Anne Hathaway on David Letterman

Posted on December 12, 2012

Yes, yes. We’re all very tired of her now. But dammit, she keeps going out in outfits worth discussing and darlings, you know how that’s catnip for us.

Anne Hathaway makes an appearance on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in New York City in a red floral dress.

And while we might be convinced to agree that this outfit on its own isn’t particularly discussable, we felt that the world needed to see her dressed in something conventionally pretty after that “Hefty Bag Dominatrix with Rickets” thing she unleashed on us all yesterday. Besides, she just looks straight-up pretty here, and that’s kind of refreshing after all the “I’m SERIOUSLY a SERIOUS ACTRESS” attention-seeking outfits we’ve been subjected to. Her hair looks especially good. Thank you for this, Annie. We suppose you’re going to come back dressed like some sort of couture chicken or something, but for now, we’ll take old-school cute.

Maybe not discussable, but darn close to perfect. Possibly my favorite thing I’ve seen her in this year.

(ETA: And I still love her hair.)

    • She had a killer coat on over it before they took the pictures, too.

    • Terrie_S

The hair is made more awesome by knowing she let them do a hack job on her actual hair for Les Mis.

    • siriuslover

I agree. She looks very pretty. And that dress works really well on her coloring.

  • RzYoung

The hair’s so good, it’ssogood! Thanks for the ‘all angles’ shots, I can print these for my hairdresser 😉

    • lizajane1776

Tempting as that is, particularly since I have an appointment today, I know that for me, I don’t take the time to straighten my hair enough for this style. Sad.

    • Little_Olive

I think it’s because she has a lot if it (hair), so even though it’s short, it has movement and looks full.  Michelle Williams, Emma Watson, Carey Mullingan: take note.

    • AthenaJ

Agreed, this is a really good short style for her – I’m glad she’s grown it out a bit.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

When she cut off all her hair I felt a little sad for her. But last night I was looking at a slide-show of her various looks on The Daily Beast and I had to conclude that she looks much better with this little short cut. She has a beautiful neck and her features are more prominent with this cut. I think she looks great here.

  • she looks great

  • seriously killer bod. i also love the colors in this.

  • filmcricket

I seriously hope she keeps her hair this way for a while. Emma Watson said she had to start growing hers again for roles, but I’m like, “They can’t provide you with wigs?” Anyway, great dress, cute shoes, make-up is perfect. The posing’s a bit much, but on the other hand, girlfriend is probably freezing, so good for her for not showing it.

    • pattyw

I read that same quote and thought: “No female character in a movie is allowed to have short hair?”

      • Sobaika

Maybe it’s more for casting and directors? Because her pixie was such as specific look, it was hard to see her as anything other than twee/mod. I didn’t really get that quote either.

        • I’m pretty sure this is the key; it’s a bit like selling a house – you want to leave enough stuff in it to make it look lived in, but not so much that potential buyers can’t look past your own stuff to envision their lives in the house. And a pixie cut has such innate specificity attached to it.

          • ecallaw1977

             Good analysis.

        • Zippypie

Wigs or extensions are an expense.  If they want longer hair, they’ll usually go with an actress with longer hair.  There are plenty to choose from.

          • BeaDee

Wigs also often end up looking like wigs… insert cross-reference to Twilight movies here.

          • pop_top

Exactly this. Emma’s “Bling Ring” hair looks off to me.

        • filmcricket

I could certainly see that for women who aren’t well known, but Watson’s one of the most famous faces on the planet, and Hathaway’s not exactly an unknown quantity either. You’re probably right, though.

    • her hair style is wonderfully refreshing.  Short, but with a fierceness to it.  Like Yvonne Craig in the Batman series (and I mean that in a very good way ;))

    • pookiesmom

I agree with the other comments. Also, having long natural hair is like a blank slate. Productions probably like that because then they can cut it or color it or mold it into whatever they want. I do hope she keeps her hair like this for a while, though, she looks spectacular.

  • elleg929

Very refreshing after yesterday’s cracktastic outfit.

  • Violina23

    I think it’s adorable. Very holiday-party-appropriate too.

  • Really pretty. I adore her hair.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed!  I cannot quibble with any of this – pretty color, great hair, sane expressions.

  • Gorgeous. I want that dress for Christmas. Really good lipstick choice too.

  • Super cute frock on a super cute chick.  Nuff said by me.

  • ccinnc

    Freaking amazing. Love this.

  • Gorgeous.

  • mjude

i love everything about it.  she looks smashing!

  • I love it, and want it. She can keep the hockey puck shoes.

    • Sara__B

       Hockey puck shoes. Perfect!

  • What happened to just everyday basic stiletto heels? Why do they all have to have those hideous platforms? It’s not like she needs the height. I really can’t wait for them to go away. They ruin EVERYTHING.

  • geans

I think it’s the best she’s looked! Good for her.

  • Dhammadina

Wow. She looks fantastic and the color is great on her.  It’s her time: let her shine.

  • She looks really comfortable in her own skin, we all have to give her that

  • Tatiana Luján

Love the dress, hair and makeup, hate the shoes.

  • Dot

She looks absolutely radiant! Love the hair and am jealous of her ability to pull it off.

  • Tatiana Luján

Is she wearing hose? Her legs look way wither thant the rest of her body in the first picture.

  • nannypoo

I don’t particularly like this dress, but she looks great in it. I love the way her hair looks here. She has enormous facial features and the tiny pixie cut isn’t enough to frame her face, but when it comes forward like this it is really beautiful on her.

  • Oh god, can’t you see her in Big Bird couture?

  • Tamara Hogan

  • Better.

  • i quite like this look…proof again that peeps always look better when they aren’t trying too hard…

  • This is the best her hair has ever looked. Honestly, she deserves a WERQ here.

  • Jessi03

    Aw, she looks fabulous!

  • Judy_J

She looks great!  I love that dress, and her Audrey Hepburn pixie cut is adorable!  I wish I could make my hair do that!

  • bluefish

Oy — definitely an improvement over the Tom Ford moment.  Her hands on hips pose is starting to annoy me.  Would love to know who is cutting her hair.   A great cut from all angles, including the back.

  • GorgeousThings

    Bitch stole my hairstyle.

  • SewingSiren

Very pretty. I love the seasonally appropriate printed velveteen fabric too.

  • In_Stitches

Based on the comments, I suppose I am alone in really not liking the hair, but I think she needs to show some forehead to balance her face.

The dress is killer.  I love the print that reads fairly clearly floral, but can also appear to be a graphic pattern or something a bit more…visceral.  And on velvet?  Dynamite.

  • jw_ny

I agree, this is pretty, however I’m one that appreciated her unconventional look from the other day.  She’s got a lot of range…fashion-wise, and seems to be having fun with it.  I’m not tired of her…

  • jane davila

She looks gorgeous but how is she not blurry in these photos from shivering? It was cold in NY last night. Granted she probably went from a warm car to a warm studio but it does look like she stayed outside posing for long enough to feel the nip in the air!

  • Judih1

I still can’t adjust to the fact that stars wear clothing out of season. I know they are promoting not just their movie but the upcoming line of whatever designer clothing they are wearing. But seeing a spring dress in December or a fall dress in the summer, is just never attractive to me, no matter how great the outfit is.

  • Hair and makeup are on POINT. Great dress for her.

  • MilaXX

very pretty, I think this length would be the best if she decides to stay short

  • Judih1

A sleeveless backless shift in December? Even if the material is velveteen, I just cant adjust to summer/spring clothing in December. I know stars have to promote not just the movie, but the upcoming line of the designer whose clothes they are wearing. But wearing clothes out of season is just never fashionable to me, no matter how wonderful the clothes are

  • miagain

    what a lovely dress…
    she looks wonderful!

  • Anathema_Device

She looks so pretty here. Head to toe.

She also managed to avoid getting her picture taken in front of the Letterman dumpsters.

  • kelsita421

So pretty! And I, for one, am not sick of her one bit (crazy trash bag dress or not) — the more I see/hear from her, the more I like her! She was on the Today Show this morning looking like Christmas and sounding so put together. Love that.

  • BazoDee

OMG -how is she not freezing??
I love love love it from the front – nothing too outlandish and really well put together even if it is safe. From the back I don’t love it -it makes her look boxy and flat. But all in all – a WIN.

  • quiltrx

I love this dress–perfect on her.  And her hair looks terrific!

And kudos to Mrs. Movie Star for managing to avoid the Dumpsters of Fashion in her photo op!

  • Little_Olive

As much as I’ve always liked her, it feels like she is on the verge of internalizing the smugness we saw yesterday for ever. Don’t do it, Annie. Your lack of affectation was your best feature (remember the Oscars you hosted?).

Cute dress. Not sold on the shoes.

  • amaranth16

Pretty standard, but *exceedingly* pretty.  She looks absolutely beautiful.  And I would CUT somebody for that dress.

  • procrastinatrice

Oh wow, this is so perfect. Sensible and likeable facial expressions are key here however, despite the awesomeness of the outfit. She was annoying as hell yesterday, and now I might even reconsider my wish that she doesn’t get that damn Oscar!

  • Candigirl1968

So much better (and really pretty)!

  • H3ff

Very basic dress but the print is stunning. It reminds me of computer-generated images of blood corpuscles, in a good way.

  • She is lovely and her eye makeup was beautiful.  She was really sweet and humble in the interview. Can’t wait for the movie.

  • Gorgeous. Love, love, love this.

  • mhleta

This is a WERQ, no question. I love the hair. She’s gotten so many great looks out of this little do!

  • Vickiefantastico

Sorry, it could be the cutest dress ever made, but I couldn’t appreciate it. I’ve gotten over-saturated with her.

  • poggi

Very pretty. Great color and print.  Plus she doesn’t have to permanently stand with her hands on her hips to make it look good.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, she’s everywhere-that said, this is a very cute dress and works well for a late night show appearance.

  • l_c_ann

From the odd colors on the not facing the camera sides, I’m guessing it’s a printed velvelteen fabric which in a sleeveless shift is unexpected.  Interesting take on a floral print (see the primulas where she sits).

  • I love that she still has freckles and cysts and moles – they don’t detract from anything, and she still looks human.

  • Her hair color and makeup and lip color are just about perfect here. I just love it. So flattering.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Very cute.  But I’m sick of platform shoes.

  • StillGary

Very very pretty — I am still a little bugged over the wardrobe mishap — these are borrowed garments, ladies!

  • Pants_are_a_must

It would make me very sad if she Winslet’d herself into smug oblivion. This is a nice change.

  • stubbornthoughts

This is simply fantastic! Love her hair here.

  • random_poster

    Looking fantastic, Annie!

  • another_laura

Adorable.  Thanks for the relief from “discussable” dresses, Miss Annie!

  • decormaven

Her hair is coiffed to perfection. That’s the way to rock a short cut. Do wish stars had a nicer place to pose prior to going in for the show, but I guess that is just part of the urban scene in NYC.

  • RocknRollmom

She makes me want to cut off my hair so badly. But those days a last are gone.  I would now just look…bad.  I never thought I would miss my cute pixie days.  Back in the day I hated the word “cute” now I would be thrilled to have it back.  She looks great.  Love the dress on her.

  • RocknRollmom

And that would be alas….I certainly would appreciate anyone who can tell me why I can’t edit on this site.  Sigh to be old and technologically challenged is not a pretty thing.

  • Imasewsure

Definitely my favorite look for her this year. Love it. Annie… you are I are good again dear

  • Trisha26

She really looks cute here – love her hair! Still, it’s December in New York, right?

  • Monday1900

I’m tempted to take those 360 shots to my hairstylist, and I bet I’m not the only one–her hair is great.  Like the dress too but it looks vintage and I think she could have gotten a better actual vintage dress.

  • Perfection. Love the lipstick.

  • tallgirl1204

Oh, I am a slave to a perfectly placed dart.  Thank you.

  • teensmom99

Dress is sweet, shoes are fine but the hair is IMPECCABLE.  I think its ‘the best hair cut I’ve seen ever.  I have never seen Anne look so beautiful.

  • Kate4queen

    Lovely 🙂

  • EEKstl

“Hefty Bag Dominatrix with Rickets.”  My salad just went down the wrong way.

And yes, her hair has been pretty flawless lately.

  • is it velvet? I wanna feel the material!

  • bellafigura1

Absolutely beautiful.  That dress is divine, the shoes are perfect with it, her makeup is flawless and THE HAIR. I am verrrry tempted to take that picture to the salon tomorrow.  I forgive the dress-and-gladiator-boot-things-and-other-business-I-can’t-unsee-from the limo.

  • unbornfawn

Damn it. Just when I was about to put her on my irrationally can’t stand list because she has been working the give me an oscar thing so hard, she goes and does this. The girl is back in my good graces. She looks fantastic. The dress is perfection on her,  the hair and make-up look lovely. Can’t wait for platform pumps to go away – its the trend so I can’t really ding her for that. Give us more of these looks, then I’ll take you seriously.

  • Is that a velvet dress? Something about it’s sheen/texture is interesting in how it changes colors depending on how she’s turned toward the light. I like it.

  • I really want that dress!

  • msdamselfly

  • hannabanana

I hope to GOD she dresses as a couture chicken. That just might put me in her fanbase.

  • up with pod people

She is just too flawless. Keep the Hathaposts coming, I say.

  • Zippypie

She looks very pretty here.  And I like her hair being a little longer in the front.  If she’s going to do short, this works for her miles better than the ultra short pixie (yes, yes, I know it was for the movie).  Though I can’t forgive her for that attention ho bullshit pletheresque bag yesterday.  It still burns in my mind.

  • Love it!!! Love the shoes!

  • Cathy S

I love that dress. She looks great.

  • Scott Isaacs

Oh, thank God. She looks like one of us here. That last dress made her look like Ursa from Superman II, and kinda scared me…Ursa was one of the most frightening villains I knew as a kid.

  • She should keep her hair this way forever and ever. It is AMAZING.

  • Super-cute look.  And the hair is finally working!  I’d love to see her play up the Audrey Hepburn gamine look instead of freak show future.

  • mozzer0906

I wonder if she remembered to wear panties this time, David’s chairs can be unforgiving…

  • e jerry powell

What about those hot pants in GLAMOUR?

  • Seriously cute.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Love the outfit. Hair and makeup are great. Wish she would take a break from the spotlight though, not much just 2-5 days. I’m sure the Academy voters feel the same.

  • LOVE her hair here. It’s perfection!

  • I love that dress, it’s so beautiful.

  • Jenna621

With each new photo I see of her, I find her more and more insufferable…and I used to really like her!  She just has this look about her that she knows she is so amazing and so much better than you.  I miss the days when she just looked cute and confident, as opposed to self-satisfied and smug.

    • I wrote almost the same exact comment, and then scrolled down and saw your comment! Great minds…

  • pookiesmom

She may have the best pixie haircut I’ve seen on a (living) famous person.

Ya know? I get that she’s kinda grating, but I adore her, somewhat irrationally. Maybe because I still associate her with The Princess Diaries. Shuttup, it was cute!

  • littlemac8

Wow, she looks wonderful here and I especially love her hair here, too!

  • judybrowni

    Very Audrey Hepburn. Cheers.

  • Love her hair styled like this.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

    Perfect, full stop.

  • God, the woman is getting insufferable. Amd someone needs to tell her that Joker lips are nor flattering. And to think I really used to like her.

  • Call me Bee

Gorgeous dress on a gorgeous woman.

  • BeaDee

I want that dress. This is the Anne we like, not the one who wishes she was Tilda Swinton.

  • CarolinLA

I never understand how anyone wears something sleeveless on Letterman.  That theater is kept at about 50 degrees.  In fact, when I watched the episode, Anne’s legs started to look purple the more the interview went on.

  • Oh goodness the moment I saw these pictures, I squealed out, “SHE LOOKS SO PRETTY HERE!”

I love couture and I love high fashion and I love it when people can pull it off. But I do love it when beautiful people wear beautiful clothes and everything is just beautiful. It just makes me so happy

  • neofashionista

    Beautiful Absolutely Beautiful

  • mhleta

BTW, I’m not tired of her at all. She’s been making some pretty bold statements. She’s got a really handle on what works on her, but she’s not afraid to take some risks. I’m really interested in what she’ll wear next.

  • ohayayay

It’s very early 90’s Winona Ryder!

  • warnerave

  • maggiemaybe

She looks perfect… and I want that haircut.

  • glennethph

After showing off her flower, she’s now wearing lots of flowers.

  • guest2visits

This is really beautiful on her. And nice to see a great shade of pink lip color instead of red or nude, for a change.

  • LilyPad

90s-chic. I love this look on her!
