Cate Blanchett in Givenchy

Posted on December 13, 2012

Ah, there’s the Galadriel we were looking for:

Cate Blanchett attends the ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ Royal Film Performance in a Givenchy gown paired with Givenchy shoes and Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Givenchy Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Lin Kjerulf (NEXT)

Givenchy Spring 2013 Collection

We didn’t much love the outfit she wore for the film’s Wellington premiere, but this feels far more in line with how we think she should dress for an event like this. When your big-budget Elven princess film is having its premiere, you break out the ethereal gowns to wow the crowd. We’re old-fashioned that way. It’s a gorgeous and dramatic gown and she’s rocking the shit out of it. In fact, we think she looks magnitudes better than the model on the runway. There’s not one thing we dislike about this look.

Actually, that’s not quite true. She’s sporting those nutty Givenchy heels we wrote about a while back. She’s actually doing a pretty good job with them, but we still don’t love them. They don’t detract from the look, though, so we’re willing to avert our eyes and focus on the fabulous.

I HATE HATE HATE clear shoes. All they do is make it really obvious how uncomfortable, awkward, and unnatural heels really are for the human body.

I’m not crazy about the dress either, but she’s Galadriel and she’s pulling it off.  She looks amazing in white.

    • Sobaika

Concur on the shoes… but I love her (coral? orange?) pedicure.

      • l_c_ann

Her toenails were probably clear when she put the shoes on.  The color you see is a result of blood flow to the toes being cut off by the plastic, combined with freezing temperatures.

        • Sobaika

Oh gosh, I really hope not. In the fourth picture from the bottom they look downright neon. I thought it was a cute color choice for this outfit but… damn.

    • Jessica Vann

       Her poor tortured toes. tsk.

    • kikisayshi

Ugh, me too with the shoes. But the dress is definitely interesting – nothing I’ve seen before. She is definitely working it.

  • Natalie Bryan

I hate all these clear, plastic shoes we’ve seen lately. They just look like mildew factories. Ick.

    • Introspective

echoing the hate for clear plastic shoes, for a different reason: i see them and think “stripper’s uniform!”

but also echoing the love for her royal fierceness cause cate is rocking this outfit hard.

  • One Cate to rule them all.

  • How Swintonesque, except for the Plasticene Shoes of Death and Fungus.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I was just thinking that, while Cate is doing a fine job with this gown, that the one mortal who would really, seriously WERQ this would be Tilda…but with better shoes.

  • karenbttc

    Serving up Princess Leia realness?

    • DTLAFamilies

That’s what I thought! But that’s not a good thing. She’s invoking the wrong big budget franchise. Not a great way to sell your movie.

      • karenbttc

Unless she’s using the red carpet as a way to subliminally suggest to Disney that she’d be perfectly cast in that franchise’s next installment?

        • lovelyivy

Oh Jesus no. I want her nowhere near what is almost certain to be a dreadful exercise in kicking the corpse of a once-great franchise.

          • Derek_anny

I don’t know.  Sometimes, the right actor in the right character can save a film.  Take Dame Judi Dench in the Riddick movie.

          • lovelyivy

Dame Judi was good in that movie, but she did not save it for me. No one could have saved it- it was just too much of a move away from the style and themes that the original movie focused on for me to love it, or even like it very much. I was not expecting space opera from the Pitch Black franchise!

          • Derek_anny

Ah. I liked the space opera direction.

    • lovelyivy

It’s all I can see- I said the same thing downthread!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, but without the side buns. She does look good though.

    • quiltrx

LOL I always comment before I read anything (so as to give my own opinion and not be swayed)…and I’m glad to see many other someones are on the same wavelength!

    •  I thought, “wow, Starfleet Academy has gone backless.”

  • I think she looks phenomenal.

  • Little_Olive

The shoes are to die… of awfulness.
She looks great in white and is totally pulling off the look. Her eyes know it.

  • Hideous shoes, perfect dress but WHAT Van Cleef jewellery? A ring we can’t see properly?

  • She looks incredible. This is the Cate I’ve been hoping to see.

  • captrenault

    *scroll*  *scroll*
    Enh, it’s OK…
    *scroll* *scroll*

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Fabulous. And I kinda dig the shoes…they really work with this dress.

    • StellaZafella

I like ’em here, too. But it takes a Cate to change my mind like this. I’m not seeing (eeeks!) clear plastic shoes…I’m seeing “Galadriel is barefoot, weee!”

    • I like the shoes too.

  • neofashionista

I have irrational hatred of clear plastic shoes which is a shame becuase those are otherwise really unique
and the dress has too much extra fabric in the chest for me to like it

    • TRSTL

Those shoes would be awesome with a metallic mesh band instead of the clear “fishbowl” band.

    • mhleta

But compare them with those awful and sad things worn by Rita Oro. This shoe is a work of art compared to that. In fact, I’d put these in a museum. They remind me of those crazy super-modern steal teapots.

  • MilaXX

Love this, even the wacky shoes. That dress is doing great things for her butt.

    • kimmeister

Yes, my very first reaction was, “Wowzers, her butt looks great!”

  • bertkeeter

Love her in white. Like her all covered up. Hate that hole in the back with the shoulders covered!

  • “There’s not one thing we dislike about this look.”

    Not even the saggy-boob effect?

  • Plastic and shoes are a combo that should be internationally outlawed.  Otherwise, I am breathing a sigh of blessed relief at the return of Queen Cate!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Shouldn’t there be the fashion equivalent to the Geneva Convention? It would include a ban on the combination of plastic and shoes.  Also granny panties, but that’s a whole separate post.

  • “you’re”? “it’s”?  Boys, did you get enough sleep last night, or coffee this morning???

  • This is the type of white dress that Taylor Swift needs!

  • I love this! She looks fabulous.

  • Ahhhh….morning pretty….chic x 100

  • fringebenefit

I hate this outfit. It’s over-produced and awkward to wear.

  • Julie Parr

This is more Star Trek than LOTR. Don’t like.

  • bluefish

Love the sleeves!  A beautiful, warm white too.  The business of shoes now having to be outrageous and out of the box to garner praise and attention has resulted in year after year after year of hideous hooves that do nothing for the woman wearing them.  I keep hoping for the return of the feminine and wearable shoe on the red carpet.  The ones she’s sporting here are just hideous and do nothing for her feet or legs.  Her toes look splayed and her calves look thick — courtesy of the shoe.

  • filmcricket

This is really not doing it for me.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

You know, I wanted to like this outfit.  I really did.  But that dress looks so awkward in that first photo.  She looks good though.

  • lovelyivy

I can’t see anything BUT Princess Leia drag..

  • Lilithcat

That dress is awful.  It’s ill-fitting sister wife from the front, and god knows what from the back.

I love the heel of those shoes. The rest, not so much.

    • Lizzyisi

I’m glad I’m not the only person who thinks it’s an awful dress.

    • SewingSiren

The dress has more of a Aimee Semple McPherson whiff about it. But Sister  Aimee had some pretty awesome gowns.

  • jmorino08

She looks great but those shoes are an abomination!

  • jilly_d

Sorry fellas, but no. Her boobs are not even close to being in the right spot. This dress, it pains me.

  • Judy_J

I think those wackadoo shoes go perfectly with this gown.

  • I would love this if the front fit better, and the back were more structured around the cut out.  I give it to her for managing to pull of those cruel and fugg shoes.

  • Anathema_Device

Really don’t like the shoes. And while this might not be my favorite dress I’ve seen her wear, she does look good. I do like the combination of modernity and glamour in this dress. I guess that makes it perfect for Cate.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She is the only person who can werq this dress on the whole damn planet. Well done, Queen Blanchett. Serving 21st century Old Hollywood realness.

  • Ok am I the only one that is seeing she’s totally channeling some major Princess Leia realness here?

  • She does look fabulous but that dress is a Princess Leia dress.

  • BrooklynBomber

Interesting from the front. Not so good from the side or back.

  • mhleta

The futuristic minister vibe is so cool! The shoes are perfect for this look, and probably only this look. The back is all I was hoping it would be. I’m always surprised by her curves because she’s got a pretty angular face. I bow in her general direction.

  • mmc2315

I’ll avert my eyes from the shoes, AND the gold shoulder accents.  Her make-up is very pretty, and I love her smile.

  • SewingSiren

Absolutely love the dress. Its perfect for her.

Hate the shoes. There is something horribly wrong with shoes that make it possible to step on the toes of your own same foot. Bad bad bad design.

  • The shoes look like something Miss Piggy would wear. Or maybe a hoochie Barbie. Love the dress, though.

  • mike__tv

The dress doesn’t fit. Where are her boobs? what’s with the back? ugh. I want to like it but I  don’t.

  • chris

That cut-out in the back looks like an afterthought to “sex up” the dress.

  • crash1212

It’s the first time I’ve actually loved the ‘clear shoe thing’ and I actually think they really add to the fabulous-ness of this look. Well done, indeed.

  • Lulu Lafurge

I love the shoes – but I doubt anyone’s feet could actually look good in them.

  • Sara__B

The Fug Girls have a term for when Cate Blanchett makes something look good that no one else could — Carte Blanchett. It’s at work here.

  • Hmm. Looks a little Star Trek Formal

  • Kyle Crawford

Yeah, go all the Star Trek / Space 1999 you want – I can dig that vibe! But, Come on – This does not fit !!!!

  • it’s a little, “help me, obi-one. you’re my only hope”.  but, considering the movie is the hobbit, i guess it works.

  • Imasewsure

It’s not my taste but it is awesome. Shoes don’t bug me here but I hope they do not show up on lesser starlets. She looks fabulous

  • marilyn

When I look at a dress like this, I try to imagine who she is trying to be.  A nurse?  A very clean soldier?  Someoe wearing a bed sheet?  These high end designers get away with putting scattered stuff together by resting on their prestige.  I think this dress is a horrible nurse/soldier/bedsheet mess, and the Givenchy name does not fix that.  The shoes belong with a trendy daytime outfit, and by the way, where is this jewelry?

  • formerlyAnon

    She really is a marvel.

Fab, despite the shoes. Which are interestingly sculptural, but neither functional-looking nor attractive as footwear.

  • MsOlympia

Cate Blanchett and Givenchy are my favorite designer/wearer pairing.  I just think they were made for each other.

  • warnerave

    hmm…kinda star warsy…

  • Ali Quirk

such mixed feelings about the Steampunk baby crutch shoes; love love the rest of the look!

  • I hate this dress.  It’s all too ‘flappy’ and baggy. It’s too long and the double split make it look like curtains flapping round her legs. The sleeves are too wide, the back is gapey and all the baggy fabric at the front makes her boobs look droopy.  It needs some tightness and slinkiness somewhere, maybe just one leg split, or tighter sleeves or something. At the moment it just looks like something I wear at the hairdresser.

  • Jess5628

Love love love this. No real human could wear it of course, but she looks incredible.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

A little Princess Leia until you get to the open back. I love the look, but the dress looks a bit heavy and stiff.

  • Patricia Gillett

Dress is fab on her and makes her butt look amazing. The shoes are hideous and I am going to pretend they do not exist.

  • This looks like Storm Trooper formal to me.

  • snarkykitten

I can’t think of a witty response to this. So how about jesus lord that dress is ugly.

  • plus, it makes her ass look GREAT.

  • maggiemaybe

    Those shoes are seriously creepy.

  • decormaven

Seriously working this dress. Would like to have seen a bit of bling on the ears, but that’s a minor niggle. Those shoes need to go back from whence they came. There’s something spooky about the heel- almost 3D.

  • AuntieAnonny

I’m sorry, that dress is hideous.

  • traceyishere

    Love the shoes.

  • luciaphile

According to Google, it’s 34F right now. She’s wearing sheer plastic sandals? Warm winter white — fine, I can get behind it. Sandals in winter I cannot. My feet are freezing just looking at her.

  • kmk05

OMG SO MUCH LOVE FOR HER AAAAAAH (I’m so sorry for the caps but this movie makes me lose my shit -.-)

  • e jerry powell

Is that an elven side-eye she’s giving?

Because it’s all in white, I can’t tell:  does that bodice look unfitted in the front?  On the model, it doesn’t look quite so big.

  • I don’t like the outfit at all.  Seems out of balance.

  • Judih1

Not a fan of the dress, it looks kinda sack like to me. Like a giant flour sack. The shoes aren’t helping

  • guest2visits

She’s beautiful; but the dress is nothing more than a bed sheet.  I hate it.

  • those shoes are horrible! and the cheap nude colored elastic around the ankle??? WTFlocka, they look lame and Givenchy sure didn’t think about shoppers in other colors…what would a brown girl look like with that dumb color around her ankles???

  • quiltrx

It’s a little Princess Leia, but she’s working it, for sure!

  • rloliveira

I don’t like the shoulders/bodice. It looks like it doesn’t fit. The back is pretty, but the front is too much loose white fabric.

  • Trisha26

Don’t get this dress at all. It puckers and sticks out and just looks odd. I also hate the shoes. (I actually like the flowy odd dress from the Dubai premiere.)

  • She is kind of reminding me of Zhaan from Farscape, in a mystic from outer space kind of way.  I don’t say that like it’s a bad thing.

  • Lola67

Oh Cate, you make me swoon.

  • julnyes

Clear plastic shoes are horrid, but she is making them work as much as they can work. Otherwise I love this look.

  • ccm800

This is a damn werq for me. Hands down. Over and above the pretty girl in a pretty dress equals amazing. This is an incredible fashion plate working the hell out of a difficult dress and showing some DESIGNED hooves how it’s done. I love it. One of my fave celebrity looks this year.

  • In stark, flaming white, no less. Oh, how I love this woman and this dress on her. It, like, redeems humanity for me today. The shoes are from Satan. I ignore.

  • RocknRollmom

I adore this woman and she can do no wrong.  The dress however fails her.  She looks striking and she is working this dress for all its worth, but my first thought was “Sister Bertrill, where is your winged wimple thing?”  Someone else’s Princess Leia comment is spot on as well.  Again, she looks fabulous but the dress does not match her fabulosity.  The shoes are a crime.

  • her poor screaming toesers
