I love this dress, on the model. It seems like too much dress for Carey, and doesn’t fit quite right.  It seems too long in the torso and the skirt and looks a little dowdy as a result.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Well if this is a sampl which is undoubtedly made for a 5’10″ model it would look long.

        • poggi

Exactly. And if it can’t be tailored to fit properly it may be better to pass.

      • maggiemaybe

Agreed. That dress is gorgeous but she could have taken it up and in just a smidge…

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Hate the fake lashes, and I’m thinking this is Not Her Dress. It seems too mature, and a bit too big though on close inspection the fit actually looks fine. Perhaps this is actually Julianne Moore’s dress. The hair is dreadful, “feeling under-the-weather but need tampons at the corner drug”.

      • TRSTL

A center part is not her friend….

      • Candigirl1968

Also, too long, too heavy, and probably would be better without the sleeves.

    • Gretchen Wirges

It really is the styling. The hair with ridiculous roots and lack of makeup make it fall flat.

      • 3boysful

And the fact that it’s too long on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

I like the bodice and the sleeves. As for the rest, I can’t say anything nice. Let the crickets commence their chirping.

    • TheLaurenJean

Why does she always look like a 12 year old AND an 80 year old AT THE SAME TIME?

      • Judih1

        l0l

    • antheapena

she’s so gorgeous1 how can she wear such a dreary frock, wrong length, sleeve is boring, hair looks awful. Shame

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Dowdy and aging. Put it in the closet and take it out when you’re 60, girl.

    • SewingSiren

      Dressy yet serious. Well done.

    • Introspective

this outfit calls for some youthening. starting with taking in the skirt and hiking up the hem. and changing the shoes which are total clunkers.

she’s giving me fabulous in the 75 yr old socialite way. not good for a twenty something starlet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

      those shoes are awful

      • Tatiana Luján

I think they would work with jeans, just not with this dress, teh look sad with the dress.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dkbbmail Dorrene BrownButterfield

Give Helen Mirren her dress back, Ms. Carey.

    • MilaXX

I like the look, but the mua overdid  the brows

    • LLuL

I love the look. She’s adorable.

    • Monday1900

Would be gorgeous if it were tailored to fit her and not the model.  Surprisingly, I like the shoes too.

    • Imasewsure

I think it’s cute but just a little bit too big and too long. Plus the hair (roots ugh!) should have been upgraded in to a better pull-back or her adorable pixie look. Not bad but not her best for sure

    • Funkykatt

This dress belongs on a tall women. Like perhaps myself.

      • http://profiles.google.com/luv2birdie Elana Bryan

I was just going to say the same thing.  Carey’s too short to pull that look off.  I, at 5’11″, would be the perfect person to wear that dress.

        • Funkykatt

We can share the dress, Elana, week by week. I am sure it’s much too expensive for just one pocketbook. I am 5’11″ also.

        • schadenfreudelicious

i’m just under the mark at 5’10″ but i would like to sign up for this club as well….

    • Trisha26

What happened to the adorable Carey? She looks so sad and serious. Don’t like anything about the look from head to toe. The dress is too long and looks like a cage, the shoes are cute but way too casual, her hair is too severe (dark roots, really?), and makeup is blah.

      • eowyn_of_rohan

I’m guessing she looks sad and serious because it’s an Alzheimer’s Disease benefit, not a movie premiere.

    • Darva Sutra

Girl, those are not your shoes!  Borrowed from Hellen Mirren?  Do love the dress, it is appropriate for alzhiemers event.

      • teensmom99

saw this after I asked why she is wearing my grandma’s shoes.  You got it to a t.

    • alyce1213

This is so boxy on her, plus wrong shoes, bad hair seam.

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

I like the dress and think it looks fine on her. The criss-cross of the shoe reads orthopedic and makes the dress look more mature than it should. Silver sandals, better hair, and some color on her face…and this would have been lovely.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

are we bringing back the dark roots thing?  wtf is with her hair?

    • PastryGoddess

The dress is fine but Mrs. Mumford WTF with the hair.  I mean I could get a better do at the local Great Cuts

      • 3boysful

Why oh why are the ladystars all going the yellow hair route?  NOT attractive, girls.

    • greyhoundgirl

Needs to be tailored better, shortened and ditch the sleeves.  They look like they itch terribly.  Maybe that’s why she looks so sad.

    • amf0001

she’s too sweet and tentative for that dress,  that dress needs a take charge dominatrix

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

NO to the sleeves, shoes, length, hair and serious lack of a good makeup artist.

      • B_C_J

         You have identified every problem.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

<> how do you solve a problem like Maria?

    • decormaven

It’s just off. The dress shows better on the model; the dress needs length of arm and torso, which Carey doesn’t have. The straps are too prominent on the shoes and pull focus from the dress. The stylist also backed off from balancing the look with a stronger earring. Why choose those tiny hoops?

    • l_c_ann

      To youth-en it:

      Take off the sleeves
      Put on some chandelier earrings
Don’t stand in front of a chandelier
      Wear a big, wonderful grin.

      Not enough?

    • bertkeeter

Lace and workmanship is wonderful…BUT not flattering silhouette.

    • BrooklynBomber

Horrible on her, horrible on the model.

    • TAGinMO

Carey, please give Helen Mirren her dress back. Kthanxbye!

    • Little_Olive

Too much dress for her, too old for her, totally wrong shoes.

She looks like she’s applying for a scholarship at an Ivy League school.

    • jw_ny

It’s a beautiful dress, but I agree with some of the others that it’s too much for her….better for someone with more stature/presence (Carey’s kinda too demure) Those shoes were an awful choice…shoulda been classic black pump.  I do like that she added a belt…gold was probably wrong for the buckle tho.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It looks cute on the model, but it looks like it’s swallowing Carey whole.

    • Judy_J

I love this dress on the model…Carey should have had it tailored to fit.  It’s too long on her, and the overall fit appears to be off, like it’s a size too big.

    • kimmeister

Biggest quibbles are that the skirt is 3-4″ too long and the unsexy librarian hair.  Everything else I could live with.

    • teensmom99

I’d like the dress if it were shorter but why are Carey and Rooney wearing my grandmother’s sandals?

    • another_laura

      Get. A. Fitting.

    • MarissaLG

I don’t like her hair, but I think other than that she looks really pretty. This is a great dress.

    • judybrowni

Little orphan wearing dead grandma’s dress-up dress.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

This dress is incredible, and the styling is actually quite agreeable. On someone else. I adore Carey, but she’s a tiny bit of a thing and this dress needs someone who can WEAR it.

    • Lily-Rygh

I’ve never actually set fire to a pair of shoes before, but I’ll happily supply the lighter fluid if somebody’s got a match…

    • Jessica O’Connell

She’s adorable and I love her but this doesn’t quite work…

    • crash1212

Don’t like one thing about this look. She couldn’t get this thing hemmed? That might’ve made a difference…as it is, this hits her in a very bad spot and looks entirely matronly. Also, the hair? Blech. And the un-make-up and the ortho shoes? Oh honey, go home and try again.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

OMG. Ship this look to Cloris Leachman!

    • ankali

Lose the sleeves and space out the strips of embroidery between waist and upper thighs (the way it is on the bodice and rest of the skirt), and I like the dress. Wouldn’t be enough, though, without better hair and makeup and a more delicate shoe.

    • berkeleygirl

Would have been fine if at least 6″ had been cut off the hem…

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

      Yuck.

    • Jackie4g

Put this dress on a Sigourney Weaver or (with some altertions) on a Dame Helen, and it would really be  something. It’sa beautiful dress and way too matronly for this young woman.

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

I like it much better on the model. OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

Fanciest librarian outfit i ever done seen.

    • TLJezebel

Why does she always look so pinched?

    • quiltrx

I think this would have been much easier for a wider range of ladies to wear if the skirt wasn’t so full.  That plus the length really limits who this is going to look great on.

I also would prefer that the sleeves ended with a hem instead of that banded cuff.  That definitely reads ‘matronly’ here.

But I will stand up for the ‘matchy’ shoes–if you find a pair that so perfectly complement the ‘idea’ of your dress, you should go with it!

    • kikisayshi

      Too long.

    • Aurumgirl

The whole photo makes it look like it’s 1933 and her husband died and she lives in Sicily where she will have to dress this way until it’s her time to go as well.  Oh, and she’ll have to stop touching up that rootline in her hair, because she’s not supposed to be vain anymore either.

      • AnneElliot

        Brilliantly put!

    • AnneElliot

Girl, that is not your dress. She looks like a sisterwife trying to be glamorous.  It’s too long, sleeves too matronly, and I HATE PEEP TOES.  And that hair is too, dare I say it, librarian (and I work in a library).  Too demure and boring for a sparkly black dress.  You’re at a gala dinner, so gala hair is necessary.

    • EEKstl

Lose those horrid sleeves and let her hair down and then we’d be getting somewhere.

    • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

Don’t love the dress, but the terrible shoes really drag it into Hell. Make-up and hair also terrible and she’s usually so beautiful and darling!

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

They need to hurry up and do the movie version of Life Mask with Carey as Mary Berry (and Cate Blanchett as Eliza Farren, and Meryl fucking Streep as Sarah fucking Siddons) already before I pop a gasket. She is so perfect.

    • lizajane1776

You know the look is bad when you wonder “just how old IS she?”

    • Allison Woods

She is too petite for the dress.
