WERQ: Elle Fanning in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on November 08, 2012

How adorably chic is this look?

Elle Fanning attends ‘Ginger and Rosa’ Special Screening during the 2012 AFI Fest in Hollywood, California in an Oscar de la Renta gown.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Frida Gustavsson

And how beautifully made is that gown? This isn’t a word one normally associates with Oscar de la Renta, but there’s a youthfulness to this look that’s really appealing. And it demonstrates (to us, at least) that a young lady can look sophisticated and feminine and put-together, without looking like she’s indulging in precious princess fantasies a la Taylor Swift. The headband really makes the look hers. You WERQ that babychic, girl!

    how adorable!

      Laura Ashley, circa 1972.

She always looks so fresh and happy. I love that about her. And she looks very beautiful. I want the original black and white version for myself.

    • Pinup Ghoul

She has the cutest face. She looks like a Precious Moments doll, but without the creepy!

  • oatmealpie

I just wish the waist on the green dress were lower, like in the runway version.

    • Deb_Lynn

THAT’S what my eyes were noticing! Thank you! I agree, the waist on the large stripes is a little more… better…

      • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

I think the idea was maybe to make her appear taller using an empire line instead of hitting at the waist like in the runway – where no doubt the model is 6’4″ and wearing monster heels. The green dress’s cut gives the impression she’s all leg :-)

  • Sobaika

    Cute!

I wish she’d get more neautralizing powder though. She somehow always looks like she’s jogged to the red carpet.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

YES! It always, always, always bugs me beyond belief because she’s so pretty and has great, clear fresh skin. Just get some Bare Minerals.

      • MilaXX

BM doesn’t always photograph well as the mineral particles sometimes reflect back on flashes and make people looks shiney.

        • Sobaika

^ True, most mineral makeup doesn’t. But she just needs the barest coverage, a tinted moisturizer set with powder.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

I think it depends on the formulation.  BM has a matte type, and I know my Everyday Minerals stuff stands up to a lot of glare and doesn’t have any of the little reflective bits.  (Even though I am Of A Certain Age and they recommend reflective makeup, it always looks like specs of dirt to me and so I am a bit OCD about finding actual matte finishes)

          • MilaXX

For everyday use the different formulas may make a difference but with the high def and heavy duty cameras it makes little difference because all mineral makeup has reflective bits. That’s what the makeup is made of; mica and other minerals. The matte formulas are just more finely ground.

          • sweetestsith

Word. There is a ton of makeup out there designed to work with flash and whatnot, finding a decent powder for photos shouldn’t be difficult.

      • JulieTy

Did you know that Dr. Oz says mineral makeup is incredibly dangerous? The particles are so tiny, they get into one’s lungs and stay there forever.

    • Sara__B

YES! She doesn’t need to bury herself in makeup for red carpet appearances, just control the shine and the pink a little. (Bare Minerals works great for me. Wish it had been around when I was in my teens and twenties and REALLY pink-faced!)

    • MilaXX

I prefer this face over some previous ones. I think they held back on the foundation and just used blush. At least here she looks youthful so I don’t mind a bit of ruddiness.

    • egl48

Her face always seems shiny, as if she smeared it with baby oil.

  • http://twitter.com/mfonsecam Manuel Fonseca

    Lovely! it matches her eyes.

  • BazoDee

She looks fantasic and might I add that the execution on this is amazing -that’s a lot of seams and lines to line up just right. I know it is OdLR and I wouldn’t expect anything less, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t impressive.

  • http://twitter.com/jack_attack88 Jackie Stewart

This is so young and fresh. I love the chevron. It’s a spectacular look.

  • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

    Perfect!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.souffriau Sarah Souffriau

I don’t really like her version. I do like the runway version, though. The bodess looks better there. Now it feels like hers is too short.
Also, I feel like her face needs makeup. Or blotting paper.

    • Tatiana Luján

      her skin looks greasy.

      • Sobaika

Greasy and too pink. She’s so young and fresh-looking that I understand the desire for a mostly bare face, but a little setting powder didn’t hurt anyone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=807116037 Kajsa Andreasson

What a beautiful dress, it suits her perfectly! She looks adoreable , but not too sweet!

  • SewingSiren

It’s as cute and appropriate as can be. However it seems wrong seasonally, but I guess it’s southern California so maybe “seasons” don’t count.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I had the same thought as I sit here in a freezing office in blustery Manhattan…but she looks so cute I’ll try not to be TOO jealous.

  • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

She looks chic and comfortable, which usually doesn’t happen at the same time. Usually it’s either one or the other.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Adorable. Like a modern-day Alice In Wonderland.

  • lehen

    i like the b&w better

    • tereliz

I do, too. For a grown woman. But this green version with the baby stripes does feel more youthful to me without being too casual. It’s less striking, visually, sure, but perfect for Elle.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

It is not possibly to look any cuter than this! It’s got a doublemint-gum-I-play-tennis freshness that really suits Elle. None more cute.

    • Fordzo

I got a tennis vibe from the tiny pic on the main page, too, and was expecting a skirt that was cut above the knee.  I was so surprised when I scrolled down and saw that it was full length.  I think I liked her look (hair and makeup) better when I thought the dress was short.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

I’m okay with the styling because she’s so young, and it can be hard to do a gown and still look fifteen (and avoid looking like you’re headed to prom). She struck a good balance, here.

  • Call me Bee

Miss Elle looks fab ad the dress is fab, but it’s a titch too long.  So for me–not a WERQ but very, very close.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

Oh, how I love de la Renta!! BOTH of those gown are gorgeous, but maybe I’m just a sucker for chevron.

  • SophiaPehawkins

I prefer the runway version. A little foundation wouldn’t hurt either. She looks young and fresh, though.

    • MilaXX

oh I prefer this so much more. I think the time when she appears to shiney are the time when they have applied too much foundation. She’s a pretty young gal and really looks best with little more than a tinted moisturizer, a touch of blush and barely there lip gloss.

      • SophiaPehawkins

I always look at pictures of her on the red carpet and it looks like she doesn’t wear much coverage. I agree a tinted moisturizer would work better, and a matte setting powder. Her face is too shiny.

I like the nautical feel of the original plus it’s much more graphic, so mileage varies.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

I love the dress. I like the fact that she doesn’t wear much makeup. At her age, she doesn’t have to do her makeup like a 25 yr old. And she doesn’t. Love it!

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

I adore everything about this look, but most especially her fresh, bare face and the (possibly Bakelite?) bangles. What a timeless, fun look.

    • decormaven

Those bangles do look lite Bakelite. Love!

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Oh the original black and white is SO good. *swoon*

  • B_C_J

This dress is perfect for this young lady.  It is fresh, fun, light and it fits beautifully.  I am glad she opted for this fabric.  The black and white is divine as well but a bit too sophisticated for a 14 year old.  Given her age, I can absolutely understand the lack of makeup.  It adds to her appeal.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Preppy perfection.  :)

  • f_yeah_marie

I like her and think she’s a very good actress.  She looks great in this dress, even with the Giada-like grin.

    • MilaXX

I think her smile looks much more genuine than Giada’s high strung, clenched teeth grin.

      • f_yeah_marie

         I’m sure you’re right!

  • http://twitter.com/uyeahu Michelle Wilson

    Completely adorable and very chic.

  • nancylee61

The best thing about this is that, even though she is in a dress costing thousands and thousands of dollars, she looks like she is just a very well dressed prom goer. She looks like a nice, normal girl in this, not a made-up, overly mature teen star. I like that.

  • MilaXX

She looks cute and I love how her smile literally lights up her face.

  • kimmeister

Super cute!  I’m a sucker for emerald green and white together.

  • VeryClaire

Who knew that those stripes would work in a gown?  Perfect!

  • PrunellaV

Alice in Wonderland never looked so good.

  • Lilak

She looks v nice in the preppiest prom dress ever, which isn’t a patch on the runway version shown (agree w/ others here that she’s still too jeune fille for that one).

Too bad about the Fanning version’s altered bodice and the addition of the panel at the hem (and please dear God, tell me that’s an optical illusion where it’s attached, and not piping!), although I suppose if you’re going to fashion a gown out of the duvet cover off the bed at your NH summer home, that panel is necessary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

love it, although it’s such a springfresh or summery look that i can’t help wishing she wore it in august.  or next april.

  • PinkLemon

LUH-HUH. i predict she’ll be the most gorgeous woman in hollywood in about 15 years.

  • Chantry Banks

I’m obsessed with the fabric being horizontal on the hem. Obsessed.

  • miagain

I can’t even begin to express how much I love that dress…. it is everything I adore (and more)… fresh green stripes!!

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

    Oh that’s spectacular!

  • kikisayshi

    Love

  • frannyprof

    Perfection.

  • l_c_ann

If that dress doesn’t inspire teenagers to learn to sew, nothing will.

  • Judy_J

    Fresh and lovely.  Perfect.

  • decormaven

Great look! Shhh, don’t say the words “T-S” or she’ll appropriate this gown for her own devices. In red, of course.

  • alyce1213

Love the look, but wasn’t it possible to match the lines on each panel?  Maybe not, I don’t know.  Isn’t that what you pay for with couture?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

I’m going to be having dreams about that dress. It’s gorgeous.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The dress is lovely, but… I hate the headband. And hate the red face.

    • Kristin McNamara

What I don’t like about the headband is that she has HORRIBLY visible, dark roots. So the headband being placed where it is, combined with the direction her hair’s combed, make it look like the lighter blonde hair is PART OF THE HEADBAND. Like it’s attached to it like a veil and it’s not real. Because all the hair in front of the headband is such a different color. Besides that, I love everything about this look.

      • Kani G

My thoughts exactly.  At first I thought she had some horrible hairpiece attached to the headband.  Why wouldn’t you get your roots touched up before a big appearance?

        Love the dress, though!

  • granddelusion

Too old for her, and too long.

  • Lola67

Very adorable. I love that she keeps a fresh face, and the color suits her.

  • nannypoo

Beautiful. Now you hold her down while I get some blotting papers.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Cool dress but the pattern is hurting my eyes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

    maybe ONE drop of makeup??

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I love the dress but the hair is making me crazy. The headband is too close to her forehead or something. And her face is not done up enough. I am really not trying to rip her – she’s a cute girl – but the hair is not working for me.

  • c decker

She is as cute as a button, that one!  I really love that she does age-appropriate and still looks so glamorous!

  • allisankelly

Gorgeous dress! I am a sucker for green, so of course green candy striper ball gown is perfect. The chevron effect from the seaming is what makes it for me.

  • PantherontheRunway

Love it but the bodice going down further on the model, looks better.
The model says “Barbie” and her dress says “skipper”

But the green and white is fab!

  • Stuck_on_Mute

I had to do a double take that she wasn’t wearing a tiara in the first picture due to the Audi logo – makes me giggle.

This is a very refreshing look for a young star, and she looks really happy!

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The dress Elle is wearing is very different from the runway version (which I LOVE), but hers is gorgeous too. Absolutely PERFECT for her or a starlet her age.

  • quiltrx

That is an IMPECCABLE gown!  It looks great on her.  I’m really liking her these days…finally saw Super 8 and I thought she was really good.  She always looks like she’s having a wonderful time, which to me goes a long way on the RC.

But my constructive criticism is that maybe she could work on the shiny face a little.

  • Let it out

Ew, headband, ew.  Straight from from classy to Muffy

  • TieDye64

    So very fresh and pretty.

  • SophieCollier

That is a fabulous dress, and exactly right for her.

  • KatrinaAtienza

    Adorable! Fresh! Nautical!

  • J MN

I think this Fanning is totally adorable and her smile lights her up.  My only quibble with the whole look is the headband.  Maybe if it was different or a little further back it would make the hair look more finished.  That is a minor quibble.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I can’t even complain about the length.  The dress itself is pretty incredible, but Elle here is really making it work!

  • EEKstl

    Perfection!  Love the headband.

  • Contralto

    She’s adorable.  WERQ!

  • guest2visits

This is really cute and works perfectly on her. I only wish that the headband was not so bland,; maybe green, pink or peach  instead.

  • kategs

I love that the smaller stripe allows for more seaming.  She looks wonderful!

  • SublimatedRage

I think she is adorable and the dress is perfection.  However, am I the only one that thinks the color and the white accessories seems a scootch summer?  It doesn’t exactly read “November” to me…..  call me old-fashioned :(

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

I suppose it is, but this event was held in Hollywood. The temps were probably in the seventies.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

    So, so beautiful.

  • lucasuk82

Love this look – she’s very DeDe Halcyon Day after the Golden Door.  The shiny skin isn’t how I would style her, but I always appreciate stars that make personal choices about their look rather than being styled into conformity.

  • librarygrrl64

    Preppy chic! Love it!
