Amanda Seyfried in Balenciaga

Posted on December 06, 2012

Question: Is this too cha-cha-cha or not cha-cha-cha enough? Aren’t you blessed to be on the receiving end of our erudite fashion commentary?

Amanda Seyfried attends the world premiere of ‘Les Misérables’ in London in a Balenciaga dress paired with Alexandre Birman shoes.

Balenciaga Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Juliane Gruner (SCOOP)

But really, is this working for anyone? Because it’s not working for us. The bustline is not friendly to her boobs and the skirt just sort of … ends before it’s supposed to. Even the ruffles seem a little half-assed to us. The whole shape feels off somehow.

not my cup of tea.  and she must have been freezing to death.

    • Sara__B

The guys were all wearing overcoats, and she and Anne were sporting yards of exposed flesh. Brrrrr!

  • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I…really dislike this. On pretty much every sartorial front.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

But at least you get to use the word “sartorial.” So, that part works.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Wrong length for her. And those Hoof Shoes are KILLING the look.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

So, maybe a hat…a hat with flowers on it….and holes cut out for her ears! To go with the equine theme? :-)

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Lets make it a sombrero. And give her some maracas, or castanets.  Under any circumstances, this is going to be a mighty tough frock to pull off effectively.  She is way too wee, and the proportions of every part of it are off significantly, for her.  I will credit her that her hair and makeup are great.

        • DeborahJozayt

Except she looks like a carefree cocker spaniel who lost an ear.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The only reason I like choice of the mermaid hair in this instance, is that it counterbalances the ruffle on the other side of her body.

          • DeborahJozayt

Very true, and good eye on that!

        • zenobar

I’d suggest a towering headpiece made of fake fruit – what we like to call a “pop of color”.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Are you suggesting that “bananas is her business”?

          • zenobar

Perhaps, but I, Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi just don’t like that dress very much! :)

          • zenobar

(Well, now that’s gonna be stuck in my head all day.)

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

Hum but don’t sing “The Girl from Ipanema” and the earworm will go away. Except  now I wish she had a shoulder ruffle to offset the skirt ruffle. Even a Wilma shoulder ruffle could have softened the neckline. …tall and tan and young and lovely…oh crap. I’ll be singing that at lunchtime. sigh.

          • formerlyAnon

I had a mere moment of resentment towards zenobar for the earworm, and then read your contribution. You are a bad, bad, person.

Off to troll youtube for a counter-irritant (I’m thinking the chorus from “Little Red Corvette” might serve.)

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

Yes, yes I am. sorry. :-) da di da di da da da da da….!

          • MoHub

or “The Girl With the Tutti-Fruitti Hat.”

        • bitchybitchybitchy

While we’re adding the sombrero and castanets, let’s give Amanda a really cute boy-toy in tight pants and one of those shirits with foofy sleeves so that at least she can amuse herself.

          • LesYeuxHiboux

            I nominate Gael Garcia Bernal.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Oooh, Gael Garcia!  I’m fanning myself just thinking of that man!  Sure, it’s the holidays, let’s be generous and add him to the package!

    • Tatiana Luján

      Oh, the shoes are baaad.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

This reminds me of “All About Eve”, when Anne Baxter tries to order George Sanders out of the room by opening the door, and he says, “You’re too short for that gesture.”  Well, Amanda is too short for this dress.  It has a completely different, and wonderful, vibe on the 6′ tall model.  There are so many things that a delicate beauty like her can wear, why try for this, which is so unsuited to her body type?

And you’re right, Kiltd, the shoes are the death warrant.

  • kelsita421

OH! scroll down fug. didn’t see that coming! i wonder if this had better in-person impact? the whole skirt looks like a blob here.

    • DeborahJozayt

I’d probably giggle a little seeing her walk in this thing.

  • http://twitter.com/phd_tv Heather B.

I don’t get it. My brain is really not able to make sense of that dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I second that. The hell is going on here?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

Needs MORE cha cha! And she has pink eye.

    • decormaven

“They call me Cha Cha because I’m the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s.” Sheez, at least she could have worn some vampy earrings.

  • lehen

its both – either go all the way or don’t go there at all.

    • http://twitter.com/KateKealey Kate Kealey

I agree.  I think the misstep with the dress was eliminating the high slit. They modified it (probably because she didn’t want to flash too much thigh on red carpet) but it completely ruined the structural quality of the skirt in the runway version and it throws the whole look off. As a result, she looks frumpy and not cha-cha fabulous. The neckline is interesting and if they used that and a plain long skirt it would have been OK. But with that skirt she should’ve taken it as is or just went with a different dress altogether.

      • Monabel

Except that interesting neckline gives her poquito titscrepancy.

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

No.  Hate.  It’s super awkward-looking, and really needed the short side of the skirt in the runway version (although that also is not great).  Love, on the other hand, her makeup.

  • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

Aw, sads.  I love her and I think she is exquisite but this is not her dress.  She is trying to be interesting and it so did not pay off.  Shoes are awful, awful, awful.  She looks like a little kid that got into her mom’s closet.  A strappy heel maybe and a chignon might have saved this….but I doubt it.

  • formerlyAnon

Your doubts are validated by mine. This eradicates her waist and the skirt looks both overwrought and unfinished.

She’s a doll with a great smile, though, and that’s pretty good hair if you must do the trailing over one shoulder look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I guess all I can say is, at least she’s not got her damn leg sticking out of that slit like most lady stars.

    • formerlyAnon

Ah, perspective is all!  Were Lea Michelle to try this dress, we’d none of us be able to to critique the actual dress for the eye-rolling and invective about her over-exposed breasts and the way she was holding up the skirt to shove more leg out the slit.

  • hyperionic

Not chacha enough. And I don’t like the fringed edge on the ruffles or the neckline.

  • Sal Neslusan

she’s playing cosette! she should have gone really ethereal and maybe even princess-y.

  • Introspective

the ruffles are SO underwhelming. the bodice is mundane.

the whole thing is so not worthy of your big breakout role Amanda. fire your gays before your US poledance.

  • Eva_baby

The dress is striking but it looks like it was made for a taller person.  The fit on the model is fabulous on her, not so much.

  • Little_Olive

    Off is the word.

I like the upper half, though. I think yankin’ it up an inch or so would make marvels. And hair an makeup are great. But man, that skirt. Even the model is pissed at it.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

    Meh.

  • RebeccaKW

It doesn’t seem to fit her all that well, the skirt was much better on the runway (not great, but better), the length is wrong and it doesn’t have any impact.

  • RzYoung

It’s like a very fancy swimsuit with matching sarong for the more modest lady on the beach

    • charlotte

       …with perfect hair.

  • TAGinMO

    Cha-cha-BLAH.

  • Tatiana Luján

This dress is meant to be worn by someone much taller. She looks as if her tallest cousin had lended her the dress for the premiere.

  • Larkin21

The runway version is much better but even then, I’m not a huge fan. I do love her hair and makeup, though.

  • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

The skirt all twisted. The slit should be in the front, not on the side. If she didn’t want to show that much leg, she should have picked another dress.

  • Judy_J

After just seeing what Ann Hathaway wore to the premiere, I feel really sorry for Amanda.  This dress does nothing for her; if anything, it gives her a weird shape.

    • Introspective

i know! talk about not being dressed for the same event!! Anne won by default.

      • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

Amanda was trying to make Anne feel better after the pompom sleeve debacle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Where are the castanets? I specifically asked for castanets!!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DBSIHWVY4ECXGNXAXFXJMSCNIE Katrin

It was a no when I saw the uneven boobage, I didn’t even have to get to the ruffle situation to make that decision.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chrissy.atchley1 Chrissy Atchley

The proportions are all off. On the model it is gorgeous until you get to the hip ruffle. Maybe if it was a bit lower? Or following the same asymmetrical line as the lower ruffle? Poor Amanda is just swallowed up in it.

  • velomango

Your question is spot on – I completely understood once I scrolled down and saw the dress….I think it’s not cha cha cha enough. If you’re gonna go for cray cray ruffles, then do it up. Add some sequins, and zhuzh up the neckline.

  • LadyCelia

This dress could have looked fab back in the day on someone like Anjelica Huston.  But she’s tall, dark, and interesting looking.  And it needs more interesting shoes.

  • mjude

    that is not good

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

the length of the skirt on the model is much better. it looks like a Dancing with the Stars costume.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Girl, that’s not your dress.

  • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

The dress doesn’t fit her and is kind of silly-looking in general, but I love the cleavage and her sexy makeup, and she looks like she’s feeling hot as hell.  You go, little Sarah!

  • TRSTL

Oh dear!  That dress is just not working on her. Even the version on the model, with the aggressive side slit, isn’t attractive. And her “vixen” hair is not helpng…….

  • schadenfreudelicious

i have no idea what her height is, is but judging it on the model i would say Amanda needs to be considerably taller to pull this look off….

  • BrooklynBomber

It’s horrible! HORRIBLE! And both those girls look awfully tired, don’t they? (I don’t mean Amanda’s “girls”; I mean Amanda & Anne.)

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Titscrepancy, baggy bodice and droopy ruffles. Not nearly cha cha cha enough.

  • B_C_J

The fit is definitely off both at the waist and at the bust. Looking at the model, it is clear that this dress is at least one to two sizes too large for her.  However, her hair and makeup are quite beautiful.

  • snarkalicious

This dress reminds me of the gazillion times Michael Kors tells designers on PR to NEVER over-accentuate a woman’s hips and thighs.  Why can’t high-end fashion designers take the same advice?

  • lilibetp

It’s just not for her.  She’s a sweet young thing and this is not a dress for a sweet young thing.

  • nicole seligman

the whole dress sits too low on her, i hate the way the volume is only one-sided (and weak, at that), and the white underside of the ruffles is…wrong. wrong hair, wrong shoes. bad bad bad.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

    Textbook definition of “awkward.”

  • Funkykatt

She could carry a cup of coffee on the shelf

  • Cathy S

It looks better on the model, but I still don’t like it. It’s doing her no favors, that’s for sure.

  • mozzer0906

Her boobs have that one up one down issue going on and the dress looks ridiculous.  An out from head to toe.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    Not cha-cha enough.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

The bust line sits too low and the fact that the dress blends into the backdrop is obscuring her figure.

  • Judy_S

She appears to be wearing part of a cow costume. Maybe a cha-cha-ing cow, but a cow. Ugh.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

terrible dress on her -unflattering length

  • jw_ny

wonky boobs!  This is a mess.  That skirt looks like it needs to be hiked up about a foot.  Wait, no…she should not be wearing this dress at all…slap her gays!

  • SewingSiren

This is very unusual too. I think it is a wonderful look for her but the straps are too long. If the were shortened about 1-2″ I think it would be a WERQ.
    .

  • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

This would’ve been great in a magazine, not so much on the red carpet

  • crash1212

The dress is off – made more off-er by the choice of shoes!

  • BayTampaBay

Looks better on the model with more leg showing.

  • Mexxoo

This is definitely a dress made for movement.  It almost appears to me that the skirt was longer on Amanda than on the runway model, but that could be because the model was walking.  At any rate, it is not nearly as flirty and flattering when it’s standing still.

  • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

It’s lopsided, so I have to say it’s cha-CHA. You need to be really tall to pull this off. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous, though.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

A nice idea that just didn’t pan out. It’s all about the dress and not about the girl. And I hate the way she is wearing her hair – so tacky.

  • bertkeeter

First…Will you two guys start a school for young starlets….”TNL Posing on the RED CARPET School”! I am so tired n bored / whatever of actresses with this “I’m a Teapot pose’!
Enjoy the last of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s work for Balenciaga…. As bad this dress is, God only knows what overworked “hip” mess Alexander Wang will send out!
I hope to make it to the Balenciaga museum in Spain to say I’m sorry!

  • SophiaPehawkins

The skirt on the model is cut differently and shows more leg. On Amanda, its covering her bottom half making it look awkward. I love the rest, though. Great makeup, hair, and bust.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/WPIBSSX4GFEJEZVU7VD7DNFYQY Nancy from NY

Ridiculous. And too much boobage. IMHO, a peek at cleavage or breast is sexy, showing most of,them is tacky and cheap. And quite unattractive.

  • kschwarting

I agree that the dress is kind of half-assed, but she’s selling the thing.  Look at that Veronica Lake smolder in the fifth photo.

  • FoxInSocks

I just don’t like the dress. It looks like they’re wearing the same dress, but the model ate the Wonderland cake that makes you grow and Amanda drank the drink that makes you shrink. I actually don’t mind the bodice on Amanda for the sculptural quality but overall, it’s cha-cha-nah.

  • Miss_Led

The skirt looks more fungal than cha cha, but she looks happy in it.

  • MissAnnieRN

Not working for me, but her makeup is flawless, and she is positively glowing, so it takes my eyes off the dress a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Half-asses covers it. Shorter or longer, and that split needs to be hooshed around a little to show the white detail and a bit more leg.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Did she flatten the skirt ruffle to make it more demure, or have it altered? Actually, all the ruffles look pretty limp and heavy, to be honest. I don’t really like the asymmetrical hem it began with, but I feel like it needed the white in the skirt’s ruffle to balance and continue to motif in the hip ruffle.
BAH. It’s like a pseudo flamenco dress, without any of the fun or movement of an actual flamenco dress, and not really more flattering in the process (I mean, the bustline is alright, if low, but that’s the least “cha cha” thing about the dress, unless we’re talking ChaCha from Grease – “with the worst reputation”). I don’t like it. Makeup looks good, and hair looks nice even if she’s doing that insufferable mermaid hair thing instead a straight Veronica Lake (if she’d done the latter she might have just looked cute and retro).

  • Snailstsichr

The shoes are just horrible, but I don’t think great shoes could have saved this.

  • http://www.notacomplexperson.tumblr.com xclamationmarcus

Biggest problem is that the skirt has been rotated, so the slit and the drape isn’t lying properly.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

    Not working for her.

  • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Dollsaga

it looks fine on the Model, but not flattering on her–wrong body proportions. the waistline needs to rise up 2 inches,  a hourglass shaped body is needed for this dress. It would look perfect on my Silkstone Barbie doll.

  • zuzu

I think it’s a walking dress, not a standing dress.  Which she’s too short for.

  • WittyCism

It feels like a PR dress where the designer started second guessing himself halfway through the process.  It’s like, yeah, sexy cha-cha, and then it met the bitch twins Doubt and Restraint.  End product is the saddest ruffled dress I’ve seen.

  • Kate4queen

    Um…no.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

Her hair and face look fab but I’m not loving the dress either.

  • stubbornthoughts

The ruffles look alive and well on the model, but sad and dead on Amanda. I can hardly see the shape of the dress with that black red carpet background. Her PR agent needed to give her stylists a little heads up on that one.

  • MissMariRose

The neckline looks great on the model. And…

…That’s it. That’s all I’ve got. Everything else is fug.

  • tallgirl1204

too long on her.  I’m thinking she’s a tiny little thing?

  • alyce1213

Not working for me.  Awkward all around.

  • kimmeister

So wrong. The ruffles look like she’s being attacked by a sting ray.

  • MilaXX

Hate to say it, but not cha cha enough. It feels like everything from the waist down needs to be shorter and tighter. Shoes just need burning.

  • ShayShay

Too long, too wide, too much fullness and fabric.  Didn’t Amanda see this thing on the runway and realize it looked nothing like that on her?  Fire her stylist!

  • oatmealpie

It was very cha-cha-cha on the model, but Amanda removed at least one cha, so now it’s a disappointment.

  • Imasewsure

I love the hair (and I usually hate this side thing) and I like it a lot from the waste up…. the bottom is ugly and weird though… it’s a half win!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

I like the top, but the bottom is just tragic…

  • pop_top

    No.
It should have been better fitted. The fit on her upper torso looks loose and the skirt is too long and too much to the side.

    Her hair is lovely though.

  • elemspbee

yes shape is off. too long for her. it’s not doing the twist/spiral it’s intended to. neck up, she’s gorgeous.

  • GorgeousThings

How absolutely TEENY is she? It comes down to her ankles, while on the model it hits just below the knee.
It’s definitely not working. It’s kind of like a 13 year old wore her 28 year-old aunt’s hot date dress.

I saw a video on BBC where they were interviewing some of the stars at the premier, and after doing the Step/Repeat on the red carpet, Anne Hathaway put a coat on for the interviews, so it must have been freezing. Maybe that’s why Amanda’s boobs are standing at attention. Or maybe it’s just that the dress is painfully structured.

  • neofashionista

to me it works from the mid waist up in fact from that perspective she looks better than normal
but from the waist down she looks like a widowed mariachhi band player, a poorly dress one at that it is just awful

  • marilyn

Also, the shoes are wrong.  She needs f-me shoes.  She has the wrong personality for this dress, and it oozes that.  She is demurre, and refined.  This dress is not for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

i’m thinking it takes on a whole new leggy thang when it moves. p.s. the dress, as well.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Both. Choose one! Cha-cha-cha is not something to half-ass. Plus it’s making her look very blocky and shapeless, which she is most decidedly not. Makeup is pretty good, though.

  • RocknRollmom

Hair and makeup are quite lovely but the dress is all wrong in proportions and fit.  Shoes are too clunky.  And no real jewelry to distract from other problems.  She needs a new stylist.

  • greyhoundgirl

Yes, the proportions are off.  It’s great on the model but on her the waist is too short and the skirt too long.  Couldn’t cha-cha-cha–she’d fall right over!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1476648069 Scott Cooper

    What happened to her waist?

  • Trisha26

    Awkward.

  • MintaHallWriter

I’m thinking she needs to add about a foot in height before she could possibly carry off this dress. Which is weird. Way too much dress for a really teeny lady.

  • thecitysleeps

I like the top part, but the rest is just weird.  And the shoes make it worse.

  • ankali

    It’s Balenciaga. It’s *sculptural.* /snooty highbrow voice

Not particularly wearable, like, at all. But I don’t see half-assed.

Kudos to her and Anne for wearing very risky couture. I don’t know that either of them is pulling it off (or that those dresses are pull-offable off the runway), but it’s awesome to see such interesting stuff on the RC.

  • PrunellaV

The skirt is eating her alive. But seeing these photos, I think Michelle Pfeiffer and she should star in a movie together as mother and daughter.

  • Corsetmaker

I like the neckline shape. That’s about the best I can say.

  • LeifBallard

The bodice is pretty everything else NO!

  • http://remedialstitcher.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

If it hit her at the same place lengthwise that it did on the runway model, it would have been great. She’s too short to pull this off. Top half looks good though.

  • ojosazules

    No-no-no.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

I would classify this as an unmitigated fashion disaster. Too many waves and curves (including the big Hair Twirl) taking off all over the place. I need a Dramamine just looking at her.

  • j_anson

    It’s too big for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sara.m.hottman Sara Hottman

It looks much better on the model. I bet it’d be fierce if she had it tailored to her height.

  • pugluv

Looks great on the model but she is not tall enough nor confident/edgy enough to pull this off.

  • bluefish

One of those that look smashing on the rail thin tall model and not great on the actress.

  • tereliz

    Thumbs down. Yikes.

    Anne wins this round!

  • ThaliaMenninger

I can’t figure it out, because I kind of like it and I have no rational reason why.

WRONG SHOES.  If she had worn something sleeker, the dress could have worked.

    Ew

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

Oh, yikes, no. Reminds me of a nudibranch (google it and you’ll see what I mean). Fine for a coral reef, absurd for a red carpet.

  • barbarienne

That’s a PR “fling ruffles at it in a weird spot and maybe the judges will think it’s avant garde” sort of dress.

    Bleah.

On the positive side: I love her smile in the last pic! Why do so many stars not want to smile with their teeth?

  • Allison Woods

    Ick.

  • BeaDee

Needs to be shorter (like on the model) or longer… it’s not a bad dress, but it really doesn’t belong on her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Sponge/100000465550991 Bob Sponge

Not WERQ worthy, but I like it better than Ms.Hathaway’s bedsheet-y dress.

  • http://twitter.com/Hypnos Aya Shirai

The diagonal and the horizontal ruffles do not merge at all well. It looks like she put on a tutu on top of a salsa skirt.

  • librarygrrl64

It’s maybe a taller girl’s dress? And those shoes look hideous with it.

  • elfbrick

Her eyes are simply incredible. I’d never noticed that before.

  • Zippypie

She’s just too short for the dress to work on her body.  She looks like she’s a little girl playing dress up with her mom’s dress.

  • megan howard

She’s so beautiful and has a haawt bod and they really did her no favours in lengthening the hem. The original may have been a little va-va voom but who cares, she could have killed it! Otherwise, she just looks like she’s wearing cardboard.

  • quiltrx

It looks like a swimsuit with some sort of Carmen Miranda-good-china coverup.

  • kalisa

You know this dress was neoprene, right? The stuff scuba suits are made from?

i think it looks amazing on the model but a little wide on ms seyfried. she is such a tiny thing. her hair and make up are to die for though, gorgeous eyes.
