WERQ: Alicia Keys in Azzedine Alaïa

Posted on December 10, 2012

Alicia Keys attends the Keep A Child Alive’s Black Ball Redux 2012 in New York City in an Azzedine Alaïa dress paired with Cartier jewelry.

Love that color on you, love that shape on you, love the shoulders, love the hair, love the makeup. We don’t even like chokers, but we’re loving yours. You WERQ that head-to-toe perfection, girl. You look fabulous and you CLEARLY know it.   [Photo Credit: Marco Sagliocco/PR Photos]

WERQ c. 1994.  (She still looks amazing though)

      • http://profiles.google.com/junkfoodgenius Neva Reese

I had the same thought. Time to go digging in my old jewelry box for a ribbon choker…

    • http://twitter.com/holocausticity E. Sevilla

she’s beautiful! hair’s a bit messy though (and reminds me of billy bibbit’s, hahaha KILL ME) but still. very very beautiful.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I’m sorry. Her face is luminous, her hair and make up are lovely, the color is good on her and the dress suits her….but, but, but…. i think she is wearing my couch. :-(

      • schadenfreudelicious

must agree, looks exactly like the faux suede on my mom’s dining room chairs….

      • Tatiana Luján

I agree, but I don’t think the dress suits her so well. She looks a bit stumpy and the dress isn’t doing good things to her chest area. I also hate the choker.
But, hey, she should buy dresses and tops on that same color, but on a different fabric.

      • A. W.

Agreed. That dress is heinous. It looks like it’s made out of Juicy Couture track pants.

      • NC_Meg

Agreed. Is the dress SUEDE? Even if it’s not, it looks so heavy. Make it in a different fabric and take a few inches off the hem (she’s standing in a pool of fabric) and it’d be great.

        • mellorcr

It looks like she probably can’t walk in it.  I have an image of handlers running in and picking her up and putting her on a little cart to roll her to her next location.

      • Little_Olive

Thank you! I was gonna say she looks upholstered rather than dressed.

    • Andrew Schroeder

      She’s on FIYAAAAAAAA.

    • FrayedMachine

But. The length. I was loving it until I got to the bottom. It looks like a real danger to her safety. If it were even just a few inches shorter, this would be a total WERQ for me.

      • gsk241

I agree.  My only quibble with this look is the length.  Still an IN for me, though.

      • Sobaika

Agreed on the length. That plus the choker prevent it from being a WERQ for me, but she definitely looks great overall.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Hate the hair & the choker but still a WERQ. This is the sort of thing I want to see Halle Berry in – still sexy as hell but not see-through or so tight-fitting it shows the finer anatomical details.

    • thecitysleeps

I will respectfully disagree on this one.

    • LadyCelia

She’s working some Lena Horne hair right there.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

I agree it’s a werq, but I have a hard time not seeing furniture brown fabric from Ashley Furniture when I look at the dress! lol

      • LadyCelia

I’m pretty sure it’s plum colored suede.

    • shanna bowie

Do. Not. Like. I’m with the person who said it looks like a couch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559324312 Pablo Ulloa

sorry… but this is far from WERQ in my opinion…. just for that fkn fabric… eww just WRONG, it looks heavy, tick and im sure she’s sweating like hell underneath that dress

    • gabbilevy

… if she were 70, this would be a WERQ. :/

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I’d love to see the 70 year olds you’re thinking of here.

        • gabbilevy

I’m not sure that would work either. But this manages to be both skin tight and aging, IMHO. I don’t think it helps that both hair and fabric look dated, but I think she looks dowdy.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Nah. While the color of the dress is beautiful, the fabric/material is ugly. I am a proud member of “Not a Fan of Chokers” Club since 1994. Didn’t get its appeal back then and, for the life of me, can’t figure out why folks are wearing it in this day and age.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I keep trying to center the diamond clip. It is sending my OCD out of whack.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I like the shape (though I’m not liking what it’s doing to her chest) and the color. She is undoubtedly a beautiful woman. The fabric just seems so heavy and bulky. Hair and makeup are fabulous!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

The shape of the dress is wonderful, but I don’t like the fabric. And I think the length makes her look stumpy. Also the hair and choker are a bit dated, in my opinion. Sorry dudes!

    • carpediva

Hate the choker, don’t love the hair, but LURVE the dress and everything about it.

    • MsALVA

It’s too long on her. And I don’t like the material… is it velvet?

      • Tatiana Luján

It looks more like suede in my computer.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Love her hair! It looks beautiful.

    • Aarjullor

      Do not love this.

    • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

Haha, whenever I see the word Alaïa, I just think of the scene in Clueless when she gets held up.

Alicia looks pretty 90’s fabulous, as did Alicia Silverstone.

      • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

Haha, my first thought also was “But it’s an Alaia!”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1476648069 Scott Cooper

I immediately thought of Lena Horne.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

        The resemblance is definitely notable!

    • http://twitter.com/MFeatherstone Mary Featherstone

I have to respectfully disagree on this one. The fabric of the dress and the choker are just too much…

    • stagmania

I think the WERQs are being given too freely lately. Don’t like the hair, hate the choker, dress is a great shape but looks like the cover I had on my old futon.

    • Judy_J

She looks beautiful, but I’m not loving the length of the gown….it’s just too long.  Looks like she’s standing in a bag.

    • kschwarting

Love her makeup and the slightly funky hair, but to my eye this is pulling across the hips, which is a no-no.

    • In_Stitches

I hate the choker, but there really isn’t enough available real estate for a necklace of any sort and the look calls for some jewelry.  Maybe some doorknocker earrings?

    • christopherlally

      Va-va-va- voom.

    • jw_ny

Gorgeous!  I like it all (well, most all,) including her hair (which I hated in the last posting) and the choker (why all the choker haters here?!) Only issue is with the length of her gown. It’s such an improvement over that last fiasco that I’ll happily go along with the werq.  :)

    • http://twitter.com/MaxineDance Maxine Horne

Sorry boys.  I think you spent too long staring at Carrie Bradshaw’s mismatching.  This isn’t great.  Bra showing, odd dint at crotch, looking at least 50…..  Grab a gin and have a nice lie down.  Come back to it later when you feel better. Missing you already [mwah]

    • traceyishere

      Looks like a bath towel.

    • kategs

wow.  I disagree with you guys on a regular basis (in my head) but this a WERQ?  I am not feeling it one bit.  She’s gorgeous but that outfit is a no.

    • kimmeister

Girl, that is so your makeup.  Please keep doing this and never repeat again that other makeup from your previous post here.

The bracelet looks like it’s digging in, ouch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

ugh–it’s like a 90’s flashback. And that was NOT pretty.

    • Gretchen Wirges

I can’t agree. It looks like she’s wearing terry cloth.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The dress looks heavy on her.

    • ankali

No. The dress is fine on its own, but the hair, choker, and neckline all combine to make her look like a saloon girl.

    • bellafigura1

That is some terrible upholstery fabric, what, ultra-suede?  Awful.

    • Sarah Thomas

    • MilaXX

She looks great. I wish the choker was a belt, but minor quibble.

    • rloliveira

Sorry, don’t agree. Bad length, fabric on the dress. The choker is off-center and distracting.

    • Peter Hepburn

She is gorgeous, but I look at her and expect to see her pushing drinks to cowpokes across the bar of her saloon.

    • http://www.facebook.com/D.D.D.Dino Dino Bonačić

      sorry but too 90’s

    • neofashionista

Best I have ever seen her Look!! WERQ

    • quiltrx

Very pretty in a wild-west-barmaid kind of way.  Is the dress suede??

    • Imasewsure

It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a WERQ… it just has to make us go WERQ! and this achieves it for sure. She looks amazing

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

Um…her makeup is nice? (following the golden rule of if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all)

    • maggiemaybe

Velour? Terry cloth? Suede? I’m a little troubled by the fabric…

    • elemspbee

Hmm. Not werq. The fabric looks heavy. It looks like towel fabric/material. I do like the top of the dress.

    • Zippypie

It looks like a bath towel and is much too long, making it look heavy, like drapery.  I agree on her fierceness of personality, but the dress, no.

    • Anathema_Device

I’m not feeling the WERQ either. In fact, I’m not totally sure I’d vote In, were this and In or Out post. I like the shape, neckline, and color. Really don’t like the velour-looking heaviness of the fabric; hate the choker; and the dress is too damned long.

    • erinbinek

I dunno, this dress makes her look so short.  She does look good, don’t get me wrong, but not a WERQ for me.

    • suzq

I want to see her walk in it!

    • Contralto

    • guest2visits

She looks radiant; but the dress misses a little bit. I like the color, but it’s too long.
The hair style combined with the choker gives it this slightly dated feel; reminds me of westerns and their saloon girls.
Probably a totally different impression in person.

      • procrastinatrice

Completely agree on everything you said.

    • bitterk

Helen Mirren could possibly werq this look.  It’s a tad old for Alicia.  And the length doesn’t work with the material. It looks uncomfortable heavy.    Like drapes really.  But her makeup is flawless and she looks happy.  So there’s that.

    • Kirsten Henry

eww its not a very flattering or good looking dress

    • warnerave

      pillow case !

    • Lilithcat

Oh, no.  That fabric looks like it was ripped off a couch in somebody’s man cave.

    • librarygrrl64

She looks fantastic, but what is that fabric? It looks like a cheap microfiber throw. :-/

    • Trisha26

She looks great but as others have said it’s too long, and I’m not crazy about the fabric, it almost looks like a velour towel.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

      Damn-she looks simply fabulous.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

WREQ. I don’t know how you managed to make a dress out of my parents’ 90’s-era sofa, or which PR has-been you hired to do it, Ms. Keys; but please never do it again. You’re all hips and no legs.

    • http://twitter.com/mhleta Martha Hicks Leta

Boy, I really want to love this. The color and fit are amazing. I’m struggling with the fabric, however. Is this ultra-suede? If so, I object.

    • bertkeeter

WRONG! She looks short and heavy….that may be real suede but looks like a bad made at home ultrasuede starter kit!

    • Candigirl1968

This is a WERQ for Alicia.  It’s like giving Britney a WERQ.  There will be details gone wrong (heavy fabric, too long), but given the general fashion missteps Alicia makes (bad shapes, trying to make secretarial wear red carpet gear, shiny or other unflattering material, etc.), this is really good.

P.S. We need a new term for folks who are generally fashion disasters but doing a surprisingly decent job for once.  They really don’t deserve the WERQ, but need something for their efforts.

    • formerlyAnon

I like the hair on her a lot. She looks great, though I wish the skirt wasn’t quite so long. Looks as if it puddles on the floor. I imagine that’s entirely intentional, though. I’m just not with it.

    • MissAmynae

      Personal best.

    • RzYoung

Sorry, I could never ‘werq’ anything that involved a choker, chokers never work for me.

    • Alice Tram

Euh…..no . She doesn’t look bad but this look is boring and the fabric of the dress is horrible

    • Cathy S

    • miagain

ditch the choker, and I am yours…

    • veronkimo

Don’t like the hair, the choker, neckline, or the length! Ay, papasitos, we aren’t agreeing on much lately. But, alas, it might just be my precious unborn fawn-ism talking.

    • RocknRollmom

What is that dress made of?  I can’t decide if it is suede, bad ultrasuede, or some type of heavy tight terry cloth.  Weird.  It fits her well and I like the color but the material looks weird.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bridgetlehane Bridget Lehane

hate the choker, and her bag looks like a case for sunglasses.  I love her usually, and generally agree about your WERQs, but this is just nondescript to me.

    • ShayShay

Agree this is a WERQ moment for Alicia K.  All her best assets are brought to the forefront here.  Good job June Ambrose!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ENBX3563Q4ZNCVRGSJVFIB7OAA Thom

      Dare I say it?

    • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

YUCK!  The dress makes her look stumpy and appears to have been brought back from the 90’s.  Along with the choker.  Not a fan.

    • http://www.facebook.com/erin.kristoff Erin Kristoff

hate to disagree with you but i think she looks bulky in that dress

    • lrhoff

Not “werqing” for me.  Did she make that out of drapes from her dining room?  Also don’t like the choker.  Nope.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I want that dress.   I don’t care if it is 1994.  I want it very very much.  WANT IT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henry.maler Henry Maler

The hair alone is WERQ worthy
