Taylor Swift in London

Posted on November 08, 2012

This is a typically sickly sweet Tay getup, but we can’t say we don’t like it.

Taylor Swift makes her way into the studios at BBC Radio Two in London wearing a French Connection sweater paired with O Jour ballet flats.

French Connection Polka Dot Sweater

O Jour Ballet Flats

If she’s going to stubbornly stick to her princess style, then a move away from “Disney Princess” and toward “Park Avenue Princess” is at least a step in the right direction.

It’s our weakness for ladypants, kittens. We can’t help it. When they’re deployed well, even Taylor Swift can get a begrudging “attagirl” from us. Although our bitchy side can’t help but point out that the bag is totally wrong for the look.

For some reason her bangs have looked really fake lately. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but something about her hair has been bugging me. Besides that, she looks really cute.

      • http://twitter.com/katshimmers Kat Wright

They also make her look old in my opinion.

      • Introspective

its the color and the cut (if we want to call it that). the dull blond and the too long bangs have a decidedly underwhelming effect…

    • http://www.facebook.com/beccalise.deveaux ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I absolutely love how she dresses, but I can’t STAND her music. Blech.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The only thing here that bugs me are the flats.  Hate em. Its the over-sized tailored bows on the toes.

      • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

For me, it’s the fact that those little bronze (?) caps on the fronts make them look peep toed, and I am an old fuddy who will not stick open toed shoes in November.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Hadn’t noticed those right off. Add that to the list of things I dislike about those shoes.

        • mjude

i had to go back to look at the shoes & you are so right.  but i do think she looks cute

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I never wear flats, so I don’t know, but do you think the caps might be to protect the toe?  Do toes on flat shoes tend to get scuffed more than toes on other kinds of shoes?  Just wondering.

        • zbkat

At first I thought her big toe was poking through the peep toe, and how awfully painful it looked. I really should wear my glasses.

      • MoHub

Actually, I would wear those shoes and find a celeb wearing flats refreshing.

      • Sobaika

Agreed. Also the pearls are not working here.

        • Deb_Lynn

Yep, the pearls end up being too obvious a choice. They end up showing as matchy matchy with the white polka dot sweater. And the result, of course, is “precious”.

        • decormaven

Reminds me of Ally Sheedy’s look in “St. Elmo’s Fire”. 80’s prep.

        • silaria

Am I the only person who really hates it when a necklace crosses over the neckline?  Not super-long sweater length necklaces, but shorter ones that end up fighting the shape of the shirt.  It never looks right to me, but I’ve never seen it called out.

      • zenobar

They remind me of those Pappagallo flats worn by preppy-“Heathers” types (and their mothers, and their grandmothers) in the 80s.

      • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

The only thing that bugs me is her face. I mean, the way the scroll down does the “the portrait’s eyes are following me!” thing. Eerie.
…But also, her face. I don’t like Taylor Swift. There. I went out on that limb and I said it. ;)

      • kschwarting

What kills me is that almost everyone who makes ballet flats has put bows on them this season.  And as a 40-year-old woman, I just can’t do ballet flats with bows.

      • RebeccaKW

Yes, those shoes.  Ugh.  Hate the bow, hate the weird copper tip, hate how they rise at the back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I love the way she dresses, despite constantly wanting to throw a stick at her.

The pearls are too much though.

    • kimmeister

I agree that the bag is wrong for the look, but what a great satchel it is!  Looks nice and structured, good for notebooks and such.

      • http://twitter.com/spygrl1 Trish

Agreed, I have major bag-lust for that one.

      • SouthernGirlRena

I am just happy she is carrying it like a normal person.  The everyone-see-my-expensive-bag pose looks so silly.

    • jennifromcali

Wish the sweater didn’t have that silly cat on one of the polka dots, hate the bag, and question the pearls, but overall, yes, looks good!

      • bookish

I agree, I loved this until I noticed the cat. That detail just has an annoying quirkiness to it.

        • Le_Sigh

I’d argue that its just her.  I feel like deployed on the right tween-star, it would be cute and fun.

Ooh – Kiernan Shirpka!  Or even one of the Fannings.

        • kittenwithaquip

Ugh, the cat! I didn’t even notice at first. Now all she needs is a Hello Kitty bag and some sparkly jelly flats.

    • MoHub

Twee as hell, but that’s her thing, and she does it well. I just hope we don’t see her doing the same thing 10 or 20 years from now. I’ll be watching.

    • VicksieDo

Wants to wipe that “shit yeah, I’m richer than you’ll ever be” look off her face.

    • shirab

Maybe it’s just the lighting, but her hair has a very mousy cast to it. Isn’t it usually all princessy-golden?

      • schadenfreudelicious

i thought the same thing, her hair is looking mighty ashy in these photos….

    • carolie_king

I once gave my mom a Liz Claiborne sweater almost identical to this one.  She was probably 60 at the time.

    • NC_Meg

I think she looks pretty chic but the strand of pearls gets an “of course” from me.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Get rid of the pearls and pick a better lipstick color (that goes with the outfit) and I could get on board with this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

Hate the sweater, the shoes are sweet and her hair looks like crap.

    • sterlingrose

She sings songs for young girls and they are clean and inoffensive and that is how she dresses. That is okay with me.  Why does she need to be anything else?  Do we need another Brittany or Rhianna as a role  model for our 10-14 yr olds?  I would prefer more young teenagers look like her than the alternative – and I see it at the junior highs in Los Angeles

      • bookish

This is a good point. I don’t listen to Taylor Swift, but I know my 8-year-old niece can sing along to all her songs. I’d say she’s pretty much been her role model for the last two years.

        • Cleo H

It’s one thing for your niece to enjoy TS’s music, but why has she been elevated to ‘role model’ status?

          • http://twitter.com/Goldielox73 Goldie

That’s a label that quickly gets slapped on any artist that appeals to a younger crowd, deserved or not.  Unlike most other young stars her age, she’s embraced it instead of resenting it.  We saw her on TV yesterday and my husband asked when she was going to turn all slutty-edgy like the other girls.  I said she knows young girls look up to her and doesn’t want to set a bad example, apparently she was raised better than Miley or the others.

            • Cleo H

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that she was raised better than Miley Cyrus for example, but that she has a different view of being elevated to ‘role model’ status than others in that she embraces it. It’s not Taylor Swift’s or Britney Spears’ or any other celebrity’s responsibility to show someone’s child whom they’ve never met and will likely never meet how to behave or treat people; that’s what parents and families are for. I recognize that celebrities are often looked at as role models but that doesn’t mean that it’s a good thing or appropriate. Further she’s a 22-year old woman who should be fully allowed to live as one (not necessarily drinking and partying but simply being an adult) without constantly having to think about how someone’s 10 year old may perceive her actions.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

“Do we need another Brittany or Rhianna as a role  model for our 10-14 yr olds?”

        These are the only options?

      • MissMariRose

I don’t consider her songs to be inoffensive, quite the opposite. They’re pretty much all about getting and keeping a boy. IMHO, that kind of “I need a man and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him” thinking is dangerous for young girls. It’s 2012, not 1952. Girls and women have choices. There are tons of artists out there who don’t dress like Britney and yet still sing empowering songs of independence for young women.

      • http://typicalgirlink.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

But she’s not a young teenager, she’s 22 years old and has the right to dress like one, even if that means dressing in a way to some may perceive as ‘slutty’ or ‘trashy’ (and I say that as someone who stays pretty buttoned up). Celebrities shouldn’t be role models, they’re just entertainers.

      • silaria

I find her pretty much the embodiment of the anti-feminist, and that bugs the hell out of me.  I’d much rather my theoretical kids listen to the Spice Girls, Pink, or even Avril.  They at least sing about being your own person and doing what you want to do.

    • mmgk

I like everything below the neck.  Not loving the lips, hair and pearls though.

    • Janet B

If she removed the pearls and bag, I’d love this.  I have a weakness for polka-dots.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

I think it’s the pearls that push me over the edge.  Oh, wait, there’s a fucking smiley kitty on her sweater?  Ugh, I want to set her on fire.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The pearls were unnecessary …I like that she wears flats, but I don’t like these particular pair. Otherwise, well played.

    • mmc2315

Loved the sweater until I saw the cat on it.  Too cutsie.

    • Anne At Large

How about this: I love the sweater/pants combo and the accessories/styling is what kills the love. The sweater is twee enough without everything else.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

      Oh honey not pearls.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austen-Jane/100002245814326 Austen Jane

I think she is going to look back on her skinny cute youth and regret that mousy, partially grey hair color. For this type of outfit, I like it.

    • alyce1213

The only thing can fault are the toe tips on her shoes, but apparently that’s a new trend.  She looks great.

    • Little_Olive

The pearls take it to costumeville. She is insisting too much on this “young lady” persona. The daintiness is annoying.

      Otherwise, lovely. :s

    • http://chibirobot.blogspot.com/ Wendy Ann

I love the sweater, even with the silly cat on it!  The bag can go, it’s too much for this look; a smaller crossbody purse would have been perfect.

      • silaria

I actually really love the cat, and would wear the hell out of that sweater as a 28-year-old grad student.

    • PeggyOC

It’s the half-assed pearls that push it over the line into her usual twee zone.  Or the combination of the pearls and the flats.  If she’d worn an edgier necklace or edgier shoes, this would be a total win.  Still giving her a grudging in.  It’s a nice look.

    • http://twitter.com/thehilariest The Hilariest

Hate the shoes, the bag is 5 kinds of wrong, and the pearls are ridiculous. Overall, the proportions look whack, although some of that may be the camera angle.

Also? Her hair is bugging me right the eff out. I don’t like anything about this look at all. Bah. It’s making me grumpy.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Ugh, with the pearls and the ashy blond and the stupid open-toed flats. I don’t care how thought-out those clothes are. She makes me want to dump paint on her head.

She is the yang to Lea Michele’s annoying ying.

      • twocee

Heh.  Yeah, you can’t get more polar opposite but in the end both stars usually merit a simple “of course.”

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

If she got rid of the pearls, changed to a different pair of flats (something that popped, color-wise), and changed her lip color, I would love this. Right now? Twee isn’t really it, I would almost suggest it ages her. Reminds me of old-lady things. I usually like her style, but this is a miss for me.

    • CPK1

love the pants and flats.  It’s a look I really like.  she could lose the pearls to take it out of tweedom

    • RzYoung

I like it apart from the pearls, that pushes it over the edge

      • l_c_ann

To me the pearls look like popbeads, especially with the cat head on the sweater.

    • quiltrx

That bag is fabulous, full stop.  But in my mind, if I take it away, this is an absolutely Audrey getup.  Which i guess is why I like it so much!

    • SewingSiren

       Princess Diana, the early years.

    • ojosazules

My dearly departed Grandmother would have worn the shit out of this outfit. Except for the large satchel.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I hate the princessy pearls with that, and I don’t like something about the relationship of the length of the top to the rise of the pants.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

At least she looks 200% better than some celeb Americans who have been in London and Paris in recent weeks.

    • jmorino08

Swap out the bag and replace the grandma’s pearl necklace with something more youthful and modern and this would be a home run!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

      Is that a laptop case?

    • H3ff

I love the bag with the look! It adds some much-needed edge and toughness.

    • StephanieLovesTLo

My teeth hurt from looking at this.

    • http://4ofwands.wordpress.com/ Aj/Melia

hate the lipstick, the shoes are ugly, love the cat face on the sweater

    • UptownNippy

I like her personal style.  I love each each item she is wearing.

    • E_bee

All I can think of looking at this is the irritating feeling of a shoulder bag that won’t stay on your shoulder. Bet she had to shrug that thing back up four or five times just on her way into the studio.

    • A B

Is that really a polka dot with a cat face on it?  Really?  Between that and the pearls I’m in diabetic shock from the twee.

    • twocee

I can’t help it, I love the sweater.  I hate everything else.

I’m not sure why, but every time I look at the pictures I get this weird Charlotte from SaTC vibe.  Maybe it’s the pearls.

    • Anathema_Device

Love those pants. Wish she hadn’t worn the red lipstick and the pearls (something funkier would have modernized this). Overall, she looks really good but comfy.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Shit. I love this, minus grandma’s pearls. Otherwise, I’d totally rock this look.

    • B_C_J

The polka-dotted   sweater combined with the pearls is just way too sugary sweet for me.  The pants  are fine as is her  purse. The shoes are borderline o.k.  I wish she would wear something other than fire engine red lipstick.

    • MilaXX

I like everything but those stupid pearls. They tip me right over the edge to stabby mode. They take a cute, young look and shove it straight to twee. HATE

    • MilaXX

I really like the shoes. In fact, they are my favorite part of the look.

    • http://twitter.com/Goldielox73 Goldie

Maybe because she wears flats so much I didn’t realize how tall she really is.  She was on Ellen last week and wore heels.  Ellen isn’t exactly short and Taylor towered over her.  When she performed later wearing shorts, I commented that I thought her legs were longer than my whole body.

    • UptownNippy

I think the pearls are ironic.

    • WittyCism

I liked the polkadot sweater and ladypant combo, but suddenly loved it when I spied the kitty!  I think it’s light and humorous, and a modern take on Betty Draper.

    • http://www.facebook.com/seelebrennt Christina Diaz

she’s kidding with the pearls, right?  the sweater is cute and i LOVE the color of the pants, but the pearls put it over the top for me.

    • zenobar

I think this look is a very literal homage to early-80s Sloane Ranger.  Remember Princess Diana’s “black sheep” sweater?

    • Laylalola

To me it looks like the latest fantasy world she’s living in is the one where she’s rushing a college sorority.

    • nannypoo

I don’t care what the rest of you think – I like her. I can’t stand her music, but I think she really is as sweet as she seems to be. Lindsay Lohan, Brittney Spears, Miley Cyrus, or Taylor Swift: pick the one you think is a good role model for teenagers and young women. And yes I am aware of Hailee Steinfeld and Dakota Fanning and Chloe Moretz, but I don’t think teenagers give a rip about them. We need more celebrities who appeal to young people and yet seem to be nice.

      • Laylalola

(eyeroll) What is it with adults behaving like preteens obsessed with defending certain superstar celebrities?

        • nannypoo

(eyeroll yourself) It’s my opinion, not my obsession.

          • UptownNippy

I agree nannypoo, she is a breath of fresh air

I also like that she stays true to herself and wears her certain style well

      • guest2visits

        I listen to a wide variety of music; and I’m afraid Taylor isn’t on my list, or may ever be. Still I don’t mind her as a person;
she comes across as a fairly nice, smart, and even kind  individual. At least compared to so many other artists out there.
And I can’t really say she’s got a message any more insidious than any of the other singers or bands that I’ve heard, now or in
the past.  I think ( and I hope) there will always be a huge buffet of music to pick and choose from; music to grow with,
music to leave behind, music to discover.   Taylor is really a very small fraction of available sounds; for those who can’t get past her.

    • wuffgal

I’m over the look, but there is that cute bodyguard again!

    • stubbornthoughts

She needs to stop staring at me. Right now.

    • miagain

      I think she looks darling…

    • Sara__B

The kitty on the sweater plus the pearls are just too much. I have to go look at Alan Cummings and Cameron Diaz  again to cleanse my palate from too much sweet.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Love the sweater.

    • Joyce VG

Pearls?? Is she serious.  The sweater and pants are great looking though.

    • Contralto

The bag is wrong, albeit practical I suppose, and I think her lipstick is the wrong shade.  Still, she looks very pretty and I love that sweater.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13953311 Missy Covington

For me, this isn’t even precious–it’s just *old*. My grandmother had that sweater–sans rogue kitten-dot–and the pearls and updo take it to nursinghome princess land.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

you’ve actually been “atta-girling” her a lot lately.  what does this meeeeeean?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I would be totally loving that sweater if I hadn’t seen the godawful kitten in the model’s photo.  Yuck.  Love the ankle-baring length on the pants, though.

    • EEKstl

She lost me at the pearls.

    • LJCdoc

I kind of like this but I can’t help thinking you should just activate your “of course” macro every time she shows up looking like a saccharine faiiry princess. Wouldn’t want your fingers to fall off from excess typing.

    • butter nut

omg she is serving 1985 realness.  can’t hate.

    • julnyes

whisk away the pearls and those odd flats and i would adore this outfit.

    • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

      Pearls? Really?

    • http://typicalgirlink.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

I actually quite like the outfit, and could see a lot of London girls in it. But those grandma shoes and ridiculous pearls just make her look so boring and suburban. A pair of wedges or scruffy boots, and some oversized earrings and dramatic eye makeup would improve the look and make it young without being so insufferably twee. And that hair colour makes her face look harsh.

      • Tracy_Flick

I totally agree. The pearls and the shoes are just NO. She and Katie Holmes need to get together and swap half their wardrobes. That way Katie would have some normal stuff and Taylor would have some interesting items.

    • thecitysleeps

I would wear this look every day to be honest.  That sweater is adorable.  And I hate her.  Those pearls and that hair is just too much though.

    • snarkykitten

but but but…she’s wearing high waters

    • MaryAtRealityTea

This is a great look for her. It’s certainly “Kennedy” (maybe her five second fling rubbed off). She has great legs for that style of pants that I so wish I could make work. The bangs, however, need to go immediately. They really close off her face.

    • Jennifer L.

I want that satchel – anyone know the designer?

    • jw_ny

The pearls, polka dots with a kitty, shoe bows…ugh. ugh. ugh.

    • Meghan Gerhart

This is the outfit of a stylish 80 year old. Or, at least that’s the impression I get when I look at her. It’s a put together look but the pearls tip it over into grandma territory.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

Seriously? I feel like this whole look adds about two decades to her age.

    • Zippypie

The pants are awesome.  The rest of the outfit, oh my.  Just twee as fuck.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RHLSUVX3NCPB4OSS5BM7GZIXUE P. Capet

i would wear all of that.

    • DylanCurtis

I would totally wear that, save for the bag and pearls…so I won’t hate.

    • guest2visits

This is not that appealing to me – first, because of the bag which looks matronly and dated (and looks like it’s carrying all the secret
files from some old WW2 espionage film).  And the truly Disney pairing of pearls and giant spots. Way too close too Minnie Mouse,
for me.  And not as original looking as her other outfits. If she got rid of the bag and traded the pearls for something else; it could be
      a very pretty look.

    • Corazon Nunez

      HATING her hair.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

With the exception of the kitty face on the sweater, I would totally take this outfit home right now. I have some version of all of these pieces in my closet. Now I know what I’m wearing to work tomorrow. :)

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

I’m pretty sure I need that sweater, because meow meow meow

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Z2CUJA7CJI3M7MUMQOVJDB3XQ Christine

I’m too busy wondering if she’s a vampire to really pay much attention to the outfit

    • ccm800

I can say I dont like it. Because I dont like it.

    • prettybigkitty

Begrudgingly love all of the clothes.  Despise her lipstick color paired with this outfit.  And the pearls.  Don’t even get me started. . . .
