater.  It’s not much colder when you go outside–you still need your sweater but you don’t need a warm coat over it–you need rain protection.  It’s hard to fit the puffy sweater sleeves in a coat, so you wear a sleeveless trench.  Your sweater sleeves get wet, but so what?

    • alyce1213

      Wet sweater, wet arms.

  • SewingSiren

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

  • Little_Olive

  • ghopping

    ohmygod THAT DOG

  • bertkeeter

I was in LA during this very mild rainy weather….PA LEEEZE! It’s not like she took the bus to her kids school? That’s a lot of DRAG for a some what rainy LA morning!

  • marilyn

I see a little of the sleeve fabric poking out through the bodice, so we can assume the sleeves belong to a sweater.  So what if it’s a sleeveless trench-how often does it rain in LA anyway?

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Call me crazy.  I like it.

    • mmc2315

      Me too!

    • formerlyAnon

      Moi aussi.

  • Jessi03

I want to wuzzle her dog!  What a face!

  • Judy_J

And what’s with the galoshes?  Is it flooding in LA?

    • Yes, it’s been raining for a week.

      • Judy_J

Wish we could get some of that rain.  We haven’t seen rain for over a month now.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I love it! That’s an urban Midwest look there, ladies and gents. I can see stylish gals in Chicagoland, the D and Minneapolis all sashaying around in that get up!

  • padma sallah

Forget the mutant coat. Let’s talk about the dog! It’s looks adorable and fluffy! <3

  • formerlyAnon

I like it. I think it is sleeveless, because I think you can see a sweater layer at the neckline that matches the sleeves. It does not seem too large to me, were one to wear it in a cold climate, because the whole point, I would think, would be to layer to suit the temperature. The trench layer would be suitable as a stylish windbreaker, or in light, misty “rain.”

But really. Did it plunge down to 50 in L.A.? Why is she wearing something that looks appropriate for weather in the 30s?

    • teensmom99

When it’s 50 in LA, you actually feel quite cold.

  • Qitkat

Too much of a muchness. She is swimming in that odd trenchcoat. Dog is best part of the look.

  • alyce1213

It appears to be a tweedy jacket beneath a sleeveless trench. I’m not loving the sleeveless trench part.

  • A scarf in L.A. is overkill.

  • kittenwithaquip

I’m counting the seconds until she starts talking in a quasi-British accent, a la Madonna.

    • formerlyAnon

I think that mid-Atlantic accent that sounds American to Brits and British to Americans is the accent of the first-generation international jet-set English speaking class. The ones that weren’t sent to real British prep schools.

  • Trisha26

You also get the impression that it’s cold. Yes, it was raining in LA but it was about 65 or more! The scarf, trench/sweater, hat, boots are way too much. Is this what’s meant by celebrities are “cooler” than mere mortals?

  • MilaXX

Gwen, I love ya, but this is too extra, even for you.

  • ojosazules

She’s about to go round up some sheep.

  • Imasewsure

It’s such a costume and hilarious for LA (it’s usually 60 degrees even when it’s pouring outside)… still love her for going for it…and I kind of love the sweater/trench woolly thang on her anyway

  • RocknRollmom

Ok, she is on my “can’t really do much wrong” list.  And this is not one of those “wrong” times.  I get why people don’t like it and, yes, it wasn’t quite that chilly here, but I love the look.  I just do.  And how I know my life is so very different from Gwen’s –my lips never ever looked like that when taking the kids to school.  I think I am glad I am not a rock star if I have to walk out of the house with lips so perfectly done because the paparazzi follow me everywhere. Well just a little glad.

  • RocknRollmom

Even better…ska fingernails!!!  I love Gwen.

  • ScarlettHarlot

    Go, Gadget, go!

  • Lola

    ooh nails!

  • guest2visits

OK, I don’t like sleeveless coats; but Gwen still looks pretty good here. The coat looks too wide, or large for her; but I think that
the hat, scarf and boots help make the outfit work.    Minus 2 points for snotty little dog. You just know it bites.

  • patticake1601

Does anyone know who makes that scarf?  I think it’s beautiful and probably costs more than I make in a week but I have to have it.

  • LauraWL

I think its a sleeveless trench over a coat. Which, I don’t know, that sort of makes sense. Isn’t layering coats a thing right now?

  •  Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Apparently Los Angeles.  Despite that, I like the look.

  • It has been raining here in Socal.  Alas, today is supposedly the last day.

  • Laurie Bergman

Maybe it’s one of those “coat of one fabric/sleeve of another” creations that seem to be popular this fall. I see them in the stores with fabric bodices and leather sleeves, but maybe this is a knit-sleeved version. I would like it very much on her if the fit were better.

    • i think it’s the so-cal version of a trench, which is sleeveless.  it hardly ever rains so it’s not much of a problem.  when i lived in burbank, people just stayed in if it rained.  of course you can’t drive in the rain, my mother would say.  but then, she thought we’d all be better off if we just stayed home.

  • Myra C

Who cares about the clothes??? I want the Pom!!!

  • another_laura

Looks like I have not much company, but I kind of like this cap-sleeve-trench-over-a-big-sweater thing she’s got going on.

  • UglyTalents

Well, is it raining or not? The boots say, “Girlfriend, it’s a typhoon,” while all that wool and felt say “if you get us wet, we will smell kind of like your Pomeranian forever.”

  • sockandaphone

it was in the low 60s here, that is winter weather for us. leave us alone. :p

  • LeifBallard

I think it would work if the trench was more fitted and I love an olive trench with faux leather sleeves…and this is not that! haha

  • sunnycalif

It’s the dog who needs booties and a trench!  Perhaps from the extra fabric from the coat.

  • i’ve never been into trenches (nor in the trenches neither)  but the dog is ADORABLE

  • barbarienne

Oh, come on. She’s dropping her kid off at school. We should be glad she isn’t in her pajamas. Just because she’s a rock star doesn’t mean she can’t go out in regular crappy clothes just like non-rock-star moms.

Maybe that’s why the coat is so so voluminous–to hide the pjs.

  • Wellworn

Obviously sleeveless, you can see the rest of the sweater in some of the pics.  Sleeveless trench is perfect for LA.  It gives you that fake misty English look without the bulk or warmth of sleeves.  You don’t need bulk or warmth in LA because for one thing, the temps are pretty moderate there, and you aren’t really in the elements for more than the 2 minutes it takes to walk to and from your car.   Watch for the sleeveless down vests that will cover the shorts and tshirts, worn with Uggs, when the temps drop below 65 degrees in January.

  • The tiny dog looks absolutely naked.
