Britney Spears in Christopher Kane

Posted on December 07, 2012

In thumbnails, this looked like a slight step forward, sartorially speaking, for Miss Brit. But the full-size photos tell another tale, unfortunately. Or rather, they tell the same old tale:

Britney Spears attends Fox’s ‘The X Factor’ viewing party in Los Angeles, California in a Christopher Kane dress paired with Miu Miu sandals.

Honestly, if it didn’t have that lace panel on the back, we would’ve considered this a win, but that’s just a bridge too far for us. If the entire dress was leather – and the bust fit her correctly – we’d love this look on her. Well, almost. She’d have to switch out the honky-tonk shoes for something a little more… we hesitate to say “elegant,” since we are talking about a leather mini on Britney Spears, but at least something a little more stylish.

And since the comments section is likely to be overrun by comments asking what it is, we’re assuming she’s having a tat removed on her ankle.

      White trash with money.

      • twocee

She the modern punchline to the old Graceland joke (what happens when you give a redneck money?)

And I say that as someone who is 1. a redneck at heart and 2. rooting for Britney.

      • melissaisasnob

What a nasty thing to say.  Your picture looks like white trash without money.

        • AthenaJ

Isn’t that just being nasty in return?

      • Little_Olive

That seems a bit harsh, even for her.

      • bellafigura1

        Seriously uncool.

    • clevRcat

I’ll never figure out the hair thing with her.  Doesn’t she have a team of people?  Does she own a mirror?  Her hair is always ratty and awful.  Why?

      • http://phreddd.livejournal.com/ Fred V

…and kinda lacefronty if you look close enough.

      • Carly Warnock

i actually thought her hair looked pretty good here for britney post breakdown.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

Mama always said “Money can’t buy taste.”
How uncomfortable does she look in these pics? Poor thing!

      • lovelyivy

She has generally looked SO uncomfortable in red carpet pics over the last few years that it actually makes me uncomfortable to see her. I don’t know that woman, I just hope she’s more ok than she seems.

        • Kayceed

I’ve never seen photos that come closer to “a mechanical pose.”

          • 2ndhandchic

She has the same forced smile and scared look in her eyes in every photo. I feel sorry for her.

            • http://bunnymcfoo.livejournal.com/ bunners

yes, this exactly.  I actually find myself feeling weirdly protective of her because of that look in her eyes.  :/

          • AthenaJ

            and ‘deer in headlights’

        • gabbilevy

She looks so miserable, poor dear. I’ve never been a fan, but I really just hate to see these because she looks like she hates to be there.

        • frederieke

She makes the face I make when I can’t figure out what to do in a picture. Giant bug-eyes and the hugest grin possible for extra cheese. Makes me look like a creeper.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed – don’t with the lace, and the leather dress is fantastic!  But, of course, Brit has it at least two sizes too small and she looks physically pained by everything going on.  Poor Brit – she always looks so unsure.  “Yeah, I’m Britney? bitch?, uh…right??  Can I go now?”

      • 3boysful

Two sizes too small–word!  It makes me cry seeing how the strap is going over the fleshy part of her breast.  Sad.

        • Kristin McNamara

For reals. Check out the shadow of her boobs in the second to last picture. Youch! That strap is not only “going over” the fleshy part of her breast, it’s CUTTING into it! Apparently very sharply! :(

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Yes – just leather and coming about an inch higher in the bust and two inches lower on the leg and it would be gorgeous.

    • TRSTL

Skip the lace panel, add length to the knee, switch the shoes, give the hair a …… oh, nevermind.  Lost cause.

      • MoHub

Up a size wouldn’t hurt either.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

The breast cut-outs are so absurdly tiny that I don’t think going up a size would remedy that problem at all. Really weird choice on the designer’s part.

    • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

Photo three is “smiling through the pain” personified. Damn, those shoes and that hair are butt ugly. The floral embroidery is pretty on the leather, but I just can’t with this one….

    • Emily Giovanni

Or maybe she already fell down one time in those shoes and scraped her ankle. That is definitely what would happen to me.

      • BuffaloBarbara

That was what I thought–or snagged the heel getting out of the car and scraped it on the door.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

Smile never quite reaches the eyes.  :-(

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Very well put.  I think this poor woman wants out!

        • http://twitter.com/luqluqe LuqeMann

I wish someone would just kidnap this woman and take her on a vacation or something, or anything, I don’t know. To just get this poor lady out of there (wherever “there” is).

    • http://profiles.google.com/thehilariest The Hilariest

The only thingthat looks more uncomfortable than her forced smile is her poor smooshed chest.

      • RebeccaKW

Do you watch the show?  The poor thing is the same throughout.  You can see the effort she’s making to get through whatever lines she was told to recite before the show.  I know she’s trying to keep her name out there in a positive way, but this poor girl is not ready for this.

Also, if you aren’t watching the show, it’s hilarious.  Britney critiquing vocal performances, Khloe Kardashian, Demi Lovato and Simon arguing for no reason.  Most of the ‘singers’ are terrible, but the other stuff is fun to watch.

        • Jepham

I watch the show (sorry to admit this) and I’m uncomfortable every time Britney leans into the mike to rasp her one line critique. She only seems natural when they show clips of her mentoring the young girls. The only singers I like on the show are a couple of the 13 year old girls and the country singer has a good voice but I’m not a fan of country music.

    • http://twitter.com/shiningcui Shanying Cui

Why does she always look so uncomfortable now? Girl, you’re BEAUTIFUL and your smile is gorgeous! Flash some confidence!

    • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

      What’s with the creepy grin?

    • ashtangajunkie

If the lace panel were gone, it properly fit her bust, and it was just a little longer, I would adore this dress on her. Not with those shoes. But still. So close, Britney Spears. So close.

    • http://twitter.com/bfnh bfnh.

looks like a chinese laundry shoe box converted into a dress.
      plus lace.

    • EditKitten

She just looks so … overwhelmed. Her face screams, “I don’t want to be here.” I know celebrity isn’t foisted upon people and you have to choose to want it, but I can’t help but feel a teensy bit sorry for her at this point.

      • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

At this point, I’m wondering if she really does “choose” to want it, given the conservatorship and all.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Agreed.  She looks like she wants to scream.  You’re right,  celebrity isn’t foisted on people. I do wonder, tho’,  just how much control she has regarding her career decisions.  She looks like she might give it up in a heartbeat.
I really never gave her a second thought until I saw the tapes of the paparazzi shoving the EMT’s out of the way when she was being put into the ambulance after her “breakdown.”  This was during the “rip her to shreds” era.  They are doing the same thing to Lindsey Lohan and Amanda Byers now – waiting to pounce, waiting for a slip-up, until it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

        *steps off soapbox*

      • eowyn_of_rohan

To some degree it was foisted on her as a child Disney star who was a sex symbol before her 18th birthday.  I generally don’t feel bad for celebs, but it’s clear this was a path in life that was chosen for her at a young age by other people and I don’t think she’d even know how to step away and be a “regular” person after almost her whole life in front of cameras.

      • EditKitten

Agreed with all of you — it just looks like she has no choice anymore. And that sucks. :(

    • http://twitter.com/jack_attack88 Jackie Stewart

Are her Spanx showing through the lace on the side of the dress? What is that?

      • 3boysful

Looks like it, but I don’t know if they make Spanx for something that short.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

They make spanxx-type panties. Not that I would know…………….

          • 3boysful

Of course I am assuming you heard of these from a “friend!”  ;)

      • kimmeister

That is pure gaucheness, that’s what it is.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I just cannot get past her mightily pained, forced expression.  The dear thing looks TERRIFIED to be in front of a camera. “If I smile really big, they won’t notice I hate this.”  Its a really cute dress, potentially.  As T and Lo said, the lace is just one element too many.

    • Pennymac

Sigh. As a mental health professional I feel so sorry for her. The desperation in her eyes in photo #3 haunts me. I just don’t even want to weigh in on the dress, shoes, or hair; someone needs to rescue this girl and take her to a land where she doesn’t have to poledance for a living, can get some mental and spiritual health going on, and can learn to take care of herself instead of having a team of “handlers” that push her into this stuff because of the Britney Spears Branding Machine.

      • MissAmynae

        WORD.

I’d like to see her with someone beside her on the RC- maybe Simon? Literally to hold her hand and guide her through the lights and flashes. (of course, that would send tongues wagging, but whatever, girl needs someone standing beside her.)

I know Simon is a bit of ass on the show, but he’s a pro, so I think could make her laugh and relax a bit, while being a sort of mentor/father-figure to reassure her as well.  At least to get her through this show. Hopefully she’ll be able to get away after this- maybe disappear to Switzerland or the coast of Spain- somewhere beautiful and quiet.

eta- from someone who lives with mental illnesses, and knows the value of quiet.

      • http://twitter.com/jelenawoehr jelenawoehr

She does look miserable and terrified. On the other hand, it’s the only career she has, and without talking to her I can’t know if she’s made a choice to push forward with it rather than retire on her ample money. Maybe she wants to face the fear and overcome it? Unfortunately with a permanent conservatorship she has no choice, so it’s doubtful that anyone will ever really know if she wanted her “comeback” or not. I hate to assume that just because she’s mentally ill she isn’t capable of deciding that she wants to continue her career, but my heart says she’s most comfortable cuddling her kids on the couch, not posing on the red carpet.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Those shoes are Miu Miu?  They look like Payless.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

This poor woman. Let her retire, already.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Not too crazy about leather clothing, but this is a cute dress.  Sans the lace, a couple of inches longer, and an inch or two higher.  I even like the shoes.

    • Pants_are_a_must

This has to be intentional. It has to be. Britney Spears of the early 2000s was just as tasteless, and this is what her handlers are hoping to evoke. Too bad it’s just beyond sad now.

    • Little_Olive

Poor girl… as I always say, her look of discomfort + memories of the late 90s kinda make me root for her (and not LL).

The worst she gets it, the more I wanna help her =   I’m thisclose to taking a plane to LA.

Please, Brit. Cut and darken your hair. Wear Bras. Lose the supertight/lace/cutouts, your body’s been looking so much better. Change your eyebrow person.

But, even for her, the Spanx showing under the lace is UNFORGIVABLE.

      • mmc2315

I’ll go with you.  Bitter Kittens to the RESCUE!

        • decormaven

Soon as I figure out my costume and supernatural powers. Truthfully, this is beyond me being able to make a casual fashion comment. The karma wheel will roll for her “handlers.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      Bless her heart.

    • http://twitter.com/luqluqe LuqeMann

Oh, that tattoo-removing scar sure looks painful. Anyway, I just love how hilariously and spectacularly circular her breast looked in that dress.

Oh, and one more thing: FUCKING ROBOTIC SMILE

    • schadenfreudelicious

she looks terrified, like mugshot terrified…her level of uncomfortablness in front of a camera is palpable….

    • formerlyAnon

Girl exudes anxiety. I really don’t think I’m reading that into these photos.

Lace side panels are a disaster, cute, if young dress otherwise.

    • AnnaleighBelle

She always looks so sad, especially when she’s smiling.  She needs to retire (imho) and focus on her own well being.  I feel like she’s a prize pony that her handlers keep trotting out.

Madonna said that, at 16, Britney was the most together person she’d ever met

    • nannypoo

I’m embarrassed to admit that I like this dress. It’s obviously poorly fitted in the boob area and it’s too short, but worn by the right non-Brittney person it could be really interesting.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I thought one of the older teens could definitely pull it off. Maybe even K-Stew?  Britney is a little too “sugary” for it.

      • Kate4queen

I actually like the dress too, but it’s not the best choice for her.

    • frannyprof

She’s been in the spotlight so long that it strikes me as odd that she never knows how to pose and never looks comfortable doing the step and repeat.

      • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I agree with you completely! She always looks uncomfortable. And she also needs some better advice on how to dress, because this just does not fit her. And that’s overlooking how gaudy this dress really is!

    • Judy_J

As we say in the South, bless her heart.  She’ll always be a trailer park princess.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She’s too busty for such small cups on the dress.  Really, no cups, but a well tailored top would have been much better. I agree with TLo that it needed to be all leather, but I also think just a skosh longer.  Also what is the nude piece above her waist int eh back? I feel like I’m seeing her underwear, but I know this woman doesn’t wear granny panties.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

She needs to be advised by Gwen Stefani or Kristen Stewart about finding a look that she’s actually comfortable in.  And that she didn’t wear black opaques with that ankle thing shows a complete lack of common sense…

    • alyce1213

Too many “Ifs.” Bret’s just super tacky; she has no clue.  I doubt a fashion intervention would help; it just is what it is.

    • RzYoung

Nah, just psoriasis no biggie. I’m not going to say anything bad about her, it’s not fair.

    • Kristina Toma

I just assumed it was eczema.

Skin issue aside, she just looks soooo self-conscious and uncomfortable. Like a tween going to their first school dance.

    • BrooklynBomber

I don’t know if I can look at any more pictures of her. She always looks so entirely uncomfortable, I feel like I’m looking at pictures of someone who really doesn’t want to be seen. Retire, girl. Buy yourself a nice farm with horses and bunny rabbits.

    • afabulous50

She’s got that cray-cray smile & eyes in these photos…

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

She seems so uncomfortable. :( I bet at home in some pj’s she is the cutest happiest thing. I guess that is what I hope for her. She seems to hate this circus.

    • crash1212

Baring your teeth is not the same as smiling. I can’t even with this poor girl. I think we should declare a moratorium on Brit-Brit.

    • SewingSiren

Like a child that isn’t being taken care of.

    • Jecca2244

she looks so uncomfortable. like someone is stuffing her in clothing that doesn’t fit and she doesn’t want to wear and making her do things she doesn’t want to do…

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

Oh, Brit.  You so could afford a stylist.

    • barbarienne

I’m glad to see that Britney seems to be climbing out of the hole that she was sharing with LaLohan. I completely agree with TLo’s comments, but I’m willing to see if the baby steps of Ms. Spears eventually become a grownup stride.

That said, girl needs to learn not to smile so wide if she doesn’t really mean it.

    • MarissaLG

I just really dislike looking at pictures of her because not matter where she is, or what she’s wearing, she always looks like she’s hating every minute of it.

    • http://twitter.com/siao siao

I’m pretty sure the ankle thing is psoriasis, I remember reading that Britney suffers from it. I have eczema which isn’t as bad, but I already feel self-conscious about it when it flares up, can’t imagine what it would be like if paps were snapping pictures of it.

Aside from that, agree with everyone else about her expression saying it all. She clearly doesn’t want to be doing this. :(

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

ughhh, poor brit, a little more effort!

    • Scott Isaacs

I can’t even comment on the clothes. I’m overwhelmed by her expression, just like so many here. She just looks like she’s trying so hard, and in such pain, hoping someone will take her away. I kinda want to take her home and give her a massage, draw a bubble bath for her, fix her some comfort food and reassure her that everything will be alright. And this is from someone who typically has little sympathy for the trials and travails of the rich and famous.

Nope. Still can’t concentrate on the dress.

    • MsALVA

She needs Victoria Beckham to give her a makeover. A new haircut, maybe a sharp gorgeous shoulder length bob, tone down the makeup, and chic elegant understated couture. She really, really needs to lose the honky-tonk dresses and step it up several levels.

      • Tatiana Luján

I think a bob is too devere. Maybe some layers but definitely shorter hair, a different- less yellow hair color and much less tanning.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

but remember, she’s living in the so-cal country suburbs and comes from the deep south.  can’t see her hanging out with becks in beverly hills.  she’s a country girl at heart.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

Poor girl. Her mouth is smiling but her body language and eyes are screaming GET ME OUT OF HERE. She doesn’t look comfortable in that dress at all…maybe because it’s got a “turtle skirt” (google it) and the spaghetti straps are bisecting her boobs.

      • Scarlet39

I can’t help  but feel very sad for her.  Her eyes seem dead and her smile is stiff and fake.    Does she even want to be in the public eye?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

That’s what I’m saying. But, really, what else is she cut out for? It’s this or disappear and stop making money. So the pole-dance continues.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She looks sooooooo uncomfortable. And the dress fits her terribly in the bust. And the 1990s want their shoes back.

    • bertkeeter

Dress is cute just too small! What ever that thing is on her ankle…it could use some moiusturizer! NASTY! And burn those shoes!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

She looks like a deer caught in the scope of a deer hunter.  I actually feel bad for her, she just looks so uncomfortable with the the whole thing.

    • f_yeah_marie

Her smile and facial expression look so forced and uncomfortable.

    • Tatiana Luján

Honey, you should only put boobs or legs on display, boobs OR legs, not both at the same time, that’s trashy.

    • Imasewsure

Really not too bad for her (ignoring the lace)…. hopefully she will soon learn to add two inches to the bottom and two inches on top and all will be well in the forest… again for her, not awful…

    • Phoebe L

If you’re talking about the dry scaly patch on her left ankle, that’s not tattoo removal–it’s probably psoriasis.

    • oatmealpie

It looks like she bought this whole outfit at a Kohl’s in the early ’90s.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

      That dress is tragic.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Why are those straps placed where they are? Why? WHY?!

(I’m not even going to get into the lace back)

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

Why does she always have that “dead” look in her eyes now?  Anyway…

Even though she’s barely in her thirties, she’s looking milf-esque trying too hard these days.  She needs to leave the body-conscious (aka slutty) clothes alone, warm up or darken that blonde, and try something different with the makeup.  I’m a fan but it’s just not working anymore, poor thing.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the dead eyes could be from medication.  from what i read, she had a serious break with reality, and she may need medication for the rest of her life just to cope.  she looks like she’s hanging on by a thread.

    • ccm800

she ha had that spot for years -  i suppose its psoriasis

    • Sara__B

Bless her heart. Her clothes always need a few more inches in every direction — up, down, and around. I wish she’d dress for the size she is, not the size she used to be.

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I’ve made this exact face at many a family gathering.

    • guest2visits

She simply shouldn’t be wearing stuff that makes her so uncomfortable. I don’t think this fits her well, at all.
And she looks fit - but the dress is too tight, too short, and too tacky. The back looks like underwear.
I’m not a Britney fan; but hasn’t she been doing this look forever now, can’t they find her a better looking wardrobe ?
She should be allowed to grow and have some dignity; rather than be made a graceless show pony for titillating photos.

    • Kristy Evans

She has psoriasis, that’s the rash on her ankle. Her pained smile makes me feel so badly for her. She is SO uncomfortable being in front of cameras. I honestly think she has PTSD when it comes to thousands of cameras flashing – not even joking. Back to the clothes, I love the idea of a floral design on leather. I’m sure it’s been done before, but it’s really smart. The lace though…oof.

    • ShayShay

Britney is no style icon, so I won’t be commenting on her.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

i’m repeating myself; but the poor thing looks terrified.

    • Mazenderan

She looks like she’d rather be anywhere else.  I don’t know how much her dress contributes to that – but it does certainly look a little tacky.  She doesn’t seem comfortable in it.

    • MilaXX

This is as good s she gets

    • Rebecca Jay

I have such a soft spot for this child (yes, I know she’s a grown woman) – even when dressed not to my liking, it’s like looking at my own daughter and doing the mom-sigh “oh, sweetie” thing.
And as with my own, finding something nice to say.  Britney: lovely skin (all over) and great legs!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ENBX3563Q4ZNCVRGSJVFIB7OAA Thom

No, that’s psoriasis or eczema on her foot. I get it in exactly the same spot, but I don’t have to constantly wear high-heeled boots that would agitate it further.

I was really looking forward to seeing this collection on the red carpet, but this is not a good translation of it : if the lace panels were replaced with leather, this would’ve been a pretty passable outfit.

    • http://twitter.com/OhFaerieNuff Laurie S. Neilsen

As others have guessed, she has moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. There are treatments for it, but the side effects can be pretty scary. Considering her background, I can see why she might want to avoid drugs, even the prescription type. If the only symptom she has is some gross lizard skin, it might not be worth risking death (literally a side effect) just to clear it up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

      eeeeeeeeeeeeee! nice rash too!

    • quiltrx

I guess this dress is for the type of gal that doesn’t wear panties.  And unfortunately, apparently Britney does now.

And the poor girl looks miserable on every RC.  I wish her whole face were smiling sometimes instead of just her mouth.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

you know, this is pretty ok for britney.
yes, the lace shouldnt come all the way to the front. i wouldnt mnd it if it was only in the back.
the shoes could be sharper, and particularly the colour doesnt really work.
but the main problem is her standart creepy face and ratty hair.
but still. this is pretty ok for britney.

Oh, BritBrit. Visible Spanx is never a good look.

You’re not 19 anymore honey, You’re not a slave for anyone anymore and now it’s time to be a bit more sophisticated sexy, instead of body body body

terrible. ill-fitting, too young, very ’90s, cheap shoes. some stylists have to start taking her calls again.

Why Britney, WHY?! You’re a gorgeous woman, why do this to yourself?

It always makes me sad to see her in these pictures. Everyone can see that she’s uncomfortable. She looked so happy when she was dancing in that documentary a few years ago. Remember around 2008 when she was giving kids dance lessons? I think she needs to go back to that.Maaaan, if I had her body, I’d WERK every outfit.

I’ve actually been warming up to Britney as a human after watching her as a mentor on the Xfactor, (though I’ll stick to my opinion that she is more puppet than puppeteer, artistically speaking.) She’s had some surprisingly winning looks this season. Her hair and makeup have been pretty good, too. This was not one of her better moments, however. The whole thing is just too small for her.

So pretty. So rich. So tacky.

Looks like she’s trying to smize and it just ends up looking creepy

I think the thing on her ankle isn’t a tattoo removal scar but psoriasis. I read somewhere that she has this condition and it flares up when she’s stressed.

    • carpediva

No, the ankle thing is not tattoo removal; it’s been going on for a long time now, and you can just make out the same situation on the back of the opposite one.  Recent press reports are saying it’s psoriasis.

Whatever it is, it’s something she can’t help so no judgement there. What I can’t understand, is why, when being photographed is part of your job, and when you are clearly already super insecure… why on earth wouldn’t you rock a pair of ladypants, or ankle booties, or something? (Really hoping that doesn’t make me a skin-disorder bigot or something; I’m not trying to be!)

Also, agree 100% with everyone wishing this woman was anyplace else, for her own sake.

more than the outfit, I think she just looks so uncomfortable in her skin
